It's conveniently located in Sedona. It's also about expectations; everyone is understaffed, so I always appreciate the service staff who are working. It's a family owned old-school type motel. So keep that in mind the rooms are clean and have the things that I like, especially the coffee maker, because I drip make my own coffee every day, and there's a microwave and a small fridge. They suggested a local restaurant for a reasonable good tasting take out, and it was outstanding. they also had some to go bags for breakfast. There is an amazing old-school breakfast place right by the motel. If you're there for Sedona and the many activities, this is a great place to sleep at a reasonable rate. I stayed four nights and would again. I think it's important to support small family own businesses. read more

This is a decent hotel that feels safe and clean. The rooms are spacious, and the beds are comfortable. It's near enough to the town's main attractions, but far enough to be out of the traffic. One issue I had though, being very sensitive to light, is with the glass panel on the door. The blinds let through a lot of dispersed light, waking me up just before sunrise each morning in our east-facing room. I would have preferred a blackout curtain on the door. When you think of a Mom & Pop's place, this property is it! It's a family-owned business and it shows. You can tell that they put effort into making you feel like a guest & not just a number on their books. It feels good to give back to the community by stepping away from the corporations & supporting local! This cute little property is smaller so it feels more intimate. The hosts were super friendly & made you feel welcomed. The location is great, rooms are clean, the beds are super comfy & their pool set-up is stellar! We bought some goods at the market, grilled them up pool side & after cooking - we enjoyed them next to the firepit. It was the best ending to a wine-touring adventure day. We will definitely return! :) Side note: The TVs were older - so if you are wanting to stay in, veg & just watch TV, best to look elsewhere.... This was not an issue for us. There are two levels of motels/hotels in Sedona; low and high. Most are expensive. Sugar Loaf is one of the most affordable, with a great location. Primary area for improvement: Rooms are dated. Popcorn ceilings, aged carpet, bathroom fixtures hanging on from decades past. A few hundred dollars to update each room would significantly increase the motel's appeal for a second visit. There is a Dominos Pizza next door that has patrons until late hours, and they are sometimes noisy in the parking lot. read more

I booked a last minute trip to Sedona when our original plans to go to Sequoia literally went up in smoke. I booked Sugar Loaf primarily because of the price, but I cannot stress enough of how wonderful it was. For a motel, you really cannot beat the location and quality of service. The rooms were clean, the beds were soft, and the water pressure in the shower was hard. The pool area was clean as well, and blessedly empty every time we went to lay out and swim. Thor, the proprietor seems like really decent man and made us all feel at home. Additionally, if you're on a budget - the office provides a great continental breakfast - perfect for loading up before day hikes. When I go back to Sedona, I know where I'm staying again. Hm. Not sure why this is getting an average 4 stars on Yelp, even when viewing it through a lens of a "motel" ranking. I booked this based on Yelp reviews and I have to say my fiance and I were severely disappointed. This is an old lodge and can use a good scrubbing. Rooms were dark. Both sink and bathtub drains were clogged. WIFI barely worked during peak hours. Owner wasn't friendly. I stopped myself from giving only 1 star because I was thrilled there were no bed bugs! Only good thing was location. Can't recommend this spot, even for a quick overnight crash pad (which was what our stay was). Pony up a little more cash to stay in a better place. read more

This is such a cute little cozy lodge. Everyone was so kind, considerate, and the rooms were unbelievably clean! The small but sufficient breakfast was another plus. They provide fruit, yogurt, cookies and biscuits, juices, and coffee. Tip for the owner: A walk in shower would be a great addition as well. It's much more practical. read more

I decided to drop by Sedona on my way to New Mexico. The owner, Thor, and his adorable daughter, Fiona, greeted me warmly to their lodging. It's a simple motel, but peaceful and surprisingly quiet, despite it being right off a busy street. Room was very clean and appreciated the microwave oven & small fridge. Took advantage of the hot tub in the evening to rest my achy muscles. Ended up chatting with the owner and Fiona about climbing - turns out Fiona is a rock climber too! Thor gave great local tips on hikes nearby. My only regret is that I wished I'd stayed longer! I actually preferred this place than the fancy lodgings I stayed at in Grand Canyon & in Santa Fe. If you're looking for a simple, down-to-earth lodging with down-to-earth host and hostess, this is the place. I look forward to returning in the near future. read more

There are few times when my (& my wife's) expectations are utterly exceeded. This was the case at Sugar Loaf. We made same-day (off-season in November) reservations on our way south from Grand Canyon. Our intention was to find a simple place to crash for the night and then be on our way. Well, one night turned into 3! Sedona is a natural wonderland for those looking to get outside and connect with Mother Earth. Sugar Loaf positions you perfectly to get out and about. When it was time to come back for rest, the beds were very comfortable. As others have noted, there is an extremely friendly woman running the place. The rooms are clean, come with plenty of space and nice amenities such as free WI-FI (good too!), a microwave and refrigerator. The BEST bonus was the pool/hot tub and surrounding area. We asked to use the cute fireplace by the pool and even roasted a few marshmallows. There was a large & new-looking gas grill available as well. In short, this place made us feel at home and I'd love to visit again some day. If you are looking for a no-frills spot with a lot of extra charm, you can't possibly do better! read more

found this place on yelp and we were pretty pleased Two queen beds, round table with three chairs, two lamps, microwave , fridge, iron and board... No coffee maker, iron & board, bathroom had a nice tile counter, but not too many bath products, maybe one conditioning shampoo and two soap bars. One of those heating lights in the bathroom, mmm pool and hot tub looked great but we didnt get to use it, got in too late, but the gate was unlocked so we did go in and check it out. close enough to DT sedonna. Lady at the counter was very nice each time we called. there is breakfast, available, but it is just some oj pastries yogurt maybe fruit etc set on the counter in their very small office. We grabbed a couple pastries and a yogurt for the road. overall, we were pretty happy with this place and the price. read more

This is a great place to stay in Sedona for cheap. Great location with the iconic red rocks in the back drop. We visited in winter and never had to mess with the thermostat as it was always comfortable. Walking distance to Starbucks, Walgreens, and local restaurants. Would definitely stay here again. Gave 5 stars on the motel scale. 3 of us headed out to Sedona for 2 days of mountain biking. Location was perfect for getting to any trail network in the Sedona area and there is an option to hit a number of top rated trails straight from the lodge. Wholefoods, Over the Edge (bike shop), Picazzo's (dinner & cocktails), Starbucks and Coffe Pot Restaurant (breakfast) were all within walking distance. Plenty of room for bikes in the room and parking out front. Thor, the manager, is the most stoked mountain biker I have ever met. He has great recommendations for riding and is always around to geek out on mountain bike gear. Jacuzzi, pool and BBQ area were clean. Minifridge in the room was useful as well. I would stay here again and recommend to any mountain bikers visiting Sedona on a budget. read more

We just spent 3 nights here and had a great time. Website wasn't so helpful in booking so I made my reservation with booking.com. Maybe I could have just called and reserved that way, but oh well. Check in was a piece of cake and we were in our room in a matter of minutes. I liked the fact that this property is single story with parking right out front. Room was quite roomy and had all the amenities we needed. Beds were quite comfortable. I prefer a more firmer mattress but I slept peacefully. Nightstands featured lamps with built-in 5-15 outlets which is nice for charging cameras and cellphones. There was also a power strip near the little table that I used for my laptop. In fact, wifi was great. I had to reconnect every day but it served my purposes. I needed my laptop in case I needed to do anything with work. TV was a flat screen and I am not sure if it was cable or satellite. I didn't watch it too much. Bathroom area had a nice sized cubby for luggage storage and there was an ironing board and iron (which we didn't use). Single sink with a little coffee pot and coffee supplies. Shower had good water pressure but I think multiple units were sharing a water heater. I lost a little warmth when our sink was being used or the unit behind us was showering. Not a big deal though. I was able to hear our neighbor (the use of the water, not an actual person) when they were showering but that is the only time I could hear our neighbors. The room was clean. Not spotless, but clean. No funky smells. For a property this old it exceeded our expectations when it came to cleanliness. The heater provided warmth and wasn't so loud that it impeded our sleep. I never even heard the compressor to the mini fridge crank over but I knew it was working because our drinks were ice cold. Microwave operated flawlessly. No review on the pool as it was January and freezing outside. They offer a little breakfast in the morning. Nothing fancy. Some donuts, bars, juice, fruit, and coffee. It was just enough. This was the 2nd place I have stayed in Sedona. Both of which were "budget" motels. This place is my favorite. Between the two I would be booking here first. read more

We checked into room 12 and I like that our 2a.m. check in was made easy by leaving the key clearly outside the office for us. Also noted were wifi info, breakfast time, checkout time, etc. (on the key's envelope). We were too late for the pool/hot tub on the first night but did check them out the 2nd night and pool was cold but hot tub is large and made up for it. Managed to get up in time for breakfast the first morning and had donuts, juice, and coffee. The beds were kind of comfy. We had a king for the two teenage boys, and a twin for my boyfriend and me. Yes, you read that right. The kids are big and needed the space, so we pretty much ended up cuddling all night long, but getting pretty good sleep. Rooms were quiet and A/C worked great. Hiked around the lodge in the morning and found pretty views throughout the neighborhood. I'd stay here again. Only a little over two hour drive to the Grand Canyon, and there are lots of restaurants, bars, and grocery stores nearby. It's a small resort and $100/night is a good value because the area is great, but honestly it wouldn't take much to improve a lot. The bathroom wall near the toilet was really dirty, shower was slightly dirty, and the twin bed rocked like it was on a tree log, rather than a box spring. Rooms are a little dated: old carpet, small TV, but who goes on vacation to spend their time in a room anyhow? read more

This is definitely one of those 'Ma and Pa' establishments. We got into town just before the end of the day and Thor greeted us with a welcoming and chipper attitude. He was helpful and accommodating - making us feel right at home. The room was comfortable and had great amenities. Check-in was a breeze, and check-out was just as easy. I checked in at the Sugar Loaf well after hours, and an envelope had been left for me with my key. This is a true Ma & Pa operation, but everything was Completely Clean & Comfortable at a very reasonable price for the otherwise-very-expensive Sedona! In the morning, while waiting for my hiking friend George to pick me up out front, I met my delightful and intelligent hotel-keeper, Thor. While filling me up with the delicious and free breakfast items - all perfect to take on the hiking trail - we got to know each other pretty well. Such that he quickly extended my request for a late check-out so I could shower and otherwise freshen-up upon my return from a 3 1/2 hour hike. In Thor's honor, I have decided to rename one of the "Man-in-the-Mountain" rock formations I encountered in Sedona "THE FACE OF THOR." No word yet from the City Council or the National Park Service on whether they will take me up on this recommendation.... read more

It offered everything we needed to have a safe, restful sleep as we were on the go every day. Walking distance to some restaurants and food stores. We stayed here on pure yelp recommendation, and their rates were far cheaper than any hotel in Sedona. This place truly is a special spot. Away from the Disneyland that has become Sedona's main street, and away from the mass amount of construction goings on hwy 179. We stayed in one of the two main front rooms, which had a micro and a fridge, which was great. Also, there is free wi-fi, so when we were researching our hiking trails for the next morning we were set. They also have a jacuzzi and pool in the rear, where you can star gaze and relax after a long hike. It's soo quiet and peaceful. The staff is very friendly and they provide much needed hiking fuel every morning, OJ, coffee, granola bars, fruit, etc. With such a great price and fine location, Sugar Loaf is the place to stay while in Sedona. read more

Great place, I highly recommend this small place to anyone looking to stay in Sedona on a budget. The nearby hiking trails are fun as well as challenging. The room is small but it is very cozy, the beds are soft and the Wi-Fi is high speed. The location is close to anything you would need, Walgreens, various grocery stores, health food stores.
