We had takeout from this restaurant twice the past couple of weeks. My husband enjoyed the General Tao's chicken both times. He had ordered me a noodle dish that was supposed to be with all the meats but when I got it, it was vegetarian. He thinks he had ordered wrong. The second time he asked over the phone if they had a Happy Family with noodles and they said only with rice so I had that. It was ok but I still prefer the noodle dishes. He picked up a paper menu the second time so now we have something to look at as we couldn't find much for menu online. Both times we have asked for spicy for our dishes but we had to add our own spice to the dishes. That may be because we are use to eating Thai food. Next time we will order very spicy and see what we get. My husband did not feel like they were very friendly when he picked the orders up, nor were they very helpful over the phone. But, they are only a mile away from where we just moved to and the food is decent enough to warrant us coming back, unless the area gets a full time Thai restaurant. read more

While waiting for lunch we had to entertain 4 year old child of waitress who demanded that we read a story, we were only customers, mother ignored child entire time we were there. Paid for meal, asked waitress for change for 5$ bill, waitress took bill and placed bill in tip jar...hmmm, also, customer came in for take out meal, bags were brought out, customer took all bags and left, shortly afterwards another customer came in and asked for his take out order, seems that previous customer accidentally took the wrong order along with his...waitress went back to kitchen and it sounded like world war 3 had started with whoever was back there...blaming old man for taking the food...like I said, food was ok, being entertained like this was priceless. I ordered vegetable egg foo young, it was mush. You could not discern any type of ingredient, just totally inedible! The egg roll was not bad which is how they even got 1 star. Look at this shrimp tempura, I assume there is a shrimp in there buried by the thickest softest breading I ever ate. Disgusting food. I need to add that on top of the egg foo young was a mixture of mushy vegetables which I've never seen in the many years of ordering this at other places. The rice was not sticky rice but fell apart leading me to believe it was some kind of instant white rice. Also the restaurant when you go in smells like sewage. I felt sorry for the one table of people eating there. I can't stress enough how awful the food was. I had to throw it all away. $26 down the toilet. read more

If you are looking for a quiet place to have a good but not great dinner, this might be the place for you. We went on a Saturday at lunch time and we were the only folks in the place. They did seem to have good take out traffic. Food was good but not great. Both the egg drop and hot and sour soups were tasty and hot. Egg rolls were crisp but nothing special. Our entrees were good portioned but again no flavors that made the food stand out, but nothing bad. We were hoping for better, but with that said we will probably give them another try. read more

Hunan Restaurant a typical, small town Chinese restaurant, not unlike thousands of such places across the country. That said -- within the genre -- their food is as tasty and as well prepared as any of the similar restaurants I have eaten at over the last 50 years. It won't blow you away, but it won't disappoint you either. Now normally I would give an establishment like Hunan three stars (which for me means everything was fine) but during this time of COVID I am giving five star reviews in support of restaurants and other establishments that are observing safe practices for the health and well being of their customers. (Conversely, places that have ignored safe practices now automatically get one star in my reviews.) Hunan merits five stars for taking the pandemic seriously and following all the recommended safe practices for our region. On to the food: For our most recent visit we ordered take out (the dining room was still closed due to COVID). It was ready when promised. The portions were more than ample for the price. The steamed dumplings were standard fare but I liked them a lot. The hot and sour soup was a tad thicker than I like (too much starch) and a bit lacking on the hot side. The house special Lo Mein was well seasoned with plenty of proteins. The chicken Kung Pao had a nice amount of heat -- something that is usually lacking in American versions of Kung Pao. Hopefully someday Chinese restaurants in America will prepared this dish with the same "ma-la" (simultaneously spicy hot and numbing) as one finds in the food of Chengdu, Szechuan, China. Until then Hunan's Kung Pao will do. read more

Finished trying to convince myself this is good any longer. Greasy spring rolls. Wonton soup with wonton so tough a spoon would cut not to mention flavorless broth. Odd unwelcoming service details which I hesitate to describe but let's say it wouldn't pass any food service inspection rules. My entree was supposed to be Mongolian chicken. I've had this many many times and this was not properly prepared from the chicken to the missing ingredients. I even googled it on the spot (just looked at it myself) and I was right! It's like assembled vs cooked food. Chicken slices add a thick brown sauce some canned mushrooms (don't belong) toss it and pass it off. Very disappointed - the server rolled his eyes when he brought our canned soda and we asked for a glass of ice. He also never came to our table to check if everything was OK. We had the Flaming Dynasty for two. The crab rangoon was not sweet, the fried wonton was overcooked and very tough to eat, and all the deep fried foods were very greasy. I had the egg drop soup and there was no flavor to it - I added salt and it helped. The paper wrapped chicken was wrapped in foil, but the chicken was very tender and good. I have eaten at many Hunan restaurants before which were very good, but this experience was the worst. Not sure if I will come back to this restaurant again. read more

This is a cute place in the Northwoods. They have a large menu and the food is great! I cannot eat soy sauce or flour and they were able to accommodate me with a delicious veggie dish. The tea is really good too! We cannot wait to go back . Nice service as well. read more

I love Hunan's. I've loved it most of my life. I live in Chicago now and it's a funny funny world when Hunan in good ol' Woodruff is better than most the restaurants we frequent in Chinatown. They have the best dumplings in the world. Yes, seriously in the world - ok, maybe not the world - but the best in the Great Lakes area at the very least. In the 15+ years I've been dining at Hunan I've never had a bad meal. Never. It's been through several ownership changes over the years, yet it remains it's yummy, smoothly run self! There is no hyperbole in the following statement: Hunans of Mincoqua, WI is the greatest Chinese restaurant I have ever been to. Let's put it like this: my choice for a last meal would be the wonton soup, fried dumplings (more on the dumplings to follow), and Schezwan shrimp. And, hey, how 'bout some cashew chicken on the side? Oh the dumplings....my god the dumplings! If there is one universal truth in this world it is that everyone agrees that the fried dumplings are the most delectable satchels of pork in the land. They are a necessity. If you do not order them you are missing out on the best thing on the menu. As a side note, if you go between 11-3pm, the lunch menu items are ridiculousness cheap and heaping. Egg roll, soup, and a (large) entree will cost you $5.95 to $6.50. Having recently moved closer to Chicago, one would think I would have stumbled upon a superior Chinese eatery than one in Podunk Wisconsin. Alas, I have not. I was a bit surprised at the bug reviews as I have never seen any health issue here at all. I lived in NYC for over 30 years and have had food from many Chinese restaurants there, including in China Town. Hunan ranks pretty much on a par with the typical sit-down restaurant in Manhattan. Fresh, nicely spiced (a little surprising in the north woods), hot and lots of it. I recommend the lunch specials, which include soup, spring roll, choice of rice and a large portion of entree. *WARNING* This is the absolute last time I will ever go to Hunans. I went with a group of friends, and got dinner, ordered chicken and seafood, 2 plates. Found a bug in the sea food plate. The lady looked at it and said "yuck, sorry" and then brought me out a new plate. Completely disgusted out. Out of curiosity started looking through the plate of chicken, and found another bug. The lady goes, "oh sorry". We politely asked for our check, and they made us pay for everything. The lady sat there and yelled at us to take the food home in boxes when we told her we were not eating the food anymore. She kept saying "no new plate, you pay" so we paid and walked out. Not trying to run anyone out of business, but I have seen Facebook posts about it and figured I would give them the benefit of the doubt. Officially seen it with my own eyes. The serving sizes are very good. But if you're new to Chinese food do some research about what items they serve as they have no photos and you'll spend ages asking "Whats that?." The items on the table are what you'd find at Ace Hardware's Dollar Store, which gives it a very tacky look. But the food is a solid 4 stars. Honestly, if they improved the interior or moved to another place or even had a buffet option I would go. They seem a bit better than some Chinese places around the area. The Good and the Bad: 1. No buffet (Which kind of stinks) so know what you're going to order. 2. Atmosphere is nice and quiet. 3. Utensils and things on the table are tacky. 4.
