Local outdoor music venue that seems to have remained the same through Austin's years of continual change. It's not a large area, definitely meant for a smaller crowd/show. We usually do GA and it's decent because the sound is pretty much spot on for most shows. A summer concert can be grueling but this is Texas...wear sunblock and hydrate. read more

Amazingly, Stubb's has managed to survive the ever changing landscape of Austin. Until recently, I hadn't been to Stubb's in many years. I'm so happy that Stubb's is still around (R.I.P. La Zona Rosa, Austin Music Hall, The Backyard, Erwin Center, The Parish) and it hasn't relocated (Emo's, Antone's). It may be surrounded by apartments and hotels, but for the most part, it is still the Stubb's that I remember from 20 years ago (minus a few changes to the amphitheater). I saw Teddy Swims a few weeks ago. It was a sold out show and the line to get in was literally down 9th street. It took about 30 minutes to get in. They had a clear bag policy in place. Oddly, they still searched items in clear bags which seemed to defeat the purpose. They've made some changes to the outdoor stage. VIP is in the back and is much larger than the old balcony. There's a dedicated area for porta potties and picnic tables in the back between the bar and VIP. They also had an area that served food. The lines at the bar were long, but they actually moved pretty quickly. The bartenders were super nice and gave generous pours. Drinks were reasonably priced for a music venue (cocktails were $12). The sound quality was great! I was able to find a spot in the back where I could see the stage and still have some space to move around. Teddy killed it as always! What an amazing musician! They had an after show indoors. Anyone with tickets to the main show could go for free (otherwise tickets for the after show were $10). It was a local band called Retro Cowgirl and they weren't bad. The inside small stage looks exactly the same as I remembered it! I have so many memories there including meeting my best friend of nearly 20 years at a Marc Broussard concert back in 2005. There's minimal street parking now that they've built apartments and hotels. I parked at a surface lot a few blocks away at First Baptist Church. I'm so happy that I was able to see a show at Stubb's. I don't get to go to shows in Austin as much anymore, but this was such a treat! read more

We tried to stand near the front but it smelled so bad like rotten eggs in the first few rows and had to move to the back. I'm not sure what it was but smelled like sewage and ruined the experience. They also only have porta potties (almost all were gross and dirty). There's also a tree you can see in the picture (when we moved farther back) that covered half the stage. Not to be anti tree but either move the stage or don't place it behind a tree where it's covering the singer and everything that's going on. The one thing I liked was the sound and that kept me from giving it a one star. There was also no good place to stand and actually see the show bc there was no slop to the ground and it was just flat. When we went super far to the back was when we actually were able to see the stage.overall poorly built amphitheater, smells bad, took abt an hour to check people in but performers were great. read more

I attended a show as part of Red River Cultural District's Free Week. The show was held on the smaller indoor stage instead of the larger outdoor one - even though it was winter, it was very hot inside likely due to the crowding. Checking in was very smooth, but I would hesitate to attend another show here due to how crowded the space was, even for a small act. read more

It's been a while since I've been to stubbs and 10+ years later it's just how I remember it. Kudos for consistency as it's a classic Austin spot... but unfortunately the parts that were consistent are the parts I don't personally enjoy about it. Our friend group arrived about 30 minutes before the show started and were able to get a spot about halfway back from the stage in the crowd. Unfortunately since it's all about the same level, they gave up their spots half way through since they were too short to see anything anyway. We came about 10 minutes before the show started and got a solid spot on the edge of the crowd. We were behind the big tree though so also couldn't see anything. It really seems like the way to go is to either be in VIP or be the first ones there. The line to get in flowed really well which was awesome ! It's important to note their bag policy. I definitely recommend just opting for a clear bag if you plan to bring one. They have a few bars around which helps the lines move quickly. I have to give them props for their portapotty situation! They have tons and they're all clean. Somehow it doesn't smell absolutely horrible where they are either. Plus they have running soap and water to wash your hands (yay) Overall it's a classic venue and great for shows but I don't personally enjoy coming here as you don't have much chance to get a good view of the show. read more

This review is based on my visit to see the band First Aid Kit on 9/13/23 (an ordinary Wednesday night, not a weekend). The primary feeling I got from attending a show at SWCA (if I may use that acronym) is of being processed, akin to cattle being herded into a huge pen. Pay $20 for parking, then get in a long line and go through airport-type security, clear bag/tiny bags only, please (because this is, after all, Texas, a mass-shooting-friendly state, you never know who's going to pop off), then pay between $8 and $16 for a can of beer at the concession stand, then stand and wait an interminable time for the opening act to get onstage. If you want to use a bathroom, there is a dedicated section of porta potties in the back which allows for privacy, at least. I'm not even going to mention the average ticket price, but it ain't cheap. There is, I reiterate, no place to sit in the SWCA aside from the toilets or some picnic benches in the back (unless you decide to sit on the ground, or pay extra for "premium seating" on a balcony overlooking the stage), which is fine when you're 23 but not so great when you're in your 50s or 60s and are obliged to stand for several hours. If it rains, it rains; try to get under a tree and deal with it. It's not a place to go if you like amenities, dislike crowds, appreciate being treated with consideration, dislike the feeling of being ripped off, or all four. Pro tip, if you decide to go: Leave before the last song (or at least the last encore) to beat the crowds at the exit. That's Red River for you. Mr. Stubblefield is rolling in his grave. read more

This place is nice and small for a music venue. Get there early if you like the band so you can get a good spot in line! The venue is very cute and a decent size. For being outside, it was still really great sound. We were all the way at the front (like 2 people behind the front barricade), and the sound wasn't mega cray loud, but when I went for a drink, I could still hear it just as loud. Great sound balance! The one things that sucks about this place is that it is outdoors. Meaning that when it rains, it can affect the show you're going to see. For this show, they ended up starting it 2 hours earlier and then cutting it short before the next big storm clouds arrived. I will give it to this venue that they were able to accommodate and we at least got to see all the bands and hear probably half of their set. Again though, I'd just be weary that if a band you ABSOLUTELY LOVE, there may be some disappointment if the clouds decide to cry. Another thing is that the bar and food stands DO NOT TAKE APPLE PAY. of course the one time I try to use Apple Pay so I don't have to carry my wallet, and they end up not taking it. So also heads up on that for everyone that uses their phone to pay for things. The end. read more

Why does every single value have to up-charge food & drink costs so much?! That's the only reason they don't get 5*. Lines were well managed coming in, and there's many food & drink spots within to get what you want and find a spot to stand for the show. We saw Vulfpeck here & found an OK spot by the back fence. Luckily, the breeze that night helped us keep cool. I saw Local Natives here a few weeks ago. Such a great show! The acoustics at Stubbs were of high quality, visuals were lovely even from afar and the weather was perfect that evening. Nice cool breeze, no humidity and a beautiful blue sky. Perfect for outdoor music. There were plenty of stands for grabbing beverages. I believe there was also a food stand. The merch booth was also well setup and I made off with a nice Local Natives bag and tshirt. The lines seemed to move quickly and the individuals working the booths were friendly, helpful and quick. They kept the lines moving along. Drop off and pick up by my Lyft wasn't too difficult. I just had to wait about 30 minutes after the concert b4 I could be picked up due to the road being momentarily closed off. There's a hotel bar across the street if you car to have a drink while waiting for your ride. This classic Austin venue was wonderful and I'm glad to have finally experienced it. Well worth the drive from Houston. It was a lovely night I'll never forget with a very friendly crowd of chill Local Natives fans like myself. read more

Can't say this is my favorite venue... First off, it's HUGE and has minimal incline, making visibility tough. It also has few places to lean or sit during a long concert. The bathrooms (aka porta potties) are far away and can take a while to get to if you have to squeeze past a thousand crowd members. Even the sounds have been hit or miss depending on the concert, due to the largeness of the venue and the fact that it's mostly open-air, allowing sound to dissipate. read more

Horrible horrible service at this venue. Didn't try the food as I was here a concert, staff and management do not communicate. Staff kept telling us to line up at one spot only to tell us we're in the wrong line. Management gives you an attitude for any comment you have. They lack respect and people skills. If they say doors open at x time. That's a lie. You go in whenever they let you. The time on the event doesn't matter. On top of all of this, we had to stand in line. Outside in the hot sun (currently 100°). While staff sat idly by under the shade with a fan, drinking cold water. They WOULD'T even offer us some water. I can understand if an artist needs more time before they let us into the venue, but the fact that they didn't communicate this and had us standing outside for an extra hour is ridiculous. LEARN . TO . COMMUNICATE . It's not that hard. Overall, would not recommend this place. Staff with attitude, they wont let you in even though they themselves set a door open time, selection of drinks is horrible. Restrooms for non VIP tickets are subpar. C- read more

I have been to this venue several times for concerts. It's an outdoor standing room only place that holds 2500 people. I check their website to see what bands are coming and buy tickets online for the bands I want to see. There is no designated parking at this venue. You have to park and pay wherever you can find parking near the venue. When you get to the venue you have to go through security. Ladies make sure you take a see through bag. Also have your tickets and ID ready to show at the entrance. Inside the venue there are portapotty bathrooms and a sink area with running water to wash your hands. There is a bar that sells water and drinks. I went to see Awolnation back in November of 2022. I got to the venue a little after they opened the doors and found a spot off to the side but semi close to the stage. I'm short so I have to be high enough to where I can see. If I try to get close to the stage it's impossible unless you are in the very front. It's a lot of time on your feet so I'd advise taking comfortable shoes. The outdoor atmosphere is cool but because it's outside I would suggest checking the weather before heading there. I had a good experience watching Awolnation. read more

What a cool hidden amphitheater! I had no idea this place existed and I've passed by it a million times, it's so big on the inside despite how it looks curbside! I attended the AfroTech day party and Wale performed! They have great food and drinks including the pulled pork sandwich with an amazing green sauce & a whiskey ginger ale which is a great mix. The customer service is awful, considering the type of event and people attending vs the type of people who work at the establishment gave a really bad vibe, like I wonder if it's always like that or if it's because of the event. I liked this venue for a show in March. They had plenty of drink counters so we never had to wait long to order drinks, the port-a-potties were clean, and the picnic table area was nice if you wanted to take a break from standing. We were all the way in the back and the view wasn't wonderful there, especially for us short people, but the sound was good and we had a great time. There are places nearby to grab food and drinks before or after your show, including a couple food trucks that said they would be out there til pretty late. It's nice to have options so I appreciated that. I'd definitely come see another show here if I have the chance. read more

Came to watch Coheed & Cambria. I will say for a packed show they had plenty of bars open and the lines weren't too long. Yes it's show pricing($10-12) for a cocktail. But still that's not too bad. What is even good about this place anymore lol? The workers they have there, all just scream at you while you're in line and are incredibly rude for no reason. We had guest passes and one of the staff members told us to "shut our fkn mouths" while waiting on them to sign us off the list... Been to this venue several times over the years and never experienced the treatment we received tonight. We heard this from so many strangers in the lines and in the crowd while we were there as well. However, if you're not first in line for whoever you're seeing to get to the front of the stage, good luck seeing anything. Great atmosphere, big open space and multiple bars to chose from. There is both an inside and outside stage, the one outside being fairly bigger. Every show I've seen here has been top quality and the staff has always been awesome. I will say, if you're getting anything other than a beer, the alcohol prices are higher than most places - I suggest pregaming a bit before coming to see a concert here...I sure did! Stubb's is probably one of my top favorite venues in Austin and you've got to see a concert here at least once! read more

I took my son to his first concert last Sunday (Sean Paul) at this venue and I've got a lot to say. Pro's: 1. Parking wasn't too bad. The Hilton next door had ample parking at a decent rate. 2. Security did a great job! Made me feel the place was safe without having an attitude which, is awesome and sets the foundation for the atmosphere. 3. There wasn't ever much of a line to buy a drink. 4. The general admission section is at a slight incline which COULD make for a better view (I'll explain later) and I liked that there was fenced off areas to section the audience. Cons: 1. The most important aspect of seeing live music is seeing and hearing it live! The sound system was horrible! I can't stress more about how someone dropped the ball on this aspect. It could be the sound system itself but, it was barely audible in the back half of the venue. I don't think they have speakers back there or maybe they weren't on. Really disappointing due to wanting to hear live music and not being able to hear it! 2. Why is there a huge canopy over the lighting engineer that totally blocks the view of the stage? It's not permanent and it wasn't raining so, that shouldn't have been taken down. There's a stairwell that goes to the upper VIP deck that completely obstructs the view of the stage. 3. Why isn't there a projection screen or something so the audience in the back, (including those that paid extra for VIP) could see what was happening on stage. That's not a major upgrade and really adds to the fan's experience. 4. I understand it's in the middle of downtown and there's a noise ordinance but, there's also several clever sound absorbing systems they could put into place but, doesn't appear they've done so. That does require some investment but, there would be a return on that long term. In summary, it appears that whoever is in charge of this venue did the math and made sure that there were plenty of drink booths available to increase their sales but, they've seriously neglected to take into account the overall experience of their clientele. This kind of tactic will increase their bottom line short term but, sales will fall if the sound and visual experience isn't fixed. I also asked a roadie there about the sound and was told that Stubbs used their own PA for this event so, that can't be blamed on this specific concert. Until these aspects are fixed. I wouldn't waste your money on this sad, rundown, sorry of an excuse venue. read more

It's an ok spot and they tend to have a lot of cool artists come through here. The drinks are expensive fyi. It's not my favorite venue but it's a good time. I love this concert venue. It doesn't get much more Austin than live music, above average BBQ, and about half a dozen different bars surrounding the perimeter of the audience. We have had dinner at Stubbs before a few shows, which is not the *best* BBQ in Austin but it's still solid. I love how you never really have to wait in line for long to get a drink, and even if you are you can still see and hear the music. Looking forward to more concerts here! read more

Good venue to crank up the music and sing along. I was here thus week for a catered event. They had an eighties coverband called the Spazmatics playing. It turned almost into a sing along. They actually played the interior stage there was a nice patio where they had fns blowing. This was great because there has been 100 plus degree weather all week. While once one of my favorite venues.... I probably won't be back for awhile. I recently went to a show that banned cell phone usage. They had no game plan and poorly trained staff. As someone who suffers from chronic back pain I stayed at the edge of the crowd and obeyed the rules. After having the same security person slam into my back twice with no announcement, ask the progress I've made is gone. I haven't been able to properly use my right arm since. I did see one security person announce that he was moving through, and used a flashlight. I wish they all did that. My physical therapist has his work cut out for him on Wednesday. I was worried about getting hurt by the crowd. It was the staff I should have been wary about. read more

When this sells out, it is a PACKED house. Not sure what their capacity is, but it is at it. Each time I go, it's a sold out show - so make sure you get your tickets early. Then, make sure you get to the line around 6:00pm for a 7:00pm show. Immediately get a shirt if you want it and then get drinks because it is going to be tight and if you leave the front of the arena you will never make it back. You will get to hear but not see the show. Trust me on this. If you do get to watch a show rather than just hear it, you are in for one awesomely close and intimate evening. One last pro tip. You BETTER get a parking ticket. The parking cops come at ALL times of the evening and love swinging by late in a show and ticket folks by the dozens. They arrive in a six person team and just fly down the roads ticketing people. Get a parking ticket! read more

Awesome outdoor venue in downtown Austin about 2 blocks from 6th street. Upstairs is the BBQ which I'd skip but the bar is open. The venue is GA so get there early if you wanna jam up front. But for quality acts in an intimate setting you can't go wrong. Well, if the Texas sky's open up and dump rain it does suck! I've been to multiple concerts at places like the Moody Center and the Moody Amphitheater and had no issue with my purse's size. Staff were also mean and smug about the rule.
