But it seemed I had provided a lot of aid to an entree that should have been self-sufficient. 3 stars. The side of rice was ample, and packed a pungent dose of annato (achiote), the ingredient that gives Spanish rice its characteristic color and flavor pop. 4 stars. Based on a couple of tortas, this humble family-run spot killed it on the food. Everything was fresh as it could be, and the kitchen does not skimp on the more-expensive ingredients like avocado and meat, or any other ingredient for that matter. These were sizeable sandwiches. Lengua was tender and succulent, and the wife thought the chorizo was great, too. The tortas are served with fries that were better than they looked (which was rather Ore-Ida-ish)--piping hot with some crispiness to them. I was only a little bummed because it was only after our food was on the way that I realized that the restaurant has pozole on Sundays. Santo Niño occupies a spot in a shabby and grim strip center on the western edge of town. Don't be deterred by this. The business inside is hardly fancy, but it has a warm and comforting feel.

My partner got the special which was fresh trout filet, blackened, with fresh mango/pineapple salsa. Also amazing. For dessert we ordered the chocolate brownie sundae with vanilla ice cream. OMG!
