Sue's Kitchen is a gem. The food is delicious, and through samplings of meals of guests I have brought, I have never been disappointed.

Make sure you don't bring your lowered souped up drive up this steep ass hill- bring your SUV if you can- seriously... ya gonna scrape ya car. With all that said- man this place is SO GOOD. Its hard to please my parents but they liked it too. The portions they give are LARGE for a thai place and they're the same price. Everything is good here- we always get the papaya salad but get he crunchy rice one with pork and lettuce wrap because that's my 2nd favorite! Tom Ka Gai and Tom Yum are flavorful, the pad thai or pad see ew is yummy, all the curries are really good. Whenever we come here we end up ordering a lot of food because it sounds so good and you always have left overs. We frequent here a lot and for the most part it's always full- when we decide to go here it's usually for lunch or an EARLY dinner to beat the crowd. Used to love this place. And I still like some of their items. Mmmm the nam kao, so good, rice stays crunchy, even when leftover! And also I count on the kao piak (substitute the handmade noodle for the regular pho noodles) for when me or one of the kids is sick. Here's the deal, I am in search of Lao food. And when I can't eat it from someone's mama's kitchen, then I am hoping to find some yummy replication at a restaurant, and fortunately or unfortunately it is normally paired with Thai food since it is the lesser known of these two types of food. Lao food is spicer, less sweet and has a ga-jillion flavors - mostly spicy and pungent going on. Sue's can run sweet on the sauces and don't get me wrong, they are yummy. It's just my palette is seeking the Lao side of things. Please -- by all means, go and try it. Try the nam kao, the pad see eww, the kao piak and even the kao soy (also used to be my go-to when not sick). If you want Lao food, maybe keep it movin. read more

Sometimes I crave chocolate, other times I crave nam kao!! The best nam kao I've ever had was at Sue's! Cruncy little pieces of rice, chunks of meat, citrusy lime goodness, flavorful cilantro, cool crunch from the lettuce, omg. If you've never had it, try it! You'll crave it like I do! After Scanning the menu, I ordered two favorites of mine: khao soi, and nam khao). Shockingly they got it wrong. In so many ways. Khao soi - I've made this myself. From scratch. It's perfect comfort food on a cold day. So good. But not this time. I asked for thai hot. It's barely mild. No coconut milk. No flavor. Barely any turmeric. This restaurant says it makes it own stuff from scratch? I've made my own and it was way better. I am worried this is some pho ga (chicken pho) broth posing as khao soi with noodles and meatballs. Def won't be getting this again. I tried adding the pickled chilies, then the little bird chilies. I added sriracha. I was desperate because I love khao soi. I even added the chili flakes with oil. No dice. It was like there was a couple missing links in the chain. I would say coconut milk, turmeric, maybe coriander or even shallots. The broth was so mild it was like taking a bath in half warm water. The crispy rice dish (Nam Kao) however was good but not thai hot. But when I asked for more lettuce they wanted to charge me $2. What??? Bit the bullet and literally ate it. So tbh just below average overall. I was sad cause this place appears highly reviewed. When the server came to take the check, I asked are you sure this is khao soi, thinking maybe they had mixed up the order she looked at me like I was crazy and said yes. Have gone here twice and ordered online once. I like it! Its a normal breakfast/lunch type diner. It seems to always be crowded and busy but we still got our food at a decent time. Even though it is so busy, the waiters/waitresses are always nice and attentive. The prices are really good too! read more

Great service, no ambiance, too much sugar in the dishes we ate. We had the pumpkin chicken dish and the crab rice. You could not find the crab in the crab rice dish we had. I was really looking forward to eating at Sue's Kitchen especially after seeing them on Check Please. I was greatly disappointed with the taste of sugar in our dishes. I would not recommend this place to a diabetic person. The location of the restaurant was great for us, we live in the area. read more

Tried the kao soy for the first time. Such a good portion size. Soup was very flavorful. The right kind of spicy too. You can always add sirach sauce to increase the spicy level. I like that they let you order ahead of time so by the time you get there the food is ready. I don't live in the area anymore but when I am I try to stop by to get takeout. First the food is tasty and delicious. However since COVID I've noticed that the prices have increased (to be expected due to inflation etc) but the portion sizes have become smaller. I bought the seafood fried rice very little seafood in the dish. Not as much as in the past. I also bought the pad krapow seafood. This was where I noticed a starling difference in the seafood in the dish. Very few pieces of shrimp or calamari. Very disappointing since I don't live in the area and it used to be a treat. Damn, I wish Sue's kitchen was closer to us. I really liked their food here! We went here twice in a week when we were house sitting! LOL! Here are some of the things we ordered: Payaya Salad Pad Thai Kao Piak Nam Khao Green Curry Everything was so good and flavorful! Service was pretty quick and it moved along even with a line. It was clean and the prices are very affordable. I do want to warn you about driving here though, you have to go up this crazy driveway, so if your car is low.. go slow and sideways or else..scrape scrape scrape! lol We will definitely drop by here if we are in the area! read more

You can't go wrong with anything you order at Sue's Kitchen! We have been going to Sue's since it's opening and absolutely love it! They have many vegetarian and pescatarian dishes and will always happily fry the tofu for any dishes on the menu. I have selfishly refrained from reviewing Sue's Kitchen, as I wanted to keep their greatness a secret. However, the word got out and business is always booming. So get there when the doors open or prepare to wait for a table, or order takeout. Sadly, we have recently moved and will miss going to our favorite restaurant! We have yet to find anything as authentic or comparable as Sue's Kitchen and plan to visit them whenever we are in the area! This is truly a special place with incredible chef's and staff! read more

Drive all the way up a steep parking lot will be sues kitchen. This place was busy on a weekday night. Already I can tell it'll be good. Our family came in n ordered different dishes. All had its own flavor and were delicious. My favorite has to be the Kao poon. It's sweet creamy coconut curry soup is so flavorful! For a lighter flavor I would get kao piak. I was excited to try this place after hearing about it from a friend. I went around 7 pm and this place was hard to find in the dark. The restaurant is up a steep hill in a tiny plaza way tucked in the back. There is no light in the parking lot aside from the lights from the restaurant and other surrounding stores. BEWARE... The parking lot is slanted on a steep hill! There was no parking in front of the restaurant, so we had to park slanted with our brake on like many other cars. I have been looking for a place that sold Ka Soy around the area. I found out that they had it here and of course I had to order it! My friends ended up ordering Kao Poon, beef pho, Kao Piak, pad kee Mao, fried egg rolls, and Thai tea. To start off, the Kao Soy was good, but nothing mind blowing. It tasted like a sour bun bo hue. The Kao Poon was rich in flavor and definitely good for those that like rich and creamy soups. The Kao Piak came with homemade chewy clear noodles. It looks quite plain, but the broth is seasoned well. The fried egg rolls were common, but the sauce was good (it had crunchy garlic imbedded in the sweet and sour sauce). The Thai tea was also good, definitely on the sweeter side. The pad kee Mao came out spicer that expected. If you are someone who can't take spicy, I would recommend asking them to make it less spicy. What I would recommend out of everything we got is the beef pho which was rich in flavor. We are also able to change the type of noodles from vermicelli to ho fun (thick flat noodles). The ambience of the place is nice for friends and family. The service was good and the food came in a timely manner. They packed the left over food for us, which may sound typical...but a lot of restaurants these days just give containers to the customers to pack themselves. First visit today. Beating myself up for only now trying this place after having had it bookmarked for a couple of years. Ordered the tom khai gai (made it spicy) and yum woon sen salad with bean-thread noodles, prawns, minced chicken, peanuts and iceberg lettuce. Everything was delicious. Flavors and textures very nicely balanced, and ingredients noticeably fresh. Based on these two dishes alone I get the impression that the quality of food is high. Friendly staff and good service. Great nam kao dish! I grabbed my favorite appetizer to go here one afternoon. The meat to rice ratio was great, and there was a nice crisp exterior to the deep fried parts. The veggies for the wrap were fresh and the lime juice squeezed on top added a perfect brightening note. I wish I had gotten more cilantro in my veggies but that could be avoided next time by eating in, or checking the contents before leaving with the take out. The location is in a strip mall with a steep entrance and limited parking, but I would return again for more next time I'm nearby. read more

I stumpled upon this hidden gem when I was visiting a friend in the area. And now, Everytime I drive to the bay area. I make sure I stop by to eat there! My favorites are Nam Khao, egg rolls (yes I said it, the fillings are different than your typical cabbage, carrots, vermicelli noodles filling). Something special about it Also Kao Piek was good. Drunken noodles and pad Thai are not bad, it's the kids "go to" dishes. But for sure Nam Khao is the best here! My new go to Thai Restaurant. Although my favorite dish here actually is Lao in origin. If you come here do not leave without trying the Nam Kao (Lettuce wraps with sour pork and crispy rice! The Pad Thai is one of the better Pad Thais that we have had. The green Papaya Saladis nice and tangy and hot even when we ordered a two on a scale of one to five. Generous portions at reasonable prices. Difficult location in a strip mall at the top of the hill. Well with the trip into El Sobrante. We will be back! read more

A hidden gem in El Sobrante! This place was bustling 30 minutes before closing on Saturday, which is always a good sign. The menu features all the usual suspects for a Thai restaurant. The wide variation can often be overwhelming, but I felt like Sue's Kitchen pared down the options to a manageable 2-3 page menu. I ordered the Massamun Curry, a sweet curry somewhere between a red and a yellow. It was very flavorful and loaded with potatoes and peanuts, which is a plus in my book! My friends both got Pad Makeur and promptly finished it off - another good sign! Service was great. Waiter promptly took our order when we sat down and was attentive to our water cups. Parking was interesting... The restaurant is located on a hill and you have to park perpendicular to the curb, so you almost feel like you're parking in San Fransisco! A word to the wise - drive slowly going down the hill to avoid scratching the underside of your car like I did :P Overall, this is a solid Thai restaurant in an area that's dominated by chain restaurants. Good: - Tod Mun Pla, Thai fish cakes. - Nam Kao: Deep fried rice ball salad - Nuer Num Thoke: Grilled beef slices salad - Som Tum: Shredded green papaya salad - Fried Banana with coconut-pineapple ice cream. Ice cream is supermarket/average quality but okay. Very good: - Seafood panang, yellow curry. Flavorful and unlike many nowadays, NOT sugared - Thai fried rice with fried chicken. Signature dish: standard fried rice ringed with crispy chicken wings. The rice is good, lightly battered chicken wings very good. I'd get them separately if possible; but we didn't see any option on the menu for it. This is a locals-focused, good value restaurant not trying to be upscale or fusion. It's good, tasty, moderately priced food for those nearby. If we were in the area we would stop in again, but this is not a destination restaurant per se. read more

We ordered Green Curry and Red Curry to go. When we came home, we opened that bag with food and i saw that HOT liquids from Curry were in CHEAP PLASTIC BAG. I was so surprised and shocked !!! I thought everyone supposes to know that you can't put hot liquid in that kind of plastic bag , that's bad for your health !!! That was my big concern about this place . The closest I've come to having homemade tasting kao soy homemade in a restaurant. We started off with the eggrolls. They're typical eggrolls that are filled with pork, silver noodles, and mushrooms and served with a sweet chili sauce topped off with peanuts. The bf was disappointed that it didn't come with a lettuce to wrap your eggrolls. I've had Sue's Kitchen bookmarked for the kao soy ($7.95). Their kao soy is extremely comforting and a must try. The soup was flavorful and had a nice, clean taste to it. The noodles are flat rice noodles (ho fun) and topped off with ground pork, meatballs, and cilantro. The only let down to the dish was their noodles. They were a bit hard and needed to be boiled more. It didn't soften up in the broth. Service was busy so it took a little longer to get things. We arrived at dinner time on the weekend and waited about 20 minutes until the two of us were seated.
