Stumbled across this bakery looking for a cake last minute, they came up as a suggestion on yelp! They had a variety if cakes on display. I was looking for a Dominican cake but the lady over the counter convinced me that the Tres Leche was also great to try! She was very accommodating and made the name plaque look very nice! Good pastries, excellent cookies and sweets (love the flan, for instance). HOWEVER, if they don't know you, they will pass you over on line and take their friend ahead of you and these other asses (other customers from the neighborhood) they won't acknowledge you were first on line! If you know the ladies that work there - GREAT, otherwise, don't count on getting served quickly! I just move in to the neighborhood and have zero knowledge about anything in the area. So when my son birthday is coming up in 2 days and this mama was too lazy to take a 45 min ride to Korean town to get the cake, I opened the Yelp app. The name Sugarboy bakery popped up as they are very close to us. Only 20+ reviews made me wonder if I should take a risk, but what the hack, it was just for a small group of my son friends at school. To my surprise, the chocolate cake was moist and not overly sweet. The taste was perfect and everyone love it. Additional to that was the cupcake. My mom ordered cupcakes for my baby shower. Three dozen: 1 dz chocolate, 1 dz vanilla and 1 dz red velvet. Pros - Cake is awesome. The chocolate is chocolaty with chocolate mousse and a strawberry garnish. The vanilla taste more like a pound cake with butter and hints of lemon zest - love it. The red velvet is also moist and the frosting is a smooth cream cheese. Definitely recommend on taste alone. They didn't ask for a deposit up front and our cupcakes were ready at 10a the next day as promised... kind of. Cons - The kind of.... turns out we only got 7 red velvet for some reason, not the full dozen. We were given extra vanilla and chocolate as a result, but didn't get an explanation on why this happened or why there were only 7 available in the first place if they were freshly baked for us. Felt random. We also asked for coconut on the vanilla cupcakes which we didn't receive. We called later on after the event and were told the person who gave us the order did so prematurely and it actually wasn't ready and someone was supposed to explain the reasoning behind the missing 5 red velvet. Either way, the event was over at that point and we had gotten 3 dozen cupcakes as ordered, even if not in the denominations we asked for. It also seemed like there was only a selection of those three flavors, although they seemed willing to make frosting and topping customizations. Overall, I would recommend Sugarboy since the cupcakes are just delicious. I rarely eat leftover cake but my husband and I have been killing them slowly since after the shower. read more

I went there to order a cake for my sons birthday. I went there 7 days before his birthday and paid up front. I ordered a strawberry shortcake the smallest size they had was $45. I asked could the cake be ready by noon on his birthday. I actually showed up at 2pm. Once I showed up everyone is scrambling to get the cake ready which took approx 15-20 mins. I'll start by saying this: The cake was delicious. The baking recipe is great. But what I was promised and what was delivered is laughable. I would have returned the cake had it not been the same day I needed the cake and essentially was forced to either take the random cake given to me or have no cake at all. The cake itself truly is pretty... but not the cake I asked for at all. It seems what I discussed with them was taken as a light suggestion as opposed to an actual talk of design, because aside from the toppers (which were on point), everything else was improvised with a design that some intern came up with last minute. The Cake makers are super creative with ideas and decor but most importantly their cake is supper yummy, Delicious I want some right now. lol. What I love about them is that if you are set on a cake or pastry and the price is out of range, They will negotiate and accommodate your needs. This is probably one of the worst Bakeries I have ever been to. The owner is so unprofessional, rude and condescending. I ordered a cake ahead of time, it was extremely dry, not moist/buttery, over priced, and not to mention she didn't even have it ready on time for pick up. They make up the prices as they go along. There are no set prices based on the size/ filings. Very disappointed on what I received for my son's birthday cake... my son wanted a Yeezy sneaker box cake ... when I went to check on the price it was way too expensive for it because it was a fondant... so I went more affordable option that was given to be which was with butter cream icing ... theday they had a square cake display in which I asked the girl can I get that shape and put the edible logo of Yeezy on top and she said yes we will do that and she even put it on the receipt that I am ordering a"box" style cake . On the day of pick up (my sons actual birthday ) I received a round cake with Yeezy lettering . It was not what we agreed on nor what was written on the receipt. I told the girl dany and her response was that I would have to pay for the difference and wait around for 30 minutes until they make a new cake. I always get my cakes from here and I recommend people to come here too and they give me great feedback. I've gotten about 3 custom cakes with fondant don't here and they always execute. Their tres leche cake is the best. My only complaint is that the dye they use for cupcakes will stain your entire mouth and your fingers. It's not fun when trying to wash it off my toddler. For a cake that cost $650, I would expect it to be of high quality or for it to be at least intact. Well that wasn't my case. My place is a 15 mintue car ride from this bakery. As soon as I got home my cake was melting. The coconut that was on top of the cake had fallen, the birthday sign was smeared because of all the cake sweating. When I called Gladys and let her know about the situation she blamed the person who went to pick up the cake which was my brother. She said and I quote "don't you have A.C in your car?" I couldn't believe what i was hearing. I have order cakes from brooklyn and they have never gotten this way, and I'm from the bronx! And YES I have A.C. in the car! She then she said they could "try" fixing the cake but they couldn't promise me when it was going to be ready but it would take more then 2 hours. My event was at 7pm. When I call it was 6pm. So I had no choice but to deal with it. She said she didn't understand how it could happen if the cake was was freshly made even stating they made the cake that same day. Pick up time for the cake was at 4pm. I believe they rushed to make my cake. This is the reason why the color was running down and cake was sinking in. They definitely knew something was wrong with my cake before giving it to us because they gave my brother a free cake when he picked up my cake. I assume they thought it would justify for their crappy job. No, I didn't want another cake. I wanted my cake made right, the one I paid 650 for. And to make matters worst the taste of the cake was horrible. My guest stated it tasted like cake made from the box. I definitely don't recommend this bakery. I ADVISE YOU NOT TO GO HERE! I ordered a customize cake for my graduation in which I was celebrating on getting my BSN. And I had specific directions as to how I wanted the cake to look; I was told my vision would be portrayed exactly as I explained it to the cake decorator. When I received the 3 layered cake the cake was a total mess the the top layer looked like a top hat and the heart which I indicated I wanted in the middle laid towards the bottom of the cake, at the top of the cake there was suppose to be a nurses hat with a graduation tassel and the hat it self looked totally unrecognizable from a distance and from what it seemed they didn't even bother to implement the graduation tassel with the nurses hat as I said It was vital to the design. Secondly, the second layer was quilted and had gold edible pearls and that layer was about the only part of the cake that looked presentable. The last layer I was told would be in beige and would look like a band aid and would have a black and red ribbon towards the bottom and when I looked at the cake it did not resemble a band aid nor was it beige. Lastly I told the cake decorator to put a small diploma and a ribbon towards the bottom with my name on it and of course the ribbon with my name wasn't there and the diploma was the size of my middle finger and was unrecognizable and I also told her to put pills falling down the cake which she did not put. When I complained about the design she made a number of excuses one of which was that the venue in which I told her to deliver it to did not have proper refrigeration which was a lie because the venue it self made cakes on site; and she made the excuse that due to that issue the heart in the first layer shifted downward and the pills falling weren't implemented due to risk of bleeding. The second excuse was that I in visioned a poor design and if I were to have paid more money the cake would have looked better. So in better terms if you aren't going to spend over $400 they aren't going to even bother making your cake look nice. I personally spent $300 and the cake did not meet my expectation and the whole experience with sugarboy was horrible; they are very unprofessional and will not take blame for their faults nor will they provide a refund. **** WORD OF ADVISE STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!****** read more

At the very last minute; I mean like less than 48 hrs before my daughter's 1st Birthday shindig, called Sugarboy Bakery because I really wanted to get her a groovy cake and was at a loss as to where to turn. I have lived in the neighborhood (238th/Cannon-Sedgwick) for several years and my parents continue to reside in the lovely, family-oriented area. Having passed by Sugarboy so many times, I decided, why not call them? So, late Thursday evening, I call and spoke with a very patient man (I was frantic at this point) who asked me what I would like in terms of a birthday cake, and I simply told him, "a Dominican-style cake with Happy 1st Birthday" written on it. I was in such a rushed fog, that I didn't even put thought into a theme. He went on to ask me if I'd like a character on the cake and ding (!), thought about Dora, which my year old daughter was familiar with. Given short notice, the graceful man (and I should have gotten his name), saved the day! I could pick up the cake on the afternoon of the party, freshly prepared! Well, was I SURPRISED beyond my wildest imagination when we picked up the magical wonder from Sugarboy Bakery! What I'd expected and would have been happy with, would have been a "drawing" of Dora. However, what we got was SO MUCH MORE! An actual Dora the Explora theme was created on the top cake surface, complete with Dora driving her little yellow car over a hilly path with candied grass, and oh SO MUCH MORE! Plus, if it could be any better, it WAS!! Agghhhh....the guava (guayaba)-based Dominican cake was absolutely, mouthwatering DEEEEE-LISH! I probably gained about 10lbs just going at it non-stop. The HUGE artistic masterpiece of a scrumptuous cake was worth every inexpensive cent of its $65! I called the day after and left a voicemail, then called back a week later to actually speak with someone, ensuring to sing my praises to just anyone that worked there, that picked up the phone. I had ordered cakes from here for the past couple of years. Last year we ordered a cake for a birthday and we felt that something was off but we did not give it much thought. On Saturday we had ordered a cake for a birthday and when I came in to pick up the cake at an hour later that we had requested. I did not like the fact that they had a lot of cakes laid out on top of the counter instead of having it in the fridge. When it was time to eat the cake and we took a bite out of it.
