    Outside after their rebuild
    Krystal C.

Walked in with a large group during the weekend and got sat and served fairly quick for being so busy. Food was great portions and tasted great after a long days ride!!! A must stop if passing by for a great place to people watch, have good food, and enjoy the atmosphere.

Just like the sign says--biggest and best burgers in the Hills! The burgers are awesome, the fresh-cut fries are perfect, and the service and atmosphere make this a must-stop whenever you're out cruising around the Hills.

Great burger and fries, friendly service and enjoyed the patio area! Definitely worth the stop!

the remains of a burned out sugar shack

The Sugar Shack on US385 south of Deadwood SD... A great little restaurant, an icon of the Black Hills. Sadly, it burned down on the night of December 13, 2023. The owner has talked about rebuilding. I hope it happens.

Sugar Shack with a view. Only outdoor seating and opened year round!

Speed, taste, friendliness and a great view! We had a party 12, food came out fast and was soo good! Burgers, Philly Cheese steak, fries...all were super! Bathrooms are port-a-potty's, but we're clean!

Our group of 3 had corn beef hash, salad with chicken, pancakes, eggs and bacon. The pancakes were described as "the best restaurant pancakes I've ever had" We walked in about 30 minutes before they were closing (1:30pm closing time) but were welcomed warmly and our waitress was attentive and chipper without hovering. And even with iced tea and a soda, the total was $33. If we're ever this way again we'll definitely come back.

Everything from the attitude greeting at the door to paying the incorrect tab amount. It was awful. It took us a minute to find parking and finally found a spot up the street. We walked in and immediately the lady said how many people, we said 4 and she then said 'Well we have a limited menu today. You can get a breakfast burrito, breakfast sandwich or biscuits and gravy'. All of us were fine with that and said that is okay, then she looked around the room and said 'Well it is going to be a while' and then walked away. Not even a hi when we walked in the door, just straight to trying to drive us away. I went to the restroom and as I came out a table of 5 people that all had biscuits and gravy was being sent back the kitchen. That didn't look good since that is what I wanted. I heard the server ask the cook if he could heat them all up. I guess they were all cold. I could deal with that. We stood around waiting for about 15-20 minutes and the I walked over to their tiny casino area and threw in $5 to waste some time. Finally the same rude chic said to us that she had 2 high top 2 seat tables if we wanted to split. We were tired of waiting so we took them. Then we waited and waited. We watched several people come in and wait to be greeted and never spoken to, so they leave disgruntled. We waited maybe another 15-20 minutes watching other tables wait for their food and even their drinks to come. We finally got asked what we wanted to drink. We got iced tea each and ordered our limited menu breakfast. And then we waited FOREVER. The table next to us finally got their food in 2 waves with about 5-10 minutes apart. The server said the cook cannot make the gravy fsst enough. Honestly, they shouldn't have the biscuits and gravy on the menu if it takes that long. And why couldn't they have a basic breakfast, eggs, hash brown ham or sausage and toast. This was literally the items on the sandwich or the burrito. Would have made things easier for the cook. Our food finally arrived. My husbands breakfast sandwich looked amazing and it was steaming hot. My biscuits and gravy were good.... at first. One biscuit was light and fluffy but when I got to the second biscuit it was completely burned on the bottom. I couldn't even cut it. I gave up. The server gave us our tab and charged up for an omelet and hash browns for $13. They didn't even have omelets available! Then when my husband questioned the bill and the server started arguing with him. How are you going to charge us for something you don't even offer? It was ridiculous. Overall we were there for almost 2 hours which cut in to our drive time to come back to Denver. Thanks, but I won't ever be back.

They even have a full bar! This is a sports bar, and they have the cool option to have a half portion of an appetizer instead of fries for a $3 upcharge. My husband was delighted to be able to have fried mushrooms as his side. The kids and husband had milkshakes, and they were made quickly, and everyone loved them. They have a bunch of local beers. I enjoyed my Rapid City made beer and enjoyed a sip of my husband's Spearfish beer. I had a burger, which was perfect. The fries were good. I also had some of my daughter's hot wings. They were meaty and spicy. I loved them, although I wish they had come with celery sticks. Not a big deal, though. The restaurant is decorated with old slot machines, which were fun for the kids to look at while we waited for our food.

After a long day of traveling, we called to place a takeout order about 30 minutes before closing. The employee who took our order, a woman in a green shirt, listened while my sister and I ordered, then let out a loud, frustrated sigh and said, "Ugh... is that it then?" Her tone made it very clear that our order was an inconvenience. When I arrived to pick up and pay, I stood at the counter much longer than I should have, and it became obvious I was being ignored. The woman in the green shirt who had taken our order made eye contact with me multiple times but continued to act as if I wasn't standing there. There were three employees behind the counter, yet none of them acknowledged me. The only person who finally came over to help was a kind woman who had been sweeping on the other side of the restaurant. She stopped what she was doing because no one else would. I have 13 years of waitressing experience, so I completely understand how frustrating last-minute orders before closing can be. However, that's never an excuse to treat paying customers with disrespect. We called before closing, were polite throughout the interaction, and simply expected basic customer service. If taking an order 30 minutes before closing and acknowledging a customer at the counter is too much to ask, then maybe customer service isn't the right fit. Being busy is understandable. Being rude and pretending customers don't exist isn't. Needless to say, we won't be back.

My wife ordered the Chicken Primavera with gluten free penne, featuring grilled chicken, pesto, and carrots. It was excellent and easily the standout dish of the evening. My wife has gluten and dairy allergies, while I manage Alpha Gal syndrome, a tree nut allergy, and diabetes. The kitchen was able to accommodate the gluten free pasta request, which we appreciated. The atmosphere is one of the restaurant's biggest strengths. The historic building and the old photographs covering the walls make for a fun dining experience and really add to the character of the place. Service was just okay. Nothing was wrong, but it also wasn't particularly memorable. One thing worth knowing before you go: the restaurant adds a 4% surcharge for credit card payments, so if you'd rather avoid the extra fee, bring cash. Overall, we will probably pick something else a try if we return to Deadwood. Worth it if you are heading there just for the historic atmosphere.
