While Blessing is nice, I just cannot justify paying $50 for a press and curl, $30 for a trim (ridiculous!!) and $20 for a treatment. $100 for a basic service (in that location) for a basement level salon is absurd. I can only imagine how much a color or weave would cost. There are salons on Newbury street that don't even charge that much for that particular service. So I feel like the pricing is a rip off, considering the fact that the salon is not in a posh area. Please note, I wasn't expecting to pay $30 or something cheap. However, the $100 charge took me by surprise. Also, if you do go to studio 27, I would only recommend Blessing to do your hair. Another lady started doing my hair, I had to stop her because she wasn't careful and my hair started breaking. I am natural and its very obvious that you detangle starting from the tip to the root of the hair. But she was just raking the comb through my hair and that's a no no. My search continues for that perfect salon...great service and reasonable price list. read more

Angie is a truly phenomenal hairdresser who enjoys what she does and gives it her all! She never disappoints. I have been with her since 2012 and my hair had never looked so healthy as it does now thanks to Angie's unrelenting will to take care of my hair. I decided to go natural in 2014 and Angie had a great transition plan that has helped my hair grow stronger and in length as is my goal. I've always had my different type of hair extensions (underneath my natural hair) done by Angie, all with a leave out and never had any issues with blending the hairs--Angie explained and practically gave me a lesson on how to take care of it and I became a pro at blending the hair with no heat damage and little manipulation! Angie is also a great listener and will take her time to understand my hair's needs as far as styling goes, and will occasionally suggest new things (I am not very adventurous with hair, due to the nature of my job, and never wanted to experiment with color but Angie introduced me to simple summer highlights that I am just in love with!). Blessings is wonderful! I've been to her salon once before this visit which I will do my review on. The decor of the salon is very nice and professional. The upstairs is more of a reception area and the salon is located on the bottom floor. I was in a bind and really needed a hair cut. I remember that my first visit with blessings went well. So I gave her a call and Blessings was able to accommodate me given her already busy schedule. I walked in at 9am the next day, we did a consult, she washed, cut, blow dry and styled my hair all in under an hour. I loved the products she used, they left my hair feeling soft and silky. Today I had an apt with Blessing to remove my weave she put in 2 months ago. Then I was supposed to get my hair washed and set by Monica. This was my first weave. Clearly Blessing didn't have time. Some other woman took out my weave. It took an hour. Then because Monica was overbooked and didn't have time for me (I didn't find this out until 6pm when I finally got in her chair) the random woman washed my hair. So I am...or was...transitioning to natural hair. From 2-5 this woman basically tore my hair out trying to comb it out. She kept asking for help bc she was having a hard time. Eventually Blessing helped for about 5min. I sat from 5-6 waiting. At 6 Monica filled me on the fact that Blessing over booked her schedule. She went ahead a blew my hair out while I sat there crying as I realized my hair was ruined. I just let her finish and asked her to put it in a ponytail. I can't get it permed bc it's thinned in some areas. I can't put braids or another weave in for the same reason. So now I was told my only option is to probably get a short cut and start over. The whole reason for the weave...protective styles. Who knew the damage would come from taking out. Can't go back and I have no other options. I guess I'm going to NY for hair card now. read more

I've been going to Blessing for 13 years to get a shampoo and blowout since long before she opened this location. She has a talent for making your hair look silky and shiny, as it looks commercials, and I frequently get stopped by people asking for contact information for the stylist. The salon itself is meticulously clean and the interior design resembles a spa, so it feels very pleasant to be there. There's no one in the Boston area who is more conscientious and detail-oriented about styling hair or keeping a beautiful place than she is. Highly recommend! read more

Finally ... I found a place which does the right job for a man's haircut. I used to get my hair cut at a place convenient and the closest to home. The cut would be quick, the stylist not any special nice ... Going a few minutes out of my way brought me the best experience. The stylist at Studio27, Blessing, was adorable, nice and paid a lot of attention to what I had before and what I needed now, to make my hair look the best. I had the pleasure of working with the infamous Mercedes. I've heard great things about her from word of mouth and online. I decided to book an appointment with her for a press & curl, semi-color and trim. I've seen her work online and feel in love with her craft. I arrived early because I live far and I'm afraid of being late. Mercedes was kind enough to see me five minutes after I arrived even though I was early. She introduced herself and had a great vibe to her. I told her that I did have some grey strands but she didn't notice until she took a good look at my hair and proclaimed I was greying prematurely which, I don't think is accurate. A few strands here and there doesn't mean I'm greying prematurely. I was little taken back by that. But on to the service... she did an excellent job with washing my very thick and kinky hair. Most salons I have been to aren't as gentle and like to ripe through my hair when wet with a comb which is a no-no. Even when she blow dried and flat iron my hair she made sure to be very cautious which I appreciate. When she was done I was in awe. The color was so vibrant and shiny and my hair looked like I had a perm. It was so light and bouncy. I was not disappointed in the look at all. I did notice a burnt smell in my hair after I left though which can indicate heat damage. I did wash my hair and it felt like my curls were a little loose but that has yet to be determined because I'm still waiting for my hair to dry. Overall, the salon is very neat and clean. Everyone seems friendly when they greet you. The prices are a little high for me though. I'm not one to get my hair blow dried or press often. This was a one time treat for myself to see my actual length and get a good trim. I didn't have a bad experience but I won't be back anytime soon. read more

I made an appointment with Devin about 4-5 months ago and she colored and cut my hair. She knew exactly what she was doing and she really took her time to make sure it was exactly what I asked. Everyone that works there is super friendly and the space is really cute! The best part about the whole experience is that the color in my hair is still the same color and my roots are just now starting to show! This place is AMAZING. I just moved to Boston for graduate school and was on the hunt for great quality black hair care. I got a relaxer with Blessing and had a wonderful experience from start to finish. I showed up early and she apologized for being busy (which was totally fine because I was early) She made great conversation and asked me about my hair and any concerns/or questions I had - making me feel very comfortable. She was very quick with the relaxer and styling my hair. It was probably one of the fastest relaxers I've ever had - I was finished in under 2 hours. I relocated back to Boston and wanted to try a new salon rather than returning to the one I frequently visited (Liz's Hair Care) so I came across this and decided to give it a try. Sadly to say I was not pleased. The location is great and appearance nice, However, I am was not impressed with stylistist (don't remember name). I also did not like the seat setting when getting shampoo. Laying down flat is not my ideal position. Worst of all the water was COLD and the SA could not get it to a tolerable warm temperature. This would have been fine if I wasn't battling a cold, the freezing temperature outside and was shampoo about a hundred (a teeny exaggeration). The stylist, although she did nothing wrong, I was not impressed with her or the forced on conversations. Again I was battling the cold and was not up to chitchats. I regret to be so petty with my comments but I had expectations and sadly they fell short. My journey continues! read more

I've been going to Blessing for about a year and a half now. How do I love Studio 27? Let me count the ways: 1. She is great with my natural hair. I usually get a wash and blow dry, sometimes cornrows, sometimes a press, sometimes a treatment. Blessing is always great and gentle with my hair. In addition, whenever I get a press, my hair always bounces back to its original curl pattern. It has also grown so much over the past year and a half. 2. The salon is NICE. I have had several dramatic experiences with salons - I had one salon tell me, no, they couldn't do a wash and blow dry if my hair wasn't permed, true story - and I would usually end up in awful places in sketchy neighborhoods. Blessing's salon is a breath of fresh air, nicely decorated, pretty, and incredibly relaxing. 3. She is always prompt, and I've never had to wait around waiting to get my hair shampooed, or waiting between a shampoo and style. I really respect the fact that she does not double-book because it would be so easy for her to do this. 4. Finally, Blessing is amazing. She is a great person inside and out, and she takes a genuine interest in her clients as people. I tried to hide the "Blessing" so I could keep her all to myself, but then she got featured for Best Weave in Boston - so the secret is out. I already can't get same or next day appointments anymore, and with more Yelp reviews so I likely won't be able to get same week appointments either. But that's okay - she deserves it, and I'm just going to have to be more organized in the New Year and plan longer ahead. read more

ANGIE has been doing my hair for over 10 years! Not only is she amazingly talented in her craft of hair, she is very professional, kind and sweet. Angie has done different hair styles on my hair throughout the years. She knows I can be boring when it comes to styles but has made be feel comfortable with me wanting to try different things with my hair. She has always made me feel comfortable and confident with my hair. My hair is is super heathy thanks to her! I receive many complaints regarding how healthy my hair looks and is! I was excited to find out about the Salon since it was my neighborhood and impressed by the reviews. I went in for a relaxer touch up and was assured that it included cutting my dead ends. The relaxer ($90) look pretty good but not great. Well, I was charged for having the split ends cut which normally comes with any touch up. It advertised that I would receive a $10 discount as a new client...I didn't get it. So the cost of getting a "trim" was $30 and I didn't find out until they had already charged my visit to my credit card. I didn't like the fact that the studio is in the basement of the building and the stairs to get down there didn't seem safe and was not handicapped accessible. They now have raised their prices since the "top" hairdresser believes that she deserves more than the others and uses a former employer's reputation as part of her resume. I knew the employer and her skills didn't even come close to what would I have received there and that was long before there had been more advancements in how to relax hair and my hair does not require a strong relaxer. She comes across as being overly charming which tends to make you put your guard down but your antennae still rises. I've had more talented hairdressers for less and will not return. read more

I have been to many salons around the Boston area - Studio 27 is a cute salon with a comforting atmosphere. I typically go for a wash and press, I have had consistent results each time (I value a good press since I have been chemical free for 8 years now) I have been going for over a year now. I was initially worried about the location since it can be quite busy, but I have braved down there in rush hour traffic after work to see Blessing, my hair always is grateful for it. A pet peeve of mine has been time at other salons, sometimes I would just block out half my day for my hair, not at Studio 27, I am in and out (I'm sure this depends on what you get done and quantity of hair). Another thing I personally love is there is an app for the salon, so I can book it, save it to my calendar, and when I go in my card is saved so that's another convenience for me - no more runs to an ATM or waiting in a line to pay for me! I've honestly never been to a more friendly and professional salon.
