Went here for lunch on a Monday while on a road trip. First tip, they are cash only. While my friend went to the BP next door to grab cash, I got a table. The waitress was super accommodating because we had a child with. Right away, she asked if we would like crayons or cars. The toy cars were a huge hit for the child and kept him entertained the whole time. It was a great thing since the restaurant was pretty full. As for food, it was standard diner food, just what I wanted. I got the veggie omelet, which was pretty good. It was a very thin egg layer and filled with veggies. I think the mushrooms were canned, but they didn't necessarily taste like it. The rye toast was also tasty. My friend got the beast burger, which we thought was super interesting to have that combo of meats on the menu. It did need some condiments as the combo of lean meats made it a little dry, but it had a good flavor. We also got the 9er, which was just the right amount of food for a child. No water due to them cleaning the water pipes. The cheese curds were not to bad not amazing but they were ok. The hash browns were pretty good. The service was less than welcoming but nothing to make us want to leave. Good parking. Small town restaurant. We might give them another shot when we come back to that area of town. read more

This diner is an absolute pleasure to dine at. From the moment you walk in the door, you can't help but notice that it's impeccably clean. The hardwood floors are spotless and shiny, and you can tell they care for the place. It has a very comfortable, quaint country atmosphere. We had breakfast here yesterday morning, and couldn't wait to come back this morning before leaving town. The prices are so reasonable, there were 5 adults in our party yesterday, and we all ordered full breakfasts with some extras, and the total was just over $60. For the love of God, don't order the biscuits and gravy. However I will say that my daughter ordered a Belgian waffle, and that was delicious. I'm happy she shared it with me after finding out how bland the biscuits and gravy was. read more

Worst breakfast of all time. Maybe I hit them at a bad time as it was average or slightly in prior years, but this visit the food was so poorly prepared I gave up trying to eat it after a few forkfuls. Ordered a cheese omelet and hash browns. The omelet was amazingly thin. I can't imagine how the cook did it. When I make one it's fluffy and at least twice as thick than this insult to eggs everywhere. It was also shiny; water? grease? some horrible human residue? Darn if I know. Now for the "hash browns": a huge portion of them and tender. But I think they boiled grated spuds, threw them on the grill for 10 or 20 seconds to give them the slightest bit of golden brown on the top and left white shreds underneath. This is first negative review I've ever given ("If you can't say something nice don't say anything at all", one of my mother's many old trite sayings), but it is well deserved. read more

I used to really like this cafe for breakfast , but things have gone downhill. The hash browns were the attraction, but the last two times they were undercooked and raw. Seems like they don't want to take the time to get it right. Just some caution, they don't wear masks and don't spread out seating. As a matter of fact they closed half of their dining area forcing you to sit closer than necessary. If they don't care about me, I don't care about them. I'm not returning. My family has frequented this establishment for years when we come up here on vacation. My most recent visit was this summer when I stopped in to get a bite to eat for lunch. I ordered the roast beef plate and received two shriveled up pieces of roast that were as dry as an eraser. I told the waitress that I did not like the roast beef and asked if I could order something else INSTEAD, she responded with a "yes". I told the waitress what I wanted and she cleared away the plate of roast beef. She then brought out the chicken sandwich which I had ordered as the replacement. As I was finishing the chicken sandwich the waitress dropped the check off at the table and then derogatorily, with a smirk on her face asked "Is there anything wrong?" At her prompting I looked down at the check and saw that they had charged me for BOTH the roast beef plate AND the chicken sandwich.... I could feel my blood pressure raising and I was getting lightheaded and beginning to see stars, afraid to get angry I politely replied "You charged me for both the roast beef and the chicken sandwich." The waitress then happily said "you can talk to the manager." The manager, which conveniently happened to be standing right behind her came in right on queue, loudly asking "WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?!?". I inquired calmly as to why I was charged for BOTH the roast beef plate and the chicken sandwich. The manager then rudely informed me that there was nothing wrong with that roast beef and that I indeed would have to pay for both and the only reason that the roast beef was dry was because I did not have any gravy.... Rude and stingy management with bad business practices will not win out in the end, the customer is always right. This is the most displeasurable restaurant experience I have ever had. read more

Friday morning breakfast and the restaurant wasn't full. However service and wait time was quite poor. Hash browns were still partially frozen, chicken fried steak was terrible, toast was either burned or not warm enough to melt butter. Visiting friends in Mercer for years and have been told to avoid this cafe. Food is OK but very, very, very slow. After another 1 hour + wait for a breakfast for 2 people with the seats 1/2 full, I will never go back or recommend to anyone else. Save yourself the aggravation and drive to Boulder Junction or elsewhere. You'll have a better meal and save yourself some time. If it wasn't for the one time tourists, it would close. If you are looking for a great breakfast food spot in the Northwoods...this is the place! But don't come expecting pleasant service and quick turn around for your food. The waitress didn't look happy to be there and was very short with us about everything. We didn't get our food for 45 minutes and there was maybe 4 tables eating already and 3 there before us waiting for their food. We even got our food prior to a table that was there before us. A nice little diner in the heart of Mercer Wisconsin. In reality, it is quite literally the only place in town to get a breakfast. Unless you add the local Subway. There are no other diners to go to. Fortunately, for the most part, Toms Cafe is a good restaurant. Breakfast items include all the traditional standby's (eggs, coffee (iffy) toast, omelets, bacon, hash browns, french toast, skillet dishes, and on and on). Great bacon by the way...nice and meaty. Excellent hash browns. A favorite of my boys are the breakfast quesadillas. Lunch is comprised of traditional fare as well...including specials of the day (i.e. meat loaf and mashed potatoes.) On the downside, because it's the only game in town, Tom's Cafe can get quite busy, especially with the breakfast crowd. Here's where service is hit and miss. Orders can get mixed up, arrive late, or not at all. People who order after you can often get served before you...quite irritating. I'd say you have about a 20% chance that there will be a screw-up with your order if you arrive at the morning breakfast peak. Maybe even 25%. Nothing to be proud of. Never-the-less, if you find yourself or family in town for breakfast don't hesitate to give Tom's a try. Free wi-fi is also available and prices are reasonable, unless your one of the one's whose order got screwed up. Then you might feel differently. read more

Who doesn't love a good ole American breakfast? Also, our family rolled up fifteen minutes before they closed (they were still quite busy) and they happily served us and didn't try to rush us at all. The French toast is amazing and the service is good. In the winter there was even a warm tunnel leading to the front door so customers could stay covered. The only thing that could really make this place better is if they heated up their syrup (which I know, hardly any cafes do). read more
