Not what they used to be anymore. My family used to buy cakes from them for every birthday event. They used to taste good, but now, it feels like they're overpriced due to their past awards and the cake tastes as if it's out of a cake box you get at the grocery store. I don't like their icing options since they're all buttercream varieties really (very heavy) and not as much flavor options to mix and match with. Cakes are too rich and heavy. The fillings are their best part, but it isn't worth the icing and cake part. There's better bakeries that make tastier cakes at lower costs. Sugar Bakers made our wedding cake and groom's cake for our wedding on 9/7/19 in Harford County. I am so pleased with them and we had no cake left over because people went for seconds and thirds!! I thought we would have to spend an arm and a leg, but Sugar Bakers is so resonably priced! They told us not to freeze our top tier because they will provide us with a top tier at our 1 year anniversary for free! All cake toppers were from Etsy, but I told Sugar Bakers my vision and my husband's and they did not disappoint! Everyone at the shop was extremely helpful and the cake tasting was wonderful! SugarBakers made our wedding cake and I am not the only one obsessed with it... our guests are still raving about it! We held our reception at Hunt Valley Country Club in September and were informed that the venue and SugarBakers have a partnership so we had the option to order the cake through them. We were thrilled to hear this because we knew that SugarBakers was one of the few bakeries in the DMV that can make a Smith Island flavored cake. The cake itself was so appealing to look at and I still can't get over how delicious it was. Although this was a while ago, I wanted to place a review on this place. I got my wedding cake from SugarBakers back in 2017 (the picture is just the top portion, I will find one of the whole cake later). The cake was an Amaretto cake with Raspberry filling and a French buttercream and it was the highlight of our wedding. The taste is unforgettable, buttery, sweet, and subtle. The decorations were beautiful, and the service at the bakery was excellent. Sugar bakers made a pretty cake for approximately 75 people and also two sheets of the cake for the guests; they were accommodating in this request and it brought down the price of the cake. Sugar bakers made my wedding cake and it was a total hit! The staff is so friendly. We did cake tastings at 3 bakeries and Sugar Bakers won in every aspect. They started promptly. They give small slices of all their cake flavors and samples of each of the buttercreams along with several fillers. It was organized so cute on the platter. It might be the moistest and most flavorful cake I've ever eaten! They let you pick a different flavor for each layer if you want also. We hardly had any cake left over at the wedding. It was so good several people wanted extra slices. The best part is you don't have to even think about eating gross, year old cake from the freezer on your 1 year anniversary. When you buy a cake from them they bake you a fresh top layer in the flavor of your choice. Just call 2 weeks before your anniversary date. Their other desserts look delicious too. I have ordered from Sugar Bakers for years. They did wedding cakes, birthday and cupcakes for both my business and personally. Recently my daughter was turning one so I told my wife to contact Sugar Bakers and have them make two cakes for the party. She contacted Sugar Bakers and designed two cakes. One for my daughter to smash and the other to serve. My wife was very specific about what she wanted due to an allergy of my daughters. The Thursday before the party, my wife sent me to pick up the cake and bring it to the beach for my daughter's birthday party on Saturday. My wife asked me to send her a pic of the cake, which I did. This is when I became aware of the problem. The cake was supposed to be chocolate and it was not. My wife called Sugar Bakers who said they could not help us and could not make a new cake on short notice. My wife was disappointed and would like to speak to a manager. No manager was available and they would have someone contact us immediately. Nobody called us back all day. The next day no one from Sugar Bakers called either. My wife called again and was told a manager lived in Delaware and would get back to us again. Again we never heard back from them. My wife followed up yet again and was once again given the same runaround. To this date we neve heard back from anyone at Sugar Bakers. My daughter's birthday was amazing despite the disappointment of having the wrong cake. The smash cake which was also wrong was fine as far as smash cakes go....The cake we served was overly sweet and the bottom layer was stale. Needless to say the cake was barely eaten and deposited into the trash after the party. In the end we would have been better off making our own cake or going to Harris Teeter. Mistakes happen but ignoring the problem does not make things better. Between the horrific customer service and the poorly made product we would not recommend Sugar Bakers. read more

This is a nice dessert shop located in Frederick road. It's right in between the fire station and where friendley's used to be if you're familiar with Frederick road. I usually come here for the dessert bars. My favorite here is definitely the brookie which is a combination of a brownie and cookie. It tastes amazing and definitely will satisfy your sugar craving if you have any. I've also had the peanut butter bar, cherry cheesecake bar, and pecan pie bar. Only one I wasn't a fan of was the peanut butter bar. Didn't taste as peanut buttery as I expected. The cheesecake as pecan pie bars were good. Oh and I believe all the bars are $2 each. They also have other desserts like cupcakes, cannolis, cake slices and full cakes. The only cake I've had here was the pumpkin cheesecake they have during thanksgiving which was really good. I would rate that a 4/5 as well. Probably my favorite dessert place in catonsville. You should definitely give this place a chance. read more

The snickerdoodle cake was excellent! Very moist and tasted just like carrot cake but without the carrots. My order was accommodated 3 days before I picked it up which was very nice of the employees since you have to call 7 days in advance to get an order made. I ordered it for my nephews birthday. Parking wasn't too bad. I parked in a lot right across the street from the store. The lot was free so I had no troubles. There's also street parking but it's very minimal. I highly recommend this bakery if you live in Baltimore or Howard County. My nephew lives in Baltimore County so it was easy to order the cake and drop it it off to him for his birthday. read more

Sugar Bakers has been my "go-to" bakery since moving to Baltimore from California in 2013. For my very first Adult Birthday party; I wanted to go all in and over the top! Red is my absolute favorite color and I fell in love with the cake on the LEFT when I saw it on Pinterest. I asked Sugar Baker's Cakes to mimic the cake but to just do it with 2 tiers. I picked up the cake on the day of my party and my heart was crushed when I saw the reddish-orange fondant with the gold embellishments. I told the manager that this looks NOTHING like the red I requested and she insisted on trying to convince me that it was. Hurt and completely upset, I did everything to keep my composure and articulate that I was completely disappointed and did not like the subdued red. I wanted a rich RED like the photo. You can clearly see the richness of the red as there is no contrast between the red roses. The manager kept insisting it WAS THE SAME RED and said "I'm sorry you're not happy but your remaining balance is...". It was only after I kept insisting that it was NOT the same RED that the manager finally admitted that it was the best they could do. That would've been an appropriate answer instead of initially trying to convince me that it was the "same red". When they realized they were unable to get the color to match the Rich Red as depicted in the photo, they should've called me to let me know. But no, they proceeded and tried to make me feel like I was in the wrong for being disappointed with the final product. Again, the manager reminded me of my remaining balance and offered nothing to mitigate the problem other than saying "I'm sorry you're not happy with the cake". Paying $400+ for a cake that you're NOT satisfied with is just unacceptable. Shame on Sugar Bakers! I paid the balance, got my cake, and left. Albeit, ill never ever do business with this establishment again. I will NEVER EVER purchase another cake from Sugar Bakers. If you like cake-- and I mean good cake-- you must go to SugarBakers. They have a decent selection of pastries to-go such as pound cake, cookies, tarts, cake slices and pies; however, they do really nice cakes for events and celebrations. On this particular visit, I went for a slice of Smith Island, Amaretto Raspberry and a Strawberry Mousse Tart. Both cakes were moist, not too dense and the frosting:cake ratio was awesome! I also love the frosting on the Amaretto Raspberry-- not like your typical buttercream but much smoother. The strawberry mousse tart was not my fave as the crust was way too hard to cut through. Absolutely fantastic! And I bake! I've bought the lemon, decadent chocolate and raspberry/almond cake so far. Loved them all (though the almond could do with more almond flavour). Their prices are very reasonable, given that the 10" cake is really TALL, and would easily serve 14-16 people. Unlike supermarket cakes, they are not cloyingly sweet, and the frosting is never gritty (which usually means that there is waay too much confectioner's sugar to butter ratio.) More like European-style bakeries. LOVE this place. read more

I am so disappointed with the custom service. I emailed sugar bakers on May 11 to place an order for my son's graduation party in June, making sure the bakery had plenty time for the order. I gave her all of the details of what I wanted and we went back and forth with several emails. At that time I asked if I could place the order and pay for it. I was told to call two weeks prior. Well, life happen and I called 1 week and two days prior to the party, not exactly two weeks ahead of the date. These were her exact words, "I can't help you because I needed exactly two weeks."I was several days shy of a two week window. I said that I emailed you at the beginning of may to place my order and pay for it. She said, "I don't know what to tell you, I guess you will have to call around and see if someone can do it!" As I was waiting for my food at Umami, I decided to stop by here and even though it wasn't in my bookmarks, it looked really tasty. And it helps being right next to the Firehouse. Why? I don't know why, it just felt that way! I felt... Safer... From their parfaits to the homemade brownies and made from scratch cakes. They all looked divine. I'm a sucker for brownies and have been trying to find a Good Cannoli. I tried Cannoli in numerous restaurants and bakeries and was never satisfied, till I came here. I got 2 Peanut Butter Fudge brownies, 1 Strawberry Cheescake brownie/cookie thing, and a Cannoli. The description says "bars" not brownies but I just call em brownies anyways. Though when I took a bite of the PBF brownie, the texture wasn't of a brownie, it was instead more like a crumb cake with chocolate on top. At first the PB was subtle and tasted good but after chewing for a bit, the sweetness of the brownie punches you right in the face! It was SO GOOD! I loved how the texture was different from your usual brownie and that the taste. Tasted. Tasty! I washed it down with a cup of water. Not the best combo but it helped a lot. I then had the Cannoli. I wasn't a big fan of all those little chocolate pieces but it definitely added texture to the soft and creamy, not too heavy cream inside perfectly. Each bite I took, I took my time because it was lovely. Their cheesecake brownie was alright. Not enough cream cheese. The woman there, I'm guessing the owner? From start to finish my experience with SugarBakers was great. I heard from a friend that these guys were amazing. They designed her wedding cake and I needed a cake for my sister's baby shower. I wanted something that wasn't shaped like...a diaper or a shoe, or anything remotely babyish, since I was going for classy instead of BABY!. Since I live out of state, I was worried they wouldn't allow me to order it, but I guess since it was a sheet cake, they did. I sent them a design that I wanted copied onto the cake and was advised that piping the design would look nicer than copying it onto the actual cake. It was a pink toile design and I was a little worried that I would end up with a cake that had squiggles all over it, since I wasn't sure how they would replicate toile. I ordered the German Buttercream frosting with chocolate cake and chocolate toffee mousse - turns out this was an amazing combination. Everything was done via phone and web and Mike (the manager) could not have been any more helpful. He helped me decide on flavors and was very patient in answering all of my questions. I picked up the cake and they were on time, the cake was very fresh and everyone loved the design! I will definitely be ordering from SugarBakers again! read more

This place screams tacky wedding cake shop.....maybe because it is? Not that there is anything wrong with that, cake is tasty and I could care less what it looks like as long as it tastes heavenly. Staff always seems rather apathetic, which is a bummer. Cakes and sweet things should make you sugar highed and happy all the time. I think? The cool thing about this place is that you can buy cake by the slice.....and they have SMITH ISLAND CAKE....the signature 50% fudgey icing 50% betty crocker style yellow cake. They do charge more for a slice of Smith Island than they do for any other cake slice, but every once in a while it is worth going for. This is the first time I've tried SugarBakers. You need to order a cake a full 7-days in advance, FYI. I was able to order the cake over the phone, which was so convenient! I bought a 10" Smith Island Cake using a groupon & just recited the groupon number to the sales rep. The cake was towering & huge! It was most delicious on the date of pickup. The cake boxes are not suited to seal contents or act as protective enclaves - just to keep wind, bugs, or rain off the cake during transport. We should have transferred the cake to a glass domed cake display to keep it fresh but alas we did not. It was placed in our extra refrigerator inside its cake box without plastic or wax wrap over it, which I think shortened its freshness shelf life. The Smith Island cake is so rich that a small slice will satisfy. It has peanut butter cups mixed in there somewhere, so we could taste peanut butter in the aftertaste. It was a treat to try it for the first time. We are amateur bakers ourselves & so are more picky about baked goods than many people. We found the Smith Island Cake to be rich for our tastes but enjoyed the chance to sample it. The frosting was superior to many other bakeries. SugarBakers is part of an awesome wedding. And our wedding was pretty awesome -- complete with perfect Fall weather and views of turning foliage, a rockin' karaoke DJ, and an open bar -- so the cake had some pretty tough competition for attention. But not only was the cake eff-delicious when we finally got to cut into it, it was just lovely, and fit the bride's decor of the reception to a T. (Yes, this is the groom writing, and I just raved about our lovely cake.) See the photo. SugarBakers also came through for us on short notice. We had other cake arrangements that fell through just a few weeks before the wedding, naturally sending my wife into a sub-nuclear freakout, but soon we had an appointment for a tasting at the bakery, and the girl we met with was calm, kind, and helpful. I just called to arrange ours for next week (I'm a little late), and there was no hassle, no paperwork to dig through, just told them who I was and picked the flavor. But if you do go home with some of your cake to stick in the freezer, it will probably be delicious for many months to come. We had our entire topper left, hogging up space in our freezer from October till June, when the massive "derecho" storm hit DC and knocked out our power for days. After 2 days we started tossing everything in the fridge/freezer, and thought what the hell, let's have cake for dinner. Standing in our sweltering, candle-lit apartment in minimal clothing, we tore into the still-cold raspberry-amaretto cake with French buttercream frosting and it was amazing.
