We made our way to Catonsville on a super cold winter morning to try this bakery. It was busy but not over-crowded with folks so we snagged a table and tried several bakery items and I had a hot tea. I'd go hungry - and try a few things. We enjoyed most everything, but I will say what dropped this a star was the fact that I was so excited for the biscuit and jam, and unfortunately it tasted burnt. It wasn't visibly burnt so I didn't say anything, but the taste was just off. If I find myself back there I won't be going for that - but will seek out some other treats for sure! read more

Love love love this bakery!! The vintage feel makes it so fun, and even has a little play area in the back for kids. The staff is so nice and patient when you're trying to decide how to narrow down your choices and not get one of everything. The baked goods that I've tried are all delicious! The old fashioned donuts have a crisp on the outside and soft on the inside...hard to put them down!! The buns are delectable (I have a sweet sweet tooth, so beware if you like your sweets actually sweet!). Handpies and croissants were also delish!!! 6.11.23 A cute and quaint bakehouse in Catonsville that gives you a good feeling from the minute you pull up to the door. Loved the ambience, which had unique and antiquated decor and tchotchkes. Being there made me feel nostalgic of my childhood. Highly recommend their breakfast sammies and lemonade! Hubby and I split our sammies so we could sample each. I preferred the Wakey Wakey Eggs N Bakey (with bacon) whereas the hubs preferred the Ohl MacDonald (with ham and pepper jelly). He liked the jelly in it. The biscuits were toasted and crispy, which we liked. We got the Went to Hell Cake Slice to go. It was chocolaty, creamy, and moist. It was more like I died and went to heaven. He said that they could use another staff member at the counter. It appeared one person was at the register and running into the kitchen. There is metered street parking, but if there aren't any spaces there is a lot nearby at the Catonsville Square for those of us such as myself who can't parallel park. I went in with Child #1 to try out some of the yummy baked goods. The inside is a bit hipster-y and the staff are dressed like old time soda jerkers. It gives a cool vibe, I guess. There are loads of baked goods, mostly pastries, to choose from. We opted for a croissant and a donut, both of which were great. I also got one of their sandwiches, the "Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?" sandwich. It had a delicious buttery and flaky biscuit and good filling of cheese, sausage, and arugula. This is a VERY CUTE vintage cafe and bakery! The food is delicious, I enjoyed eating the Hippie Sammie. The staff are so kind and welcoming. This is a great place to catch up with friends or work on your dissertation in a cozy, relaxing cafe. The bathroom is clean and organized. There is plenty of parking available in the adjacent lot. Awesome new bakeshop in Catonsville well not new, this baker has been a farmers market favorite for a while. Got to try two sandwiches and really enjoyed them. Note: This is for a specific experience WITH Charlsies, not their daily product or service offerings. I'm a regular at Charlsies, a local. I've been supporting their business since they opened, at times, too enthusiastically. I've stuck with them during many changes as they are nice people and make a great product. But, not everyone is cut out for business, customers, expectations, etc. I recently tried to get a birthday cake made for my wife. I went into the shop one week ahead of time. The young woman at the counter recommended I contact Morgan. I did. We went back and forth over several days about what type of cake, etc. She never informed me she preferred email. She never suggested cake types she was willing to make. She never really confirmed, she'd be able to MAKE the cake. I got the impression, she wasn't interested in the order, which, I dig as it's not the CORE business. SO, I 'let her off the hook' and received an aggressive, nasty chat in return. Fine. See, customer service matters. You didn't like how I gave you the cake requirements? Then SAY something. It's YOUR business, not mine. Instead, you alienated and lost a long-time client. Again, some are good at business...some...and some become willing to drive a little farther for their baked goods. Update: Tried to 'resolve' this before I posted it....I didn't want to go slash and burn. But, after apologizing to me for the experience, she went on to slash and burn on the remainder of HER email. Great customer service. So....why do you bother responding to apologize and resolve an issue, then pour gasoline on it to inflame it? Shrug. read more

I've been meaning to write this for months now, but have been hesitant because I was worried I couldn't properly convey just how much I love Charlsie's. But you know what? Done is more important than perfect. I have the great pleasure of living very close to this delightful bake shop, which whips up an ever-changing menu of baked treats Thursdays through Sundays, often based on local, seasonal produce. While I haven't explored the sammies all that much, the sweets are just to die for. Morgan and her crew work tirelessly to hand craft wonderful treats and drinks and serve them up warmly, with a smile. The handpies are always winners - both sweet and savory. In fact; their pie crusts consistently knock it out of the park for me. I'm hooked on the chewy ginger cookies, key lime bars, and croissants. The seasonal raspberry and cream cheese danish were also just wonderful. From the wooden floors and tables to the blackboards and glass encasements it is the antithesis of the bland industrial food chain. Everything is made fresh on site. After seeing the reviews I decided to stop in and see what was on the menu and check out this cute bakery. It's a nice size place with outside meter parking. The inside is cute with a few booths and they have an array of baked goodies and pastries. I was greeted when I came in and service was quick. There was only one person in line ahead of me. As much as I wanted to grab a few things I decided to try the griddled cheese which is a biscuit that's supposed to have shallot jam, white cheddar and pimento cheese. My sandwich had no pimento cheese once I got home to try it. I lifted the biscuit to inspect and make sure i was not mistaken and I was disappointed. This was a $7 biscuit missing a key item and one of the only reasons I ordered it. If they were out of the item I would have rather been informed or I'm not sure if they forgot to put it on. The biscuit itself was tasty, sort of burnt at the bottom and the little bit of cheddar and jam that was on the biscuit gave it a sweet taste. It was okay, but I would not pay $7 again, I would however give them another shot and get something else due to them having a wide variety. read more

Charlsie's is an adorable hidden gem! The shop has a great vintage feel and lots of seating. The staff was so friendly and walked us through their menu. They have a variety of sweets and pastries, as well as sandwiches. We tried the fig and ham biscuit which was the perfect blend of sweet and savory, as well as the lamb hand pie which was delicious as well. Wasn't a fan of the sandwich or the service. The staff were friendly but seemed guarded. In comparison I saw a different more positive demeanor toward other patrons. The food wasnt great either. I ordered an ole mcdonald and it didnt look like other pictures from online. It had a lot of pan residue (black flakes) and the jam was barely there. I took two bites before throwing in the flag. Overall, it lacked flavor and the pan flakes were obviously unappetizing. I liked the donut though. I'm definitely not returning and I feel sad since I love local bakeries and their close by my house. read more

Totally infatuated with Charlsie's! Everything I have tasted has been 10/10. First taste was the Ol Macdonald, a rich and balanced biscuit sandwich with egg, ham, cheese and pepper jelly. And they aced my litmus test for a new bakery- the croissant. The ambiance is very warm and relaxed- a soulful mix of antiques, plants, beautiful solid wood furniture, classic music, and even a family dining area with toys for the little ones. The whole experience is perfection, from stepping in the door to enjoying our treats and leaving with a glow of delight. I am so thrilled to have a local spot that I love this much. Stopped our way to BWI. Handmade treats, excellent service, sweet atmosphere with vintage vibes. (Jadite! ) We spent about $30 for two sandwiches and three pastries. Sustainable-- cute dishes, flatware, and water mugs. We had the Old McDonald and the Cheese sandwich which were like panini made with biscuits. Delicious--buttery, crispy, and flavorful. Pretty pies and cakes. I tried going here again after a rather chaotic first visit earlier in the year thinking that maybe I had the misfortune of going on an "off" day. Unfortunately once again the ambience was very loud/crowded/chaotic. Staff seemed rushed and/or understaffed. Moreover on the "egg n cheese on a biscuit" Sammie I ordered the egg portion tasted like old/rancid cooking oil and had grey edges and the biscuit had black flecks I believe from the grill - idk, but not appetizing. I have had large holiday treats (southern Yule log, apple pie) from here and they were quite good. My suggestion is to get takeout and stick with the cakes/pies/sweets. read more

Such a cute place. After seeing the pics and reading the Yelp reviews, I became acutely aware, this should be my first stop, prior to heading to the farmer's market. I came here for the chocolate cake. In someone's Yelp review and picture shown, I knew then, there's absolutely nothing wrong with having cake for breakfast. No chocolate cake today, I was informed - but that is OK - within the glass cases, there seemed plenty of goodies to choose among. Decisions, decisions. My hubby asked for Ohl MacDonald and I opted for the special, pit bacon sandwich and an additional savory, pimento cheese hand pie. Breakfast sandwiches arrived on CB's rendition of their buttermilk biscuit - a flaky, buttery, hard vehicle, with black, burnt bacon and no discernable trace of pepper jelly. The pit bacon sandwich, a tasty pastrami grill uniqueness, was served on the same, inedible biscuit and the aioli spread didn't work for me; I suggest a fruity barbeque sauce instead, to elevate the flavors. The pimento cheese savory, was a disappointment as well, though buttery and flaky (which who doesn't love), it was also super greasy. I was equally underwhelmed with the shmear of pimento cheese filling. Along with my meal, I decided to try the herbal lemonade. I should have asked what type of herbs were used, since I was expecting lavender, basil or lemon balm. Unfortunately, my lovely, refreshing lemonade (definitely homemade) seemed to be infused with either rosemary or thyme and the flavors, so strong, made this appealing drink, less drinkable. I like Charlsie's Bakehouse. I had no intentions of visiting here however on my way out of Cross Street Market I passed by this place and was pretty intrigued by the homey, rustic appearance looking in from the hallway corridor. Immediately I recognized the sliced cake showcase and of course I had purchase the chocolate cake called "Went to Hell and Back" and carrot cake "Hummingbird" for me and the Key Lime Bars for my wife. All three were very good and it is obvious this place uses homestyle ingredients and traditional baking methods which I like. Some places are heavy on the sugar when it comes to baked goods but this place understands the importance of spice combinations to bring out natural, subtle flavors. Everything was rich in flavor however not overpowering or excessive which is a turnoff when it comes to baked goods. Overall a very good bakeshop for small, single serving and small batch baked goods. Next time I visit Cross Street Market I will pay them a visit and after trying more baked goods and interacting with the staff I'll consider upping the rating to a 5 star which currently doesn't seem out of reach. read more
