I love the breadery! I've been eating their bread for years from various restaurants throughout town, but had never actually been to the breadery location until this week. I was immediately impressed and overwhelmed with the shear amount of options in their establishment. They not only have bread and pastries, but they also have coffee, frozen pizzas, wine and spirits, local cheeses, and a large selection of olive oils, vinegars, and balsamics. I picked up a challah bread, baguette, lemon rosemary sourdough, pumpkin chocolate muffin, two mini blueberry scones, a 4 pack of a locally owned, women owned canned cocktail I like, and a cup of coffee all for about $30. Wanted to take a nice walk about two weeks ago (lagging on reviews again, sigh) and found the #9 Trolley Line that runs from Ellicott City to Catonsville (or vice versa, more on this). Approximately halfway from either town is this delightful bakery that isn't just a bakery. As many have said, the aroma alone can make your mouth water - and we arrived midday, so I can only imagine what it's like early in the morning, when the baked goods are just coming out of the oven. They close at 2 on Saturdays, and we just made it by 1:30. Along with breads, rolls, and cookies, there are spreads both sweet and savory, dipping oils and vinegars, plus herb mixtures to sprinkle on them. I didn't investigate the wines but could easily see it's quite a collection. I missed the cheeses somehow, but DD the Cheese Queen said it was a nice assortment. There is also a cooler with soft drinks, so DGD got a berry lemonade & DD a kombucha. I bought a fresh loaf of garlic parmesan bread, and a loaf of cranberry orange pecan bread that was only $4! I see that another reviewer said the cheap loaves are due to the slicer mangling the loaf, but not the one I bought! It was perfect & just a couple of days old. Used to be you could go to most local bakeries & buy day old bread much cheaper. Anyway, even if it was "mangled" it still has amazing flavor and texture - worth every penny even at full price. DGD got a chocolate croissant and a banana muffin. She graciously let me have a taste and both were delicious. There is a free parking lot, which we didn't use of course, as we were walking. I wanted to write about the #9 Trolley Line but yelp doesn't have trail reviews (oversight!!) So I'm just going to add a little info here that does not pertain to The Breadery. Here are a couple of tips if you're doing the #9 Trolley Line walk: First and foremost, I highly recommend doing the uphill part first. In other words, start in Ellicott City. We walked as far as The Breadery and back, which was around 1.5 miles. We were all thankful to be going downhill once we were carrying our goodies! However, there is a farmer's market on Saturdays from May-October and it's a very small downtown so parking is tricky. The lot for the trailhead had people circling for spots. We're going to do the other side next weekend, but starting at The Breadery & returning there. And to be perfectly honest, even though it's a bit of a drive, I will be coming to get fresh loaves at The Breadery a couple of times a month. read more

What an epic effing find after a long hike! If you're a bread lover, this place is a must-visit. As we neared the end of the trail, we could literally smell the irresistible aroma of freshly baked bread, drawing us in like a magnet--thankfully, it was far more inviting than the scent of the porta potties that was next door (hahaa, you've been warned)! Once inside, we were greeted by a delightful spread of everything you could imagine. There's wine, beer, syrups, jams, and an impressive selection of pastries, but the bread?! Longtime customer and appreciate bread made using milled flour onsite (used to be but unsure now), but new management has irritating practice of charging $4 for loaves that have been messed up on the slicing machine -- you're paying $4 for a bag of mangled bread. Walking down the Trolley Trail I exclaimed "That was a damn good muffin!" So friends, head to Ellicott City - get yourself on the Trolley Trail and walk to the Breadery for treats! Actually, probably just drive and use their parking lot so you can fill up on all the things. This place was adorable and has such a selection! Baked goods, breads, olive oils, cheese, wine, and beer are all available in their small store. The pumpkin pecan muffin was amazing - my only regret is not buying 6. The Breadery has been around since the late '90s and offers various types of bread, wine, beer, oil, vinegar, coffee, and tea. While in the area, I made a stop to pick up some of their baked goods - unfortunately, there wasn't much of a selection of the housebaked breads, so I'm thinking it's usually best to do an online order or call ahead if you're really in need of something particular. I instead opted for a few of their blueberry muffins, a sticky bun, and a scone. The muffin was saran-wrapped, and they were extremely dry - not sure if they were sitting out for a while or if that's what the bakery was going for. The sticky bun was also hard as a rock, and the scone was super dry & crumbly. Service wasn't too friendly, either, as the individual wasn't helpful at all; they gave off the impression that it was a pain to tend to any of the patrons and answer questions. Just an uncomfortable experience. I wish I had a tasty bakery experience as others have had; I'm glad I was able to check this place out, but would not return. COVID-era review: this weekend we hiked up the Trolley Trail with masks on (definitely required because you won't be able to maintain at least 6 feet from other parties at all times). We planned to stop at The Breadery to grab takeout for breakfast. It was the first weekend with more relaxed restrictions, so the Breadery was open for walk-ins. 5 customers in the store is the limit. They are still taking online orders for pickup too. The Breadery has a variety of breads and other baked goods (namely muffins and croissants) daily. They also offer other items (wine, oil, coffee), which I will have to try another time. I was impressed by the less-conventional, more exciting selection of muffins, which included: pumpkin pecan (seasonal), raspberry chocolate chunk, and pineapple coconut. I opted for a raspberry chocolate chunk muffin. The muffin had a very good distribution of large chunks of both raspberries and chocolate. I had eaten most of it before I remembered to take the picture, so it's mostly just to show the distribution. The muffin was slightly too dry and crumbly for my taste, but the flavors helped make up for it. Our family has gotten pumpkin bread (both with and without pecans) from them for a few years now. I have yet to try their other bread selections, for which I have heard positive feedback. Also please note that they do NOT offer fancier coffee beverages like lattes or cappuccinos. Why 4 stars? I won't go out of my way to go back whenever I am in town, but I know I can could count on them for a solid fare of bread and muffins if desired! This is a quaint little bakery, that is off the beaten path. My mom often frequents this business and the other day I was out with her and she wanted to stop by. I thought the place was really unique (many photos included). They sell fresh bread, wine, cheese, and a few other odds/ends. I only got to try the bread, but oh boy was it delicious. I've bought bread made by the Breadery at other markets, but Friday was the first time I ever made it into the shop. The place is a carb lover's dream. It's one of those spots that invites you to roam and look at the coffee, the olive oil or even a six-pack of local beer. The real star though is the bread of course. Simply put, their sourdough is the best I've ever had. It's a perfectly chewy, slightly salty bread that is perfect for every application. Their cinnamon swirl bread is much loved by the kids at home for its French toast qualities. After trying scones and baked goods from many other places, the scones here are dense by comparison. Muffins are good and basic, but definitely a bit too much sugar used. The bread is also loaded with more sugar than it needs. Products generally stick to your teeth like you might expect from candy/sugar. And a note about the customer service: 9 out of 10 times I'm in the store I do not feel welcome. Today a new face (younger girl) was very nice. But many other times, I've felt like I'm being judged the moment I walk in. The silent stares and transactional attitudes of many of the older women and even one of the late 20s woman I've come across all made me feel like I was merely being tolerated as a customer. read more

"Hidden Gem" that is a term that is used all too often. Fortunately, that term does apply to this establishment. I say establishment because it's been around for over 20+ years. Located in Baltimore County, just over the county line from Ellicott City, this is truly a find. Breads, muffins, cookies abound. Plus they have beers, wines, artisan olive oil and Zeke's coffee. When you are tired of the standard supermarket fare, and want a more refined, and elevated experience I recommend The Breadery. I also recommend going up with someone you care about, the drive up is wonderfully scenic, with views, and the drive itself (coming from EC) is twisty and fun. Today I was walking on the trail and discovered this place. Its a great location on the trail and has a table outside where you can eat what you bought. I got a goat cheese pastry and a loaf of walnut cinnamon raisin bread. The goat cheese pastry was really good. And we all loved the bread. Both were very fresh and delicious. The reason why I can't give it 5 stars is they don't have a restroom. Normally I would have washed my hands before eating a pastry, so I ended up not eating at their location and instead carried the bag down the trail roughly a mile to my car where I drove home and at it there. We moved from NorCal three months ago and were really missing SF sourdough bread. Their sourdough ( that they make upstairs) is delicious- sour that you can smell and taste; that chewy consistency and a great sour crust. Also picked up a Zin from Lodi CA that was inexpensive and delicious. Told the owner that I was looking for a Lugana white wine from northern Italy and he called the next day and said he found one and asked if I would like to have one put aside for me. Honestly, The Breadery reminds me of a neighborhood bakery like you would find in rural Italy. That is so rare in America, where nationwide chains are generally all that is available. Please don't be fooled by this horrible bakery. They do not know how to bake. The bread is horrendous and will crumble into bits if you try to eat it or make a sandwich. The muffins are worse than my 11 year old makes, but somehow his don't stick to the wrapper and break apart completely. I think other customers are fooled by the name and assume this must be good bread. It is not, it is horrible and nobody should buy from here. When the Breadery used to be located off of Route 40, it was a better place than what it is now. Seriously, is it THAT rare to see a big Asian man SMILING?! Does THAT intimidate you?! I came in with my sister and her boyfriend. Guess the woman that was standing on the side of the counter didn't realize the woman that came in after me was my sister and decided to say HI to them instead of me when I came in before them. She just looked at me with a blank face and said nothing yet my sister and boyfriend came in a second later and got a HI to them right in front of my face? I don't get it. It's starting to seem like the whole area of Frederick Road, the people there aren't used to seeing people like me or if they have other reasons unknown to me. This review would have been a 1 star but there were 2 saving graces. First is the food, well for the most part. I got their Basil and Tomato bread, Apple Muffin, White bread and 5 Grain bread. Basil and Tomato bread was delicious. I loved the texture; slightly chewy and fluffy. The white bread and 5 grain breads were good too. The 5 grain bread is a bit weak so you'd have to be careful making sandwiches of any kind. The apple muffin was mediocre at best. The flavors were there but it was really dry and it made the texture tough. There was another woman working the counter and was busy helping a customer on the side when I was in the front of the line. I understood and smiled. When she got done with the customer, she thanked me for being patient. That was the other saving grace. read more

I stumbled onto this bakery while hiking with my family and dropped-in out of curiosity. The attendants behind the counter did not even acknowledge me when i said "hello!". I had a poor first impression that left me feeling like my business was not important to them and I should be honored to be in their establishment.... I mean this is a bakery not a luxury boutique on Rodeo Drive for crying out loud. Now while it is great to have access to locally made artisanal breads, and I am all for supporting local businesses, the customer service in this establishment is lacking. It is not unusual to get a deer in headlights stare from the service staff. The bread is decent, but for me as a customer I will take an ok product with great service than great product with awful service. If this place wants loyal repeat customers they should employ people with customer service attitude. I have been to bakeries in Europe and as rude as people say the French can be, their service in their boulangeries is always jovial and warm. The Breadery's product may sell itself but their service will command more business and customer loyalty. If you don't care for service then it has good offerings of breads, wine, jams etc. If service is important to you when you patronize a business, you may be sorely disappointed with this establishment. read more

I texted my roommate in disgust after visiting two "bakeries" which didn't have baguettes. She immediately reminded me about The Breadery so I fired up the truck and shimmied through Old El up the hill to Oella. The Breadery had what I was looking for, bread. It was on the expensive side, but totally worth it. $5 for a loaf of sourdough. $3.50 for a Baguette. The Baguette was crunchy on the outside, and voluminous, sweet, and tender inside. Beautiful crumb, or at least I think that's what bakers say. The baguette barely made it out of the driveway. 5 Stars for variety 4 Stars for helpful staff 3 Stars for smelling like a bakery when you walk in, which can't be said about the other "bakeries" 2 Stars for "oh shhhhh they sell beer and wine here too?" 1 Star for exchanging cash for carbohydrates. read more

Probably one of the best San Francisco sour doughs out there. It used to be worth a try but we've decided against going here in the future. This was a favorite spot of mine until an unsavory incident with a staff member. A family member of mine, who is asian, visited the Breadery and was rudely, shouted at (yes that's correct), to put a mask-on by a Breadery staff member, when clearly some other non-asian customers AND staff members were not wearing one. This staff member, i'm assuming is the same one referenced in a multitude of reviews for this business. I elevated this incident on the Breadery's website contact section and was promptly called back by the owner. Upon explaining the incident, the owner had an idea of which employee could be responsible. He also explained that "something" in this staff members life could explain the off-putting behavior of the employee. I asked for a formal apology to my family member and while the owner was apologetic and was willing to give us a "free loaf" of bread, he would not confirm that this employee would apologize. To this day, an apology has not arrived nor do I care if it ever does at this point. I understand that Yelp is not the forum to expound on personal beliefs related to these types of incidents, but I will say that most successful businesses often succeed by coupling a great product with great customer service. Breadery missed the mark on this one in my opinion and will no longer receive my business or my recommendation to others. read more

Just a cute little bread nook lol bread/ muffins and free samples and the cleanliness bathroom I have been into a public place in a very long time! They have flavored Balsamic vinegars omg been there twice now and will continue to go there! Blackberry ginger balsamic vinegar is the bomb and great on salads and meats I love it and the white pineapple very good in vanilla yogurt and on fruit salad and on ham! They have really nice spreads I got Habanero Mango spread omg I made with egg salad! So delicious we got a fresh loaf of Raisin Walnut bread and my friend doesn't eat much bread either got watch our figures lol but we split a loaf and very good I toasted a piece with peanut butter & sliced bananas! I was stuffed very healthy & hearty bread especially for a treat! They sell all kinds of wines! Fresh coffee & teas also if you need bottled water when you run out on trail they have a lot of water bottles cold drinks! That's how my friend & me found this place our last trip up there and we were glad we ran out of water cause we found this awesome place! They have tables outside which I will include some pics They also on certain days they have outside homemade brick oven pizzas stands set up I would love to have that but maybe we catch that another time!! Lol I think they do it on weekends! We always go threw the week! If never been worth the visit you need breads for parties they have all kind of homemade Rolls too!
