MARVIN KEY Longitude: -81.6445331 Latitude: 24.7115303 If you're wondering where all the locals disappear to on weekends, chances are if they know someone with a motor boat, they are at Marvin Key. This is a popular locals island and sandbar in the outback area off the lower Florida Keys. The only way to get here is by boat. Having had the opportunity to go here a few times already, it is absolute paradise. The sandbars are quite large around the island for walking, kayaking or just wading in the water with your beach chair and a beverage. You can also stroll along the shore with picture opportunities at every turn. Make sure you pack plenty of water, sunscreen, your noodles and even an umbrella if you plan on spending the day. It is not uncommon for waders to visit from boat to boat, so you just may meet some new friends along the way. The age range for visitors at Marvin Key is around 35 and up. The 35 and younger single crowd tend to migrate to Snipes Key which is in the general vicinity. Just like many of the other outback islands and sandbars around the Keys, knowing the area and navigation is crucial to avoid running aground, getting stuck, and most importantly, preventing damage to our reefs and ecosystem. There is a small parking lot and no public restroom but they do have a porta pottty there. It's surrounded by big rocks so you wouldn't want to go in the water there. Sammy Creek Landing is no exception. Basically it was once upon a time a home but today it's a local park but we can't figure out if it's a county park or from the state. We always wonder because one year it's nice and relaxing and another year it's overgrown with weeds and kind of sad. I remember when it had no parking (limited to parking on Old State Road 4A), and nowadays it has a parking lot and it's landscaped and it's pretty clean. Nonetheless the place is nice... and I cherish the memories I have of this place.

Our 'captain' and 'guide', Bethany, was really good at handling the boat, and all that went with it (including us)!! Maximum number of guests is six, today we were four, we all got along well. The kayaking around the little mangrove island was easy despite the moderate wind. Those easily frightened need not be. Bethany imparted a lot of interesting mangrove facts as we went as well as pointing out the different birds that occupy the island. Not really an island as it's all mangroves and no sand, dirt or rock to stand on. Snorkeling that day wasn't great. It had recently rained and the water was a bit murky but we did see a variety of sponges and a few fish. The sail back to port was relaxing, snacks were put out, pineapple and those chunky pretzel things, and for a bit, all was right in the world.

We booked the half day snorkeling excursion for the two of us and our four children (14, 12, 8, and 7) and it was a picture perfect day in the water. Both our guides were friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable, not to mention incredibly patient as they fitted each of us up and made sure that the youngest were safe and able to enjoy the snorkeling as much as the older ones. Sweet Marla even snorkeled alongside our daughter and gave her the confidence to go out a second time alone. Great company, great boat, great snacks, great sea life!
