Had a lot of imported Asian snacks that aren't always available in the Asian markets. They had different Lay's and Kit Kat flavors. Kids and adults loved this store when we stopped in and we all got something. FYI there is a minimum purchase to use a card, but that shouldn't be a problem here :) read more

Sweet stop with a nice variety of gummy candies and dried fruit. We weren't planning on buying candy, but the lingering noise from new years poppers and firecrackers attracted us. The store is pretty compact, but clean and pretty nicely organized. There's a great variety to pick through here, with candy/fruit sold by the pound and a few prepackaged snacks/chips as well. The candy is $7/half pound. I love sour candy, so we loaded up on all the flavors of sour strips. Everything tasted great (though maybe on the tougher, chewier side). The candy is packaged in a plastic bag and then nested inside another paper bag with handles when you check out, which I appreciated. My only comment is that it can get a little crowded, but people enter and leave pretty quickly. read more

Aji Ichiban was THE place to get your fix of [east] Asian candy, from white rabbit to Hi-Chews, until they closed recently, leaving a hole in the market for a shop dedicated just to candy in Chinatown. Enter, Sugar Town, so aptly named for the goods that lie inside this tiny store. You can grab a clear baggy and go to town on the numerous gummies and sour straws they have in bulk, or check out their well stocked shelves. It's difficult to have breadth with such a small storespace, so there's a lot they don't carry that even HK Supermarket up the street will stock. I visited to stock up on things to decorate a gingerbread house with recently and left with my fill of pocky sticks, white rabbit, gummies, and haw flakes (IYKYK). I'm glad to have a place to shop for Asian sweets when the need strikes. read more

They have such a large selection of dried plums and candies! Sugar Town reminds me a little bit of Aji Ichiban, which used to be my go-to spot for buying dried goods. I brought a bunch of different plums for X to try, as he can't remember which ones he used to like. Prices were fair and cheaper than what I was expecting. So many great candies from my youth including White Rabbits, coconut candy, haw flakes, preserved plums. It was awesome. Plus there's all your regular favorite candies to choose from. I would definitely recommend and absolutely come back. read more

New candy/dried goods shop in Chinatown! They have a bunch of different candy, gummies, dried plums, chips, and other Asian snacks. I was pretty sad when aji ichiban closed but this is the new snacks/dried goods spot. The prices are pretty steep for some of the chips but they have very unique ones! They even have the chocolate tapioca candy that I've seen on social media! They have ginger candy, dried plums, prunes, and fish snacks. No samples as far as I know but you can fill out the bag yourself and they will weigh it. read more

I've been looking for this black sugar ginger snack for a few months after a friend had me try some from China. I had asked if they sell black sugar ginger at the store since Feb. They had 7 other flavors of ginger instead. It's now the end of May and they finally have it. Prices are a bit steep but finding another store like this after the pandemic is hard. Most stores closed permanently--even Aji Ichiban closed on Mott St. Bought a little over a pound and it cost $14+. But I'm enjoying snacking on it after hunting it down for nearly a year. The website printed on the bag does not work. Someone needs to work on that. read more

I came here for the dried and preserved plums. They had a good selection of different flavors. They were willing to mix and match. I got 1 lbs mixed from different bins and 1 1/2. Lb pre-packaged one. The price was good comparing to the prepackaged ones in the Chinese supermarkets. The dried plums were very large and those were good. It might be because of the low turnover, they didn't taste fresh. Don't get me wrong, the products were NOT bad but I expected better from thus type of specialty stores. This place popped up fairly recently, either that or I'm blind since it's right next to home. Missed it the first time since they close at 5 but came there the next day to check it out. Have the standard collection of candy at fairly reasonable prices. Assortment of Chinese candy as well. Japanese snacks are in stock but oh my god the prices on some of the chips or Kit Kat's. 9 dollars for a bag of green tea Kit Kat's. 5 dollars for a tiny bag of chips. I don't see how they can stay in business with that type of pricing. Another thing is the candy is self serve which is fine but there's no instructions on what to do with the used tongs after selecting what you want. My main issue with the store which almost prevented me from going is that there are 2 ladies that work there and they give you the stare down the moment you look into the store and the whole time you browse. Its been dead inside the whole time I've passed by so I'm wondering why there are 2 workers there. It's hard sell over the other candy store near Rivington. My advice if the business owner sees this. Hire someone who's more approachable. Adjust the prices on some of the snacks. There are Japanese chips that are hard to find here that my girlfriend enjoys but 5 bucks is super steep for a bag container 65g of chips. Will totally come back again if there was a scale to weigh out candy instead of a guessing game and would go there weekly for those chips if they were a little lower. read more

Great selection of mainstream candy and then amazingly fun Asian candy selections that are fun to try even if not all fun to eat - that is a big part of the experience for our family. Highlight of our trip for my 12-year old who enjoyed trying all the new candies as well as the old gummy staples. read more

Went there for the first time last week. Pretty happy that chinatown has a replacement for aji ichiban. Selections are much smaller but has most of the normal stuff to be expected just not enough variety. Only thing I dont like is no taste testing. When I found out AiIchiban was closed, I was very sad because that was one of my stops in China Town when I flew into NYC. I was so happy to find Sugar Town, it is like a little AiIchiban but I found mostly everything there.
