This was a nice find! It is a quaint country diner with friendly service. We ordered a chicken biscuit with egg with country potatoes along with eggs and corned beef hash and a side of biscuits with gravy. Everything was great. The food came out quickly and was tasty.

Breakfast was incredible! The atmosphere is perfect for a diner. The place is busy, but they are able to seat you quickly. Great hospitality and a cool vibe.

Great breakfast place; now open for dinner Thursday and Friday. Omelet was perfect - fluffy, buttery, loaded with filling. Good coffee. Friendly, knowledgeable wait staff.

Great breakfast spot. I checked the reviews prior to my visit, must be the competition giving the negative reviews. This location was spot on. Friday morning and the place was packed. Since it was just me I sat at the counter where I could see all of the food coming out of the kitchen. Everything looked great. I wish I could have eaten more. I went with two pancakes, sausage and a biscuit with sausage gravy. Everything I had was delicious. My service was outstanding. Wishing I had a place like this back home.

Listen, these 5 stars are for my EXPERIENCE. And I had a great experience. This little place is a hidden gem. Our server Dee Ann took very good care of my dad and me. We sat down for breakfast and I asked her what are some of the things that were a must try. Obviously, their pancakes. I wanted to try the biscuit gravy, so I ordered a side of gravy, some crispy bacon, and some scrambled eggs. I wanted the full mountain breakfast experience. All of my food came out wonderfully hot. The pancakes were big and fluffy, the bacon was perfectly crispy and my two scrambled eggs were perfect. The restaurant is a cute little southern mountain Grill. The walls are lined with old license plates and obviously there are probably a lot of stories to tell from the years they have been in business. As we were leaving, we asked Dee Ann for some recommendations on must do while in town. She gave us some great ideas. We had a great time. As we were leaving, a group of older locals came walking in with their canes and walkers. Nice to know I picked a good spot.

While venturing out and about we decided to stop into Mary's Southern Grill. This restaurant is in a strip mall right off of hwy 17 and 515. Parking is interesting. When entering we were amazed how much bigger it was. We were greeted and seated right away. We were asked for breakfast or lunch. Lunch menu we said but wanted the breakfast menu to look over. The hostess and our waitress (Meg) were extremely welcoming. They had booths for 6 and smaller tables. The noise level was quite low considering the room. After looking over the menus we ordered lunch. My spouse ordered the open faced Roast Beef. It comes with mashed potatoes and your choice of bread (white, wheat, rye or sourdough). I ordered the Southern Fried Chicken sandwich with a slice of cheese and fries (crispy please). We both ordered iced tea. We had our meal in less than 10. Wow large potions. The chicken breast had a very light and flavorful coating. My fries were perfectly crisp. My spouses open faced Roast Beef was really good too! Texas toast was nicely toasted and had large portion of potatoes. We didn't have to add any salt or pepper. Everything was seasoned perfect. Our waitress, Meg, checked on us regularly even though she had half the restaurant. She even gave us drinks to go. We will definitely be back. Want to try her breakfast. Breakfast menu was small but have a nice variety. I highly recommend Mary's if you want a solid lunch. There is also seating at a bar. You can see by the clientele that the locals love the restaurant as most were regulars.

Kids Cheese burger and one filet local mountain trout.

My wife and I enjoyed a late lunch at this popular locally owned family restaurant. Because of the size of the burgers, she opted for the kids Cheese burger, and I ordered one filet of blackened local mountain trout with jalapeno cole slaw. While the presentation of the food on the plate was not the best, the food was excellent. The staff were personable and professional. I enjoyed the memorabilia and license plates on the walls.

I have never had a meal at Mary's that I didn't really like. The service is good, and I like the southern cooking.

I wanted to try their pancakes but didn't want a full stack, and our server Robin was wonderful in recommending the Sweet Start. One thing we really appreciated is that all breakfast entrees include coffee or tea, and the prices are already very reasonable. We were also pleasantly surprised to learn that even though we ordered specialty coffees, we could still enjoy complimentary refills of regular coffee. The restaurant has a charming and unique atmosphere, with every table looking a little different from the next. For my meal, I ordered the Sweet Start, which included one pancake, eggs, and bacon. I also appreciated the transparency from the staff. When I asked for an extra serving of their homemade pecan butter, I was informed upfront that there would be an additional charge....a level of honesty that's surprisingly rare these days. My husband ordered the Banana Nut French Toast comes with homemade whipped cream and homemade pecan butter, which also came with bacon. He added a side of eggs as well. Everything was delicious. I'm especially particular about pancakes, and I can honestly say they serve some of the best pancakes I've had. The food was excellent, the service was friendly and attentive, and what stood out most was how genuinely happy all the staff seemed to be. It created a warm and welcoming atmosphere that made our visit even more enjoyable. We would definitely return the next time we're in the area.

The meat and three along with the vegetable only options are welcomed changes to the family style only meal for those desiring smaller portions. In our experience, the food was served hot and was perfectly prepared. We chose white meat chicken and received two large breast that were excellent! All were served fresh with two biscuits and two corn muffins. The relish, apple butter and Sogrum-sage butter were delightful. We were blessed to have April for our server, and highly recommend her for your visit. She shared the history of the area and is proud of the changes and history of the Dillard House. Thank you for a great meal. The fried chicken is better than I remembered. Yes, the restaurant is open, and parts of the motel are being remodeled/updated and the new hotel is under construction. Say for 15 minutes before the manager had to obtain a server for our table. After the food was delivered, the server did not provide adequate service. Along with friend catfish filets, that had been way over salted. Both were very soggy. I ate half the thigh and quit. Veggies? Only vegetables were Lima beans, everything else considered vegetables, was a casserole. A table full of starches. Over rated and over priced. Sadly disappointed. If you want good southern food, go further south to Thomasville, GA. Go to O'Neals. You can fool some folks, but not someone that knows southern cooking. We won't return.

As we were being seated, we noticed all the cute decor! Someone took a lot of time to make the place look so cute! The waitress was super attentive! Hubby ordered the special, a Meatball sandwich and I ordered a salad with fried chicken tenders... I had to cheat a little bit. That Fried Chicken was calling my name! The food came out after a little bit of a wait. I completely understand because the chicken was fresh. But my poor hubby got a mess of a sandwich. It appears they made the sandwich and it sat while the chicken cooked. It was a soppy soggy mess. The bread was drenched and completely mush. He said the French Fries weren't much better. I asked him if he could eat just the meatballs and he picked up them each up with a fork and each and everyone of them were completely black on one side. Totally burned. Boy I felt bad because my chicken was delicious! This is the reason I added two stars. We went to pay, my husband leaving his hot mess in his plate. The owner was at the cash register, I found this out because she answered the phone while checking us out (stating her name was Julie). She was in such a mood, she was rude to the person on the phone placing an orderIn fact she was even rude to us, she scared the bjesus out of me....so we didn't say a word. I sure didn't want to complain and start an altercation . Hubby will never go back. He was not happy at all. I might go back, maybe with a friend and hope next time is better ‍ Possibly everyone was having a bad day? It was not crowded when we dined, as it was around 2:30pm. We thought this would be an asset, but we were wrong. Here is hoping it was an off day for them. Dine at your own risk my friends. Stay away from soggy sandwiches! Go for the fried chicken

I noticed the window sign said "Angie's Clayton Cafe" and whilst being seated at 11:45AM on Tuesday June 2, 2026, noted the wall art had changed, no more local memorabilia, and the menu is now a well worn, two sheet pieces of copy paper. No problem, the place was nearing capacity per usual and we did get a window seated table. But, then I noticed, no collard greens on the menu. So, if you read my earlier reviews, you will note that I have eaten at quite a few "meat and three" style country diners and that I also know how to cook this food at home. That's a big qualifier, because Clayton Cafe had become a part of our destination trip to Clayton from Greenville, SC. It was just that good, a notch above the crowd. I didn't find this experience to be the same. The decor, service, ambiance was the same. Even the same crowd starting a 15 minute table wait shortly after noon. Business has not suffered, but the food is not the same. Overall, everything was less flavorful, more bland. The highlight, the white sawmill gravy was piping hot and flowed well, not a gloopy mess and I like that it was served on the side. The country fried steak was tender, but it had less crunch on the crust and was significantly bland - pepper and salt please. The green beans had a small chunk of meat involved, but they too were very bland and lacked a depth of flavor expected from the hamhock, the biscuit was good, but not the buttery crusty biscuit if yore. The okra was straight up flour breading with no cornmeal in the mixture and that's a game changer on this dish. Fried chicken was good. Squash, or squash casserole was a bland mess and left uneaten. Don't get me wrong. This three star rating means "OK". It's still a good meat and three. It's just not an exceptional meat and three as experiences my multiple prior visits. So that's when I asked the server if the restaurant had changed owners and yes, in April 2026. Well, there ya go, but Bon Chance to the new owners and Godspeed towards the hard work and keeping it going. Obviously, a full house lunch crowd on a Tuesday in June shows positive momentum. I'm just saying, pay attention to flavor, both in depth and complexity, to make these Southern standards stand out from the meat and three crowd.
