Went to get my eyebrows done here - all I can say was that I was shocked when I saw the result. I asked to keep my brows thick (and well...symmetrical...needless to say!) and what I got was the following: 1. different thickness - one thin the other one thick 2. different level - one higher one lower 3. different length - one brow was way further from my nose than the other (giving me a huge / asymmetrical gap between the two brows - looked awful!) Never coming back! Sure, it's only $10 to get your eyebrows done, but you can make yourself look terrible at home for free! read more

Went to get my eyebrows threaded, had the worst experience. I asked the lady there not to do them too thin, and she thinned the out. Not only that they are uneven, one looks higher than the other. It looks like a have my eyebrow raised all the time, and it looks choppy. It was painful too, and she gave me little cuts that were stinging on my way home. Terrible, they don't accept card either only cash or Venmo, which I don't mind but they don't have a sign or anything. This is place is hit or miss, it depends on who threads your eyebrow. The first time I went here I had a great experience and my eyebrows were on fleek! The second time it wasn't the best, the lady who threaded my eyebrows the second time was eating an apple and she just picked up the thread and started threading, don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against apples (people who eat them unsanitarily is a bit odd, she didn't sanitize her hands before touching my face), so it took me months before I returned. When I did once again and asked the lady who threaded my eyebrows the very first time to thread them again, and guess what?! As expected she did a good job! Since then I have been here couple of times that is the only lady (I forgot her name) who I trust at this place who does a decent job. Cleanliness: not so clean, but for threading it is okay, I don't let them use any tools on me except thread, again I don't trust its clean. I have been coming to sumi for a while now and I can say with confidence I have yet to receive better service elsewhere. She knows just how to work with my eyebrows and clean them up to make them look exactly how I want them. Be mindful sometimes she is the only person in the salon so you may have to wait if you don't call ahead and just walk in but it's definitely worth it. Very affordable I think if anything she should raise her prices considering how thorough of a job she does! 10/10 recommend for she's the only person I trust with my eyebrows. read more

I got a Brazilian Wax here for only $40 which is half the price of what they are charging across the street at the European Wax Center. However, this place is horrible at sanitation. Con: The counter top that the worker used was caked with old wax. She did not wear gloves. I also do not remember her washing her hands before or after the waxing. Pro: She was okay with taking the procedure slowly. It's a shock I actually stayed through the whole thing. At the worst point of it all, I definitely wished I went the EWC instead. I've had a far more sanitary experience for exactly the same price else where. If you want a cheap Brazilian, I would suggest to reconsider getting it at Sumi's. DO NOT GO HERE FOR BRAZILIAN WAX. The process was unsanitary. The tech not wash hands before or wear gloves during, and used a roll on wax stick (how many clients has it's been on). Because it was roll on wax, this left many small hair behind, which now even looks sillier. The process was less than 10 mins and consist of applying baby powder, waxing, and then baby oil. No numbing cream/ointment, and rushed through the whole process. Unprofessional, unsanitary, and an unwelcoming vibe. Oh, and I made sure to make an appointment but still had to wait. Avoid at all cost. Pay for half the price from groupon? Well now you have half the job done with hair still....smh read more

I dropped in around 3pm on a Saturday for eyebrow threading. There were no customers inside, so I was helped right away. The lady who did my eyebrows seemed surly and not in a good mood, and she didn't ask me anything about how I wanted my eyebrows. No smiles, no "how are you doing", nothing. So I hesitantly said "I just want them to match" (because one of my eyebrows is naturally thicker than the other). I wanted to add a "but not too thin - I'd like them natural looking, please" but I didn't because she seemed so surly, like I was bothering her by being there. BIG MISTAKE. I ended up with too-thin eyebrows. I feel like Pam Anderson. Maybe it was partially my fault for not saying "I'd like natural looking eyebrows, not Pam Anderson-thin eyebrows"... but seriously, as an eyebrow threader, shouldn't she know better? At least, shouldn't she ask the customer how they'd like their brows to look, rather than being so unapproachable that the customer's afraid to speak up? Here's the kicker: my polite, afraid little self still tipped her 25%. I'm glad that eyebrows grow back. read more

BEFOREHAND: - I bought a Groupon voucher & my friend bought a Google Offer stating that for $7 you get a $15 value eyebrow waxing or threading session - I attempted to make an appointment via email but didn't get any acknowledgment or response so I had to call to make one - Sumi means charcoal in Japanese, but when I talked to the owner on the phone, she had an Indian accent (when you go in, Sumi IS Indian) HOW IT WORKS: - no appointment necessary; walk-ins welcome - if you bought a Google Offer or Groupon voucher (must be new customer only!) you HAVE to make an appointment (they take card but gratuity must be made in cash) - when you walk into the salon (may use front entrance from street or back entrance from private lot you let them know if you have an appointment or walking in & take a seat until a worker is ready to assist you FIRST LOOK: - right off of El Camino Real closeby to a busy intersection so it was difficult to get into the lot and easy to miss the salon; had to make several u-turns just to find parking - front entrance was locked so we had to wait for a worker to open the door for us - salon is SUPER TINY; three salon chair work stations and several waiting area seats - cashier station is at front left corner with a handwritten appointment sheet - decent in appearance with a lot of natural light but the place didn't seem bright or welcoming, just plain matte white WHILE THERE: - we checked in with the Indian woman and waited to be assisted by the Indian woman and the Nepalese woman (she is dark and almond shaped eyes so she looked Cambodian but said she is from Nepal) to start our brow threading session THREADING: - they start by using a cotton ball with baby powder to absorb the extra moisture from your skin - they hold a roll of thread and start threading, asking you from time to time to adjust holding your arch up and eyelid closed or opening your eyes so they can make your eyebrows as neat as possible CUSTOMER SERVICE: - Nepalese woman made my friend feel comfortable by starting a conversation with her, but made my friend laugh and feel embarrassed about the missing patch of hair from her eyebrows she accidentally plucked, making her eyebrows look uneven - my friend liked the Nepalese woman but felt a bit disrespected when she answered her phone while working on her - the Indian woman who worked on me was polite, direct, and efficient - we were in and out in about 10-15 minutes read more

Since I discovered "threading" on Yelp..I've been going to Sumi to get my eyebrows fix monthly (ever wonder why my brows look so hot?!)...it's been almost 4 years now :) The pluses: - usually I come out happy with my eyebrows shaped perfectly just for me :) - the price is reasonable.. it was $8 for eyebrows threading (including shaping) ..now they raised the price to $10 The minuses: - Sumi is rarely there anymore (I think she's the BEST) ...I like Rosita too..but some other ladies who work there.. often times don't do as good as Sumi and Rosita - The wait could be long!!!!! Even if you make an appointment... it's not always honored as customers just flock in and wait in line for service! - Not sure about sanitation....they do handle payments and later go back to work immediately after without hand washing...plus.. the way the threading works.. they uses their lips to hold the thread...so I guess there must be some contamination there.. especially when the threader is sick. I had haircuts here too twice.. it was cheap..only $15 ..but it's just "basic".. if you only need trimming.. go for it ..otherwise.. naahh!! read more

Had a groupon that expires next month, and the eyebrows definitley needed some cleaning up. Since it was only a few miles away from my work, I went during my lunch break. Made an appointment in advance as you need to if you bought the groupon. Thank goodness I read a Yelp review, as it would've been hard to find if I wasn't looking for a kiddie haircut place. Lots of parking in the back, and you can enter the store through the back as well. 3 chairs, 2 workers. When I went, there were 3 people there, and even though I made it on time, I had to wait until the others were done. I am assuming I had Sumi, and she was pleasant. I indicated that I needed one eyebrow to be fixed (thicker than the other) and some cleaning up to do on the bottom and top. A little over 5 minutes later, I was done! One eyebrow is a bit shorter, but my eyebrows are very difficult to begin with anyways. Was a great job done by Sumi. However, don't expect a fancy salon as others say, it is definitley just the raw essentials here. read more

Went on Tuesday at 2:30pm, wanted Sumi but her assistant Ambret was the only one there. So I would give her a try since the last 2 times Sumi wasn't there, there were some hit and miss reviews on Sumi's assistants. Waited around 15 minutes til she was avail with another customer. I asked to have my eyebrows cleaned with antiseptic, Ambret got a little defensive stating that she washed her hands. I explained my face is dirty and I break out easily. She washed her hands again and put antiseptic on my eyebrows then powder. She quickly did my brows, had me look in the mirror and I suggested one more line of hairs to thin it out, she agreed but didn't want to do it until I asked her. So overall pleased with the outcome, Ambret turned out friendlier as the session went on, doesn't take liberties and take too much off unless asked to and only took around 10 minutes to thread and clip. Not as great as Sumi since Sumi was the one I first went to and knew me and my brows but I would go again to Ambret. read more

I am so sad to give this place 1 star because I have been coming here for 3 years now and have never had this bad an experience. Take a look at the picture under the photos section of this Yelp page to see the chunk of hair she took off of the middle of my brow. Here's what happened: I came in for eyebrow threading, and noticed a new lady working there in addition to the two people I normally go to. The new lady was assigned to me, and while she was threading my eyebrows, I felt a pinch in a place I normally don't feel it and was worried that part of my eyebrow was threaded off that wasn't supposed to be threaded. Sure enough when I checked, she had threaded off some hair's smack in the CENTER of my brow!!! I asked her what happened and she proceeded to tell me "your hair is thin there, I did not thread it off". Are you SERIOUS?! I told her that I felt a pinch there and that I did not walk in with that part of my eyebrow missing and she still insisted that my hair was thin and that is why there is a chunk of hair missing. She then proceeded to speak in Hindi to the owner (not knowing I also understood hindi because I don't look Indian) who came over me over to check what was going on, and basically said to the owner that I am saying it was her mistake and that my eyebrows are actually thin. I have been coming here for 3 years and have NEVER had this problem. Not to mention this same lady was trash-talking the previous client whose eyebrows she had done before mine. I should have just stuck with the people who normally do my brows and not let this lady, who talks badly about her customers, do my brows. To make things worse, one eyebrow is visibly thinner than the other. What I am most sad about is that the lady did not own up to her mistake and told me that my eyebrows are missing a chunk there naturally. Eyebrow threading was not a disaster but not the best. Owner waxed my face while talking to customers on the phone- felt like a rushed job and obviously hurt since no instruction given at all to ensure my skin didn't pull. My face was scabbed the next day in multiple areas but mostly from threading Luckily the wax wasn't too hot- she didn't even ask me if I was okay I am used to such poor customer service and basically rude aunties at threading places, but if you are going to charge these prices and have a shop in Mountain View I suggest working on your manners. My friend recommended me this place because I have never gotten my eyebrows threaded in the Bay Area before (I always do it when I fly back to Canada). This place is great. The woman doing my eyebrows was attentive and took her time sculpting and trimming my brows. I even got a nice face massage at the end. Yes, the threading hurts a little more than I am used to, but it's not THAT bad. I am surprised at the reviews complaining about the pain. The salon is not super fancy, but the people there get the job done well. I will come back here. read more

First off let me say I got a groupon here. I must have gotten it a while ago cause it expired Dec 6. Today is Jan 5. Had a Brazilian done here and first off... Gotta say they tried to be friendly but it didn't help when my clitoris was being yanked at and waxed (at least 6+ times). I'm an avid Waxer, grAnted I went 2 weeks more than I typically do. I've been waxing for more than 10 years and I've NEVER had my clitoris violated by wax ever. It hurts like CRAZY!!! Not only that the girl said my groupon expired so I have to pay the difference, even though I spoke with Sumi on the phone the day before and she had said "it's $29 whether you buy on groupon or in the shop, doesn't matter it is just $29 now". So when I heard that I had to pay the difference EVEN THOUGH THE PRICE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO $29 I almost just threw the tip and left. (Note I've had groupons expire on me and the shop person or owner ALWAYS honored the groupon, though it is my fault it expired these shop owners value business more than money) So I didn't throw the tip and leave because Sumi called the girls back and said it was ok to take my groupon and not pay a difference. All I want to say is A) strike one for waxing my clitoris more times than I care to remember B) strike two for trying to scam me into paying more for a service when the OWNER herself had said that the price has been changed to $29 whether I buy it on groupon or in person. Shame on you. This is no way to run a business.... And I would know... I'm a nurse with a masters in business. I am never coming back to this place again. At the end of an extremely rushed five minute session for which I had waited about an hour, I was BLEEDING from two spots above my left eye and on both corners of my lips. I was wondering why the threading was so painful, but the blood I saw when I opened my eyes explained everything. I agree with the other reviewer who mentioned that Sumi seems to try to squeeze in more appointments than she can handle. It's one thing if everyone has to wait a bit longer, but completely unacceptable if she rushes so much that she ends up tearing up someone's face. read more

This review is only for the Brazilian. I typically go to a place in San Jose for a Brazilian, but due to work I didn't have time to make an appointment there and had to settle for the closest area before leaving for vacation. They were very nice people but the Brazilian was probably the worst I've had. The area was not set up very professionally. The "room" was separated from a larger room by curtain. At first, I was willing to look over it, but then the other workers would chat right through the curtain and sometimes pull it back. Even though the woman who helped me with my Brazilian attempted to make it more private, it didn't really help. The woman used a honey wax that was rolled on for the first section? That didn't seem sanitary. Afterwards, she used hard wax so that was much better. As someone else also commented, the woman also rips out a large sections, this caused it to be more painful. I will not be returning here. I'm sure their other waxing services are fine, but I do not recommend the Brazilian at all. read more

The first time I went here, it was bad. The eyebrow threading was unnecessarily painful and waxing had left me with rashes. I told a friend about it and she said, "next time ask for sumi." I did that this time and I regret going a second time. Sumi was okay with the threading, and waxing my underarm was not so painful. I hated the wax application with a bottle (dont know how many underarms it has touched) as it sorta pulled my skin when she applied it. But after the waxing was done, I had to ASK her to wipe the waxed area with something...she was happy to just let me go without the after waxing process. I was okay with all of that, but I came home to find my underarm burning like hell and upon checking, found a huge rash/cut; not sure what it is, but it's awfully painful. I agree Sumi is a little cheaper ($10 for eyebrows/upperlip; $15 for underarm waxing) than other places, but I'd rather pay an extra 5 bucks than get myself burnt/cut every time I go here. I really really hope the rash is just temporary and is not something I got from the wax application bottle....hope it does not lead to an infection!! Sorry Sumi, I found you very friendly and really liked you; but am very unhappy with the service. I always go to Khoobsurat and they have never burnt me or left me in pain. A basic practice is to wipe the waxed underarm with a cool cloth, apply aloe vera and then powder it if the customer wants. It's that simple. Quick and dirty. The women know what to do and get you out quick. Please do not expect some spa day pampering service because that is not what you will get. I have threaded my eyebrows and upper lip for the past 3+ years so I am not new. A woman nearing her 40's serviced me. It was by far the most painful threading. She snapped her thread almost every 3 minutes. For the first time I was about to tear up. After holding out on the pain my eyebrows were shaped beautifully...but the journey..wooo! I've been going to this salon for a few years now because they've been the only place that seems to offer low priced and quick threading services. That's where the love stops for me. Yes, they are cheap ($10ish) and you can walk-in, but their customer service has severely declined. Granted, I don't have high expectations since it is a hole in the wall, but there is no excuse for bad customer service. The last time I went in was a few weeks ago and the technician was very rude, jerking my head from to side and even stopped during the middle of my service to chat on her phone. Welp girls, I finally got threaded and the experience wasn't as scary as I had imagined.. Walked-in on a Saturday and waited about 15-20 minutes. Sumi's assistant worked on my brows. I told her I liked them clean and archy but not too thin. She went for it and the pain was tolerable. Like getting multiple hairs tweezed at once but in a rhythmic fashion. I know my fullest brow shape potential and perhaps I am too picky but the end result wasn't a five star shape for me. My brows weren't as archy as I like and she took too much off the top of the brow in my opinion. However, the results weren't horrible, just A-OK. On the bright side, I usually break out after a wax so ladies with sensitive skin, this is the way to go! My skin was just fine days after my threading session. Another perk is the SUPER CHEAP prices. I mean 8 dollars for brows? What I steal!! I usually pay Christine at the Benefit Brow Bar 20 plus 3 dollar tip. The rest of the threading services are dirt cheap as well. I would definitely go back to get my upper lip done. Waxing and tweezing is just too painful! read more

I used to be very happy driving here for eye brow when Rosita was here and I would've given them a 4 star if I had written the review then but now she's gone and I've had Sumi do my eye brows for the last 2 times. I'm writing thus review based on the last 2 appointments with Sumi herself. Pros: -soft hands, not much pain compared to other places I've been -good price, 10$ for eye brows Cons: -expect wait when you get appointment from her on the phone, when she says it's not crowded, come in, it's usually ppl waiting still. -she didn't ask what I wanted so I assumed she looked at my eye brows that were pretty think and knew or remembered that I wanted thick before trimming so thin! - I asked her to clean it and make them as close to each other as possible, since one was already too thin. But even after the 2 requests I went out and I noticed in the car mirror that one is significantly longer than the other. I come back in and had to wait until next person's hair color was done!!I didn't have problem with waiting but I had problem that I had to come back and when I tell her they are nit the sane length, she asked did you want them the same length? I thought you wanted it like that!!! I'm all for saving money but not at cost of sacrificing the quality this much so I don't think I'll be coming back again. read more

I was running errands in the area last week, and needed to get my brows done BADLY. I read the Sumi reviews on yelp and decided to give it a try. Some of the comments from the other reviewers definitely rang true. There is no hand washing action going on. The eyebrow threaders' customer service is definitely lacking. There is some funny business with the appointments vs. not having appointments - some of the patrons copped a mini 'tude because I didn't have an appointment. I sensed that they have been frustrated by drop-ins from the past so I didn't take it personally. I was frustrated by the eyebrow stylist's lack of english skills - I wasn't completely sure that she understood that I really only wanted her to clean up my eyebrows (because I always get nervous that they're going to take off too much). I think that she did an OK job but not the best I've ever seen. It was cheap, but I doubt that I would return...even if I was shopping nearby again. I have been to much nicer places, with much nicer people, with much better skills for the same price...so I'll keep looking for my go-to place. read more
