Excellent pastries, cakes, cookies, and breads. This is a real bakery (and quite a large one). I haven't been to any bakery that's remotely at this level in North or South Carolina. Even the most persnickety of New England transplants would have to acknowledge that this is a really good quality place -- they could hold their own against most of the great bakeries (many now gone) in the Northeast. And they are comically, absurdly, ridiculously, ludicrously better than any other bakery in the Southeast. It's a German bakery, so the style of pastries is a bit more dainty and exquisite (gewählt, even) than those at a typical New England bakery (where danishes are generally massive, with a thin pastry border surrounding a vast caldera of fruit or cheese filling). But, that's just a stylistic thing. The pastries at Strossner's are elegant, very tasty, soft, not dry, and perfectly made. The apple and lemon fillings are as good as any I've had anywhere in the United States. The cheese filling, and chocolate cookies and cakes are excellent, too. Everything is also very fresh -- these are clearly pastries made without any sort of preservatives, so aging will quickly show. Basically, this is the best bakery I've been to since at least 1984 (when I was a very small and chunky kid, in Fall River, MA, home of bakeries). And, like the serious bakery they are, they also have breads. Some very well-made authentically German breads, too. When there was a line, it moved quickly, and service was excellent at the counter. Everyone was very friendly and well-informed about the products. There are also some brunch-type items (quiches) but I didn't try them. They looked pretty good, though. My only fear for Strossner's is that, due to the apparent lack of competition for hundreds of miles or more, there may one day be a loosening of standards. But, since they seem to still be owned and actively run by the original founding family, it's pretty darn good right now. read more

I came here to get my nephew a birthday cake. He has a dairy allergy, that being said they were more than accommodating with the icing on the outside and inside, ensuring that there products were dairy free and no need to worry. It's Comforting to know that my nephew can enjoy his birthday and not have to worry about his allergy. The cake came out just as I imagined and looks absolutely amazing ! The cafe is to the left upon entry and the bakery and display is to the right, and what a display! A Greenville staple for over 75 years, they moved to this location in 2002 and have been named by Southern Living Magazine as the #4 best bakery in the South. The old adage that "we first eat with our eyes" is on full display here; pictures cannot do it full justice. And the smells of the bakery and cafe add to the sensory experience. The bakery side infuses flavors in their treats with flavors wash technique (typically on unbaked products and based on egg and cream mixture) that ensures moist and tender cakes or pastries. One example, for the forthcoming Kentucky Derby they had a cake washed with mint and bourbon that included a mint layer of icing and a bourbon based layer of icing inside the cake to achieve a "mint julep" cake. Of several items we purchased, mostly the cake part is standard white cake with flavor added and very nicely decorated. If one were to judge just on taste, it's essentially a good white cake, the "wow" comes from the decoration and somewhat the flavors. Heavy on the icing. But that is the decadence many want, and it looks great. I had the key lime pound cake and it was good, but a lighter example compared to Granny's (my Granny), so that's an unfair comparison, but it was lighter than anticipated and Granny's isn't the only pound cake I've had. The key lime was more subtle than the visual and mostly came from the glaze. The visual was so good, I asked if we could buy by the slice and the staff agreed to slice up a full cake for my slice and since they were getting low on pre-sliced available pound cake options. My wife loved it all! They do have take and bake casseroles and the cafe side has great sandwiches, an admirable Reuben if I remember. We must come here more often as it is very good and convenient and Granny took here recipe to the grave years ago, (RIP). read more

What an absolute delight! A beautiful bakery Café, extremely clean with multiple cash registers to help with the ordering. There is a café section with savory items on the menu. No bagels! However, a whole variety of different breads are available. The sweet treats are an absolute Picture. They have decorated whole cakes, pastries, muffins, cookies, cupcakes, and so much more. Everything is baked in house and you can see the pastry chefs in the background doing their work. The bakery is large with lots of space to sit down in the eat. They have indoor seating, they have patio seating that is enclosed, and then they have outdoor patio seating. Very comfortable. Parking is very easy with a large lot in front. I wanted a chicken pot pie unfortunately we had gotten there later in the day and they were out so I chose a sandwich that was supposed to have jalapeños on it but they were out of jalapeños as well, but that was fine The sandwich i ordered was good just a regular sandwich. This locale is a true delight to visit. They have a shopping area, bakery and food cafe. Staff is always friendly and on point. I wish they would open a store in Cobb County, Atlanta near The Battery (ballpark.) They would do tons of business. The sausage, red pepper, cheese quiche has high-quality ingredients and is very tasty (almost nobody puts cheese in their quiche anymore, let alone quality cheese where the flavor pops.) Hubby enjoyed his chicken pot pie; however, said he likes the sandwiches they make here better. The only disconnect for our party is the cheese cookies. The first time we ordered, we thought we were getting sweet, yummy cookies so the first bite we took, the reality was so different, we almost spit out the cookies, lol. Very blah. My first interaction with the bakery staff was great. I purchased a $50 cake for my husband's birthday. Next, I placed an order for a sandwich to go. The woman working at the back to-go counter noticed me checking a bag and snatched it off as she told me that my name would be called, while rolling her eyes. I apologized and went to sit at a nearby table. Minutes later, she called my name out and walked away. There was an open bag with the food left in view, so I patiently waited for her to return to the counter to ask if it was mine. She responded by asking me if Marisol was my name, to which I replied that it was, and again she rolled her eyes and nodded her head in exasperation. We went to Strossner's on the recommendation of a friend. First thing I noticed when I walked in was the nice, spacious and very clean environment. When we went to order, we were met with smiling faces all around and very helpful people. It sure looks like they liked working there where they put up a very good front. My wife had a bowl of soup and half of a sandwich and I had the Reuben sandwich. We also walked by the dessert display and couldn't help but get two pieces of cheesecake. All the food was tasteful and we enjoyed it. Our only recommendation would be that the havarty cheese on my wife's sandwich was paper thin and she couldn't even taste it. Also, although my Reuben sandwich was quite tasty, I felt it was just a little bit light on the meat. Don't get me wrong, I would still order it again.
