I love going there and eat their ice cream but tonight, it was just not very good. I saw 3 staff didnt use their gloves when handling toppings, etc. Im Deaf so I typed down what I wanted on my phone and the lady that works there put my phone in the bowl that is used to put all the ingredients! Yelpers are saying there isn't much flavor. But I don't want people to avoid the experience just because of these reviews. It is a unique experience that kids and adults alike will enjoy. It did just open so I think the staff is still working out the kinks and getting to know the menu just like us. But I wont hold that against them. We will all soon learn what is the best concoction. My fiance ordered a large, and being the health nut that I am, I rolled my eyes thinking to myself, "his eyes are bigger than his stomach. I'm sold. I first heard about Subzero when the founders were featured on Shark Tank last year. The concept looked cool. But when I saw that a Subzero was opening on Mass Ave I worried that it would ruin the local flavor. Let me just say that they've executed it very well, and made it feel very local while delivering a quality product. The design is retro diner meets the Jetsons meets chemistry chic. It's bright and fun. And the ice cream is... wow. It is much creamier than regular ice cream, and the flavors are more subtle. Might it be some of the best ice cream I've ever had? It might be. I chose premium cream, chocolate flavor, and a graham cracker mix-in. (You choose your base, and as many flavors as you'd like, and one mix-in. Extra mix-ins are 50 cents each.) I haven't tasted the vegan versions (almond milk/soy milk/rice milk), but it's quite cool that they offer them. read more

Maybe its because I jumped on this bandwagon after all the hype that I am a fan of this unique ice cream parlor. I don't ever have any issues with treating myself to some fresh custard ice cream from SubZero. Then again, I'm that loser who is going to get ice cream at noon on a Tuesday. Whatevs. So... don't hate me, but I'm not a froyo fan. Never liked the stuff. Its like comparing diet soda with the real stuff. It just tastes like "diet food". And I don't like a bunch of candy in my ice cream, so that's out too. Call me an "ice cream purist" because I think ice cream should be just that: cream that is frozen. What's the point of ice cream if its going to be fat free? The first time I tried this ice cream shop, I was a little confused about the process. The guy who mans the counter explained the process to me: 1) Pick your cream - includes regular milk-based creams, lactose free, vegan and sugar free options. 2) Pick your flavor - from standard chocolate to wacky bubble gum! 3) Pick your mix-ins - pretty standard stuff. Once you're done deciding your life away, stand back and be entertained by the "freezer creamer dance"! Ya like that? I just made that up. They spray the cream with liquid nitrogen and pound out the iced cream with a metal spatula. Apparently, this process makes a creamier ice cream that will not melt as fast. To be fair, it does last me from Mass Ave to my office on the west side of downtown. Pretty durable stuff. And the fact that they have custard ice cream is reason enough for me to go there. It brings me back to my childhood when I used to get egg custard ice cream from the small town grocery store. It's a no-frills ice cream that stands on its own. Great place for personalized nitrogen ice cream! Nothing is pre-mixed so you can order whatever flavor with whatever toppings. Their cream base doesn't have eggs, and they have a vegan option for a base which is a nice addition to an ice cream shop. I'm notorious among my friends for having a plan but when faced with too many choices (or a large menu) panicking and choosing the first thing I see. They call this the Bud Light syndrome. This place has an overwhelming number of possible combinations. This is not a bad thing however a challenge for me. I chose the cinnamon base and then true to form and in a rush, I chose snickers candy as my mix in. But, despite my best efforts to sabotage myself, the ice cream was really good! My fiance chose brownie batter which was delicious too. Bottom line-- I think you could choose to mix any combo with the premium ice cream and you will not be disappointed. This place is fun to visit and bring friends because it does have a good amount of drama in the making of the ice cream with nitrogen. Drove friends of ours from NYC to SubZero only to be told (politely at first and rudely after we started asking questions) that their boss told them to close at 9:00. Of course they didn't update it on Yelp, so we arrived at 9:30. Very disappointed to not be able to enjoy ice cream, but after the way the employees acted they were more concerned about going home early than providing a fun experience for our guests. One of the employees thought she would loose her job if they served us. "IceCream isn't worth loosing my job over". I hate to break it to her, but her job IS ice cream. It smelled like ice cream, sort of looked like ice cream, ice cream toppings were displayed behind the counter, but it did not taste like ice cream. Or anything at all. My friends and I were strolling Mass Ave and thought ice cream sounded like a great idea. In we go. The first gal who attempted to help us referred us to another employee who would "explain the process." Explaining the process ended up being asking what we wanted and not much else. Basically you choose your milk base (low fat milk, yogurt, custard, almond milk, etc.) and then whatever flavor and toppings you want. They mix it all up in a bowl and then hit it with nitrogen to freeze your concoction, mix it up some more, and then put it in your selected container. And then you "enjoy!" So here is what we attempted to consume: - I had the Cinnamon Roll Reaction with cake batter chunks, cinnamon, cookie dough, and pecans with an almond milk base. Luckily I got the small size because I would have hated to waste anymore of the product. As a whole it lacked flavor and tasted like an under flavored iced drink. Hardly any chunks of cookie dough or cake batter. Ick. - Chocolate Conduction was edible but still not very good. It at least did taste like chocolate but again it was more like an iced glob of goop in a cup with a few small random brownie bites. - Strawberry Shake. The ONLY thing we ordered that tasted any good. Basically tasted like an overly sugar-filled strawberry shake. I think I just pinpointed the problem in the other items: lack of sugar. - Iced Mocha shake thing. I just...it was...I can't even describe... I hate to be rude sounding, I do. It's just that if I get a rare hankering for ice cream, I want a cup or bowl full of ass fattening chocolate with hunks of candy bars and other fatty stuff to really satisfy my hankering. Warmest day we've had in a month (59 degrees in Jan) so what else to do but head to this ice cream heaven! So many options sure to satisfy even the pickiest, lactose free options, too. We tried 2 sensation picks - cherry charge and bernoulli brulee. The cherry charge was super sweet with an explosion of maraschino's and chocolate chips, tastes just like a cherry cordial. Bernoulli brulee was a pefect creamy texture with tid bits of heath and twix candies swirled with carmel and cinnamon. Both come with a waffle bowl. Yummy! The names of their "Sensation" ice creams are clever. Well done. But that is about the extent of my infatuation with Sub Zero. Is the concept cool: you betcha. Is the execution phenom: not so much. For some reason I keep coming back hoping that maybe I just had a bad experience - but at least they are consist. It's mediocre. I got the Citric Substance on my last visit and all I could think was about the Lemon Heads commercial. The amount of citric acid that was dumped in made my lips pucker up-and stay stuck. Located in the middle of Mass Ave. it is a nice pit stop to take a break during a busy day or shopping trip around the city! The whole draw factor is how the product is made, liquid nitrogen. When I first walked inside, I was a bit over whelmed with all the different options and how the process went, the employees were very helpful in explaining what options I had and how each step worked. The first step was to decide what base I wanted, with options of ice cream, yogurt, and non-fat. The next was to pick the different flavors I wanted. Then I chose a topping. After they gather all the ingredients to your recipe, they play around with it in the fog of the nitrogen and out comes a delicious scoop of, in my case, ice cream! The price of this experience is a little more than ordinary ice cream but I guess you are paying for a new, different experience than your average Dairy Queen. They have limited seating in the store, but luckily we did not go at a busy time! We sat at one of the booths and really enjoyed the product! The ice cream was very cold and frozen, so I actually let mine sit for a little to melt. I did enjoy the ice cream very much, the consistency, the flavors, and of course my own spin of toppings! The line was crazy long when I went, but we got through rather quickly and were able to get a table (kind of tough because there isn't much seating). The ice cream was good and I loved customizing every detail but it was not much of an ~experience~ due to the long line. The men on the line were polite and helpful though the man checking us out was clearly not loving life. Honestly, he was okay with me, but very rude to my friends when they did not hear him correctly when giving us receipts/asking for signatures, etc. For the price and the craziness I wouldn't make this a destination but more a stop along the way if you really need something sweet. read more

This place... has executed a pretty cool idea. It's a place you can take your kid to have them marvel at science and then eat it. My issues with it: -It's expensive -Majorly understaffed- once on a weeknight and once on a weekend-- if you are going to charge mega money for ice cream (I know it's an experience as well) maybe you can afford one more hourly employee. We shared a small, low-fat ice cream with cheesecake flavor added and cookie dough mixer. It was tasty and delicious. The process is a little slower, but it's neat to watch and there are plenty of taste combinations to discuss while you wait. It's basically Cold Stone...with several key differences: instead of JUST having ice cream, they have regular and low-fat ice cream, soy milk, almond milk, custard, and yogurt...and the almond, soy, and yogurt are available sweetened or un-sweetened. instead of pre-made ice cream that's mixed on a cold stone, the ice cream is still liquid and it's frozen right in front of your eyes with liquid nitrogen and mixed in a steel bowl. no cross-contamination! Every bowl is NEW so only your flavors will be in there. I think some of the people complaining about flavor got something unsweetened and didn't tell the person to add sugar to it. Someone even said the problem was "not enough sugar" but they had ordered almond milk. The stuff isn't naturally sweet. Next time I go, I'm going to get pumpkin and cinnamon flavors with graham cracker mixer...frozen pumpkin pie!! I had 2 other combinations all planned out by the time I ordered, but when I go someplace for the first time I usually go with the standard cookie dough/cheesecake combo to establish a baseline. Another complaint is that the motion detectors in the bathroom are useless. I walked in and it stayed dark. I walked out and walked back in, stomped around and waved, and the lights came on. I started washing my hands. They went out again. I waved my hands in the darkness but to no avail. I finished washing my hands and dried them in total darkness. The unique idea that sets this place apart from other FroYo shops is that you pick your dairy base (or non-dairy if you want) and flavoring, then they quickly freeze it on the spot with liquid nitrogen. You finish it off with toppings. The concept is neat but my first ice cream was sort of so-so, I blame myself for letting the wife pick out the ingredients. The biggest negative for many will be that there are so many options for flavoring on the board that the permutations of options/bases makes it a difficult choice. They also didn't have powdered Coco. Lastly they had people coming in 15 minuets to close, it wasn't crazy busy, but they had customers, and then they locked the door 6 minutes early on a group of 7 people that were walking up to the door. I felt bad for them, and it seemed extremely rude. I left without buying anything, because I couldn't find anything that worked for me. Mmmmmmmmmmmm this is some gooooood ice cream! We paid 7$ for a dish of heaven. The ice cream has a carmel-like consistency and seems to not melt quite as fast as the normal stuff... but maybe we just ate it faster. It's in a perfect little bikable spot off the cultural trail on Mass ave. We went around 9 pm on a weekday and the wait was about 5 minutes but I would imagine the line being crazy long on the weekend. The staff was upbeat, energetic, and seemed happy to see us. I feel bad about writing a 1 star review but I don't think I've ever been this disappointed in ice cream before! And I promise promise promise that my disappointment is not due to high expectations. So what exactly was wrong with my ice cream? Well: 1) Texture. Freezing with liquid nitrogen is supposed to result in a much smoother ice cream because the ice crystals are a lot smaller. This was definitely not the case for my order. The texture was not good at all, even though I chose Premium Cream as my base. It was more like the ice cream I made for a high school experiment using Ziploc bags, ice, and salt. I think this may be a problem of consistency because the lady before me had ice cream that came out looking much smoother. My friend ordered her yogurt after me and had the same problem with the texture. 2) The flavor. Oh my god, the flavor. The combination I got was Mint and Chocolate flavors with Oreos as my mix-ins. Pretty normal, right? I don't know if this was an accident or just the amount they normally use, but it was WAY too much mint. Normally I love mint flavors but this was intense. It's not like they used fresh mint leaves, either. The mint syrup comes straight out of a pump. The worst part wasn't the actual taste but the cooling effect that makes it hard to taste other flavors. It overpowered the chocolate and even the sweetness of the Oreos. It was very hard to finish and by the end, I couldn't wait to get the taste out of my mouth. My friend ordered her yogurt with lemon and some sort of berry as her flavors and more berries as her mix-ins. It sounded like it would be a decent combination. But again, this was a failure. I don't know if it just wasn't mixed well but the flavors just did not blend together at all. I didn't eat too much of it but my friend said that there was just something off about the taste. On the bright side, the employees that helped me were very friendly. I didn't feel rushed in picking my flavors and toppings even though there was a line. Will I be coming here again? Probably not unless I was with someone who really wanted to try it or if I'm feeling super brave. I'm super sad about this because I was hoping this could be my go-to place for ice cream. Store-bought ice cream would have been much more satisfying. I've even had liquid nitrogen ice cream made by undergraduate students (Chemistry majors I think, not Ice Cream Majors) that was much better than this in both taste and texture. read more

A nice place for a sweet treat while on Mass Ave. There are a billion flavor combos to choose from and options like soy milk. A nice selection of toppings too! The line may seem daunting, but if you've got some time to kill, wait your turn and chat with your friends. If this is your first time to the place and you're a little indecisive, I'd suggest going with at least one other person so you can step out of line and really get a good look at the menu. Part of the allure of the place is the actual making of the frozen treat, but it does seem to hold up the line a bit. I love ice cream so I was excited to see what all the hype was about with SubZero. My friend and I waited in line for about 25 minutes which is normal for this place. I wasn't too bothered with the wait as they seemed to be moving quite fast to meet the demand. The interior has some "cool" (haha sorry) decor. There's a big Nitrogen tank and cute little booths set up. It was fascinating to see the ice cream being made! You're just paying for that coolness factor, though. The ice cream flavors were just alright. The texture wasn't anything that different from normal ice cream. The place was PACKED and the only thing that bothered me was that the trash was overflowing. I get that the staff was working really hard to make the ice cream, but maybe they need an extra person to keep the trash and seating area clean. Overall, the ice cream is good but I would only go back if I was with someone who hadn't had the "experience" before. read more

Subzero gets 5 stars for unique presentation -- it's like going to a hibachi grill for ice cream! It's a fun experience watching your ice cream go from liquid base to frozen treat right before your eyes. If you don't enjoy the big WHOOOSH of liquid nitrogen filling the air, then well, you just don't know how to have fun. I also give 5 stars for dietary options. I eat everything, obviously, but I see how it'd be harder to find tasty frozen goodies if you were vegan, lactose intolerant, paleo, dieting, whatever. This place offers soy and almond milks, in addition to low fat milk, yogurt, custard, etc., which is nice for peeps with dietary restrictions. That being said, if you're one who eats everything and wants to maximize flavor, I recommend you get the custard or premium ice cream base instead of being all virtuous and getting some low fat nonsense. Also get mix-ins that spread well, like chocolate sauce, strawberries, etc. Read the other reviews that talk about blandness, and you'll get where I'm going with this. I still recommend you check this place out at least once, just because the process is fun, and it's something different from normal self-serve fro yo. Be prepared for a wait during busy times (i.e. summer in general). It takes a sec to measure out the goodies and do the whole freezy routine for each customer, so the line moves slowly. It makes sense though that the reviews are all over the place since it seems like it would be easy to have very different experiences from one visit to the next with their process for making each serving. More guidance on picking flavors and toppings to mix in would be an improvement, but I threw both cake batter and brownie batter in there along with graham cracker crumbles. They squirt the flavors in from little bottles so I'm guessing depending on the day your ice cream could be much better or worse depending on how much they put in. The ice cream was really good, and my small serving was actually more than enough for me. It was a little frozen on the outside (almost like there was a small ice layer over it) but the taste was really good and it didn't detract from the flavor. I love that you get to order everything from your mix ins and flavors to even what your dairy product is! And if your belly doesn't like dairy they have other options for you like almond milk based! This is the ice cream place of Indy. Whenever my family or a friend visits town, Sub Zero Creamery is always on my list of places to take them. If you ha e children (or are a child at heart) their ice cream making process is incredible. They use some nitrogen based freezing method to freeze your choice of milk (they have six different milk options to choose from) and mix any topping you want to create your unique ice cream dish. The price point is $5-$7, so its not cheap, but the chic atmosphere and neat experience makes it worth it. I gave three stars because the ice cream is like a 6 on a 10 scale. I will start with the bad news, the overall "experience" isn't great. For starters this place will 100% be crowded. In fact, the line is probably out the door. Once you get in the door, it's TIGHT. The workers are all young which is to be expected and truly not overly thrilled to be working there. When it comes to answering questions, they aren't going to go above and beyond. I will say they more than likely do not get much a break with the constant flow of people. With that being said, I think the ice cream is incredible. I actually get the Frozen Yogurt which is the best Froyo I've ever had. It's light but also extremely tasteful. Getting to make up your own combination of mix in's and flavoring can seem a tad bit overwhelming but once you get the right combination, it's totally worth it. read more
