After an annoying day getting my driver's license renewed at the nearby DMV, I stumbled in right as they were opening. The location is a bit far from campus, which is nice if you're trying to avoid the crowd. There were lots of outdoor area for seating, beer on tap (of course), and hot dogs for sale. I would skip on the hot dogs as they were a bit pricey, and weren't very good. Even so, the 4 star rating is about the beer. I had a People's Pilsner (nice and crispy as described) and a hazy IPA. We were very excited to try the new restaurant! It's gorgeous inside and way bigger than what I had expected. We order two cocktails. I got their cucumber gin drink. It was refreshing. My wife got their little red corvette drink. She liked it. We shared the fry sampler which was delicious. I love their ranch and the Pilsner aioli. My wife got the salmon and I had the Caesar salad. She loved the salmon. The basmati rice with the corn was really good. Her only suggestion would be more pineapple salsa! My salad was good. It was well dressed and I liked the chickpeas. My only qualm was the dressing was lacking in flavor. It needed more salt and maybe some lemon. I like a Caesar dressing with some punch and theirs was lacking. Our favorite part was the s'mores mousse. It was so good. The mousse was not overly sweet and paired well with their marshmallow topping. The crunch of the graham cracker was perfect. We loved it! One of the best desserts I've had in awhile. Service was great. My suggestion would be maybe some more vegetarian items. Or maybe better ones. It's definitely a meat heavy menu and it feels like the vegetarian dishes were looked over. We've all seen a quinoa bowl and a black bean patty. Also $2 extra for a black bean patty? Had the worst bar service I've ever experienced. We got there when the bar had a total of 6 people sitting at it. The bartenders were frequently outside of the bar area talking among themselves or with the servers. When they were behind the bar, they avoided eye contact and never asked if I needed help. Ordered 4 drinks over about 4 hours, and every single time I did it was by me asking multiple times if I could get a drink. Ordered a sandwich, had to go out of my way to ask for ketchup, which promptly exploded all over the place, including my clothes when it opened. Bartender saw it, asked if there was a problem with the ketchup, and when I explained what happened he just gave me a new bottle and some wet wipes. Didn't apologize for the inconvenience or my stained clothes. I've been to sudwerk multiple times. This will be the last time. If you aren't a regular there, you will be treated horribly. read more

My boyfriend and I were in the Davis area and decided to check out Sudwerk for the first time because of a recommendation from a family member. Vibe seemed pretty cool walking through the doors until we sat down at the bar. We sat down and scanned the QR code to order since we were just following the signs to order inside at the bar. Sadly, no one acknowledged us (even though it didn't seem busy at the bar). As we were looking at the menu on our phones, others began to just walk up and/or sit at the bar to order, whether they had an open tab or not. All of these people were acknowledged almost immediately by one of the two bartenders working even though we had been sitting there for a while already. At this point, we didn't know if we should have ordered via QR code or via face-to-face with a bartender. We started to feel not welcome either. Eventually, the other bartender randomly gave us some physical menus, without us asking, and we ordered from him. He was a little more friendly towards us, which was a plus. In the end, beer was good. Consumed was an IPA flight and the Marzen. Would we return? Maybe not. If customer service improved, MAYBE we would. Side note: live music was a plus! read more

The used to have a really uncomfortable couch in a side room next to the bar. The back had a weird angle and it was made from old scrap wood. The used bags of cement for cushions. It was the worst couch ever! I used to sit on it and pretend I was Fred Flintstone. Cause his furniture is made from rocks. They wisely moved it outside to the smoking section. When I heard Sudwerk implemented the QR code system, I figured I should give them another chance. It was much better! The experience was more relaxing this time around. We could choose our own seat, ordered at our own convenience, and could get a second round without having to flag down the waitstaff. That said, the food was just ok. Food was solid 4 stars but service and drinks made it a 5. We came here on a Saturday early afternoon during our kids soccer tournament. Not only did they let us use the restrooms before opening but they set us a table with waters etc and let us sit and start checking the menu-- a table for 16 mind you-- before they were officially open. Our server Lupita was friendly, helpful, and got EVERY order correct. Kids loved playing outside on the patio while we waited for food. I am so freakin excited that Sudwerk is serving food again and has opened up the Beer Hall! The new food is solid -- the shishitos were so good with the bonito flakes, will 100% be ordering that again soon. Aggie Fries were pretty good too. Love that they gave us some veggie snacks for the kiddos. Beer is always always good. The Dock is a great local place to gather and I'm so happy we have the Beer Hall (with huge TV screen) as an indoor option. I want to rave about Sudwerk's reno/redo, as I've been coming here for two decades. But I can't. It just doesn't feel friendly. It's cold and sterile. I am so sick of the gray, metal, stained-concrete, uncomfortable-and-sterile industrial vibe that many restaurants and breweries have gone with. It's cheap, which I get, but Sudwerk already had $$$ unique old wooden deep booths/ benches and paneling in place to complement the rad copper brew machinery in the middle of the floor. The tables and chairs in there now feel like Chipotle "let's get ''em in and out quick!" There is no real ambience, differentiator/sense of place. Beer and bar selection and food were pretty good, but I can get their fare pretty much anywhere. The patio Adirondack chairs are comfy, and the shade sails work and are probably much less a pain than the old trees... but I miss trees out there. Again, an efficiency-and-$ decision. I live nearby, so I will keep trying them out, and I have such great old memories from Sudwerk of old. Bull n Mouth/deVere's CRUSHES ambience. I bet a little of that restaurant rizz could be slathered over the greige and metal that dominates this latest Sudwerk iteration. read more

The food in this new version of Sudwerks is a far sad cry from what it used to be. To start with, both my french dip and the french fries were medium warm to cold (how can you serve cold fries?), the meat in the french dip was very fatty and tough, and both items were very tasteless. To top it off, we were at a table next to the windows which were full of flies that would come to both our table, and the next one. They were using the menu to swat the flies. We told our waitperson-twice- that something needed to be done (maybe a flyswatter could be used?), and she blew us off "oh, they're (management?) trying to figure out what to do". The beer is great as always and the remodel is very nice, but the food is extremely mediocre for how much they are charging. $20 for just a cheeseburger when a Burgers&Brew is right down the street cheaper and better. Pretty much every item on their menu can be found cheaper and better throughout Davis. The $15 for a pretzel is absolutely absurd. They need to decide whether they are going to offer cheap mediocre bar food (which would be fine given the ambience and beer) or fancier more expensive eats. I tried not to let their rude employees( I.e a man with a beard and a hat with a red flannel and many more) ruined the experience but honestly the beer wasn't as enjoyable as it should have. When my friends and I came into the store. The two workers at the front didn't greet us and only looked at us like we were troubling them. We ended up having to initiate them to tell them we wanted some beers and food. On top of that the waiter that gave my group and I our food. It was our first visit since the remodel! We sat inside and loved our time! The shishito peppers were fantastic and I nearly hogged the entire bowl to myself! I also had the watermelon salad. Watermelon was very sweet and the goat cheese and pistachios were a delightful addition! My family really enjoyed the fried chicken sandwich, cheeseburger and special rib sandwich. Service was very good! I enjoyed two glasses of Cabernet in a cute clean glass. The reason for not giving 5 stars is the fries were a bit salty for my son (although my husband loved them) and the chicken sandwich tasted a little fishy (maybe change the oil?). A pleasant surprise for Davis. Had not been very happy with the selection in downtown Davis, so had to resort driving a little bit further to enjoy the Sacramento flavors. This place which is just 5 min away from downtown Davis is just perfect for families as they have a great outdoor place where you will not have to worry about your kids running around screaming.
