The women help at the restaurant need training in being courteous. I was visiting the Black Hills at a B&B, and my laptop couldn't find their WI-FI. I had to finish work for a customer that would take 15 minutes. I go to the sugar shack ( 15 miles away) and ask to use their Wi-Fi, sit down order a beer, tipped double the norm. After 10 minutes, more people come in with a group, the bar tender told ( not nicely) me that they need my chair for the other people and to move at the bar. Since I was in the middle of some calculations connected to a VPN, I could not. Oh..yeah, I offered all the chairs around my table to their guests. Jeeez....if was very obvious that I was not surfing the web for shopping. Kindness goes a long way, in this case there wasn't any. read more

This is a very popular local basic burger restaurant. It is in a very old building the food is good and the stairway is an adventure see pictures. The breakfast run between eight and $12 and the lunches between nine and $14 which are mostly burgers. Best burgers in the hills ....BUT we frequent there 3-5 times a year and the the place needs some maintenance. The basement bathrooms are always flooded and now forced to use portable potty. The tables were all dirty , flies everywhere and the sign is falling down and faded. The owners used to show pride and now I believe it's just all about the $$$$ read more

We chose the Sugar Shack ahead of time and included it in our recent vacation itinerary after studying it online. I wanted to go there for their famous hamburgers, unfortunately we were there at 9 a.m. while they were still serving breakfast. However, after explaining that we had come all the way from Texas and this would be our only shot at having one of their burgers, our very sweet waitress arranged for me to have their 1/2-pound "Bubba Burger" for breakfast. It was absolutely killer -- big, juicy, fresh, with plenty of fries. Now that's the breakfast of champions. If we're ever in the Black Hills again, the Sugar Shack will be a must stop. Great service and very good food at a decent price in a hole-in-the-wall atmosphere. It doesn't look like much on the outside, but this place is a hit with us. This place is up for sale (2011), so I can't attest to the quality should it sell and go to someone who can't run a good diner. This is a burger shack, primarily. They have beer, a small menu, fried items. They also serve breakfast. It's a hit with mainly locals and "good ol' boys" who four-wheel in the vicinity and drive their four-wheelers up here to eat and have a beer. There's a large, covered outside patio, too. You'll find it on 385 and it sort of comes up upon you by surprise. I would imagine that tourists also eat here, if they're on their way to/from Deadwood. The Sugar Shack and Boondock's are about the only places to eat if you're on 385 and hungry between Deadwood and Rapid City. They really do make a mean hamburger: fat, big, juicey and good. There's not much atmosphere here though, as the dining area is very small, maybe four tables, then the counter which has maybe five or six stools. But the service has always been good and jolly. That's because the place is so small, the help really can't shirk, because everyone's elbow-to-elbow. Which sort of says something good about small diners. read more
