PATTY MELT REVIEW Iconic diner on the edge of Chinatown, a couple blocks east of the Expressway. It's been around for decades and it's open 24/7. More of an authentic this-place-has-aged feel than the typical diner attempt to evoke an earlier era. Went in the morning and went for a patty melt-- because I could. It's too elusive these days, so being able to not only find one but have it at breakfast, a double win. Double patty is standard, not an add-on, and fries (probably frozen, but lengthy, crisp and fluffy) are included. No onions, no rye, but lettuce and tomato-- a non-traditional configuration. Nicely browned patties that had juiciness. The ingredients weren't anything to write home about, but the execution was great all around and so was the cheerful service from a seasoned veteran. Sure, I've had better with the proper rye, griddled onions, and higher quality beef, but an easy 4 stars for the execution, value, vibe, and being able to even order a patty melt before 10 in the morning. Bonus points for a plastic ketchup squeeze bottle that was slightly warm. Breakfast items (eggs, crispy home fries, and pancakes) on a neighboring table looked good. read more

I had an early morning flight out of Boston and wanted to grab breakfast before heading back to the West Coast. South Street Diner was one of the few places open that early, so I decided to give it a try. Parking was easy at that hour, and I thought it was kind of cool seeing a classic diner tucked in among all the large office buildings downtown. I was in the mood for pancakes and ended up ordering the diner special with eggs over medium, home fries, corned beef hash, bacon, and pancakes. Unfortunately, the food was mostly average to below average. The eggs were a little underdone, the home fries were slightly overcooked in spots, and the toast was pretty standard diner fare. The homemade salsa was actually a nice touch and added some flavor to the potatoes. The biggest disappointment was the corned beef hash. I was hoping for something homemade, but it reminded me of the canned version I grew up eating. The texture and flavor just weren't for me, and I ended up leaving most of it behind. The pancakes were okay but a little dense and doughy, nothing particularly memorable. On the positive side, the coffee was decent, the service was fine, and being open early is definitely a plus for travelers. Overall, I'd put this one close to 3 stars. It's convenient if you need breakfast before sunrise, but the food didn't quite live up to what I was hoping for. read more

Business owner who was working l as a door greeter hates working at his diner and I was probably an easy target for him because I didn't look like a drunk and high - grungy south bostonian, was alone and waiting for friends who invited me to that diner, to arrive. Got into a loud argument with me in the diner(and out of the diner later, when a friend arrived) called me a nuisance and other names, for asking for a table while I was sitting by the bar having coffee while waiting for my friends. I kept asking how i was a nuisance first from the 3 waiters(who said I'm not) then to him and he kept telling me to "fuck off" and "not to tell him" how to run his business - yes, nothing was making sense that are coming out of his mouth - even trying to make me fight him, even called-yelled repeatedly (7x) for the nearby BOSTO POLICE to come (he just looked at him from a distance), and told me to get out of Boston (I moved here 8 yrs ago, military stuff).I told him I am a veteran and I can be here in Boston if I want to. Nearby people -guy across the street, the guy standing next to the diner, and the 2 customer ladies sitting outside all said for me to let it go and he's not worth it. Thank you. Met by friendly greeters at the door who escorted us to the bar to be seated. Tables are reserved for 3 or more guests and since it was just my husband and I we sat at the bar. We didnt mind. Our sever, Marie was extremely attentive and nice. South Street Diner is a small but not too small venue which serves breakfast all day. With my meal, I chose a mimosa, not just the regular prosecco and orange juice, but an apple pie mimosa made with swirls of caramel and topped with cinnamon. It was good. The food came out fast, portions were huge to where I could not eat it all, and it was delicious. I'm sure if in Boston again, I'll return. read more

South Street Diner is a breakfast/brunch joint located near Boston's Chinatown & offers breakfast food all day, open 24/7! For me, I've only ever gone here at night, when food options are more limited. I find that their food is mid, at best and quality is lacking. The staff is okay; last time I visited, there was only one lady serving & it took forever to receive the bill. We spent more time waiting and asking for the bill every 5 min than actually eating lol. On the bright side, their menu items are reasonably priced for what you get. read more

What an AMAZING experience. We were visiting Boston for a couple of days and had this in my list to try and couldn't be more happy. I finally stopped by the South Street Diner, a Boston staple after many years of wanting to go! They offer very limited seating, an expansive menu, and a classic diner experience. The pancakes were decent, not alot of flavor and a bit too thick and chewy. The omelet was probably the best thing we tried. The banana bread offers a HUGE portion for the price, and is probably the most unique item they offer. Overall, I'm glad I gave it a shot, but I'm not sure I'd come back. Service was also surprisingly slow, despite alot of staff working in the diner and it not being very packed. Parking is pretty hard in this area of Boston too if you're driving. read more

It's been 25 years since I visited South Street Diner. At that time, it was a quaint, well maintained retro diner, complete with a carousel horse in front. Decided to return last month, hoping to repeat a happy, nostalgic memory. Unfortunately, I was shocked over the state of disrepair the diner was in.... literally, a dump. Depressing to see the lack of cleanliness, stools and booths badly in need of repair, coffee mugs covered with chips and cracks with the diner logo worn away. Screams "please take some care and return me to my former glory!" Even the carousel horse was gone, and the outside resembled a slum. Grill workers yelled at each other while working, oblivious to the handful of customers in the place. My service was quick and friendly enough, generous portions, but the patty melt was the worst I've ever eaten....soggy bread, dripping with grease to the point where everything slipped out of the sandwich. I was embarrassed for this diner to be considered the most iconic in the state. To say it needs a drastic remodel to restore its former charm is an understatement. No pride in ownership is evident. Depressing. I'll never return, and any tourist planning to check out this famous diner will be grossly disappointed. I'm reviewing Friday night takeout ordered via DoorDash from SIL in Georgia, for my birthday. I wanted comfort food, was being difficult (super hangry), and lonely since my twin bro is now in Georgia with my amazing SIL. Anyway, the meatloaf and mashed potatoes didn't look like much but it definitely tasted better than expected and was a backup to the original place that was out of the meatloaf and neglected to inform us about the meal, only bringing the cake which was great but another review. This review is based strictly on my takeout experience, as I didn't sit down to enjoy my food even though they are open 24hrs. I found this shop while searching for wings when I was in Boston for a few day, and they had the highest rating. It's definitely easy to see why! The wings were breaded (necessary), and VERY flavorful. Although they were buffalo (which is a flavor I typically avoid), these were tasty af. They were only slightly spicy, but seasoned so well. The fries were the star of the night, as even though they were takeout, they were super crispy, the spicy seasoning was on point, and they were piping hot! The one thing I have to take off one star for was the bleu cheese. It did not taste fresh at all and was maybe more gray than white. The service was on point, and the lady who gave me my food verified it was exactly what I ordered, and even gave me a drink while I waited. The restaurant is a typical diner, and it was cool to see so many people there at 1030pm just hanging out and looking completely comfy and relaxed. Will for sure return to eat in. read more

Perhaps the last 24 seven diner in Boston is this place right here if you're looking for delicious food early morning evening late at night 2 o'clock in the morning this is your place. The food is phenomenal and the prices can't be beat. You can get a burger and fries for about $15. The burger is gonna be two nice thick juicy patties and the fries are gonna be fresh out of the fryer and nice and crispy steaks house fries. Made us wait out in the snow for a 2 person seat while they sat numerous people after of us. After they sat 2 tables who came well after us, I asked and he told me they don't seat 2 at booths and there was indeed an older couple of JUST TWO at the first booth. We were at the diner for maybe 30 minutes, and I had barely taken two sips of my coffee when a bouncer abruptly came over and told us we had to leave immediately because they needed to seat other customers. We had already called our Uber and politely asked if we could wait (inside the door-not even at the table) since it was cold out and I was wearing a short dress. He didn't care at all and was incredibly rude about it. What made it worse was that there were still empty tables inside and only two small parties waiting outside--so it's not like we were taking up urgent space. For our breakfast before heading to Portland, Maine, we went to @southstreetdiner. It's close to the bus station. It was packed inside and thankfully they had seating outside for us. Dad had Lemonade and shared The Diner's Special with hubby. It included pancakes, eggs, ham, and home fries. I was thrilled to see Frappe on the menu, so I tried a strawberry one. That was so filling and a meal in itself. Definitely stop in early since it's not a huge place. It's had a long history, established in 1947 and is open 24/7. read more

Tips are based on service. I am in the service industry and it's very fitting that you would address no tip being left over your employees service. I will never come back here. Your server told us she didn't have to come in tonight but she's here. If they paid her better she would care more. But she doesn't care and that's my fault somehow? Verbally abusive? That's an insane accusation being that she didn't care our food was cold and got upset for us requesting to bring the drink we ordered twice. Why do we have a reason to be verbally abusive. Came in to order a reuben with a salad. I asked if they could add extra meat for an up charge but was told they can't do that. I also was not asked what type of dressing I wanted for my salad. You would think a server would welcome any small up charge to add to their check especially for a single top. He also didn't ask if I wanted a beverage so he just gave me water. I am a server myself so when i receive poor service it gets under my skin. The server dropped the check immediately after checking to see if I was enjoying my food. We were staying close by so we stopped in at this diner. It is sort of a throwback to when diners were diners. The place is small but they turnover their tables pretty quick. The cooking is done essentially right in front of you as you dine. They have several small booths. For our breakfast we had the diner special which was two eggs, 2 pancakes, hash brown and bacon. It's kind of 3 1/2 stars but I will round it up to four. This is one of the few places that's open late around Boston, and they do make a pretty good patty melt, with two patties to boot. It's an old timey boxcar style diner, and after a strong rain storm, I was sitting up the counter and the ceiling was raining on me. But at least the food was decent. read more

This may be the worst diner experience I've ever had? Been going here since the 80's. There we periods where it was great, then not so good, then great again . Now it's absolutely awful. The server couldn't care less . The food was dreadful . The bathroom absolutely filthy . ( usually like bathroom like kitchen ) the place looked very run down , a roach ran across the table . The only time I've ever tipped someone 10 cents. I couldn't get out of there fast enough . Such a pity.. I really hope the Deluxe town diner in Watertown doesn't devolve to this level. read more
