I used to come to La Monique for pedicures since 2014 and absolutely loved their services, but the last few times we have gone the service has gone down. It specifically feels like the service has gone down post-Covid. The last few appointments they were rushing through the scrub, massage and the multiple layers of nail polish application. They even applied the nail polish outside of the nail bed and didn't clean it up. It just felt rushed and untidy by the end of it. The one time I got a manicure, the nail polished chipped on day 2 which was very disappointing. I won't be coming back. I used to come here years ago so I thought I would give them another try as my regular lady was on vacation. The salon looks a lot more dated and run down than I remember. I don't think they have upgraded any of their equipment for years but that's probably how they keep their prices down. I do have to admit that the technician did a good job on my pedicure and it looked good out the door, but it only lasted just over a week before it started chipping. Typically, I can go about 3 weeks or more before my pedicures start to chip, especially during these winter/spring months when I'm wearing mostly closed-toed shoes. With so many other salons available in the area, I'm not likely to come back. read more

PSA: This review is just for a pedicure. I have never gotten a mani here. My friend took me here because we were far overdue for pedis. La Monique is hidden behind Le Bou on Castro Street in Downtown Mountain View. The place is quite small with 7 or 8 pedicure chairs and mani stations fitting about 4 people. There is not much space. Thus, it is best if you make an appointment beforehand if you are coming on the weekend. Then again, this is true for almost anywhere. Pro: The pedi massage chairs are BRAND NEW! The reason this place is GREAT FOR A PEDI is because for $28 you get parrafin wax, the electric buffer, a foot scrub, massage, hot rocks, and a whole lotta other goodies. The polish job was just okay, and I didn't feel like she trimmed my nails that well. They also don't have as many color options as some other places. It is the foot prep where they shine here. The ladies were pretty quiet. They didn't talk to us, nor each other. But, they really did ensure we paid at the end - it was kind of awkward the way they did. $40 mani and pedi $28 pedi $14 Mani They use the mechanical files that look like the dentist teeth cleaning tools to file calluses on heels. I'm not sure how sanitary that is (?), but it is a useful service/good to know (as long as you don't lose your foot from it haha). The woman sitting next to me got extensive attention to her heels, while I was kind of casually filed/scrubbed. I maintain my feet pretty well, but I could have used/deserved more attention. That was frustrating to see, but my pedicurist made up for it in the leg and foot massage. I think I can say it was the most extensive massage I've received in the past year, and the longest I usually go between pedicures is about 2-3 weeks so I've had many a pedicure. It's a pretty small shop, and confusing to get to if you don't know where it is. There is a parking lot in back that you enter from the side and the door to the nail salon is fairly hidden. There is the suite number somewhere pretty obvious, so it is easy to find if you just pay attention. I entered from Castro and walked through the lobby of the office building. I would probably recommend just parking in the lot though, wish I knew it existed. I will definitely be adding La Monique to my go-to nail places throughout the South Bay. It may even replace my Santa Clara shop because A. SO is graduating, ending any need to be in SC and B. The last time I was in, I was VERY disappointed by the services I received. Oh, hello and I almost forgot. The "mention Yelp" deal is still in effect. I wish they left the parafin on longer, and if I go in again I will ask that they do so. Felt so good! I came for Ly's services: eyebrow wax! $15 bucks for my overgrown caterpillars to get waxed off (i sent in my tweezers for free sharpening) Ly was very nice and kind and got straight to work. I told her not too thin, and she said she isn't fond of thin eyebrows anyways, and not to worry. My eyes were closed, for obvious reasons but I wish I could see the process! Shape came out great, though one side was slightly longer and she didn't trim it as much as the other side (but maybe because my eyebrows are uneven and the hairs grow weird...). One star docked just because they weren't perfectly even, but great job nonetheless. One thing, she doesn't really prepare you for an eyebrow wax if it's your first time waxing parts of your face ie. talking, explaining, etc. Also, she doesn't pull your skin as taut as you'd probably want BUT I'm going to safely assume it's because waxing and plucking is not good for the skin as it tugs at the skin and something about the cells, therefore you get wrinkles and saggy skin earlier in life. I squeezed out a tear per eye, but got use to the pain. One more thing, they are located across the smaller street of Wells Fargo (not Castro), and behind Le Boulanger; they are not visible from Castro. read more

The last time I was in the Bay Area, I ended up at La Monique Nail Salon with a girlfriend of mine. We were just walking around and snacking on Castro when the mood struck us to get a pedicure. It was so nice for me since I'm very, very pregnant right now and unable to do my own toes well. haha Luckily, it was the right time of day (before nail rush starts) and we were able to get in with little wait. Turns out it was a perfect time to get my toes done because my baby shower was the next day and a henna artist made a beautiful design on my foot. I'd have been embarrassed to show it off if my toes weren't done! The pedicure I got was so relaxing and nice. It was a delux version with a scrub, hot stones, massage, and parrafin wax. The girl who helped me, Emmy, was great! She tolerated me changing my mind from no color to color with grace. haha The only thing that would make me pause before coming back to La Monique was that they're more expensive than what I'm used to. Of course, I don't normally get the 'delux' pedi on Castro in Mnt View either. For that area, I'm sure the prices are good. :) And I'd could be persuaded to splurge on myself here occasionally! I think that this was the worst pedicure I have ever gotten. For $28 for just a pedicure I was expecting different treatment. To be clear, Im not sure that the service is always like the service I received- I bet that they have plenty of worthy manicurists. But let me tell you about my experience. I got my pedicure exactly a week ago. It currently looks like Ive been walking around without regetting it done for a couple of months. I think that a lot of the problem had to do with the fact that I was a late appointment and the technician was looking to leave. A couple of my toe nails were cut crookedly. The nailpolish is chuncked on and already chipped. The cuticles were not cut. She did not take care to buff my heels thoroughly (just made the motion). The cherry on top came when she was putting the little flip flops on my feet while my nails were drying. She snagged my big toe with the shoe and the nail polish was messed up. Instead of taking the polish off and repainting that toe, she simply THUMBED IT and put nail polish ON TOP. WHAT!? Needless to say- that toe doesnt look good. Since she didnt speak english there wasnt much I could do. Overall, Im sure that they have great services. I saw the scrub. I saw the hot stones. But the service I received was half-hearted and not worth the price I paid, especially bc I now need to go somewhere else and have my pedicure redone. I wont be coming back. read more

(update) I am giving them one more star, because I appreciate the fact that they contacted me after this review to apologize for my experience, and I am going to try to go back, because hey everyone has an off day....when I go back I will update again my review. I was so sad over my experience here, after reading some good reviews. I got there and they were somewhat busy with a party of young girls, which they ended up arguing with for about 10 minutes about the girls not getting their full services. They were able to seat me in a pedicure station, but my pedicure was completely rushed, and not relaxing at all. Their implements were also not all clean. I could tell the buffer and the file had been previously used. They are good about how they apply their paraffin using separate bags for each guest. I watched how they cleaned the tubs though and they only do a once over with a sponge in-between clients, instead of sterilizing them according to state board procedures. The polish application did look nice, but given their standards of cleanliness I would hesitate to go back. read more

Nail salon in heart of downtown Mountain View that has great, thoughtful nail artists at work! The top coat (+'s): + Very accommodating when I had to bring my puppy to the salon. + Paid $5 for some work to get that gel polish off my nails. What a hassle to have them done in the first place by another salon. Worth the $5 to have someone take it all off. + Opened package of tools in front of me to show that everything has been sanitized. I assume that it was not for show. + Had some major cuticle work to be done and it was a real treat to have it cleaned to perfection + $14 for a manicure which includes the works: paraffin wax, sugar scrub, hot stone massage and yes of course the meticulous polish + Paid before the nail polish was applied which is the way to go. Yes you tip beforehand but thankfully my technician worked for it. + Credit cards accepted. Good because that ATM machine onsite worried me. Who carries cash these days?? The chip factor (-'s): - It was a slight pain to have to get up to go to the restroom to wash off the sugar scrub on my hands and arms. Typically I have hot towels wipe me down so it was a bit of a hassle. - The decor is a miss. Big mash-up of Victorian statues, wedding floral arrangements on a pedestal, and curtains with tassels. I've been here twice now for a regular mani-pedi. Both times, I felt like I was well attended to and my nails looked pretty nice. I appreciated that the parafin wax and hot stones were used as part of their regular and not an upsell. The one thing I really dislike is the wait - despite having called ahead an hour or so and made an appointment, both times I have had to wait an additional ~20 mins before I would get seen. It also felt like the ladies would have to go off and attend to something else for someone else while they were in the middle of working on me. I probably could have dealt with one or the other - but both jointly still felt like a total time drain. One of the worst manicures I've gotten in my life. The process itself wasn't bad - you get the hot stone massage and paraffin wax treatment but they have got to get rid of crappy nail polish that cracks within the same day and chips in no time. Once upon a time, I was a La Monique regular. Somewhere along the line, I started going to Capri, partially because communicating and getting an appointment is easier. Plus, I've only had one pedi failure at Capri, where the polish chipped in a day; otherwise the polish lasts for many moons. Anyway, the last two times at Capri had issues--rush jobs and then the issue with chipping. I WAS going to go back today, but needed a late appointment close by, and La Monique fit both bills. La Monique was never bad--but they've kicked it up a few notches! They are super, super aware of sanitation now, showing off the sanitation steps, although I always trusted them. They rid themselves of the stick-your-hand-in-the-wax machine, as part of this. All the ladies were dressed in lovely matching outfits, of red and black--nice touch. The between employee speaking was at a minimum and very quiet, really sort of pleasant, actually. Another noted improvement (not that this was done badly before) is attention to details on cuticles, perfect shape, etc. My goodness, did they work this angle, more so than I've seen anywhere in ages. I was told this was something they are now really focusing on, which is awesome. The best part was being reunited with Moui, always a lovely woman. As part of my sport manicure (read manicure for tomboys), she gave the most kick ass arm massage I have ever had in my life. I was in utter heaven. She is a trained massage therapist, and it shows. Moi gives one of the best massages EVER. My limbs are typically in some sort of knotted state due to my ridiculous workout schedule (gotta burn off those cupcakes, ya'll!)....and she worked some serious magic on my kinks during my quickie manicure on Saturday. It blows my mind I have been going here for as long as I have, but whoever said they have kicked it up a few notches is speaking the truth. It seems like LM always tries to better themselves from year to year. A few years ago it was adding a massage. Then hot stones. Then paraffin waxes. This year they notched it up by starting to put their already sterilized instruments into individual baggies to show you BEFORE they start working on you that they are sealed and clean. As a germophobe who has asked them previously to show me how they sterilize and clean....this new extra step soothes my inner OCD beast right up front. Dry, and in need of some TLC, the call from Mrs. T could not have come at a better time for my feet. Tragically starving for moisture, refreshing place served as an oasis for my pathetic toes. From the parking lot , the sun proof windows made it look a little sketchy. Upon entering, I was whisked away to an interesting location. A fish tank, a wax room in the back, draped curtains, 6 or so massage chairs with matching pedicurists/manicurists made this place very relaxing...or at least tried to. What I like most about this venue is the bang you truly get for your buck. 28 bucks for all this??? For real? WHAT? As Kramer says, "Jerry, all you need is a soak." Instead, I got a soak, plus some cleaning, a flash of the sanitary products to my liking, new polish, the automatic whiz machine, some paraffin wax, lemon for my feet, and a serious massage. For someone who is super anal on clean establishments, this joint had it all and then some. I now understand why Mrs. T loves La Monique, especially since she mentioned that the staff color coordinates their shirts. Definitely a steal, and my new place for sure! This place was rated Best of Mountain View for a few years until 2007 I believe. Don't think they're rated the Best anymore, but you'll see why in my review. I used to come here religiously for years. It is located right next to Le Boulanger right off of Castro St in Mountain View. There's also parking in the rear if you can't seem to find parking off of Castro. It's been years since I've been there, so not quite sure if the prices have changed. But a pedicure would be about $40. They seat you at a spa pedicure. You get a stone massage and paraffin wax. I'll admit, coming here is often a miss...meaning, their quality of service is so-so. They seem to breeze through your pedicure and get slightly fussy when they get a group of women who come in, but all the chairs are filled. They can't wait to get your butt out of that chair. Yet, sadly they're like that even on the slow days: They dip your feet into the spa, let it bubble for a few and then they work on cleaning off old polish, your cuticles and cutting down your nails. It's nice that they've got sterilized equipment though! (1 Star for that) They have all their tools in a sterilized bag, just like at the doctor's office. Then once they're done with that they give you a stone massage, which they breeze right through and then next thing you know you've got bags of paraffin wax on your feet. They sometimes try to cool down the wax on your feet. I think I even had one lady dip the bag in cool water, but that slightly defeats the purpose and I told her to stop. UGH...then they paint your nails and you're done. I think I only like this place because of the paraffin wax. I mean, that stuff does wonders. Even though I live in San Mateo, I'll drive down to Mountain View to get my pedicures. To me, going to La Monique's is a treat, because I know my toes will come out looking good. Their tools are always clean, you have a wide choice of colors to pick from, the massage and scrub is awesome, and you get a hot stone massage, paraffin wrap, etc. Just for $28! This is a great place to get your "dogs done". There are plenty of chairs and not likely a wait when you enter. The wall is lined with plaques they've earned as "Best in Mountain View". The pedi perks certainly prove it too! They are very attentive to every part of the grooming. A Dremel tool is even used on the callouses! Very sanitary! I like to smell how clean a salon is. Makes me feel comfortable and relaxed. Sit back in the chair and choose your massage while one of their pedi experts take care of the rest. once you are cleaned, de-calloused, trimmed, and softened, they follow up with a nice massage with hot stones. The color was pretty nice too! Bonus? That color stayed on til the bitter end! I trimmed my toes a few weeks in and it still looked good as new! When I tried to get it off myself with non-acetone remover (because I have gel nails) it fought me every step of the way! That's a good thing! haha I think this would be THE perfect palce for men to get their toes done due to the fact that they have the Dremel tools for the callouses. Second time here and I really don't get why this place has such great reviews. Worst nail salon ever! The woman who did my nails today spoke no English, and got mad at me when she couldn't understand me. I wanted to do shellac, but when she removed the old shellac and I saw that my nails were too week, I asked her opinion on wether I should do shellac again, or normal polish to recover my nails. She got mad at me. I couldn't understand well what she said, but I think she got mad at me for changing my mind. Really? She made me pay 5 dollars to remove the shellac nail polish from my nails! I was never charged to remove the old polish from my nails. But even if it was a normal thing, she said it in such a rude tone! It was like since you don't do shellac, I will charge you $5 for removing your old shellac. Then she went on doing my nails, I had previously asked for just a change of color, but she went on doing the complete mani (which costs $14 instead of the $10 for color change) But at this point I was so frustrated trying to get her to understand what I was saying that I just let her do it and paid for the full mani. Seriously, even if this is the last nail saloon in Mountain View, I will never get back here. Place looks dirty, people who work here are cranky and they look pretty unhappy. The setup - Clean interior, dimmed lights, antique furniture, and a decorative fish aquarium. At first glance, La Monique's Salon looked like a good place for a mani/pedi party. It had a cosy warmness to it and was inviting to try. Well, I didn't try, as you will read below, so my review is for a 90-second interaction with La Monique. The situation - There were two critical effeminate points that led me to visit La Monique's - 1. Conveniently located right below my office building. Down the elevator, out the double doors, La Monique's. 2. I *needed* certain asthetic work done. It's a simple procedure, and not too much to ask. I had an appointment to have it done two days later elsewhere, but looking in the mirror was horrifying. "WAX ME NOW" was written all over. Ladies, you know how I feel!! The scene - So, in the middle of the workday, I went downstairs, thinking it would take at most 15 minutes if they weren't busy. When I walked in, I saw one customer, and two staff members. "Great", I thought, "I'll be in 'n' out of here in a jiffy and no one at work would even notice". But then... after telling them what I needed, I was instructed to take a seat and wait. A few moments later, after a few exchanges of words, they gave me a business card and told me to call the number on the card (note: card read - La Monique's Salon. Same establishment, same phone number). I took the card, face VERY confused, and gave myself a moment to recover. You must remember... I needed it BAD. I am usually very sweet tempered, I tell you, but this place was pushing my buttons and wrongfully teasing my limits. Especially because I wanted it NOW and didn't see a valid reason why I couldn't get what I wanted. Why I don't know. Maybe they wanted to lash out my spoilt, unreasonable, prissyness just for fun? Just to see? Were they toying with my attitude? Desperate = Entertainment? Huh, huh, huh? Me: "Wait, what do I have to do?" Her: "You call Ly." Me: "Is she here?" Her: "Yes, she's in the back." Sure, I could have done my due diligence to figure out what was going on instead of draw myself to such big disappointment. But I felt like I demonstrated enough persistence and need. I still love La Moniques for pedicures, they are awesome and I've been coming here since 2003 on & off. Muoi is still a rockstar! Candy is also good for pedicures. In addition to their $28 pedi, you can also add on a scrub and mask for an additional $15 if you like. Sounds nice! Since I had taken off my acrylic nails, I had a manicure for the first time and it didn't last unfortunately. This seems typical of manicures though, not just here either. Mani/Pedi together is $40, manicure only is $14. They DO accept walk-ins if there is a technician available, but you're better off making an appt. I tried a second manicure here to see if it would last longer or if last time was a fluke. I sadly had the polish chipping and peeling off the very next day! So if I do have more manicures here, which won't be likely, I'll just consider it pampering as they do a nice hand/arm massage. (-0.5 stars). I also saw Ly Van, an esthetician that works in the shop for some treatments and she is great as well. You call a separate number to book her services. She does a great facial and I had a back facial that was amazing as well. I was very relaxed and falling asleep during my treatments even though I was in the midst of a busy salon! She is an OK waxer and tries hard to get any strays and not leave any wax on you too! However, Ly does basic bikini waxes only, no brazilians! I wish Ly would not use the wax w/strips, I wish she would go to the hard wax only as it hurts less. Give Ly a try, you won't be disappointed. Best pedicure of my life. period. I go here often. I love that they're open a little later than most places. My girlfriends and I head over after we've fed the children and get away for some mommy-time. The place itself is a little cramped and the chairs do not massage. But the experience is unbelievable, it's the equivalent of a "foot facial" several masks and scrubs, great oil massage and meticulous attention to detail when painting. I've been to La Monique's Nail Salon about 5 times in the past year. I have had mixed experiences... If you want to be pampered, this is the place to go. They do not (unfortunately) have massage chairs, but they more than make up for it with their services. Hot wax treatments and sugar scrubs... to be honest, I'm not even sure exactly what all they use but it feels amazing! The first time I went, although the pampering was nice, I was not a fan of the quality of my mani or pedi and they were done by 2 different staff members. I've checked out most all the other nail salons in the area since and then decided to give La Monique another shot. I am glad I did. Same great pampering and nice mani-pedi's. What a perfect way to spend a cold and blistery Sunday afternoon! Met up with some girlfriends and they took me to their favorite nail salon. To our surprise we were the only 3 ladies in the salon - awesome! That means all attention is on us -- it's like our own personal nail salon for the day! The cost is $40 for mani & pedi which is super affordable and includes your typical hand & food massages plus a nice hot stone massage. Can't go wrong! All the ladies were extremely nice and accommodating. I am extremely picky when it comes to the shape of my nails (shock ... wait, what? Nicole's picky? No way. Get out.) and they managed to get the shape perfect - without falter. ;) The only downside that I will note on my personal experience: later that evening I started getting chips and peeling on a few of my nails. Huh? Bummer! Black satin does *not* look as chic & hip with chips ... Possibly this is my fault as I used the UV light to dry them (I believe I've heard this can actually cause it to peel, etc.) and later that evening was ordered around a kitchen by a stressed host and had to slide these lovely li'l digits into some oven mits. The heat is not friendly to a hot new mani! My overall recommendation is to definitely check it out ... Even better, snag an appointment on a Sunday - you may get lucky and have the place to you & your girlfriends! read more
