He made sure to ask a lot of questions about what I was looking for, gave me really good advice on how to keep my hair healthy, and the finished product looks great. Okay, so little backstory: I had been going to the same woman to cut my har since around 2008. Rachel was simply an artist who talked to me about my hair every time, explained how it grew, gave me great tips, and could even tell when I was eating a bad diet by my hair. She was amazing, and we became friends. A few months ago Rachel moved. I was devastated. I was losing a friend and the person I trusted most with my hair. I didn't think I would find someone on that level again. A month after Rachel had moved I moved to Toluca Lake. I remembered my friend Eduardo got his hair cut in Toluca Lake and since Eddie always has great hair asked him for a recommendation. He sent me to Ricardo. Ricardo is amazing. I would give 6 stars if I could. Ricardo is absolutely top notch. When I told him what style I was going for, he asked clarifying questions and made suggestions for what might work better for my hair. I took his suggestions, and they ended up being the difference between a mediocre cut and a fantastic one. During the actual haircut, it was obvious that he knows what he is doing. He made sure that the length of the hair matched up in every direction, and he was precise and deliberate with details. Following the haircut, he shampooed, dried, and styled the hair. They try to push you to use their online booking system instead of over the phone, which is fine, but it comes with some issues. First two cuts went fine and booked me over a call. Third, I called three days in advance to book before a big event and he said to look online for availability. Considering we were days away and it was for a Monday, literally every spot was open. I selected 11am and was approved. At 10:45am that day, I got a call asking if I was coming to my 10:45 appointment or if I had to cancel (I was literally on my way). Let me add in here that with the online system, he requires a $15 deposit which I've never seen in my life, especially for a $40 haircut at a small shop in Burbank/Toluca. I reiterated that my appointment was for 11am and I was handed to Ricardo who said "you may have picked 11am, but you were approved for 10:45am" which makes no sense since I was looking at the screenshot of my 11am appointment. It was very shady and I had to threaten to write a Yelp for him to even refund me my money. He did refund it, hence why it's a 2 star and not a 1 star and the two times I did go to them, it was a decent cut. Beware of their online system, the "deposit" and their unprofessionalism when trying to book an appointment. Was trying to support local shops since COVID, but they can kick rocks and I'll be going to the new place I found that day after dealing with that and demanding the refund from Millan. Despite the fact that I have asked him to give me a more conservative cut for my recent work search, he has consistently given me a very balanced and layered cut that has consistently garnered me compliments. In general, was a bit skeptical going to a hair stylist for all the usual reasons; only for women, too expensive, weird hairspray smells etc. -- Prided myself on being a $12 haircut kinda fella. That changed once I woke up to the fact that my mane was in need of a serious overhaul.. Found Ricardo on yelp and gave him the green light to be artistic and create something sharp and professional. Had high expectations going in and couldn't be happier with the results. Since the change, have gotten numerous compliments and family, friends, and colleagues really notice the difference. Ricardo also has good bedside manner? don't know if that term is applicable here, but he explains how to take care of your hair and scalp in laymans terms and offers advice on how to keep the cut looking fresh.
