3/9/26 My first experience with Sumida's Auto Repair. I brought my 2021 Toyota Avalon into Sumida's to schedule an appointment for a transmission fluid exchange. Pleasantly surprised, they were able to fit me in that day. Sumida's is extremely thorough and explained what exactly they had to do and why. Juan called me with an update, estimate and confirmed if I still wanted the service completed. They also found a loose vacuum hose which I knew of but assumed it was a for drainage. Super grateful for their honesty. I can't say enough about their service. Their five star reviews are well warranted. I've used many mechanics, a few were really good but none of them provided the stellar customer service and expertise Sumida's Auto Repair provided. I have been taking my Benz to the dealer and another shop for repair and services. But my friend recommended this place for us and said they are good, so, I give it a try when I needed repair. I called before I went down to make sure they have time to look at my car. It cost $216 just to check it out and this does not apply to the repair. Left the car there, with in a few hours, they call back and gave us an estimate. Since they need to wait for parts and they asked us to pick up the car and set up an appointment to bring it in later for the actual repair. It appears they are very busy, we need to wait a few days before they have opening. At this time, they told us if I pay cash, I can get a discount. I forgot if it is 5% or more. I wished they would have say something early on so that I can pay cash for my initial $216 fee. Make sure you ask about that cash discount deal. Anyhow, repair day come, drop off the car at 7:30am, get my car back by the end of the day. (They close at 5pm) Car is running OK for now. The mechanics work there look pretty young, I was wondering how experience they are, but I do not want to judge them by their age at this time. Time will tell if the repair is good. They did say they have a 12 months warranty for their repair which is good. (Update - two days after we had the car back, the check engine light is back on again! We have to take it back but we have to wait for a week before they have opening to check it. I hope the "warranty" will cover this and I do not have to pay extra. read more

This is the place... Take your car here at Sumida's Auto Repair on Kawaiahao Street in Kaka'ako as I can't gate keep the honesty here and the fact that they open at 7am! I had issues with my car as it starts to get old and worn so I decided to take it down for a check because I have been ignoring it but my car keeps me in check with it's needs and after seeing the dealership doesn't have any opening for over a week I decided that it was time. Walked in without appointment but hoping to get one in a day or two was surprised that they'd take a look at it and left my car there for the day only to find out that something was loose and just needed an adjustment which thankfully was an easy fix (for them) and it was ready to go the very same day...woohoo! Juan and his team is just amazing and the price of having your car taken care of is priceless on the road and to know that you have the team here that are knowledgeable and kind took great care of my stress level and I'm now able to drive with confidence. I am super disappointed with the service! I tried to schedule an oil change and was hoping to get more info on what is provided with that, not knowing what service A or service B is. I've seen all the adds on TV for the best service of the year 2025, but sadly I didn't receive it. I felt like I was a bother when questioning Juan! Later I found out how much they will charge me. I didn't see a huge difference in prices compared to the Mercedes dealer. I decided to go elsewhere! They obviously don't care about their customers. read more

I feel fortunate to have Sumida Auto Repair in my hood, Kaka'ako. Dropped my car off at 7:20 am and received a call to pick up at 9:06 am from the mechanic who serviced my car, and quickly explained in detail the work that was done on my car. I will reiterate that the premises are unusually clean, the staff is dressed nicely, but the highlight is the gentleman who handles the appointments and the front desk, Juan. When you enter a restaurant and the host/hostess is not professional it creates a bad feeling even before you sit down at a table. Unlike many other auto repair businesses I have supported, Juan is super friendly, knowledgeable and experienced on how to work with the Sumida customer. Especially women are weak to mechanics, so I'm very grateful that they give me various advice after repair and adjustment! This time, the wiper was creaking, so I was lucky to stop by because it was in stock, so I immediately replaced it and had the windshield washer refilled. And I was instructed not to wipe the glass of the car with Windex. Because it contains coating oil, it seems that the field of vision is blurred. That's why I was taught to use Windex in the house. I regretted that I had been using it without knowing it until now, so I bought a glass cleaner for the car and went home. Sumida is a family business and the atmosphere is friendly and very good. I've been coming here for a long time, recently I took my car (2007 civic si) into get the ac fixed, I thought the compressor was going out based off symptoms. They said it was the compressor too, after diagnosis. It was going to be a chunk of money to get that fixed, but I agreed. Later that day Juan from sumidas calls me and said they found a short, and when they looked at the relay it was burnt out. After they changed out the relay and charged the system, my AC is colder than ever. And they changed my CV axle too, all in half a day. My golfing friend buy/sells cars for a living and swears by Sumida's. So when our '04 Lexus GS430 overheated with a pop, I called Juan and he said to bring it. Tow truck dropped the car off at 4:15, and by the time we got home, he had it tested and an estimate ready for us to e-sign. 3pm the next day, Juan called and said the car was ready! He had some recommendations for future service items to consider since it is a 22 year old car. I inherited a car that probably wasn't driven for over a year. I needed to have it checked out and serviced so that I would feel confident driving it around. From the time I got there, I received good service. I was early but one of the workers was there and checked my car in so I wouldn't have to wait around. They called me when they were done checking it out to see what I wanted to have done. They were very informative and I never felt pressured to do anything. They are very accommodating and knowledgeable. The car was done by midday, sooner than I expected for all the work done. The shop is probably the cleanest auto repair shop I've seen. I must've spoke with four different employees and all were polite and helpful. For the type of work they do and the cars they work on, I feel you get your money's worth. Sumida's is a small repair shop that reminds me of my grandpa's auto repair shop on Kauai as a kid-- good mechanics with standards and no frills. Juan is front of house, scheduling, estimating and calling customers. He is personable, down to earth and tries to do right by people. I definitely recommend if you live and/or work in the area and need your car repaired, but can skip the shuttle ride and coffee and water niceties. People dropped by w/out appointment hoping to get them to look at their car. Some had to make appt and others they squeezed in since it was something minor. The place was clean. This place gets all my stars. I was recommended to Kevin by a girlfriend of mine who works at a service dealership. (That spoke a lot) I spoke with Juan over the phone complaining to him about my car making weird noises. As a female, I know nothing about cars. He told me to bring it in the morning so they can check on it, (no appt necessary) When I finally had the chance to do a walk in, he checked my brakes and turns out I needed to get them changed (I had a feeling.) There was no pressure either, he actually gave me the choice to drive off and go with the risk or getting it done on that day. Despite how many cars they had in their shop, it was like no big deal to them. Everything was professional from start to finish, they were very polite, and gave me a reasonable breakdown of how much I'd have to pay... Sumida's is always number # 1 choice of Auto Repair. The "S" class I am using for my transportation failed many times, and it was difficult to find repair center , because not too many places on this island knowledgeable about this particular model, and Sumida's the one who always rescued me with repairs. . Sumida's have deep knowledge of Mercedes -Daimler-Benz. Daimler viechles are extremely complicated, repair service requires special tools and computers, Sumida's have everithing neccesery to perform repairs or replacement , and no doubt they can repair any other makes a model. Terrible communication. I've been taking my car here for a few years now. Called to schedule a repair. They told me they would call me back with an estimate. No call for the rest of the day. I called back the next day, the person said someone would call me back with the estimate. No call. Guess they don't want our business. Hi Darin, I took my truck in on Sept. 11, 2025. You should have a copy of the invoice which Juan gave to me. I paid everything in cash like I did when Sumida's repaired my a/c several years ago. They DID check my truck and worked on it. But as I stated, I was told that they did what a manual(?) recommended but it didn't fix the problem. I'd need to replace the transmission which will cost about $9,000-$10,000 give or take and that's ONLY if they don't find anything else wrong. That was Juan's EXACT words. Juan even provided me with a printed copy of the recommended service. If you review that invoice, $179 was for "other service" or something like that. It does NOT state what that $179 charge was for. Below that charge was the $570+ for labor and the rest was for parts and tax. The bill came out to $789. I'll admit to being pissed at paying an obscene amount only to drive my truck away in the same condition I brought it in for. Of which $179 does NOT state what that charge was for! It can't be labor, because the labor was listed at $570+. Still, the guys were super nice which is why I gave 2 stars read more

My vehicle started making a noise while driving on the freeway. When I pulled over, I saw my bumper was coming off and dragging on the tire. I needed this fixed asap. It was not safe. If ripped off, I could not only harm myself and further damage my vehicle, but harm other drivers on the road by creating a road hazard. I have a tight schedule with work, school, and kids to transport. I was really worried about getting this fixed efficiently and quickly as possible. I pulled into Sumida's and was greeted by Kevin. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and prompt. He quickly had my car repaired and safe to drive! I arrived so stressed, and concerned the damage may be bigger than I was realizing. I have my reservations going to car dealerships and mechanic shops being a woman. (Stereotyping myself) Being one who does not know anything about cars , and have being taken advantage of in the past. Kevin and the staff at Sumida's really share the Aloha spirit and culture. I felt I was being given honest advice and they stood on integrity with no sacrifice to quality work.
