I absolutely love the cocktails and the vibe here! My personal favorites are 'the accidental tourist and the penicillin'- (Must try if you like whisky). This place is a good spot for date nights and also perfect for celebrations. We had made a reservation for about 20 people this past weekend for my boyfriend's birthday. When we came in, the owner of the bar came up to us to check in, wished him and handed out cupcakes on the house for the group. The cupcakes were delicious and we especially loved the ones with pretzels. The staff was nice and attentive. The place got a bit crowded post 10 pm and there was another group celebrating a birthday but the service was still very good and bartender was rotating throughout the bar area to make sure everyone was well attended to. I can't thank Subject enough for making everything so easy for my 25th Birthday! I was stressing out prior trying to find a place that can fit 25-30 people comfortably - but then I found Subject on Yelp and the reviews are all super accurate. All my friends are still talking about the place and one of my friends even said "Guys... I can't get over how great the drinks were last night." At Subject they take pride in their craftsmanship by not only bringing you a finely made drink, but putting the man power into freshly juicing everything and using homemade syrups for any soda. I was feeling adventurous and Matt wanted me to try his newly minted drink. I don't remember what was in it, but the combination of rosemary, pear juice, lemon and gin made for a sweet cocktail! Held a birthday party here Saturday night and everything went wonderfully! Management was easy-going and communicated well prior to the event. Has some friends in town and wanted to just sit back and enjoy some drinks and convo before dinner. Did a little yelp searching and found this place. Made a reservation a week before and they were SOOO nice over the phone. I was a little taken back by it but it was sooo refreshing how nice and accommodating they were. We show up like 10 minutes before 7pm and the guys at the front asks to see ID and showed us to our little reserved area. They had reserved it with my name and I was so happy!! The place isn't big, but it's a good layout with a nice big C shaped bar. Lots of plants and lights made it feel cozy. Our bartender had a good shaking technique and the drinks were bomb. MY favorite of all was "thyme last forever" or something like that. Very refreshing and pretty to hold. My only turn off was a big super loud group at the other end of the bar that at one point started hollering and holding up a cardboards head cut out of D. Trump (eyebrow raise). My husband and I visited New York from Nashville right before Christmas. We were meeting a friend for dinner in the Lower East Side, and looked up happy hours on yelp for somewhere to go beforehand. Subject was such a great experience. We got there around 6 and were some of the only folks at the bar. Our bartender Holly was super friendly, and she gave us lots of tips for our trip (we ended up at Bar Goto the next night thanks to her- also great!) We both loved each of the cocktails we got, and it was just a cozy, lovely atmosphere, decorated with Christmas lights, books, and plants. I know there are hundreds of bars in New York, but I would go back here in a heartbeat next time I'm in town. This place was just right up my alley. Thank you Holly! read more

Your pal Johnny -- no stranger to fancy cocktails or, for that matter, scandalous gossip -- is a bit conflicted about the purpose of this joint. Sure, it's a cocktail place, but what's the hook? The service here is great and the establishment certainly did its best to make the outdoor shelters feel somewhat less hellish than the wooden arson trap they truly are by adding plant life, but the drinks have gone downhill since the days before the pandemic. The drinks are simply not as inventive or as eccentric as Lovers of Today. I get that this place is trying to survive, like many bars these days. But the drinks? Society Street is a love child between a Manhattan and an Old Fashioned gone horribly wrong. The bourbon/cognac/creme de peche combo felt -- to your pal's taste buds -- more like a bunch of guys on the street asked to attend a live taping for a pilot at the last minute. Sure, you got the audience. But was it the right one? And that's the thing about this place. It's been around for years, but doesn't really have a defined look or a feel. Even accounting for the fact that your pal Johnny ended up with a large bar tab because he was on one of the worst dates imaginable -- one of those bland and boring bourgie grifters who delights in watching you blowing your week's pay but who nurses her drink in a way that makes it impossible to leave until she's finished it; meanwhile, you're ordering another and then she gulps the rest down so SHE can order another; oldest goddamned trick in the book -- I can't really summon any enthusiasm for the place. I came alone and planned on hanging out when a group of drunk individuals accosted me and started insulting my person for being slightly within 6 feet despite the fact they weren't wearing masks and were NOT social distancing. Enjoyed this more casual, easy to get to, but speakeasy-esque cocktail bar in LES. Came here on a Saturday night around 9pm with a friend and able to get a small table near the front. What's annoying is that you have to order drinks from the bartenders, so we still had to make our way to the bar even though we had a table. Cocktails are about $14 each, which is super reasonable for cocktails like these. Their menu has a lot of selections, but I ended up describing what I liked to the bartender, and he made me a customized drink. Was very delicious! Then I went back for the same thing but "stronger", and he did it :) extra alcohol for me at no extra charge makes for a happy girl. My friend and I both enjoyed our time and the cocktails, we ended up staying for 3 each. We ended up eventually moving to the bar for easier access to the bartenders who were very friendly. Subject is what happens when you take a comfortable, nondescript neighborhood watering hole and just start serving quality food, cocktails and beer with a smile. This is a very relaxed bar, and if you didn't know better, you would never peg it for a cocktail joint. It looks like a normal, semi-dive bar. The difference is they serve quality quaffs and tasty snacks at reasonable prices. They have a tight list of original drinks and spins on classic cocktails. The Chai Old Fashioned is great. One of the most compelling things however is the vintage soda machine they use to make their own in house phosphates, which are absolutely stellar. Upon my first visit I tried a standalone shot of the cola, which they are thinking about bottling and selling. And they should, because it is BONKERS GOOD. Not overly sweet, and brimming with herbal and nutty notes, it's a clean, light but high flavor cola that is very addictive. On THE LIST, and somewhere I will definitely return. What a find! I just had my birthday party here, and they were able to easily accommodate a largish group (20-25 people) on a Saturday night. And ALL Saturday night at that- we stayed until at least 1 am. I made the reservation about a month in advance after attempting with several other bars with no luck. Other bars I talked to couldn't do reservations on weekends, could only do less than 10 people, only allowed reservations if you spent $2000 to rent out the back room, etc. Subject, on the other hand, allowed my reservation at no extra charge and with no drink minimums- the only limitation was that it had to start before 10 pm. But don't let the availability of reservations make you think Subject isn't popular - it got pretty packed! And with good reason: the drinks are fantastic but not horrendously expensive, it's unpretentious, and the owner is a really awesome, friendly guy. He's happy for you to bring outside food or even order delivery to the bar. I felt like he genuinely cared about whether I was having a good time. All the cocktails I had were quite tasty. All the sodas and bitters are made in-house. If you try one thing, go for a nutella-infused whiskey shot. Dangerously good! Added bonus: there's Star Trek pinball. read more

I like this little hidden gem. I usually come here for open mics. The hospitality is great and the drinks are very unique. The bar makes their own juice and soda so the cocktails are always so refreshing. My fave bartender is Jay (I believe that's his name) super sweet guy and he makes this ginger cocktail that's to die for. Ginger is my go to now, for my cocktails, thanks to him. His ginger cocktail is not on the menu, but if he's there he will happily make it for you. Prices are typical Manhattan prices, but they do have a happy hour and you can bring food into the bar. Apparently it's a relatively new place, but the owner/bartender seems like he's been doing this his whole life. This is a pretty cool neighborhood bar. We shot here for an episode of our web series #RTSWFL. The owner or manager (I'm not sure but his name is Matt) was very kind to us. We had a number of request and occupied his space for quite some time. Some great people passed through. I can tell you for sure that Matt is a cool guy. Now onto the drinks. His drinks are good. He actually makes many of the juices himself. He told us how to make cranberry juice because he makes it for the bar. He also made the ginger ale that he serves as well. It's definitely a neighborhood bar. For this reason, it was good and bad. We were there fairly early (~9pm Saturday night), so I loved that it wasn't too crowded or too loud. YES - you could actually hear the person next to you! The bartenders were friendly and helpful. The drinks... are interesting. They're good but could use some refining, both in terms of taste and presentation. I tried rest in peace and another specialty I wish I could remember and both were tasty but something was just a tad off the mark for the taste. I think with a little more experience these bartenders will craft something even better and a little more mature. They drinks could use a little "oomph" cosmetically. I don't think they're using the right glasses/size of glasses for the drinks. The drinks kinda look like the type of drink you'd have at friends house... the type of friend that swears he's a closet mixologist and you have to try his latest weird concoction. This is a nice place to just hang out and talk over a few drinks with friends or even a date. I came on a Tuesday night and it was quiet and almost empty minus the 2 people at the bar and the 2 people playing pinball in the back. You definitely don't get any pretentious vibes here, which is a huge plus - I can't stand pretentious cocktail bars. The cocktails are really creative and fun. I tried the first one on the menu. I forgot its name, but it had peach and vodka in it. Strong, delicious, and flowery. I liked it. The chai old fashioned was definitely too strong and bitter for me, but if you're into whiskey, I'm sure you'll like it. The bartender was also so friendly and nice. My new favorite bar and new favorite bartenders. We were served by Leslie and Katie, both super knowledgeable, charismatic, and great at what they do. I have weird taste in cocktails -- I like savory drinks with clear spirits, like Bloody Marys and dirty martinis, which rarely show up on nighttime menus. Leslie handled my partner's orders and handed me off to Katie for her expertise in spicy stuff. Katie introduced me to Gordon's Breakfast, a gin-based, vegetal, spicy drink, and made me a few inspired variations. Music was uniformly great rock played at the perfect volume: quiet enough that your friends can hear you, loud enough that the folks at the next table won't. Decor is trendy but unpretentious. Tables are the perfect size. Enough of a crowd at 11pm on a Friday to feel exciting and energized, but not crowded. The bottomless peanuts are an awesome snack. Focus here seems to be on well made cocktails. Which is delightful unless you are in a line behind a bunch of people. But I liked the place, the staff was great. My only complaint, which is admittedly weird, is that the toilet in the bathroom is placed at a very strange angle that causes anxiety. I stopped by here with my friends on a thursday evening to start off celebrating a friend's 21st. We walked in around 8pm and found the bar almost empty and very clean. Happy hour was until 9pm and so we took advantage of some of the deals. 1) The Boozy Slushie (?) in watermelon at $6 was easy to down drink for all of my friends. It was refreshing and had a subtle flavor to it. 2) Shots + PBR for $6 was another cheap deal! I gave my beer to my friends and just took shots instead to avoid running to the bathroom. 3) Lemon Drops were just amazing... Just enough of lemon juice and vodka. By the time we jumped to a different bar it was around 9:30 and definitely more crowded.
