Sugar Beach Hotel was the perfect spot for our stay in Traverse City. Located directly on the East Bay, the views are amazing and you are steps from the shoreline. Located about 10 mins from downtown on Munson. The pool and jacuzzi was spacious, and just the right temperature. There was an impressive arcade area for the kids, and a mini gym. We were here in the off season, so it was chill, but I definitely see this place being fun for the entire family in the peak season. We had an amazing balcony room. Everything was clean & the staff was friendly. We will definitely stay again! read more

I want to offer a great review of this hotel! My wife and I have had to drive 100 plus miles down from the real Northern Michigan twice in the past two weeks for medical treatment - biopsies and pet scans at Munson for stage 4 prostate cancer. Obviously, we were very concerned and nervous. This hotel was wonderful, and made our trip much less stressful. The accommodations were spacious and clean and well-furnished. But, as good as the hotel and rooms were - we had different rooms each time - the staff was FANTASTIC! Since I needed to be at the hospital at 6:00 AM, they delivered well-packed boxes with delicious breakfast items to our room at 4:00 AM. When we checked in, we were asked to pick our breakfast selections from five options. The packets of food were left outside our room before we even awoke. When the refrigerator in our room malfunctioned, they replaced it within 30 minutes. When we needed additional towels, they were delivered immediately. Unfortunately, I did not get names for the staff that brought the items we needed, but I did get the names of the people that were at the front desk, I would like to give a very big thumbs-up to both Anthony - who checked us in both times - and to Sky - who helped us extend our room by one day when we called the front desk at 5:00 AM. Originally, we planned to drive home today, but realizing that I might not be up for the drive back after hours of tests, we decided to rest up one more day. We would like to give the hotel and its accommodations a "10" on a scale of 10, but - following the example of "This Is Spinal Tap" - we want to give the staff an "11"! Needless to say, but I will anyway, this hotel is now our go-to for any further visits to Munson in TC. I promise that you will definitely not be disappointed with your stay here as well! read more

I would never stay at Sugar Beach again. I used to come for many years with my family and we loved it, so I'm sad to say in 2024 they have gone way downhill. Sure, the beach is nice but they've moved and expanded their watersport rental business that ruins the view and experience. Good luck if you have a first floor room on that side - people will be walking across your patio all day every day because that's the pathway to the dock. But that's just an inconvenience compared to the room problems - we paid a lot for a family suite only to find it wasn't kept up, and the ancient air conditioner was missing a remote, so the temperature was very uncomfortable. When maintenance was called to look at it, he agreed it was missing the remote (but they didn't have another one) and the a/c "wasn't doing much". Then they suggested we go to Walmart and buy a fan for our room. They have not gone back to the pre-covid hot breakfast but instead drop off a package of low quality food at your door in the morning. Unless requested, housekeeping only comes to clean your room every 3 days. Upon checkout no one asked how our stay was and when I notified them of our experience, there was no acknowledgement of accountability or even an apology, just a "thanks for telling us". As a guest, I did not feel the hotel or the staff really cared that much. Since we like the beach on east grand traverse bay, luckily there are plenty of other hotels on that stretch we will stay at in the future and I highly recommend you do the same and avoid sugar beach. read more

Started off ok. After 2 days I called the front desk to see why they hadn't cleaned the room, Gave new towels or emptied the trash. (This was before I saw a little sign on the mirror saying it needed to be requested.). They told me it was scheduled to be cleaned the next day. I asked 3 times why no one had cleaned it and he didn't say anything. I asked them to make sure it was cleaned tomorrow because of the towels, trash etc. Next day after we returned to our room at about 5pm. No one had cleaned or did anything to the room. When I went to the front desk and asked why it wasn't cleaned or anything they said I had to request it. So basically they blamed me. After I explained everything I told them it needed to be cleaned. After talking to a Supervisor it was cleaned. That tight from 9pm until about 11 there were teenage to 20 something year olds yelling in the halls, slamming doors and making it impossible to sleep. Other guests and us asked them to quiet down so we could sleep. They did not. We called the front desk and they said they would warm them but we never heard them say anything to them. This along with the spider webs in the ceiling corner by the bed, the rust on the metal around the bathroom because the shower "pan" was leaking along with water damage around the shower caused us to not want to stay for the last night we had booked. We will never stay here again nor will other family members who are going to Traverse City in April. read more

When you spend the extra money to stay at a beach resort on the beach, there is a level of expectation that this establishment never came close to meeting. First impressions are important. The front desk staff, while competent, all seemed a bit bored with the whole thing. None of them smiled. None of them greeted you. They just asked for my name when I came to the front desk. While parking was easy and close, none of the doors to any of the buildings opened automatically so it was a bit of a struggle getting the luggage inside. The room on the third floor where I stayed, 310, had a lovely view of the lake, and I enjoyed both sunrises and sunsets from the balcony. For the amount of money I paid for the room, I was expecting furniture on the balcony that would reflect the Beach Resort price and description from the hotel. It was plastic. Plastic chairs, plastic table. The balcony itself needs to be cleaned more often. There were spiderwebs and dirt in the nooks and crannies. Later I understood why. When I woke up the first morning I had a swarm of midges on the ceiling near the sliding glass door. There were also some in the bathroom sink. I don't know where they came from because I kept the sliding glass door closed all night. I contacted the front desk who said they would send someone short After an hour waiting for housekeeping staff to come and vacuum them up, a gentleman arrived, who didn't know what they were, and wasn't really interested in vacuuming up more than the spotI pointed out on the ceiling. The room itself wasn't even as well maintained as the low budget Hilton brand hotel. I stayed in the previous night. The sofa bed was old and not supportive. I did sleep well in the bed, and it had a lot of great pillows. The refrigerator and the microwave both worked and there was Starbucks coffee for the room coffee maker. The bathroom was clean, but the shower stall seemed small for a room. the size that it was. I did like that the room was large, and that there were sufficient outlets and USB ports for the devices. After settling in and working in the room for a while, I noticed that the bottoms of my feet were black. After washing them off, I kept my shoes on. The shampooing of the carpet needs to happen more frequently. A beach resort hotel should have an on-site restaurant. I understand during Covid the need to deliver food to the doors in a sanitary way. We're beyond that now. The breakfast options were limited to a lot of carbohydrates and sugar filled yogurt and juice. I ended up with the hard boiled eggs. This hotel is located along a very busy road and the hotel manual warns you not across the street. It warns you only to turn right out of the parking lot. There was nowhere to walk to get a meal unless you wanted to brave the crosswalk down the road and eat fast food. we did GrubHub because it was the safest option. As some of the others posted, I probably will not come back here. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. I don't think the establishment really cares because I received no response when they surveyed me about how my stay was. I think they know that folks like being by the beach and will pay extra for it. It is very convenient to bring your family and camp out in a nice big room and spend time at the beach. That's probably the best use of this facility. read more

There is no reason I can find why Sugar Beach Resort doesn't deserve 5 stars. Our stay was exceptional. This was our third visit here and it has been recently updated. There was three of us ladies and we booked the family suite. Our suite had a king bed and sofa and then a separate bedroom with a queen bed. The beds were comfy, the room was immaculate, and there was plenty of space for the three of us. Sugar Beach is right on the bay with their own private access to the beach. There is plenty of lounge chairs and tables set up. If swimming in the bay isn't your thing they have an indoor pool and hot tub as well. There's a continental breakfast every morning from 6-10. The location is great. You're walking distance from restaurants, stores, and outdoor activities. Downtown Traverse is a 10 min drive away. We're already looking forward to our ladies trip next year! read more

There are endless places to stay in traverse city and they all look pretty darn nice from the outside. (Competition must be fierce) My family booked a trip to traverse city with only a week ahead of time since our Florida trip fell through, but we are so pleased with how this back up plan is working out. The area is absolutely gorgeous and there are plenty of fun things to do and outdoor activities to take part in, and of course Endless fine dining and fun dining options. We got a deal according to hotels.com on a junior suite at sugar beach and though the pictures were a little dull it looked nice enough to book and reviews were great. Well I can vouch that the hotel is extraordinarily clean and well kept. We are extremely pleased with how everything is turning. (The only negative would be breakfast, as it's not fresh options or budget style because of Covid, but they do deliver the options to your door- but I'd go back to a buffet style). But anyways, the room was outstanding for our family of four (wife, 2 year old, and 8 week old) plenty of room, a huge bathroom, and a decent size fridge which was perfect for bf infant. The amenities are great too with a Big indoor pool (and hot tub), arcade area, marketplace shop for essentials you may have forgotten, and a relaxing and picturesque beach front. Service has been great, especially with Liz at the front desk who handled a pretty hectic check in crowd. Professional in every sense of the word. Only 1 night in so far and looking forward to the next 4 days. read more

Horrible customer service! My car got broken into while I was staying at Sugar Beach. The manager and receptionist did not even acknowledge us as we were frantic with the sheriff. Then, I asked for assistance in using their public computer in the lobby so I can cancel all my credit cards and they simply said " I don't know how". Worst service. read more

Danielle and Katie were amazing. We had a nightmare of an arrival at a nearby property (smoke-filled room). Hotels.com moved us here and we had an amazing stay. Clean, comfy and recently remodelled. Note to guests, bathtubs are in the "family" rooms with two beds, showers only in the king-only rooms. Tasty breakfast, amazing location right on the beach and an overall great experience. We received text messages after check-in, the next day and at check out asking if we needed anything, had questions about the area, if we'd enjoyed our stay, etc. We will be coming back-- and telling all of our friends!!! read more

The staff was very Friendly and that's pretty much the only reason I'm giving 2 stars. The hotel itself is outdated. The elevator is awkwardly placed on the other side of the building no where near the lobby. I don't recommend The waterfront rooms because of the ridiculous amount of flies that get in the room. ALOT of flies. Couldn't sleep, just left. The 2 bedroom suite is not ideal as the one room is inside the other and rooms share a bathroom. So if you're in the smaller room in the suite, you pretty much have to ask permission from the other room to go. The beach is not big at all it's very narrow. Not worth it to me. read more

Bravo to the front desk staff. We pulled into town booked at another hotel. Due to the Blossom Inn being rude and unprofessional we zipped across the street to Sugar Beach. It was 11:30 am and had no expectations of getting a room right now, assuming we'd have to wait till check in to get into a room if they had any for the night. We explained we had a 22foot RV and a Dodge Ram truck to park. The lady working the desk took a moment to think explaining that they also had a tour bus taking up the back half of the lot, so she was trying to figure out where she could put us. After a moment she asked us to park in a specific location on the lot. She also managed to get us two rooms that where ready right away. The only thing my mom wanted was a room on the first floor so she could go out onto the beach. Front desk got her one and off she went to the room. We ended up on opposite ends of the hotel, with my husband and I on the third floor. Ya know, it was not a huge deal for us, we took what she gave us happily. Rooms where clean, although I wish they would clean the balcony, that's my only grip. This was our second time staying here, why didn't we just book with them right away? Could have saved us from dealing with unprofessional people across the street. read more

The beach is covered in white plastic lounge chairs all set out in lines. The beach view would be beautiful if not for the giant metal dock and twenty jet skis. The hotel was great. Friendly staff, nice amenities, decent pool, and being right on the beach is clearly the major draw here. The maintenance man deserves a special shoutout (sorry, I didn't get your name, but you're great!). Super nice, chats with guests, and it is clear he is great at his job. He was even touching up paint in the hallway after a busy weekend! The ONLY complaint I would mention is that I've heard they had a really great breakfast in the past (pre-covid). Now, I honestly didn't mind the boxed breakfast they delivered to the room. It was on time and as ordered every morning, and they have decent options (though I would appreciate opportunities for customization, but I understand they have a ton to assemble). Some other guests were telling us, though, what breakfast was like before - a full, hot breakfast buffet. Other properties in the area have brought their full breakfast service back post-pandemic, and Sugar Beach should do the same! But really, no complaints overall. read more

Nice family resort hotel with a huge beach and an abundance of chaise lounge chairs with many outdoor and watercraft sports available at an extra charge. Grand Traverse Bay/Lake Michigan water is very clear so great for playing or swimming in. This is definitely a family orientated and a very active hotel in prime season so if you're looking for a quiet place this may not be your first choice. Seemed like there were many family reunions and friend reunions going on. Lots of partying into the wee hours on the 1st floor balcony/ patio rooms. We had a balcony suite room. Bed was awesome w/many thick small pillows. Our room had a fridge, microwave and coffee machine w/horribly cheap quality coffee and all the bathroom amenities at least the first night. A few problems though. Our room card didn't work in any of the many outside doors after 11pm. So we had to always walk around to the main entrance. We had a bizarre maid who put all our dirty towels which we piled on the floor back up on the shower area, towel racks or crammed them under the sink. Fire the crazy maid please! Our room was sloppily cleaned the first night. The maid did not restock our bathroom toiletries or wipe down the tables in our room. Didn't even cover the bed with fitted sheet. We had to call the front desk on many issues. They don't have fresh or even canned cherries for your waffles anymore. Duh - this is the Cherry Capitol of our Country. The coffee was horribly bitter even in the free breakfast area. I'd probably would go back but in the fall if I got a good price when not so busy. Overall A-OK for a summer visit. read more

Incredibly disappointed with how Sugar Beach staff has treated us, specifically the managers John & Michelle who were on duty for Memorial Day... Let me start by saying this, we booked through booking.com for Sunday, May 24th - Tuesday, May 26th. We saw that booking.com was offering rooms for Memorial Day for $10 a night. I even called Sugar Beach directly to confirm this was the case. When I called the hotel they said, "if that's the rate you booked at, we will honor it". Before I got off the phone I asked if we could bump up our checkin time from 4pm on Sunday to a noon checkin. They confirmed they could accommodate us. Upon arrival we were told our room was not ready. No biggie, its a busy weekend after a pandemic. We were understanding of the delay with check in. So then we waited. Then we waited some more. Finally our room became available but not until an hour after our original 4pm checkin time. So that was a little off putting for us. We also were told we had to downgrade our room because our room we originally booked with booking.com was not available. We decided to let it go as we really just wanted to get into our room at this point. Once our room was officially ready, I went to pay for the security deposit and get our keys. Nothing at this time was mentioned of an incorrect booking fee error through booking.com. We happily enjoyed the rest of Sunday. Come Monday, we decided to enjoy the beach front of the property. We spent most of the day until roughly 3:45pm when Booking.com started calling us. We started getting calls that there had been a pricing error. We told booking.com that this shouldn't be an issue as we are the consumer. Then we started receiving calls from the hotel directly after this on the pricing error. We explained that we booked through booking.com and this shouldn't be something that the consumer should have to deal with. We went on enjoying the beach. Our daughters ended up going up to the room to shower. Upon arrival they were greeted by aggravated hotel staff demanding to talk to their parents. Once we found out, we decided to make our way back to our room. Needless to say we were shocked to find two police officers greeting us at our door along with hotel staff. We were told that if we didn't pay the pricing difference that we would be immediately escorted off the property. You can imagine how upsetting this was to our two small children to have to be harassed by hotel staff and the imagine of police officers backing them. We decided to call Booking.com to resolve this. Booking.com happily refunded us for the cheap price we booked with them. They informed us that a hotel staff member uploaded incorrect pricing on their website and that our issue was actually with the hotel. We were also told that the hotel had called the police on us. We spoke to the hotel managers on this. We were told that we had to pay the difference regardless of the hotels pricing error or be escorted off the property. We had no choice but to sign paperwork agreeing to pay an additional $100 dollars. We are a military family trying to enjoy our weekend. I am absolutely appalled at how we have been treated. read more

This is an extremely outdated hotel and the photos online are misleading. The hotel needs a complete gut job. The noise levels in the halls at all hours coupled with paper thin walls is a disaster when you're just looking to relax. We woke up to the smell of weed in the halls. It was like a trap house, except you're paying $600 a night to sleep in real time nightmare. We couldn't wait to check out. Also, website says free breakfast. It's misleading. When you get there; they make you fill out a" breakfast form" with 4 options. The options are kids cereal, oatmeal, a jimmy dean breakfast sandwich that you cannot modify because it comes pre-made, or a muffin. These all include a piece of fruit and a bottle of water. That's their "free breakfast." Book somewhere else. read more

Sugar Beach Hotel did not disappoint. My wife and our 2 wonderful kids stayed in room 124 for a couple of nights during the Cherry festival. First floor walk-out beach front room is super convenient. A little on the expensive side, however, every hotel room was during the week we visited (Independence Day). The room is very nicely furnished and large. Fridge, Microwave and DVD player (bring a movie and popcorn for the evening). First floor beachfront rooms have a semi-private patio with a table and two chairs. A second picnic table for four is also part of "your" patio and in sits out a bit further - It was great for a pizza dinner for the family in the early evening. The Beach is clean, spacious and best of all PRIVATE - as only guests are allowed in this section of beachfront. The water is ultra clear; shallow for the first 200 feet or so which makes it great for play with the kids no matter how old or young. Because it is on Grand Traverse Bay, the water is much warmer and calmer than any of the Beaches I've been to on Lake Michigan. The bay is great for a Wave runner ride which is pricey at $90 per hour but worth every penny - convenient rental right at the Hotel beach for wave runners, boats and the like. First time on a wave runner for me but it was no problem because there was plenty of room, calm water and very light traffic on the east bay where the Hotel resides. Continental breakfast with Belgian waffles, hard cooked eggs, cereal, bagels, muffins, juice and coffee. Waffles are prepared for you and a must have topped with Traverse City's finest cherries. I had the waffles topped with cherries each day I stayed! Cherries were simply delicious. Breakfast made the room price feel much more affordable knowing I saved about $75-80 on Two Breakfasts. The only downside was small pillows/few pillows in the room and no washcloths the first night we stayed. Great family hotel! read more

Great hotel located on the beach of the East Bay. I reserved a king spa room and the bathroom was teeny but it made sense for the big spa tub in the room. I really enjoyed the beachfront with the chairs and the whirlpool was great for relaxing. The room was clean and staff were friendly. The room was a little dark but I appreciated the CFLs and other green touches! Free wi-fi, free parking and continental breakfast included in the room rate were a great bonus. The location on 31 is also close to downtown. I would recommend staying here for a relaxing getaway or family vacation. read more

I would have loved to give 5 stars, BUT.... I came here in the off season so that means lots of open rooms. I asked for a view of the bay. Well I got that plus noise from everyone that walked into the door. They gave me a handicap room on the bottom level that was located right when you walk in the door. I heard the door open all night and everyone's conversation, the ice drop... all night, all night! If this was the busy season sure but when it's off season DO NOT USE THAT ROOM! Also I couldn't even enjoy my view and had to keep the curtains closed bc I was also at the spot where when people walk out to look at the bay they then turned around and can stare directly into my room. Everyone thought it was funny and waved. Ugh. Not an enjoyable experience and I will use a different place next business trip. The pool was nice and they got two stars for having adult time only in the pool at a certain time. read more

Probably one of the worst hotel experiences we have had. My husband & I booked two nights through booking.com for our stay at Sugar Beach. One of the nights we booked was for Memorial Day 2020. Booking.com had a ridiculously low price posted that we booked at. I was concerned that the rate might have been off. I called Sugar Beach right after booking to confirm that this indeed was a rate they had. I was told over the phone that they would honor the price that I had booked at. Our friends also booked at this same price & were also told the same by the hotel. Fast forward to check in time....Our room was not ready & we had an hour & a half wait for our room. The staff was incredibly short & unapologetic about this. Once our room was ready, I proceeded to check in. I again mentioned the low rate we booked at and wanted to confirm the price would be honored as we were told. I was again told they would honor the rate. Great, I happily proceeded to put down the normal credit card for security purposes. No paperwork was presented to me and there were no signatures that were asked. Once we got to our room we noticed a strong smoke smell. It smelled as if someone had just smoked a cigarette in our room. There were also several food crumbs all over the floor & couch. Our room appeared as if no one had cleaned it since the last guests. I called down to mention this & was told someone would get back to me. No one got back to me. We decided to head down to the beach and enjoy what sun was left for the day. Majority of the beach in front of our room was littered with trash and cigarette butts. It was disappointing to see that the beach was not well taken care of. Despite all this, we decided to make the best of it. Come Monday we spent the entire day on the beach. Towards the end of the day friends of our that were staying in a room next to us started receiving calls from booking.com. Booking was calling them to inform them that a hotel staff member uploaded incorrect pricing information & that the hotel wanted the difference. Our friends politely told them this should not be an issue for the consumer. Booking.com apologized for the inconvenience & said they'd let the hotel know. None of us thought anything of it since at check in time we were told our rates would be honored. Shortly after we decided to make our way back to the rooms. We were shocked to see police officers standing at our friends hotel room door!! Our friends were greeted by aggressive hotel staff escorted by two police officers. They were told by the hotel that they had to pay the difference on the spot or be escorted out of the hotel. We were all shocked and appalled by the treatment. The hotel kept saying that there was an error on their end and our friends needed to pay the difference. Since we were all 2.5 hours way from home our friends paid the difference. We were told that the hotel would be doing the same for the other 20 some guests that booked at this low rate and to wait for a call. We NEVER received a call. We checked out Tuesday morning & still no word on this issue. Several days after being home I realized there was an unauthorized charge on my credit card from Sugar Beach. I immediately called Sugar Beach to find out what was going on. The employee told me it was not their issue & that a manager would return my call at 2pm that day. I received a call at about 2:30pm from this same employee repeating that the hotel would not be addressing their pricing error. I was also told they can charge me whatever they like an no authorization is needed. I expressed my frustration that the manager still had not called me back & how poorly we were all treated during our stay. I sat on hold for several minutes before a manager came to the phone. The managers name was Ashley. She was incredibly rude & unapologetic. Unwilling to help resolve the situation. She told me it was my problem to deal with & that no compensation would be made. I asked if this was how they handled all price discrepancies between third party booking sites & she told me it was protocol. I have never had an issue with a hotel from booking through a third party. What makes this worse is that hotels upload their pricing deals into Booking.com. The hotel admitted their employee made a mistake when uploading pricing & even told me they would honor the booking rate & then charged me without any authorization after several days from our stay. Not to mention the poor treatment of our friends who apparently were the first ones to book this low rate & then had the police called on them by the hotel with a demand to pay the difference. Our friends are a military family who had their holiday ruined. Their two daughters were terrified by the hotel & police. We have all reached out several times about what happened with no return calls from the owners or upper level management. Incredibly poor customer service. read more

Sugar Beach was a great place to stay in Traverse City. I went on a family vacation out there recently. First off, the building was nice and clean from the outside. They have carts available by the elevators which are convenient to transport your luggage up to your room. My family got a double queen room. We had a balcony that overlooked the beach, which was a wonderful place to eat out on. We also got to see them comb the beach as well. There was plenty of seating available out on the beach, such as lawn chairs with umbrellas. The room was a good size and the beds were comfortable. There was a refrigerator, coffee machine and a microwave. The phone wasn't working, so we went down to the front desk and they sent someone immediately to fix it. The TV was standard also. The bathroom was spacious. One of the best parts of our stay: the free breakfast. They had two kinds of cereal, a pancake maker, yogurt with granola, fresh fruit, bagels, muffins, hard boiled eggs, french toast, pastries, juice and coffee. Overall it was a great experience and much better than my experience at the Beach Haus nearby. read more

Clean hotel. Great staff. Private beach for guests as well. We come here every year. The rooms could use an upgrade into new decor and newer TV's, but they are clean - which matters more to me. The breakfast is usual continental but it isn't stale like other places and has a deeper selection. The WiFi is solid and fast as well. Especially with all the devices now a days. Book well before your trip to save on the rate as well. Weekends can be expensive but comparable to the rest of Traverse City. read more

Just got back from a week in TC @ Sugar Beach (family reunion). Me, wife & 8-month old baby. Great place. Right on a nice beach, pool & hot tub inside for the rainy days (we had two). Jetski/kayak rental & just much more. Very family friendly place - really felt at home for me as well as my niece & nephew (12 & 8). read more

We stayed 2 nights in October 2021 and loved the hotel. The decoratuons gave a great beach vibe, the rooms and public spaces were very clean and neat. The staff were friendly and answered all of our questions about local reataurants and their reccomendations of places to eat were spot on. Close to all toirist areas but yet you feel secluded with a great beach and all the ameneties of a beach. Take time to see the local sites and suppot the local bussinesses! Will stay here again when traveling through. read more
