It's been my go-to place for Chinese baked goods whenever I'm in Chinatown but honestly, it's rather average, or mid (as the kids say). I'm just here often due to location, convenience, and familiarity. It's a popular hangout spot for older folks, since they've got a bunch of booth seating tables inside. They do have bo-lo cha-siew baos here (pineapple flaked bbq pork buns) here, although you do need to ask specifically for them. Otherwise, it's mostly the standard Chinese pastries. Not the worst but not the best either, and it's slightly more expensive than you'd expect from a place like this. I usually try to wait until there's an older Chinese lady to serve me, since the younger ones seem ruder and more impatient (which is typical HK behavior), but speak to them in Cantonese and they'll lighten up a bit. Otherwise, I'd recommend if you want some basic and decent Chinese baked foods. read more

Lucky King Bakery's Chinese name, 雙喜大餅家 on their awning translates to "Double Happiness Big Pastry Family" and is a reasonable description. You usually walk out of here with a big smile and loaded up with pastries. They are located more on the fringe of Chinatown and we don't come here as often as other more centrally located bakeries. But when we hike it to Trader Joe's, LKB is conveniently located along the way. It does get busy here in the mornings and it's sometimes a free-for-all. Typical Chinatown with no lines and no manners with people yelling their orders even though you've been patiently waiting. If you're in luck, one of the servers spots you and put in your order only if you know what you want. If you don't know what you want and dawdle, they will move onto the next person, so be ready. I get my usual supply of bao for breakfast during the week with a mix of ham & egg, char siu, hot dog and they also have the scallion, bacon, hot dog star bao here. You can also order dim sum to go or to sit and eat at the fast food style all-in-one tables & seats. The steamed har gao and siu mai are OK, but what they excel at are the fresh made rice rolls that you can get with beef or shrimp. I haven't tried the other varieties yet, but I'm sure we'll be back at some time to do so. read more

I got one of their birthday cakes, it was $32 (total steal for the size and quality ) for the size. The sponge was moist, and the filling was delicious. one of those classic cakes from the Chinese bakery. The staff even redecorated the cake with a new batch of fruit. Came in here to order food for the office. Service is good. I came in around 7-8am. Not too busy. And found street parking. Ordered a lot. Overall taste is decent. The steam bun with meat inside is just ok. The sticky/sweet rice is meh. The fried shrimp roll and all the dumpling dishes are decent. Nothing really stands out though. Service is fast. I come here pretty regularly, at least once a week to get some of their dim sum offerings. I usually get congee, a steamed bun, or some steamed rice rolls (cheung fun). The quality of everything is pretty average, at best, and most are below average. The fillings or the meat that they put in the congee, buns, or other dim sum dishes are not the best quality. It's usually the fatty trimmings. I still go because of its convenience. Every time I go, the bakery staff behind the counters have the worst attitude. It doesn't matter how I speak to them either in English or Cantonese, they just have a way of showing they are just so unhappy working there. The ambiance is your middle of the road Chinese bakery place with small seats and shared tables. It's a Sunday afternoon and while some people religiously go to church every week, I would go and visit my grandma. When I was younger, I would always catch a bite with my grandparents at a local dim sum spot that they're familiar with. But over the years, I have been buying their favorite food and bringing it over instead. In Chinatown, it's definitely getting more and more popular for locals to stop by Chinese bakeries and try out affordable eats like buns, pastries, milk tea, dim sum, etc. One of these amazing spots that have been here for some time is the Lucky King Bakery. Since it was late afternoon, I knew that my grandma has eaten lunch already so I went to look for something sweet that she liked. Luckily, the bakery had our favorite that day--black sesame roll, something we used to eat as a dessert after eating dim sum. As a side note, this delicacy is not made every day and when it is available, it would usually have a limited quantity; once it's sold out, it's out. This sesame roll has a gelatinous consistency to it. The sweetness is balanced, not too much and not too little, enough where it brings out the blended black sesame flavor. Some people eat as it is-- in its rolled form. But as a child, and even now, I would unravel the roll and eat it like a strip. Call me a child, but eating it this way is not only nostalgic but also gives a different texture than eating it as a roll. Besides this, they also serve lots of other amazing Chinese dim sum food-to-go, pastries, bread/buns, etc. But of course, I highly recommend trying this black sesame roll, (and maybe also eating it my way?). read more

Okay, I've been to this establishment about four times since I've been living in NYC. I can't ever say that I've been unhappy with the food. At most, I can say some of the dumplings I've ordered were a bit underwhelming. Not anywhere close to bad. Here's the thing. When you work anywhere that you're serving food. It's really important to make sure you give a person what they've ordered. I was really hungry when I got here because I hadn't eaten since around 10:00 am and it was 4:00pm. I stopped off to see what dim sum they had left. Now something I should speak to here that I normally don't know in reviews when I'm in Chinatown. Something that happens often enough that I'm not crazy about but I deal with because it's not my community, a Chinese guy came in just after me sidled up to the counter next to me and gave his order in Chinese. Of course, they took his order before mine. Although I was there first. This happens. I'm not crazy about it but like I said I was hungry. Here's what I have an issue with. I ordered pork with chive dumplings. Something I've ordered before. I pointed to the label. The woman that was taking my order apparently could not hear me. She asked me to repeat myself. I gave my order again. I pointed to the label and asked if there were any left? She got it slightly wrong. At that point. The Chinese guy that was standing next to me answered her back in Cantonese, which I do not speak. At this point she went back to the steamer. She put my order in a container took my money. And put the order in the bag. Thank God I didn't attempt to eat this until I got home. I took one bite and realized she gave me shrimp instead of what I asked for which was pork. Now before you say that the guy next to me was "just trying to be helpful" or "maybe she just didn't understand your English". I'm sure that both of those things are true, but neither relieve the business from the liability of serving a customer what they've ordered. It hasn't been an issue before. I didn't need an interpreter before. But because the lady behind the counter chose to listen to someone that wasn't placing the order instead of me, I could have died. Now, there are certain biases that came into place with this like the fact that this person was male and also Chinese. these are the same biases that came into play when this man's order was taken before mine. That was obnoxious but it wasn't deadly. What followed next was. I was the person ordering the food. I was the person paying for the food and I was the person that could have died if I had eaten that on the train. Luckily, I was able to get to my EpiPen in enough time not to go into acute anaphylactic shock. However, if I had been someone else, perhaps someone born with more privilege the business would have been sued for what happened to me. Trust and believe. If you don't know what a person is saying, have somebody else that's working for your business interact with customers. If you cannot converse in the language; then you should accommodate for that by maybe making an order form in the dominant language of the country. read more

The service was quick but it will be hard to order food if you're not able to read Chinese. The menu does not have an English translation. However, if you come during lunch hours there may be one or two people who can translate the menu for you! The ambiance of this bakery is loud and full of people, but that's normal. Egg tart: 1/5 I would not order this again. There was no flavor and the texture was not consistent: Pineapple bun: 1/5 this was decent, but you could probably find better around the corner. The breading was a bit dry which makes me think it's been sitting out for awhile. Dim Sum: Pork: 3/5 flavor is there and they give you a good amount, but the food was a bit cold. Shrimp noodles: 4:/5 this was my favorite dish next to the pork bun. It's simple, yet delicious! Fried sticky rice: 1/2 don't order this. It's bland and barely has any add ons. There was maybe 3 peas in the whole bowl. Taro bun: 2/5 I wish this bun was warm as it would have been much tastier. My favorite places to eat in Chinatown are those old fashioned hole in the wall places and this place definitely fit that vibe. However the dimsum at this place is one of the worst I've ever came across. Shumai was dry and taste like it's been sitting out for days. I came here on a whim so I was not entirely sure what their specialties may be or what is most popular, so I pointed to a few things I wanted from what was left in the afternoon. I always stop by here to get some baked goodies. What stands out in this bakery (other than their pork buns) is that it's a pretty big space with plenty of seating. The chairs look like their made for toddlers (could be the fun colors and shape) but the seats are really comfortable! Most bakeries in Chinatown are tiny and if there's even 1-2 tables to sit on, well, that's rare. It seems like they like to rotate some baked goods. I don't come here that often, usually every 3-6 months. They always do have their 'staple' goods, both savory and sweet, so it's a good thing. I always grew up going to Chinatown with Mott St. being the end all and be all. I ask the lady behind the counter about the different types of cakes and the poor girl is struggling with her limited English. My friend decided to play it safe and get the vanilla cake with sprinkles. I decide to do the same and get two of the chocolate cakes. One looked like a chocolate base cake with white powder dusted on top and the other looked like a mocha cake, nothing out of the ordinary. BUT. IT. WAS. Powder cake was fine. Nothing peculiar. Nothing odd. The other one was not mocha. Idk wtf it was but it had a very bad bitter taste. Not a coffee flavor. IT LOOKED SO NORMAL?! I offer it to my friend, she has a few bites. So I'm thinking, oh you like it. Great have it. She declines politely. That was the first time I've ever thrown out cake.. I'm traumatized. Point is, I think this is one of those restaurants where you have to know what you're getting. Go with an Asian friend who is familiar with the food who can guide you accordingly. Randomly stumbled upon this place when I was on a hunt for don tat's and all the nearby bakeries were closed. They serve standard chinese bakery drinks, buns and dimsum in the back. There was a small wait but it moved pretty quickly. I came by around 6pm on a Tuesday night and walked out with 5 dimsum dishes, 2 don tat's, 2 cha siu bao's and a pineapple bun for $15!!!!!! This is insanely cheap!! I even confirmed with the lady all that was $15! The only downside is their dimsum menu is in chinese so I had pull out my very limited chinese to order what I knew for the dimsum dishes. Practicing my chinese for my next visit here! read more

This might by my new favorite Chinese bakery in chinatown. What sets them apart is their custard filled mochi. Two of my favorite things which somehow work well together. It's the only place I've found that makes them. They also have some steamed dim sum dishes so you get your protein and carbs all in one spot. I came away with an entire meal for $7.50. I don't usually walk east of Chrystie Street while I'm in Chinatown, but I decided to be a little adventurous. Plus, I was hungry. Hungry + adventurous = Chinatown success story. I see Lucky King Bakery and I think a lot of Chinatown bakeries can be hit or miss, but with a 4 star rating on Yelp, I entered. I quickly realized the Lucky King was not your ordinary bakery. Sure, they have attractive slices of cake, egg custard tarts, etc. However, they take it another step further with...DIM SUM. Yeah, behind the bakery display are heated trays filled with fong jao (chicken feet), siu mai, cheung fun, etc. Now, I'm a hungry girl, so I decide to go for a couple of items here. I ordered a shrimp cheung fun, a ham siur gok, a wu tao gok, and some strange looking fried thing that I'll explain in a minute. Cheung fun: Eh, it looked better than it tasted. The rice roll noodles were actually well made, but the shrimp was a little mealy. Next time, I'd order it with beef. Strange looking fried thing: This turned out to be a sticky rice ball with quail egg, mushroom, and chicken that had been breaded and deep fried. The breading was a little sweet and not too greasy. The rice was well seasoned and flavored. I'd actually order this $1.25 gut bomb again. Ham siur gok: Really well filled! Few things are sadder than a ham siur gok with little filling, but this had plenty. The slightly weird thing was that the filling had some kind of shredded pork and not bbq pork. Wu tao gok: This is basically a fried taro monstrosity. I love these things, but this was massive. I could only eat half, but I certainly got my money's worth (I think this was only $0.75). All four food items plus a bottle of sweetened soy milk only cost me $5.80 and I couldn't even finish it all. I was a happy girl when I left Lucky King. read more
