Another culinary venture from the dynamic duo, JP & Boss. They are the brothers behind Secret Congee (Shilshoe), Ginger & Scallion (Stumbletown), and Okonomiyaki Jiban Ya (Northlake). This is a pop up hosted at Janet's Stumbletown, a stone's throw from Ginger & Scallion. This is for an initial two month residency Wednesdays to Sundays 11am to 3pm. First, pack your patience finding street parking in this busy retail & residential area on NW 65th. I was eventually able to find a 2 hour slot nearby. I was the first customer in the door for the soft opening. It was great to see both Janet (owner of both Stumbletown and Chocolat Vitale) and Boss onsite. Orders and payment are placed at the register. Good to see JP and his team also at the kitchen line. Various seating at Stumbletown: bar & counter seating, booths, and as one to three tops flanked with a banquette. Pleasant interior with natural light and a decent soundtrack overhead. I ordered the Caesar salad and the House 8oz sirloin cap steak with mushroom bordelaise. I stuck with water, but other beverages can be ordered separately from the Stumbletown bar. The fries/frites are cooked in beef tallow. The sirloin is prepared with a garlic butter thyme baste. The menu has both 4oz or 8oz steaks and three sauces to choose from. I enjoyed the Caesar salad. The butter lettuce was well dressed with accompanying parmesan cheese shavings and tiny croutons. The frites were topped with the steak slices, thinly sliced mushrooms in the red wine sauce, and garnished with finely minced shallots and chives. As my first meal of the day "brunch", overall this was nicely presented and prepared. Packed full of flavor and left satisfied but not stuffed. Just right and completed in about 45 minutes. Doable if one has to get back to work. Might want to get coffee after to stave off any potential food coma, lol. I'd rate this 4.5, rounded to a 5. Great dining choice with earlier hours that's easier on the wallet in today's economy. read more

I went with friends on a weekend for a late lunch. It was pretty empty so we got a table right away. After we were seated, we were told that the menu was out of date. We each ended up getting a sandwich and sharing a large fry. The fries were good especially with the aioli sauce that was included for dipping. I got a chicken parm sandwich. It wasn't mind blowing by any means but it was a good sandwich. This is also one of the sandwiches that was not listed on the old menu. I don't tend to crave sandwiches so I can't give a better review beyond it was good. I would recommend getting the fries though. read more

I heard about this gin-focused bar and restaurant from a friend and had to check it out as gin is my favorite spirit. It's not a common favorite for others, and I often find most menus to be lacking in creative gin specials. Stumbletown fixed that problem for me. With a dedicated menu for gin cocktails to an extensive array of different distillers, I was amazed. We enjoyed our cocktails thoroughly and also enjoyed some light bites. The arancini was a special of the evening and came out perfectly hot and crispy. The calamari was also fried very well. I did dock a star because about 80% of the food items on the menu were unavailable even though it wasn't closing yet. We did also get a little lost and ended up at stumbletown's sandwich shop before we found our way here. Luckily they're close by each other! read more

The food is never disappointing here. The chef takes considerable attention to both the prep of the food but also presentation. There's a lot of pride apparent with the service staff -- from the bartender who is so highly articulate, to the chef who takes such pride and the dishes. The menu has undergone some really nice evolution in the last year and a half. I have never thought of myself as a particular fan of meatball sandwiches but after trying the one here during happy hour I would say I'm a fan. I love Freedom to try one of the 285 varieties of gin...on the rocks. I come with one particular friend who is a big fan of the Japanese gins, and we explore a different bottle every time. If you've never tried their house gin and tonic it's delicious because the tonic is unique and locally made. But I probably find the Spanish gin and tonic my favorite. Large pieces of sliced cucumber and pink peppercorn. Don't forget dessert here. There is a film noir theme to most of the posters and a wall of windows that brings in amazing light. I like to sit at the bar just because it gives me a little more space, but it's also nice to hear the people you're dining with when you're sitting at a table or in one of their booths. read more

Went on a week night and it was relatively dead. We sat in the bar. The bartender/server was great, kind, welcoming and had opinions on the food. He made great cocktails: a special gin thing and a black manhattan. Had the pasta. Everything was lovely. Look forward to discovering more of the menu. This place is truly a paradise for Gin lovers! The first thing you notice when you walk in is their huge gin wall. We made a reservation for Saturday and were quickly seated when we arrived. They have a huge selection of Gin cocktails. But, we ordred the gin flight from around the world as it seemed like the place to try it. We got to try gin from India, Colombia, Mexico and Japan. It was a fun experience comparing the different Gin, I would highly recommend it. The food was tasty too. We got the mussels, meatball burger and Brussels sprouts. Everything was so delicious. My friends live near here and suggested it and I can't have gluten or dairy but just went along for the ride, figuring I'd get myself a bag of chips and a meat plate or something. To my surprise, I could eat multiple items if they put the cheese on the side and the server (maybe the owner/manager? Unsure) gave us a little extra of some things so we could all try--we were celebrating my friend's graduation. I really liked the beef tagliata and the roasted sprouts. Joli is an intimate bar in the Ballard area close to the Goodwill and a couple minutes west of Green Lake. We made reservations online at 8:30pm and were seated immediately for a party of two. They are mainly a gin bar with martinis, gin cocktails, and gin flights on their drinks menu. My first drink was the gin-icillin ($17) which was a penicillin but with gin. It was smoky from the Laphroaig but had that clean flavor that was easy to drink. My second drink was the last word ($18) which was not on the menu but was just as delicious as the first drink if not more so. We had a funny conversation with our server afterward where he said that they barely had enough green chartreuse for my drink and just finished the rest of the bottle themselves. For food we ordered the truffles fries ($9) and they were a very good shareable snack with nice truffle flavors and aromas. My boyfriend and I were looking for a cozy, neighborhood feel kind of restaurant while visiting Seattle. We found Joli and it had good reviews and the ambiance looked cool. While the ambiance was cool and loved how it looked inside, the food was just meh. I feel bad saying that but we just weren't blown away by the food. The chicken sandwich was too crispy for my liking, if that makes sense. This chic, Asian/Mexican fusion restaurant is severely underrated and deserves every bit of attention and recognition! New management has completely turned this place around into a 5 star facility, and it is not common that a place can give me 5 star service. My expectations were exceeded. Every dish I tried was phenomenal, I kid you not. Ingredients I never thought would go together actually worked. My biggest favorites were: 1, corn bisque, which I will surely dream about. Served cold and unlike anything I've ever tasted. The blend of sweet creamy corn bisque, chili oil, a little radish and green onion...it's the ultimate comfort food dish that pulls you in within the first bite and leaves you wanting to order 5 more after. And 2: the charred broccolini. Wow...do not pass this one up. Even the pickiest of eaters who don't like veggies will fall in love with this dish. The crunchy chili flakes are excellent enough to be paired with just about anything, and really compliments the char on the broccolini without it being overwhelming. A light spiciness with great flavor and adds to the delicious creamed green garlic sauce. With a new curated menu about every month, you're able to try different things and find new favorites. No two dishes taste alike, they each have their own unique flavors. The servers are knowledgeable with the menu items, very personable and make you feel right at home. They also have an extended amount of gin's; if that isn't your thing, their other drinks are just as great, including lavender or sage lemonade. Do NOT sleep on this place! Came out on a random Thursday and boy was this place packed! This may be the hot place to grab some seats at the bar and to order a few drinks, but the food fell a bit underwhelming. I ordered the burger and my wife ordered the truffle fries and the Brussels sprouts. Burger: huge burger and definitely satiates your craving for meat. The cheese was heavy (a good thing) and it was very saucy and delicious. The cucumbers hit pretty weird at first, but as you continue with the burger, it was actually pretty fitting and added a nice refreshing crunch. The burger itself could be seasoned a tad bit more, but overall it was pretty solid. Fries: a must with burgers or beer. It was a tad salty (which ironically, could have been added to the burger), but it did it's job. Brussel sprouts: now this is the tricky part. At first, I LOVED it. It had this sweetness to it that I never tasted before, which I'm attributing to the honey vinegar. Very reminiscent of balsamic vinegar. But as I continued on, the sweetness became a bit overwhelming, and I had to step away from it for a while. Definitely for a sweet tooth like me, but maybe a bit too sweet for my overall liking. Overall, not bad of a restaurant. The service was a bit slow, as there seemed to be only one server managing the food flow of the entire place. I'll be up for trying their happy hour menu and dabble in their myriad of gins. But that can wait for another day. read more

After another 20 or so minutes, new meatballs were delivered. The centers were completely raw. Server took them back to kitchen and said she wouldn't charge me. Jolie is one of my fan favorites. I've been going for four years. The chicken sandwich is to die for and the fries. My boyfriend and I were actually planning on trying Gorgeous George's but we found out they are take out only at the moment so we ended up at Joli, but I'm so happy we did! Very cute chic restaurant with incredible food! We devoured everything we ordered - the bacon jam Joli burger, the fried chicken sandwich, and the heirloom tomato melon salad. My favorite was the fried chicken sandwich - it's also enormous! The heirloom salad was almost too pretty to eat but man, was it good. I almost wanted to lick the plate clean. What a fun restaurant!! A nice burger bar in Ballard in a good location, I grabbed a quick bite before heading home at the bar. Awesome spot for late night happy hour. My partner and I were looking for something in the neighborhood still serving food at 10 pm and came across Joli. We ordered the sliders (three come in an order and you can mix and match), brussel sprouts and fries. Portions were generous for happy hour and we really liked the dishes. My least favorite was the 50:50 slider which I assume was beef and pork, but my partner enjoyed the chicken and pork belly sliders, so we'll probably stick to just those ones next time. The happy hour menu is pretty big and I've already bookmarked several dishes to try next time. Beyond the food, I really enjoyed the vibe here. My sandwich was amazing! All the ingredients were great quality. I asked for a mimosa and the bartender, Johnny, made the PERFECT one with freshly squeezed orange juice. I've been eyeing this place for a while since we're so close by, plus the free fries with Yelp check-in is always a bonus. Sadly, I didn't leave that impressed. We ordered the free fries, gin chips, cauliflower, and chicken. My main complaint was that everything except the cauliflower was too salty. None of the flavors really stood out to me either. Despite that, the fries were definitely addicting and nice and skinny, just the way I like them. And surprisingly, I really liked the peas in the chicken dish; they actually stood out in a nice way and helped with the saltiness. Overall, Joli was just mediocre and pricey, much like any other restaurant in Seattle. Perhaps their brunch is better, but I don't think I'll be back anytime soon. read more

Wow, wow, wow! Where do I start? The atmosphere of Joli is like a lounge complete with a chill soundtrack on the speakers and a 5-star wait staff who are warm, friendly, and chatty in a relaxed and genuine manner. The interior is lovely to look at, a great place to bring friends and family. Of course, the first thing I ordered was a drink. It nearly blew my socks off, these guys have a wide variety of gin, and know how to utilize each variety to make the perfect cocktail. Every drink has been meticulously analyzed and personalized to each type of gin, paired with the selection of ingredients that should be used as the ultimate complement. My favorite in particular is their take on the Singapore Sling, which is saying a lot since that's my favorite drink of all time. It would have been gone in 5 seconds if I didn't intentionally slow down and savor the flavor. I ordered a few different drinks and they were all sublime, that one just stood out to me the most. And just when I thought it couldn't get any better, their steak put El Gaucho to shame, and they're only charging $24 for it? Duck fat fries? This meal was to die for. The compound butter they put on was something unique and well-thought out as well. Make this a destination, you've got to try this place out. Darling little neighborhood dinner spot. Came here feeling medium hunger and left pretty satisfied splitting one of each small, medium, and large plate accompanied with a gin flight. I appreciate the focus on gin (which admittedly isn't my favorite spirit) but like they have so many options and flights you can get. The food seemed slightly on the greasy side and I had a hard time eating much of the chicken due to the heavy handed salt seasoning on it but my company seemed to enjoy it. I really enjoyed the cauliflower medium dish and would get that again as it was packed with flavor and differing textures. Our first visit to Joli so sharing first impressions. Let me start by saying that with an advertised "largest selection of gin in the country", we had high expectations for the experience. I would admit that it is likely that we are not their target customer. First off, the good, actually really good. The FOOD. It wasn't what we originally went in for but were pleasantly surprised with the flavor, quality, and presentation. We ordered the risotto (perfect execution of al dente, singular grains and snap peas/asparagus) and the chicken sandwich (nice portion and flavors with no one ingredient out-staging the other). Bravo. Moving on to the GIN, let me explain as context helps. They offer 3 different types of flights by category (unique, barrel aged, rare) and a wall full of different types of gin and a healthy G&T, martini, and mixed cocktail menu. In full disclosure, we are not gin experts so we went in with the expectation to learn something from people who are. This is where we went wrong. There was no description of the types of gins we were wanted to help with ordering, when we asked questions, answers were general and dismissive and required the poor server to go ask someone else for gin related answers. (not blaming her but the backup) Not what I would have expected from a GIN bar. Reservations were easy to arrange and the ambience was lovely. I assume that the real audience here would be for people who know their gin, are better able to articulate what they want and are looking for, and just want a good drink. read more

I was so happy to see that Joli had indoor seating. Made for a perfect Sunday brunch. They have the interior set up perfectly for safety and made it as contactless as possible during this time of COVID. I ordered the Banana-Chocolate French toast that came with side options, from which I chose bacon and eggs. You guys.. let me tell you... the banana-chocolate french toast was literally a remedy for everything going on. If you like chocolate and bananas, as you should, you will not be disappointed. We went here for the first time since CoVID on Xmas Eve to splurge on a nice dinner. They're doing a great job on the distancing, their ordering website is awesome and I love that it lets you easily make modifications. You can also call to make orders. Everything was delicious. I loved that the drink I got was in a little tiny bottle, I was worried about spillage but that made it so easy. Everything was perfectly labeled when we got hone so there was no confusion on what was what. I also loved that they gave happy hour prices for takeout.
