Martina was very responsive with details and friendly about all my request for a last minute birthday cake idea. The cake turns out AMAZINGGG and DELICIOUS my sister was obsessed with it. Only thing was the pickup location is close to Ridgewood which is kind of far from the city, but it was worth it!! Overall had a great, efficient experience with Sugar Sketch and would definitely come back for more custom cakes!

I took Martina's cookie decorating class and loved it! she is so talented and encourages everyone to express their own style while teaching you everything you need to know to do cookie decoration on your own. she shared so many tips and techniques. Definitely recommend taking the class.

Such a great process! Easy to work with, beautiful and delicious. I definitely will be ordering again.

Sugar Sketch is amazing. We are from So Cal and took a girls only trip to NYC in April. It was my sisters 60th birthday and I wanted special New York themes cookies to celebrate the occasion. Not only were the cookies great tasting but the designs were awesome. I requested the cookies be delivered to our hotel near Battery Park and the instructions were followed perfectly. I highly recommend them. Thanks Martina!

My brother and husband got a custom cake made from here for my birthday and wow, it was amazing! My brother sent them a photo of a cartoon character I like and the cake was a perfect depiction of the character. The taste was amazing too and we enjoyed it for a few days after. Highly recommend sugar sketch.

Another tiny cupcake place on a quiet side street in the East Village (or maybe Alphabet City is more accurate). Contrary to the Yelp note that says it is temporarily closed, it actually is open as of today. The focus here is on those beautiful, giant, custom cakes, but they also make stuff for walk-ins, like cupcakes and other sweets, as well as a few savory options (though they are listed on the menu as being available after 10 AM, there was nothing ready at 12:30ish). They had samples out of some of their bars and cake pops, which were delicious, especially the Nutty Nutella Bar. Other than that though, you mostly have the cupcakes to choose from, which come in simple flavors, like red velvet, chocolate, vanilla, etc. ($3 each), or custom creations you can design yourself, or pick from among a list of 18 suggested combinations ($4.50 each). The custom cupcakes are pretty small for that price, and while they taste good, they are not particularly exciting nor different from what you can find at the several cupcake shops nearby.

Stopped in here earlier today. This cute little cupcake and sweets shop is relatively new. Though, their cake designs from both online and in their windows are insanely impressive. A giant tiered Pokemon cake greeted me in the shop as well as a molded turkey and pumpkin cake. Cupcakes frosted to appear as boquets of flowers. Adorable idea for weddings. I tried a cappuccino, their cupcakes, and most importantly their cheese clouds. If you do anything when you visit this spot - coffee is discounted early in the mornings - get the cheese clouds! Fluffy biscuity buns covered with cheese and stuffed with cheese, prosciutto, rosemary, and sea salt. My friend went more decadent with her coffee and ordered an iced macchiatto with nutella and fresh cream. It was extremely decadent but the fresh cream on the coffee is luxurious. Cupcakes are made not too sickenly sweet which I like. Very buttery and creamy. Nice fillings. I would go with the peanut butter and jelly combo, birthday cake, or smores cake. Intrigued by what Gianduja is and would have to come back for that one. It's a 30% hazelnut to chocolate ratio made popular in the Napolean age. Had to google it out of curiosity. Cupcakes are around $3-5, pending on how customized you want to go and if you go crazy it can get more expensive but typical for a solid bakery. Store owners and bakers were insanely friendly and made great recommendations.

    We loved our piggy cake!!

This fantastic bakery is on my block and I kinda thought they only did cupcakes and other little baked goods until they started displaying their carved cakes in the window. I knew then they would be making my ridiculous "roast pig" wedding cake for my Luau themed wedding party. Martina was instantly accommodating and so easy to plan and work with. We chatted via a email, she sent me a few sketches, we bounced ideas back and forth, and then they executed and delivered the perfect cake (also enormous) to my venue with no hassle AT ALL. Sadly there was so much going on I never got to try it, but my guests that had the cake LOVED IT. Highly recommended bakery!! Thank you so much!!

I've been here a few times since the week they opened and each and every time I've been really happy with the quality of their baked goods and coffees. Prices recently also got adjusted so that's even more awesome, lol. Martina (owner and head baker) along with her assistant Christina are both really sweet and awesome. The space is small and welcoming with all their baked goods on display for the gawking. The cupcakes here are moist with perfect texture and all their frosting is housemade. Sugar Sketch's menu is also really diverse with a plethora of items that are sweet as well as savory - they even have gluten-free options too! Being more of a savory fan myself I am a HUGE fan of their cheese clouds. OOOOOOMG THEIR CHEESE CLOUDS YOU GUYS!! They come in classic rosemary cheese, prosciutto and cheese and their newest creation TRUFFLE CHEESE. Their classic was my favorite thing here but yesterday I tried their Truffle Cheese cloud and my life was forever changed. I also tried their Nutella Loaf yesterday and it's like a sweet bao bun cake stuffed with Nutella. I went NUTS over it! (Har, har - pun completely intended). Beverage-wise they've got cold brewed coffee, hot coffee, hot chocolate and all sorts of fancy dranks like their Nutella Macchiato. Yeah, I realized I mentioned 2 Nutella items...but what can I say, I love my hazelnut flavors, lol. Go here and go here soon, you won't regret it!

Cake and cupcakes for NYC Taco Showdown event!
    Andrea W.

I tasted these cupcakes at the NYC Taco Showdown, and they were delicious! I had the red velvet and the strawberry, and although I liked the former more, both frostings (if that's the right word for it) were very creamy and not too sweet, just the right consistency. The red velvet was a lot more moist though for the actual cake part, and the fillings in both were a pleasant surprise. Overall very good cupcakes, but I'm not sure whether I'd be willing to pay the price per cupcake in the store.

This was the best cake experience I have ever had from start to finish! Martina understood what I was looking for and was super accommodating. My boyfriends 30th birthday cake cake out even better than I could've imagined. I always worry that cakes that look beautiful don't taste great, but was totally wrong here. We did a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting on the inside and it was delicious! Everyone kept telling me how delicious it was. I cannot thank Martina enough for creating the best cake for my boyfriends birthday celebration!

Delicious little cupcakes, yaasss-sir-ree.. Am always happy to welcome a new spot to satisfy my cupcake fix.. and this place is steps from my door.. gosh-darn-it ;-).. Good cake to frosting ratio, moist cake that was not too sweet. All in all a good cupcake. Cute shop, hospitable pleasant owners.

    Cactus themed baby shower!

After contacting 4 different bakeries and getting little to no response on their custom cakes, I decided to reach out to Sugar Sketch for help. From the very beginning Martina was a gem. Super easy to work with and helpful w/ her recommendations. I feel so happy writing this review because the cake turned out AMAZING! The cake was so flavorful, moist, buttery and so much more :) Needless to say, it was gone within minutes-I mean GONE. The cake really brought out the theme, which for the record was a cactus themed baby shower. I definitely recommend this bakery and will happily be a returning customer!

The all-inclusive beverages and…read morecomplimentary charcuterie were a really nice touch to start the evening, especially if you arrive hungry like I did. We started by learning how to make Chicken Marsala, then moved into pasta making (my favorite part). After that, we learned how to make fresh mozzarella, and finally ended the night with dessert: tiramisu. The entire experience was so fun and interactive. I especially appreciated how knowledgeable Chef Alex was about everything we were making. When I asked about the type of pan she was using and why, she gave such a detailed and thoughtful explanation, which I really appreciated. By then, we had definitely worked up an appetite! We started dinner with a delicious salad and focaccia bread, followed by pesto fettuccine made from the pasta we created ourselves. Then came Chicken Marsala with mushrooms, and ricotta-stuffed ravioli in red sauce, also handmade by us. One of the best parts of the night was the atmosphere. Cooking, eating, and learning alongside people you've never met before somehow felt so natural and welcoming. You genuinely leave feeling like you made new friends. If I had one honest critique, I do wish there had been more opportunity to personally season some of the dishes to taste, as I felt parts of the meal were a little bland for my preference. I also personally prefer softer pasta over a firmer al dente texture. That said, I completely understood why the pasta had that texture since we didn't have much time for the dough to fully rest and develop. I also think some light Italian jazz music playing in the background would have elevated the atmosphere even more and really taken the experience to another level. Overall, I had a wonderful time and would absolutely take another class. It's definitely worth it for the experience, the knowledge you gain, and of course... dinner! Also, we got home (with our left overs) and finally had the tiramisu... and WOW. It was soooo delicious. The ravioli and tiramisu were definitely the stars of the show for me!

When signing us up, I mentioned in a note that her dream is to become a chef. The class included seven or eight adults and us, and Chef Paul went out of his way to make her feel welcome. He took her under his wing, showing her basic techniques and treating her aspirations with such respect that she felt truly seen and encouraged. We arrived early, and Chef Paul shared that he began cooking in a professional kitchen around the same age as my niece, then apprenticed under a famous chef in Paris at 15. He later became the head chef of two restaurants before opening his own culinary studio. The class focused on French cooking and included a four-course meal. I loved that it was small and intimate--just 10 people--compared to other classes I found that had 16 to 20 participants. Although we worked in groups of four to prepare each dish, Chef Paul brought everyone together where he demonstrated key steps across all the courses--techniques that many cooks get wrong--and showed us how to do them for the best results. He even provided special recipes for us to take home and ensured that each student got hands-on experience with parts of multiple dishes. It truly felt like a shared and collaborative learning experience. By the end of the three-hour class, our class of nine or ten had shared a delicious meal and great conversation. My niece was absolutely thrilled and left even more inspired to pursue her dream. If you have a child who loves cooking, I can't recommend Chef Paul highly enough. He even offers children's group classes upon request. Thank you, Chef Paul, for such a warm, generous, and unforgettable experience!

The group was small, just 6 people, so we got almost a private class. Entire class was well planned and organized. Each of us got some hands-on stuff to do, we asked questions, took notes, enjoyed our meal, yet we ran exactly on time. John provided a lot of information not just on specific dishes we cooked, but also on Thai cuisine fundamentals, ingredients, and main tastes. He also shared some cool cooking tips we found useful though we are not cooking beginners. We ended up with a plentiful freshly made Thai dinner consisting of Tom Yum soup with Shrimp, Fried Fish in Tamarind sauce, Thai Red Curry Chicken, and sticky rice. All the dishes came out delicious and tasted like in a Thai restaurant! And most important we've successfully reproduced these dishes at home one week later! Thank you John, and The HCNY Crew for the great experience! We highly recommend Home Cooking NY to all who likes and learns to cook!
