Unfortunately, under new ownership, this place has really gone downhill!…read more We went on a Friday night in July and the place was empty- this should have been our first clue. My husband and daughter ordered the Turkey sandwich- which used to be our absolute favorite sandwich. This time it was bone dry, lacked flavor, and was about half the size it used to be. It was a small pile of salty, dry meat on a roll. This sandwich used to be juicy, flavorful, and the portion was so generous that you could not eat the whole thing in one sitting. This time- it was so small, but nobody ate it all because it was so bad. I decided to try something different and ordered the Rueben. I asked the server (owner?) how it is and she said: "I don't eat Reuben, but people who do say it's the best they've ever had." So, I gave it a try. I can say with certainty that nobody has ever said that this sandwich was the best Reuben they've ever had. It was literally inedible. The meat had no flavor, and it was so fatty and rubbery that I literally could not even bite through it. When she came back to ask how it was, I politely told her that it was not good and she didn't apologize, take it away, or offer to take of off the bill. She told my husband to hurry up before I ate his sandwich instead and then walked away. So it sat untouched and we paid for it. I'm sorry now that we did. We should have insisted that she take it off the bill. Also, we ordered mozzarella sticks- they were not fried long enough and/or they were expired because they were mealy on the inside. Just nasty, honestly. And I know a lot of people don't care about this sort of thing, but I don't drink expired soda. I received a can of Diet Coke that was expired by five months. We left there disgusted and disappointed. This used to be one of our favorite places, but we will NOT be going back again.

The waitress was super accommodating because we had a child with. Right away, she asked if we would like crayons or cars. The toy cars were a huge hit for the child and kept him entertained the whole time. It was a great thing since the restaurant was pretty full. As for food, it was standard diner food, just what I wanted. I got the veggie omelet, which was pretty good. It was a very thin egg layer and filled with veggies. I think the mushrooms were canned, but they didn't necessarily taste like it. The rye toast was also tasty. My friend got the beast burger, which we thought was super interesting to have that combo of meats on the menu. It did need some condiments as the combo of lean meats made it a little dry, but it had a good flavor. We also got the 9er, which was just the right amount of food for a child. Overall, we had 5 star service and the food was just what we needed on the road trip.

We ordered an omelet, biscuit and gravy, and two bagel sandwiches. The plates do not come with anything additional and are kind of pricey as stand alone items. But, I owe it to the chef and his wife, the front of the restaurant manager, to do so. The food is very, very good, excellent! The chef is very talented and melds flavors together with seemingly some kind of magic wand! When you drive up and enter, the facade and the interior is typical of classic old school Northwoods bar/restaurant, . Then the soft lighting, . The one man band, pretty darn good by the way, . The well made drinks, . Ice water automatically brought to the table . Then the food... and ohh yesss! a small loaf of warm bread and a bread knife brought to the table as part of their service . The already perfectly softened butter packets set out at the table, and yes, that is worthy of a check! Then the food! We have eaten here a few times only because it used to be far from us, but now we live closer, YES! . This day, I chose the Lobster Bisque, thick, creamy and so full of flavor, how the chef got so much flavor into that soup and perfectly balanced was incredible! Best lobster bisque outside of Maine I've ever had and right up there with the one I had in Maine . For the entree I chose the Mediterranean dish with Cod fish. It's a fish dish in a sauce that not only perfectly complemented the cod but, the explosion of flavors with absolute balance was joyful! So often, I find some chefs try to improve flavor with salt, which of course is important but, is so often over the top because they can't or don't bring out the flavors naturally. I can taste the fact that this chef spends all the necessary time and work to bring out these flavors naturally by a slow and traditional process that can't be rushed, thank you Chef! My husband had the same dish but with the salmon which was also very good but to be honest, I preferred mine after trying his, but, probably just because I prefer cod over salmon. I took the last of the warm bread and soaked up the bread with that luscious, flavor-filled sauce, a perfect end to a very special treat in the north woods!! The chef stepped out briefly that evening and I got his attention and thanked him for an incredible meal and told him the bisque was as good as what we experienced in Maine and he shared that he is from New England originally. Well, now that makes sense! Thank you to the chef, restaurant manager and staff for providing us with a really special meal! Of course we'll be back!!

DO NOT STAY HERE!!! FIRST OFF, I'D LIKE TO NOTE THAT WE RENTED THE CABIN THRU "VACASA.COM"…read moreVACATION RENTALS. We also spoke to the onsite owners Missy & Wayne when we arrived at the cabin, about issues we immediately observed. The owners were sarcastic and didn't want to resolve the issues we brought to their attention. They told us to talk to the company that we had made the reservations thru. So here's our experience at The Gateway Lodge & Resort - the "HoneyMoon Cabin" rental. My husband & I rented this cabin for Labor Day weekend. Cabin was so bad we only stayed 1 night (& ONLY stayed that night cause we were too exhausted from driving all day to drive any further to find new lodging). Besides the bugs flying around in the living room/dining room space, there was mold in the bathroom, inadequate very dim lighting throughout cabin (with half the overhead lights in kitchen not working), bedding was old, worn & dirty, kitchen was inadequately stocked (when I opened the silverware drawer there were "3" forks (1 of which the prongs were bent), the only seating provided in the cabin was an old worn dirty futon (with springs poking thru) and a small dining table with 2 uncomfortable chairs), the gas fireplace did not work (even though Vacasa-the property mgmt company we rented from- advertised that there was a working fireplace). When we asked Missy & Wayne about the fireplace not working they laughed & told us that our fireplace hadn't worked in over 2 years and that they had planned to remove it but just hadn't gotten round to it. WiFI didn't work, outside dining table was dirty, the "free" to use canoes were corroded with dirt & looked as though they hadn't been cleaned in a long, long time. Moving on to what appeared to be (3) FIRE/SAFETY HAZARDS INSIDE THE CABIN. 1. PICTURE ATTACHED -In our bedroom, there was a breaker box on the wall. Beside it there was a large handful of long wires that apparently came from the outside of the cabin thru the wall and into the bedroom. They were just hanging there with a piece of tape around them. 2. VIDEO ATTACHED -In the living room-Above the fireplace-sitting on a shelf, is an ancient CD player and sound system that did not appear to work, but were plugged into the same electrical outlet that the fireplace is plugged into. (Keep in mind this gas fireplace was plugged in even though it hadn't worked in over 2 years, according to the owners). You can see there are 4 items plugged into the one wall outlet on the right side of fireplace; and 1 item plugged into the electrical outlet on the left side of fireplace, with numerous wires hanging down & stretched up & around. 3. VIDEO ATTACHED -The inside HVAC unit was not enclosed. Unit was installed inside the bathroom on left hand side (you can see the curtain hanging in front of it in the video). Instead of it being installed with proper enclosure as required by Wisconsin code, It was installed in the bathroom with no enclosure - only a full length curtain to hide it from sight. My husband & I immediately requested a full refund the same night we arrived at the cabin, and are still being given the run around by Vacasa.com property management. I am now pursuing thru the assistance of the WI Dept of Agriculture/Trade & Consumer Protection Bureau!!!!
