Anticipation and Stomp would be my recommendation. If you pay $5 you can taste test some of their wines. The employees are knowledgeable and are nice enough to describe the wine, it's parings, origination of the grapes etc. We originally came for stompfest but they canceled last minute even though their website says 'RAIN OR SHINE'. We had purchased our tickets online and due to their 'new refunds' policy we used the money towards the taste test event and a bottle of wine. read more

I love this place! Sugarloaf is the first Maryland vineyard I've been to (and I obviously need to hit up more! Especially for comparison's sake, vs. Virginia wine, which I am clearly a fan of!) I've been here twice now- once back in May and once last weekend. My boyfriend lives about 20+ish minutes from Comus so we went here last Saturday on a whim, having enjoyed our first visit enough to make a return. It was a BEAUTIFUL day on Saturday and we did a tasting outdoors, on the 'upper level' by the barn and by the tables- and the vines, of course. We had the same gentleman do our tasting as the first visit- didn't catch his name but he is very jovial and a self-proclaimed messy pourer! So funny. We tasted the Penelope first and then the rest of the wines on the line-up were ones we had the first time as well (but the Penelope was new to us). I absolutely LOVE their Stomp chilled! It tasted so good. I liked it at room temperature the first time too but it is so bomb chilled. I didn't get a chance to have a glass of their Sangria this time (we got a glass of Penelope after the tasting) but I think we will have to make one more trip before the end of the summer. The ambiance here is lovely as well as their wines- very laid-back, I love how it's tucked away a little in the 'country', and I loved all the flowers that were blooming last weekend! The customer service has been pretty friendly- we were especially pleased with our server- and the prices are moderate. We will definitely visit again! Great place to grab a glass of wine, listen to live music and unwind after hiking Sugarloaf. Lots of pups, hikers, weekend warriors.

They have decent wine and most of the staff who work at the tasting counters are nice people. The reason, I am giving this vineyard a poor rating is because of their security staff who are very badly trained to handle customers. I have visited many wineries in Maryland and Virginia but I have rarely encountered security staff, or staff that are not trained to properly serve customers. I was visiting this vineyard after a hike with some friends, and as we entered, the security staff stopped a few of my friends to check their bags and purses. Some had water bottles from our hike and they were made to empty the water before entering, and the manner of the request was just rude. I have never before seen a policy at any winery that does not allow you to carry a small bottle of water. Talking to a few other guests at the winery, I heard the same experience of rudeness from the security staff. Most people visit a winery to have an enjoyable experience and wineries in Virginia and Maryland are known for their courteous, friendly staff. Employing security staff at wineries who are not trained to handle customers is poor management and a lack of understanding of customers. read more

I love Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard. It's such a beautiful and friendly place. I had so much wine I was tipsy by the time we decided to go up to the mountain for a hike. I was able to meet Manolo, who's the wine maker at Sugarloaf. Such a sweet person and gave me the answer to all of my questions about wine. I recommend this place to everyone. You must go! 2 stars for appearances only. A middle aged brunette said hi but that was the extent of our interaction with the staff. There were only two other couples in the tasting room and my husband and I were not even offered a wine list while we waited. After ten minutes of waiting both couples got serviced twice and chatted up while we were ignored even though we were also standing at the counter. Wonderful wine, but I would come for the lavender goat cheese alone. Lovely atmosphere, quiet countryside and so quaint. The service is friendly and helpful. Very informed. Since its cold out they had open fire pits which was nice and warm. We loved sitting outside and meeting new people. I tried their winter drink the Meliceus (warm) it was perfect for the weather! This vineyard is such a beautiful place! I came here with some friends, sat outside, and enjoyed a beautiful Saturday afternoon. We brought our own food (sushi and &pizza) and purchased 2 bottles, Comus ($28.95) and Viognier ($23.95), to share. To get a glass, each person needs to individually show his/her ID to the bartender. They also do tastings of all their wines in the tent for $10, which is a great deal! You can bring your own dogs (leashed) and there is so much space outdoors (and some tables indoors) to enjoy your weekend! read more

We were dog sitting my sister in law's dog for the week. The dog was really a sweet dog, but seriously, the DUMBEST DOG ALIVE. I know that everyone thinks their dog is the silly dumb one...but this dog had probably only 2 IQ points more then HyperboleAndAHalf's dog (http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/07/dog.html). So for the week, my husband tried to teach him how to sit (Dog = 1, Husband = 0) and lay down (Dog = 2, Husband = 0), and stay (Dog = 3, Husband = 0). My husband, bound to do *something* with this dog, decided to look up dog-friendly activities in hopes that maybe *something* will spark that last remaining and dying brain cell into doing something more then pee on the kitchen floor (Dog = 4, Fenny = 0)...and he found that Sugarloaf Mountain had "dog days"! So we packed up the dog (he also had a hard time understanding "get into the car"), and headed out to the Vineyard so that my husband could try to socialize and play with the dog...while I got quietly tanked on wine. The staff was fully prepared for "dog day" and had doggy snacks ready for all the visiting puppies (just a note - this dog was really so dumb that he didn't understand what "treat" was. It took him a few times before he "got" that the stick of Pupperoni was *edible*...yes...a WEEK of this). While one staff member cooed over the dog, another quickly and quietly poured me wine...and kept it coming. Hallaluah! I know I'm pretty girly in this, but I LOOOOOOOOOOOVED the "Stomp". It's a merlot that tasted like the SWEET NECTER OF THE GODS. Seriously delicious and did not resemble merlot a bit. Which I guess doesn't make it a good merlot to anyone but me. Heh. After the tasting, we went into the barn, to order a cheese platter and a couple of glasses of their in-house Sangria to enjoy, while my husband continued his valiant effort to teach the dog to lie down next to our table (Dog = 5, Husband = 0). By the time we finished off the cheese platter and our Sangria, I was so mellow I barely minded that the dog decided that sticking his nose up my skirt and into my crotch in front of everyone. Yup. LOOOOOOOOOOONG week with that dog. NEVER dog sitting for them again. NEVER. But I'll definitely think about coming back here (sans dog). read more

My husband and I first went to Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard 4-5 years ago when it 1st opened. We weren't initially impressed with the wines but decided to give it a second try today--we won't be going back. This time their young vines were much better (drinkable) but still not impressive. Customer service, however, was horrific--the staff is incredibly rude. The first 2 ladies that served us were pretty pretentious and surly. The lady in their sales office was condescending and tried to tell us that they did not do tastings on a weekend as it got too busy; she added that they primarily served wine and not tastings! (This is clearly not what is stated on their website!) She directed us to a tent labeled "tasting room," saying they might accommodate us. The lady we met there was a bit nicer but still unpleasant. She told us the tasting area was only on one side of the tiny tent and done by the one lady serving 2 other groups; we were told to wait for her as the other 2 staff were "wine pourers" and not "tasting pourers" (later, we saw them serving what looked like tastings!). Our wait wasn't long and the lady that poured our tastings was very pleasant and professional. The only downside was that she poured the wines a little to quickly and didn't offer too much information about their wines--effort wise she was great though. We also got their standard cheese plate and it was pretty horrible. It tasted like they went to Giant, got the cheapest generic brands, put them on a plate and charge $12-14 for it! Completely not worth it. We weren't inspired to walk away with any additional purchases--bad service always makes what might be a tolerable, average experience taste extra bad! Other than that, it is nice that the vineyard is at the bottom of a lovely and scenic mountain with great hikes. Their outside patio is nice and they had a musician when we went. $5 tastings are great but not worth this type of experience. We wanted to like them. We gave them a second chance. I don't think I would ever take a trip out here for the winery itself, but it sure makes a nice addition to a day spent hiking around sugarloaf mountain. Some food would be a nice addition. Your options are limited to a couple of flights of wine tastings, 12 bottles of wine and two options in the cheese plate department. Despite the limitations of the wine and the selection, the setting and patio were quite nice, the staff was very personable and down to earth and the owner was walking around introducing himself to people, always a good sign. We first tried the standard sampler for $4 per person. This gave us 6 1oz servings of some decent wines. We left the bar and headed to a table on the patio and chose the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon for $21 and a cheese platter (there was no menu, so i can't remember the price on this). Again, the wine was decent, but the cheese felt like they got it off the cheese platter from Costco (not that I have any problem with Costco cheese platters, its just not what i want to order from a restaurant!) I would make the stop out here if you live in the area, or are heading back from Sugarloaf mountain. Okay, and maybe if you want to try out a winery for the first time. read more

I wish there was a negative star because 1 is too much. I did not enjoy their wines or cheeses and the staff was horrible. My glass of wine came in a glass with an oil slick on the top. I got a $15 cheese plate made of fine Kraft cheeses found directly underneath the yogurt shelf at Safeway. Worst of all, they don't know how to take advantage of their own promotions. I went there with a group-on and they gave me attitude when I tried to use it. And they tried to give me some BS explanation about how they only do wine tastings during weekdays and "just do wine pourings" over the weekend. They eventually said they "might accommodate" us if we "hang around over there" then gave us our tasting (uhh, excuse me I mean wine pouring). Although, most of the staff were not courteous, our server for the wine tasting was very nice. I recently went to this vineyard with some friends that I hadn't seen in a while to catch up and enjoy a beautiful day with some wine and snacks. I highly recommend the sangria and the Cab Blanc. The vineyard overall was spectacular and a great way to lounge about on a nice day. The only reason I would give 2 stars and not 4 is because of the "manager." I don't know if this is one of those situations where he's the boss' son or if he has to work there for community service but he was a great example of how you deliver terrible customer service. His demeanor towards the guests (and his own staff) was rude; he carried himself like a petulant child begrudgingly going about his chores. I wouldn't expect a total stranger to interact with people like he did, let alone someone who is trying to sell a wine and an experience. I think he needs a review of "the customer is always right" mantra. read more

Not very impressed. My group of 5 arrived to celebrate my birthday on the Bacchus celebration day for them. My friend called in advance to make sure we didn't have to be members and were told no problem. We got there at noon. The place was just a little busy. I should have gone with my initial red flag in that not 1 staff member said hello. Not one. My friend, who got there a few minutes before us, was told that she couldn't bring balloons she brought inside. We're not talking Up movie status balloons. There were 6 regular sized latex balloons. She said she planned on staying outside with them but they still said no. Um...the outside area was empty when we got there. On to the tasting...I guess that's exactly what it would be called since we, like some of the other Yelpers, received a thimble full. We all felt very (very) rushed and the guy pouring was so messy (like he was rushing). The pleasantries were short with him. He was very scripted with his knowledge. It was bad. We went inside to order a glass to sit down outside. The signs posted inside make it VERY clear that if there are more than 4 people in your party, outside you go. Don't move any chairs around either (also posted on multiple signs). I get that since its a super small space but I really felt like a 1st grader with all of the posted reminders. Anyway, we're ordering (or trying to) & the staff, although smiling, seemed annoyed. They didn't try to help us choose between styles of wine ("oh this is sweeter....if you're looking for dry then pick this"). That's been my experience at every other winery on the planet- helpful in an attempt to get you to buy more wine. It was like ordering at McDonalds. Keeping in mind this is the same staff that told us NO BALLOONS FOR YOU. So, in short, the wines were average at best, not a friendly atmosphere, definitely don't come here expecting to celebrate anything even if it's a scheduled celebration day for this winery. I highly recommend La Grange in Haymarket, VA. A few of the other women I went to Sugarloaf with and I are members. We all agreed that La Grange is much better. Taste, atmosphere, staff.... First the good: It's a beautiful vineyard in a lovely area. There are lots of tables both indoor and out and they're dog friendly. Great place for a picnic! We interacted with multiple members of their staff and most were friendly. The bad: We went on a Saturday. It was beautiful weather and there was an event so I understand it was busy. However, one of the staff members was short with us, and there was just a general feeling of being rushed. The wine: The wine is okay. During the tour, one of the owners (Carl?) rambled on for nearly 45 minutes in a fly-infested room. I think he was drunk. He told odd stories and yelled at a couple for whispering during his tour. Amazing spot! Go on the wkds and they serve an incredible white sangria ($8/glass). Not sure how much alc is in there, but they were delicious! There is plenty of outdoor seating and it's a great spot for families and dog owners. We tried the Chardonnay and Can Franc and loved them both so much, we got a few bottles to go. The reason I visit this vineyard was that I was doing some hiking near this location. They have a great outside seating area. The only thing I found odd was the place of their sangria spot. If you want it a sangria, you needed to walk to the opposite site of their tasting. I didn't mind the walk but on a really hot day not so much. Maybe they can serve the sangria in all of their serving areas so visitors can just enjoy the day seating and relax. read more

Put this on your "Cool and Unique things to do in the DMV" list NOW ! Less than 45 minutes from the DC line there is a phenomenal vineyard, tasting room and wine store. Bring your dog, a picnic basket,a frisbee a football and your buds and prepare for an awesome afternoon. If your are up for it you can go for a pleasant hike in the next door Sugarloaf mountain ( about 20 - 25 minutes from the parking lot to the top - and then you have earned your libation). As a stop on the Montgomery Country Farm Tour, we had to check- in for some wine. I do like the fact that it's the only winery in MoCo but the presentation left me a little underwhelmed. They weren't doing tours of the grapes and the farmers market left us wondering since it was only corn stand. The tasting room is ok but a bit small. Maybe it was because they were getting ready for the festival that night. Some of the wines are good...and some are just OK ~ I am no wine connoisseur but I can tell that their less expensive wines are a bit weak, they don't taste as developed as some others, sometimes a little like grape juice. The $28 bottle of 2007 Comus Reserve is the best...very strong flavors, hints of chocolate. It actually won The Stomp is also good and light for just a table red. I would give it 3.5 stars. read more

These folks treat their guests well, 2-legged and 4-legged alike! We came here after a hike on Mount Sugarloaf - you cannot help but pass it in your way back to DC. You can try all their wines for $10 and then you can buy a glass or a bottle to enjoy there and needless to say you can always take wine home. The wines were tasty. I loved their Rose and enjoyed their Viognier, not their own but brought in from Charlotteville, but tasty nevertheless. Their reds were tasty as well and there was one dessert wine, late harvest Pino Grigio as well. The staff is amazingly friendly and helpful. I brought my dog and they gave her treats, brought her a bowl of water and kept refilling it. So dog are welcome but please don't be afraid of coming here without a dog. They also have some food, cheese plates and cheese & salami plates. Tasty and reasonably priced. We did enjoy their patio - they also have a nice indoor air-conditioned area - however they are right off a road. Country road, so quiet but still. They do have an upper patio but it was closed today so we did not get to enjoy it! Great afternoon! We'll be back! read more

I used to go here when it first opened. I went again more recently. The place has become more popular which also means it's super crowded now. The live music is always fun. They've made several changes that I do understand but actually take away from what used to be a great experience. No more cheese and cracker platters. You get s giant block of cheese and a package of crackers. Most people bring picnics I suppose but that platter they used to have was great. They only do tastings in one small back bar now up the hill. Sad face. There's another tent that you just go for drinks. And the inside to buy bottles. The place continues to grow which is great to see. And I still love their wines. Their Chardonnay is one of the only Chardonnays I really love. read more

Stopped here after a nice hike on the Sugarloaf Mountain trail. The main house (where they sell the wine & snacks and where the bathrooms are located) is fairly small and was very crowded. The line looped around the inside. The tasting room is in a tent outside, it was also crowded when we arrived there. I supposed everyone wanted to enjoy the warm February weather? Anyway, it's $10 for 10 wine tastings which include whites, a rose, and reds- my favorite. The wines were all outstanding, my favorite being the Cabernet Sauvignon. We got a bottle and drank it outside while enjoying the lovely doggy view- this is dog heaven! That's probably the best part of this winery. It's dog friendly and dogs are everywhere- love! The outside area is huge, great for a picnic with your loyal companion. Definitely returning. read more

Lots of fun! We hiked Sugarloaf Mountain first and then headed to the winery about 1 pm. It said on their website to bring a blanket if you arrive after 1 pm b/c the tables might be full, and that is really true! We were lucky enough to grab a table with an umbrella for some shade for our dog, but I'd say they were all gone by 1:30. This is a very DOG FRIENDLY winery. The tasting are in a tent, so you can bring your dog in there while you taste wine. The store where you buy the wines and use the bathroom is the only place dogs are not allowed b/c there is also food (cheese) for sale in there. We drank our bottle of wine and ate our picnic lunch and had a great afternoon! Would definitely go again. read more

Made a stop here after a strenuous hike, decided to take part in their $10 wine tasting. My boyfriend decided to get himself Gouda cheese with crackers for $8, which according to him is quite a deal since most markets sell them for around $13. I went here for a grape stomping event with my girlfriends. I drove from Northern Virginia and it was a scenic and beautiful 1 and a half hour drive up highway 15. There aren't any signs to direct you, but eventually we made it up the hill and past the SEVERAL bike riders on the two lane road out that way. I'm not sure if it was because of the event but there were parking attendants directing where to park your vehicle and to tell you not to walk in the road, although there aren't really any other places to walk. It was $15 if you were going to have any alcoholic beverages and $5 for non drinkers. The $15 included a free wine glass which could be engraved for free (which I felt was a nice touch)and one drink of choice...the sangria was my pick and it was very flavorful and refreshing. There was plenty of seating with chairs and tables,and an open area for blankets to lay out while listening to the band. The grape stomping was fun, but only 3 people could stomp at a time, so the lines got a bit long. There was a start time and a limit so that made it easier. There were also only two stomping songs-the Italian version and Beyonce's Put A Ring On It...seriously?!?! I didn't do the tasting because when I tried some of the wine my friends purchased, it was a bit strong. I like that pets were allowed, but the problem is you get the good with the bad and there are small kids there so I felt it wasn't a safe combination. The Husband and I wanted to visit a winery this past weekend and decided to visit a Maryland winery instead of our usual VA wineries. As per usual, the Garmin told us it was only 18 miles from us and it took 400 hours to get there. That wasn't fun, but you can't blame the winery for that, right? By the time you get off the interstates and turn onto a country road, you immediately feel like you are a million miles from the hustle and bustle of DC. It is a very pretty drive to the winery and the rolling hills and mountains and valleys make for breathtaking views. We arrived around 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and this place was packed! They have a patio set up with tables, chairs and umbrellas and they even had someone playing music for a while. It was a nice, relaxing atmosphere. We went inside the building that was marked for tastings only to be told to head back outside to the tent they had set up. Okay, cool. We head outside and have to weave our way through all of the people and dogs that were there. Enter the tent to find that they are pressing grapes that day. It was SO LOUD. I know that they have to do this and it was neat to see, but it was hard to hear sometimes. The person leading our tasting was nice enough and she did a good job of telling us about the wines, but she was certainly not afraid to make it clear that she liked certain customers better than others. She did mention that their Pinot Grigio (I think) had just been chosen by the Kennedy Center to be served there. So, that is something! The wines were are good, but my absolute favorite was the Circe. It was delicious and such a different wine than you get at most east coast wineries. We left with three bottles of this! After our tasting, we were told to head back into the house to purchase glasses and bottles. They have a small appetizer menu, but you get a lot. We had the cheese and pepperoni plate that came with crackers, grapes, pepperoni, and three kinds of cheese. We sat out in the sunshine, listened to the music and enjoyed our wine. A word to the wise, they do have several dogs on site and dogs are welcome here. So, be careful where you step and be aware of your food because one of their dogs likes to eat! :) All in all, it was an enjoyable visit and we liked their wines. I grew up at the foot of the mountain, so this winery is quite nearly walking distance from my parents' house. I had my 21st birthday here with their tasting program, and this place is just a huge part of my heart. The wine is delicious and diverse (the dessert white, comus, and stomp are my personal favorites). The food is good, though on a typical day, it is a bit of an aside, clearly not the business's main attraction. What sets the winery apart is the people and the scenery. The staff are dog friendly and extra people friendly, with a loving affection for their wine. The scenery on the mountain is gorgeous (if you haven't gone up the mountain, I strongly suggest you do that too). Often enough, SMV will have live music or other events going into the evening. It is an incredible summer happening to drive or walk to the winery, sit down with a beautiful, delicious glass of wine and some cheese and enjoy the company of others while taking in a casual concert. I have been on the wine production tour more than once, but unfortunately it always has gone a bit over my young, ignorant head so I don't remember too much of it. Still, its very cool to see! They grow their own grapes (I think they're California originating vines), and they are one of (if not the only) local wine served at the White House! read more
