6 of us stopped in last night while walking around downtown PSJ. It was packed, standing room only, but we didn't have to wait long for our order. All of us tried something different. When we're in PSJ we always stop here. This was the first place our kids tried ice cream years ago.. We used to love it...but we tried it twice this trip and the service was SO bad. The first time we thought maybe the awful customer service was just a fluke but the second time confirmed that's not the case. The kids working in this shop are literally sooo rude, so blatantly miserable and unhappy to be there. It is genuinely awkward. Coming from a long history in restaurant work I know working with people all day can be hard but not even a "hi" when you walk in the door or a peep when you're ordering your ice cream (the only time you really kinda have to use words) is pretty bad. While visiting the little downtown of Port St. Joe, our group wanted to try different spots to eat. We went to Sugar Shack for some ice cream. When we entered the shop, there were no other customers and there were 2 people behind the counter. Neither of them spoke to us as we entered. We walked up to the counter and had to ask if they were ready for us to order. We our group ordered 2 ice cream cones and 2 bourbon pecan ice creams--we requested the smallest size and the response was "it's prepackaged and comes in one size." We were fine with the information, but that was literally the only words from the people who worked there. The ice cream was fine, but given the poor service, we would recommend visiting one of the other establishments for dessert. read more

We recently found the Sugar Shack while staying in Port Saint Joe. The service was excellent and the ice cream, Amazing.. My husband had the homemade praline's and cream and I had a hot fudge sundae. We also got 2 pup cups for our miniature golden doodles and it was actually a cup with 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream in each cup. They had never had ice cream before and it was a lot for a small dog. They each only got to enjoy a little of it. Where we are from a "pup cup" is a dixie cup filled a spray of whip cream. It was a very nice, clean place with friendly service. We would go back. This place seems fairly new, looks like it was just opened in the last couple months. The ice cream is made with local dairy and without additives. The ladies running the counter were so sweet and helpful. The salty caramel ice cream is so so so good! We came here on an exceptionally rainy day to get my nephew ice cream. When we walked in there were three women behind the counter but no one greeted us and they looked depressed. I asked if they had any options for soy/dairy free and was met with annoyance as they had to look it up in an ingredient book. They served us and didn't care to make small talk at all. It was so uncomfortable. It was just us and one small family sitting at a round table maybe a couple feet away from the main counter. It was difficult to get around the table/people and make it out the door. I left feeling like the experience was pretty bad, I mean I understand if you don't like your job but maybe fake it til you make it. A smile and kindness can go a long way.
