Randy has taken my hair from red to black in one sitting, black to silver in one sitting, and he's the only person in DC who I know will give me exactly the cut and color I'm looking for every time--miraculously, without ever damaging my hair! I have a very short cut that I call the'imp' [because it's a pixie but with attitude], which I typically wear spiked, but occasionally prefer to style so that it's a bit softer. Somehow Randy manages to cut it so that I can style it however I feel that day with incredibly minimal effort [like, we're talking 14-year-old-boy-level effort]. He's also always learning new techniques and is great at explaining them to me so that I can riff on them by myself in between touch-ups. In other words, I trust Randy so much with my hair that I trust his ability to help me trust myself with it. Not easy. Whether you know exactly what you want and are extremely wary of stylists taking unsolicited liberties with your hair, or whether you prefer someone who will provide recommendations on cut/color/style, Randy is one of the most versatile and dedicated stylists I've ever had. He'll go out of his way to make sure he has 'your' toner, color, etc., on hand, plus a few backups just in case. [Another bonus: all the other staff are fantastic as well and I've never had to wait more than a couple days for an appointment.] TL;DR: 11/10 would recommend Randy and Studio Salon. read more

I was instantly taken away by this salon. The ones that I have went to before never offered me water or had entertainment screens while you waited under the hair dryer. I haven't gotten my hair done in 2.5 years. This was my first time out the house to enjoy myself in a few months since I have a newborn. My husband was gracious enough to tell me to leave the house and he'll take care of our daughter (he never told me while I was out but apparently for the 5 hours I was gone she was being a nonstop crying and screaming demon lol). So basically, I NEEDED this hair makeover. My hair stylist was Tony and he's an absolute sweetheart! He had such spunk, was so cute in his compliments, and always kept the conversation going (which none of the salons I've been to even tried to have a conversation). I have followed Kambiz to three different locations, and always come back to see him for a cut (and occasionally color) no matter where I live. Kambiz did my hair for my wedding, as well as my ENTIRE BRIDAL PARTY. The hairstyle was perfect, and my bridesmaids all looked amazing. HORRIBLE!!! I came in looking to get subtle layers. I'm left with a three inch disconnect from the hair I have in the front of my face, to the rest of my head. The shampoo was horrible, whoever shampooed me left my back completely drenched. The shampoo's have plastic steps as foot rests very cheap considering how much a haircut is. The place looks very tacky. I'm not sure why the entire salon is one tone of brown, or why there is a thick layer of dust on everything. I will never come here again. read more

I've been going here for a few years and while I love my current stylist, I am starting to think they are just way too expensive. My last few appointments I have been taken aback at how expensive my bill was. This last time I only had my roots touched up and a blow dry and style and it was $115! No cut, no highlights....just my roots and a blow dry and style and it was nothing special. And the stylist did someone else's hair in between my color and blow out when there wasn't really time so I ended up being there extra long. The front desk staff are very nice but the two owners are not very friendly either. I know it must be a tough business to run but they are never friendly and as business owners I would expect more. It seems they are only nice to their customers. I live in the area so it's convenient but I'm going to start to shop around. Also, as others have posted about massage services. This is not the place to get one. They only have one small room for spa services and waxing and the two pedicure chairs are right outside of it. Just not the atmosphere for a massage. read more

RANDY is my Fairy Godfather. After seeing him, my hair lived happily ever after. See, what had happened was... Once upon a time, there was a young girl who went to Salon Istanbul in Ballston. She asked for ashy, platinum (think Britney Spears "Femme Fetale") blond balayage. She left, however, with streaks of oxidized iron; carelessly painted all over her head as if her stylist had been going through his Abstract Period. The young girl is me, and my hair was Grimm at the beginning of this fairy tale. Everything about the rusty color was wicked, and not in a New England, "Wicked cool!" sort of way. More like, "My evil step sisters cruelly destroyed my dress that my mice and bird friends spent all day fixing so that I could look sexy AF at the Royal Ball" sort of way. Rather than dramatically run out into the backyard of my chateau (more like the courtyard of my apartment complex) weep, and lose faith in my dreams of blond balayage, I went and saw Randy. Randy is enchanting, and his talents are magical. We spent 20 minutes talking about how to transform my tattered locks into exactly what I had originally wanted. With the waive of his magical applicator wand, he bippity-boppity-booed blond balayage into my hair. He neutralized what was left of the brass by using toner. Then, as if he was changing a pumpkin into a stagecoach, he painted on some face framing highlights, and foiled in some low lights. I feel like "Becky with the good hair," only I'll find slay my own Prince Charming. #ROYALBALLREADY #SEXYAF #LONGHAIRDONTCARE If you want to skip right to your happy ending, go and see Randy. My hair is really fine and it's been always very difficult to get volume, I hated cutting it because it would take forever to grow and looked like I had less hair. After I started working with Tony I've actually cut it 3 times in a matter in 2 months and my hair keeps growing back and is healthier than ever. He did a layered cut which makes me look like I have a lot of hair even when I don't. He also did an amazing balaye, i've gotten soooooooo many compliments. I've had some negative experiences in the past year with various salons but I'm very happy to have found Studio in Shirlington. The atmosphere is relaxing, which is what I need after a hectic day. The lighting is dim and the colors are dark and rich, but there are clever spotlights that allow the stylists to see their clients well. My hair was colored and cut by Tony. He is very friendly and calming, understands design and will also speak French (his native language) if you want. He zeroed in on a beautiful mix of colors for my hair right away. Other colorists have tried different combinations without success. I am trying to let my hair grow, but Tony was able to fine tune my cut so that it is easier for me to style and will grow out gracefully. I was way overdue for a hair appt. Instantly I felt relieved and comfortable with him. I believe It says something when you choose to follow your stylist to a new place. Randy is someone who understands YOU, your hair, and how you wear it outside of the salon chair. It's a beautiful space. It's open warm and friendly. A Separate shampoo area, that feels secluded and relaxing.

I went in for a Deva Curl Cut and left feeling disappointed. It was only after I was in the chair that I realized they do not use Deva Curl Products for a Deva Curl Cut, but they do advertise a Deva Cut on their website. After the stylist deemed my hair to be "too dry" to cut for a dry but he washed my hair, did minor cuts. After that he styled it with non-deva curl products and dried it. Then did a few more cuts with it dry and was surprised I was not enthusiastic about it. My ends still look frayed and need more closer attention. Plus side, everyone was very nice and the facility is lovely. However if you love your curls and use the Deva Curl system take your curls somewhere else. read more

I was very happy with this salon. I have had a cut and partial highlights with Gina twice now, and both times I loved what she did with my thick curly hair. The first time I came in with a coupon, which they honored with no upcharge. The second time I came in they gave me 20% off list prices, which they said was part of the deal with the coupon I had brought in the first time, but I sure didn't know anything about it.
