There is a reason that this family pastry shop has been there for ages! Being an ICONIC location, it was very busy. Well, for one, they are an ICONIC must-visit destination and second, they serve great tasting pastry. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It is a pastry shop, so they have very limited seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They have cashier and barristas, just like any other pastry shop. Note this is a quick, point and pay pastry shop, just like any pastry shop. Great treats in a wonderful location, Carmel by the Sea.

Forever dreaming of this place. Line is worth the wait, and it goes quickly!!! The chocolate chip cookies here are absolutely amazing and gigantic!! I see why this place has been around so long! Hopefully they last forever!!

Came to visit on a Sunday and man was there a line . It did move along nicely it was just packed like sardines in there. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Hard to find seating inside as well.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The drinks are okay. My latte was basic and my sister was upset when her hot apple cider came out lukewarm. The baked goods and breakfast sandwiches are were it is at. I ordered an everything pretzel and it was so delicious it filled the air as soon as you walk in. My sister ordered a breakfast sandwich and it honestly could've been shared between two people it was that big of a portion. Our friend ordered a lobster tail and it was so yummy the creme wasn't too sweet and the flakey ness was divine. Would go again but just for baked goods.

Disappointing experience--overpriced, crowded, and not fresh.I was really disappointed with my visit here. The bakery items were definitely not fresh, which was surprising given the high prices. They are way too overpriced for the quality they offer. To make matters worse, [[HIGHLIGHT]]the space was entirely overcrowded and incredibly loud.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was so packed that there was absolutely nowhere to sit, and it was hard to even move around.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Between the stale food and the chaotic environment, it wasn't an enjoyable experience at all. I wouldn't recommend it.

On our long drive to San Francisco, the one stop my wife planned for us to rest for the evening was Carmel before continuing our final stretch to The City. After visiting other fun cities, we got into Carmel before 6:30pm with the goal of watching the sunset overlooking the ocean, which is within close proximity to where we were staying. Before we walked down towards the sea, we decided to look for a coffee house, so that we can drink something warm as the sun descended. We found Carmel Bakery and the White Mocha Hazelnut coffee they made me was tasty and hit the spot as we strolled towards the beach. While we were walking through the main drag of Carmel, many of the shops were closed, but fortunately for us, Carmel Bakery was opened. The bakery is a few shops down from The Xocolatl Garden, next door to B&G Jewelers, and a few shops east from the popular Dametra Cafe Greek restaurant. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a cute coffee shop with its pretzel logo signage hanging above their glass window showing off their baked goodies.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We walked to the bakery, but there is street parking. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Inside the cafe, it's cozy with several tables/chairs settings.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]On one of the walls hangs a pic of Carmel Bakery when it was first established in 1899 and it's amazing that the bakery is still in its original building 127 years later.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There are old school pics of families enjoying birthday cakes, hanging baking tools and propped up glassware, and a quote from John Steinbeck arched on one of their walls. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The focal point of Carmel Bakery is their central glass display case showing their pastries, cookies, and pretzels.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They also have a display case featuring Gelato Artigianale, which is house-made artisanal Italian gelato. Besides espresso drinks, coffee, and tea, they also serve iced drinks, gelato, an acai bowl, and breakfast items. If we're ever in Carmel again, I'd love to try their savory items, but we visited solely to purchase coffee. I decided to order a White Mocha with Hazelnut flavoring. After taking my first sip, I remarked to my wife that Carmel Bakery's coffee was delicious and flavorful. The coffee was hot and provided that necessary warmth as the sun was starting to go down. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Drinking a tasty coffee as we watched the sunset in beautiful Carmel was the proverbial icing on the Carmel Bakery cake.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Glad we came upon one of the few businesses still open and glad we were able to drink coffee as we experienced the breathtaking environment we were vacationing in.

Cute bakery with a lot of baked goods. My Vanilla Latte was delicious, Almond Croissant just okay. First contact with a server was no contact, as she skipped my friend and I and went straight to the person behind us...rude. Pretty sure we don't look dangerous so idk what her problem was...whatever. Next server was perfectly nice and professional. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Busy, with a long line and not a ton of seating inside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

This place is such a cute little bakery in the heart of Carmel. I ordered their famous pretzels and freshly made cream filled horn pastries. Their pretzels were as expected. They were warm and chewy. The pastries were out of this world. The crust of the horns were crunchy and flaky. The cream was fresh, slightly sweetened, and the hint of vanilla made it even better. It gets packed super fast. The service was friendly, but very busy environment. I highly recommend this cute little bakery! They make all their treats in house expect for their dog treats.

I was in Carmel celebrating a friend's birthday and it is such a cute little town! We stopped by here one morning to grab breakfast. You order any of the bakery items displayed while waiting in line and then when you get to the register you can place your drink and order for any items they need to make. I ordered an iced vanilla latte, cinnamon roll and the Petit Dejeuner. Everything was soo delicious!! Cinnamon rolls are my favorite and oh my this one hit the spot!! I would also highly recommend getting the "Petit Dejeuner", which is a ham/egg/cheese croissant. The herb aioli with the arugula made it so flavorful, I enjoyed EVERY bite!!

A lot of pastries and coffee/tea/not caffeinated options. Everything looked delicious. The service was quick and line moved quickly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Small place not a lot of sitting options inside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Sad to see such a low rating because the pretzels were phenomenal! The store was quite busy but the line moved fast and the pretzels were both enjoyable fresh and reheated later. Highly recommend for the pretzel at least!

Right on ocean ave, this is a very popular spot. I would think it is more popular for its pastries and ice cream than its coffee. The place always has long lines on the weekend, we went on a Monday and we still had a few people in front of us. It's a nice cozy place, with a lot of staff so the lines definitely aren't due to lack of staff. I got a caramel macchiato, it wasn't the best coffee, but it wasn't the worst either. It had a lot of milk for a macchiato, that was a little disappointing.

Honestly, I'm a bit torn on this one. Carmel Bakery is clearly a local popular bc the line was wrapped out the door and we waited almost 30 minutes just to get to the counter (line moved slow though I know the staff was trying hard) I really wanted to love the food, but it was a bit sugar overloading. We ordered eclairs and the thing was absolutely big, which is great for the price, but it was just way too sweet. Even with two people sharing, we couldn't actually finish it. If you're into super sugary, heavy American dessert style, you may love it, but I personally prefer something not sweet so this was not my type. The drinks were just okay too. I tried iced latte and Italian soda and both didn't really feel like anything special. It's a cute place still, but I don't think I'd rush back.

This cookie was so soft, moist, and HUGEEE. Love the salt they add on there. It definitely balances the sweetness. Service was good, line is long but worth waiting in. Easy to find while walking thru carmel! Super clean, kinda hard to find street parking though.

Coffee please, well wouldn't ya know there was a place across the street. It was 12noon small place, no line, lots of pastries and some lunchish items in the cooler case. Large hot Mocha no whip for me, P got himself a latte thing. Both drinks were up almost instantly and out we went. First sip ah...warm....wait a second. Paul said mines cold...er. The pastry the server chose for me was good, no pastries are made on the premises. Not sure about the lunch snacks origin. We sat at the bistro tables on the sidewalk and admired the parade of tourists and residents. P went in for a reheat, I washed the pastry back with my warm coffee. The reheat worked for P, no problem. We enjoyed the scenery, had a few laughs, and left when a resident tried to parallel his Rolls Royce in front of us. From the outside, the place looks like a little hole in the wall with just a sign outside and an A-frame advertising their specials. When you step inside, however, it is surprisingly roomie with a few places to sit. My +1 tried the lavender latte (with honey) and liked it so much that she ordered it again. I'm not one for lavender, but I took a sip just to try it, and the latte was very pleasant and the honey added just the right amount of sweetness. I on the other hand, opted for the Tidal Wave, which was their blend of energy drink, and raspberry syrup added. It was admittedly, a little sweet, but I found myself ordering it again. Also just because I needed that extra kick, and the sugar didn't bother me with all the walking we were doing. Unfortunately, I don't understand the hype at all. I've had fantastic donuts from plenty of places, and these simply aren't in that category. To me, it tasted like a pretty basic donut covered with an excessive amount of sugary toppings and glaze. Instead of tasting fresh, balanced, and flavorful, the sweetness completely overwhelmed everything else. I couldn't even finish mine. It was so overly sweet that I actually felt sick afterward. Maybe this style of donut works for people who love extremely sweet desserts, but it definitely wasn't for me. This feels like another place that became popular because it photographs well and gets pushed heavily on social media rather than because the food is exceptional. If you take away the hype, I just don't see anything particularly special about the donuts. Definitely a one-and-done experience for me.
