This is the best bookstore I've ever been to thus far. It was a random find while I was in the area. Stepping in here feels like the grown version of buying comic books every first Sunday of every month, except you get to see what happens behind the scenes as well as finding the most random yet completely fitting books in this bookstore. I can seriously fall asleep in here and just wake up then continue browsing. Just randomly flipping through all the books.. sounds like a relaxing few weird days. The prices are very sound or at least appears that way. I would definitely return.

I drove over an hour to get to this store just to pick up a book that I had placed. Sure I could've placed an order to get it shipped to me, but visiting this place has been a goal for some time and it did not disappoint. After driving an hour, I wasn't just going to go home, I stayed for sometime looking around the shop. They have so many varieties of books from movies, rare prints as well as original drawings from artists and storyboard art. This store is everything for someone who loves art, behind the scenes on movies and more. I can't tell you how highly I recommend visiting this spot, and if you can't visit, make sure to visit there website "https://stuartngbooks.com" as what they have at the store, they mostly have it on the website as well. Lastly, the people who work at the store are really knowledgeable with what they have, so if you're looking for some type of book, they for sure can help you locate it. They are extremely nice!

Don't expect long boxes to paw through. No bins here either. Stuart Ng Books is a neat collection of artbooks, sketchbooks, and original art from graphic artists the world over, situated in a business park. It's quite tidy and organized and it's easy to see why comics artists have praised this shop. Seemed like most of the things there were signed and some are notarized (like the first edition Lemony Snicket novels going for $100 apiece). Several shelves of old books denoted their being fragile and to handle with care. I was pleasantly surprised to see a large selection of those little paper books artists tend to sell at conventions (photo: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/HC_vctAFZwswgkgl7tYRaA?select=8TyOtHWT7AqUZ4Emi7w50g#8TyOtHWT7AqUZ4Emi7w50g). You don't usually see them at comic shops and more often than not these sketchbooks are filled with exclusive work by the artists that didn't make it into their titles or they were experimenting with new styles or characters. Most of those acquisitions were signed as well. Probably the best place in the area to pick up vintage pin-up art and comics that appeared in Playboy. Yep, not really a place to take your kid for their Superman comic after they sat still for a haircut, but more one for serious collectors and those seeking a new comic obsession.

Whenever my mans and I attend WonderCon or APE (Alternative Press Expo) in SF, we make a point to look for Stuart Ng Books. Stuart sells gorgeous illustration, art, comic, animation and artists' sketch books - including many rare, imported and out of print. We usually leave his booth with a lighter wallet and an armful of books. Despite the herds of fanboys and fangirls (myself included) mobbing his stand, Stuart is always friendly, cheerful and kind. When we learned that he had a showroom in SoCal, we just had to visit. Nestled in a business complex, it's a medium sized, brightly lit, unassuming space filled with the aforementioned wares and it's dizzying with all the awesomeness that you can purchase. Examples: - Imported Art Books from around the world (Check out the CFSL.net / café salé artbooks 1 through 4) - Artists' Sketchbooks from all animation worlds (My faves are Shane Glines, Ragnar, Bill Pressing, Monsieur Z, Dupuy-Berberian, Pascal Campion -there's too much to list) - Small self-published art/sketchbooks (Gustavo Duarte, Antonio Lapone, Dustin Nguyen) - Rare sketchbooks (Mike Mignola limited edition sketchbooks) - Illustration magazines / Vintage Magazines (Flirt) - Art catalogs, programs, small collection of artist toys The staff are really chill and cool - You feel that they just love art & animation and want to share. Search on their website if you're looking for something in particular. They ship everywhere and if not, check out their store hours (limited) or find them at the next WonderCon / APE / ComiCon in San Diego / NY / Seattle and other conventions. I love Stuart Ng Books!

But, this is not all they offer. They also offer a lot of other things, depending on the location. Just as is the case with the stores around Tokyo, each Book-Off is somewhat different in their offerings. This Book-Off is no different. Over the many years that this Book-Off has been in business, it has witnessed an evolution in what they offer for sale. When they first opened, their basic commodity was books, and music, mostly via CDs, along with some movies on VHS and DVD. They also offered various computer games. Over the years these items have changed. At this location, their primary focus has remained on books, but they have also expanded. There has been periods of time when they even offered things like musical instruments. You'd walk by, look in their front window, and they'd have guitars hanging there. I think this is the great thing about the Book-Off stores. They are each unique locations, and though they do focus on books, each store is a very unique entity onto itself, offering a unique collection of which only that particular location focuses upon. As I write this review, what they're offering is books, CDs, DVDs, PC games, some PC controllers, and a little bit of everything else. In some ways, you never really know what you're going to find here, which makes this a fun shop to look into. This business is located on the lower level of the Del Amo Mall. It's close to stores like JCPenney's. So, it's never hard to find. It's right over by the escalators for those of you who know the mall. So, if you're looking for a book, some music, maybe a PC game, or maybe something else that you never knew that they would be offering, this may be your place to find it.

Online ordering for pick-up was a cinch; they got a specialty manga shipped within days and held it for me for over a week (just make sure you call in if you can't pick up in 7 days just in case). The website isn't the best, but it's usable if you know what you're looking for. Would come back if I wanted to order a specific item or wanted some unique gifts or beauty products. On busy days, it can get cramped fast in that little store, so be prepared.

Since each Kinokuniya is basically its own franchise, every store has a different vibe. This one leans more toward stationery and gifts than a huge selection of Japanese books or magazines. It's a great date spot, but not really the place to dig for rare anime or manga collectibles. The space is smaller than some of the other LA locations, and with Animate nearby, they don't carry every item you might expect. If you want something specific, just order ahead and use their buying service--it's the move.

While I was purusing, I heard the sales associates helpiing others with book searches and book club information. It sounds like they have a number of book clubs going at the same time which makes me green with envy. Somebody please open a bookstore like this in Santa Clarita Valley, Ca.! At the time of my visit there was a children's reading event going on in the children's section. There were young adults picking out their spring break reads. There is also a courtyard and coffee shop somewhat attached. I did not try the coffee, but will the next time I am in Manhattan Beach. This is a charming bookstore, well designed, with sooo many staff picks and recommendations. Make sure to pay them a visit when you are in the area. And if you live close by, I hate you :) I paid to park on the street very close to the shop, however there may be other parking I am not sure. Happy Reading!

They have a $2 dollar Japanese used manga section on the right side of the store and if you're learning Japanese, this is a great motivator. I've been to Japan a few times and if you want to feel like you've stepped into a portal to Japan for a brief second, this is the place to visit, they occasionally speak in Japanese over the intercom which is a nice touch. They also have Japanese literature, magazines, games, movies, etc. This place is incredible and it's super organized. Many cool finds I've come across here including an oversized GANTZ special edition set print for a very good price. One of the girls who works here even mentioned that they can specifically order books for you and you can buy them and pick them up there for a pretty decent rate. I've only had one bad experience with one guy worker here who got mad I was looking in the storage drawers located in every aisle, but almost everyone here is very kind. I've never had any other Bookoff discourage looking through the extra storage, it was very unusual, there's also no sign that says not to do so. You will occasionally even find books straight from Kinokuniya that are brand new sealed that have been discounted here. This is THE Bookoff to go to, I would say the other Bookoffs in comparison aren't even worth visiting. If you're in the area, this is a must visit for fans of this kind of merch.

Pluses: This is probably one of the better Book Off locations. Good variety of secondhand items…read more(note - they do have a magazine section which isn't secondhand), numerous old manga, and for the record collectors, some noteworthy vinyl (not a big selection and it's predominantly Japanese pop music). The store does well as a retro game store although you may have better luck with their Little Tokyo location. This will not have the feel of a Goodwill. It's far better. Also, I came here to sell some old games dating back to PS2 era and got a decent quote. A bit surprised. NOTE - your own case may vary, and they didn't take everything. Surprisingly they didn't take some old DVD's sets I had and I didn't have many. Minuses: This isn't a retro game store and it shows. Not many old game consoles available (Hard-Off does, and I believe Hard Off, which is part of the Book Off chain, is Japan only for now). Also, be realistic with what you have. Not everything will be eligible to be resold. Many old books and old anime titles likely won't make it. Although my quote was higher than I expected they didn't take some anime I had from the early 2000s (not very popular). In short, Book Off Gardena should be a very decent place to find what you are looking for. Now I can only wish Book Off brings Hard Off to the U.S. so that we can buy old cameras!
