Sigh*. I told myself I wouldn't be back, but I kept passing this place and it's been over a year and I'm all about second chances. A few things they did improve which I'm really happy about! They accept card now!! That's huge. And their hot drink cups are sturdy and more decent looking. The service though is still subpar and not very friendly. The inside looks exactly the same but behind the counter looks a tad more clean. My coffee though? Still had to toss. Too watery. And I love to make Lavazza coffee at home! Which is what they serve. I wish I could just see what's going on with their espresso bar. I'd love to clean it, properly set it up, and teach a few tricks on how to froth milk. read more

I went here in the summer time because I thought they had ice cream. I mean their name is sugar bowl Cafe. After all. They do not have ice cream in the summer. The people behind the counter were extremely slow in taking orders and also preparing food. I asked for a Lime Ricky, which is like their signature drink. I was told they're out of Sprite??? I asked for a different drink and they also couldn't make it. So I just settled for an iced coffee. Overall a pretty disappointing experience. The owner / manager lady was very disrespectful and rude to me. I needed to use the restroom and saw a sign outside that said "restroom is for customers only". I entered the establishment, purchased two items, and asked to use the restroom. Only after the owner / manager had taken my money, did she tell me that her bathroom is private and not for customers. I pointed out the sign and told her that I was a paying customer, who had specifically made a purchase because I was handicap and in need of a restroom. She not only refused to let me use the facility, but she was rude to me and talked down to me as if I was a bad person for asking to use her "Private Bathroom" . She should be ashamed. I would give less than one star if that was an option. I will never return to this establishment again and I will be sure to let everyone know how bad they treated a handicap customer. read more

I was pleasantly surprised with this little shop! I wanted a shake up from my typical Dunkin' run and found Sugar Bowl. They have a lot of breakfast and lunch sandwich options but I went with the standard bacon egg and cheese on a bagel. A lot of coffee flavor options as well - I got cinnamon hazelnut. Was quite pleased with everything and the vibe looks really cozy, probably great to go to and hang out in in the winter. Only thing is they are cash only so don't forget your cash! read more

This is an update to my prior review. J.P., the owner of the Sugar Bowl, reached out to me regarding my first experience and wanted to make it up to me. He was so friendly, and his wife couldn't have been more accommodating! His commitment to providing great customer service and his passion for what he does showed both in me talking to him, and my visit there. They treated me to a sandwich and coffee - I got the turkey club and a latte. Both were very good. His wife kept checking on me to see if I needed anything - since she kept asking, I decided to also try the banana nut iced coffee :) I can see why the iced coffee has good reviews - it was very good. I also enjoyed the cozy back room with couches - it had a lot of character, and was a great place to chat and have a coffee (and enjoy the wifi). I talked with him again afterwards, and mentioned updating my Yelp review, but what was most important to him was that he wants me to come back again. Because sugar in all forms will you find behind the counter of this corner ice cream/coffee shop right on the border of Dot/Southie. And most especially, you will find some sugar in the service. The employees appear to be former cheerleaders who are drumming up big business with their wide smiles, adorable accents. It feels like the Coyote Ugly of coffee shops. Without the dancing on the bar part. I sampled an ice cream sundae. The ice cream is Brigham's (it's made at the hospital cafeteria, right?), the fudge wasn't spectacular. They have a great ambient to just relax. That is soo needed when you are looking to find a relatively quiet spot to work. Their snacks are awesome and could vouch for the quality of the food because I've sad her watching the staff create a well balanced snack. Notice that I called their food snacks. Well take that with a grain of salt because the portions are European ones. Not a bad thing and you don't leave feeling guilty that you ate something too sugary. I hear their coffee is underrated and a good find by my coffee connoisseur of a husband. So if you like coffee instead of having icky dd. Okay, yes. The girls that work here are pretty(ish). Perfect for the slobbering Dot guys and the occasional Southie boy (get over it, boys, they will never go out with you). It still doesn't make up for the fact that their service is lackluster at most. I've come here several times since I moved to Dorchester a couple months ago and I'm constantly disappointed with the service. No one seems like they want to be there, which is sad because it's actually a quaint, fun, vintage-style place. I would expect a more welcoming demeanor at the counter. They have good iced coffee and breakfast sandwiches, which are way better than the disgusting stuff they have at the Dunkin Donuts across the street (don't even get me started on DD), but sometimes I wonder if it's worth it. I will most likely continue going here, but at least now I know that poor service is to be expected. read more

Hint: just look for the spoon on the ground and you'll find this cafe :) Funny thing is, my 3 classmates and I stumbled upon this cafe during a class observation of the area for a needs assessment class. Of course, this quaint, cute little cafe caught out eye. The coffee was solid and the interior was really nifty looking with all the war propaganda adorning the walls. Also, if you'd like to use their wifi, just have an employee type the password in for you! Also, the owner caught us on our way out and was super hilarious and chatty. That friendliness extends to the staff, who no matter the length of the line or extravagance of your order will greet you with a smile. Remember Boston's water crisis and how nearly every coffee shop shut down? Not Sugar Bowl, who went out of their way to brew safe and delicious coffee manually. Staff was awesome, they made my drink, asked how it was, I gave my response that I tend to like it a bit stronger... they offered to remake it, I told them I didn't want them to have to re-do it and it was OK, and they said "no, we're doing this again" and fixed it up for me. Kudos. There's a little back/side area with comfy chairs/couches and such -- awesome. FREE WIFI -- extra awesome.
