8-23-2023 I had dropped my vehicle off to get new break pads and sensors. I had pre-bought break pads and sensors and unfortunately had grabbed the incorrect break pads, which that was my fault. But here's where the situation turns into a yelp review, I had dropped the vehicle off, and received a call not long later. They told me they couldn't fix my car due to "frozen calipers". They gave me a quote to fix it, 2200. Let me break this down for you, I've included a photo. Let me remind you, i had explained that I ONLY wanted break pads and sensors due to the fact I'm selling the vehicle. 160 an hour, Mercedes break flush? I never asked for my break fluid to be changed out. My vehicle goes through regular checks at the dealership, I had this done about two years ago. Now for parts , ALSO this is ONLY my front tires, not all 4. Only 2. Break fluid, $30, again something that I did NOT ask for, but let's continue Break sensors, the exact brand for my car is $15.99, they told me I had bought the incorrect ones. On the quote it says $41??? Break pads,quote says $201.47 average price for break pads is around 50-70 dollars. Rotors, quote says $314, this could possibly check out, average price for a rotor that matches my vehicle is 113. One Caliper, $656, the exact match for my vehicle was found online for 200??? Anyways, I had gone to another mechanic for a second opinion. I don't have 2,200 to spend on two front break repairs. I'm selling the vehicle. This mechanic (who shall not be named due to privacy reasons) said they saw nothing wrong with my calipers. My rotors, pads, and sensors were fixed for $635, my vehicle has been driving amazing. I'm not sure where all these prices came from. It was generally confusing especially after discussing with family friends who are mechanics. The other thing that had bothered me was as I was trying to leave, possibly a worker? A friend of a mechanic? Not sure, wanted to buy my vehicle. Just seems a bit unprofessional One of the workers was friendly though, younger guy. I'm not sure if these prices are just higher because my vehicle, they thought they could get money out of me, I'm female, there are plenty of different factors. Awesome shop downtown that was recommended to me by my co-worker for a safety check. I was looking for somewhere since Jiffy Lube stopped doing safety checks in 2020. Wah! I called Sumida's and asked them if I needed an appointment for a safety check, in which the guy asked me when I was coming. I said probably after work sometime, maybe around 4:30. He said probably no need, but try to call ahead. The day I went in and called ahead and they said it would be no problem to take me in. The only hard part was finding the place. There's a sign for autobody repair outside, but it doesn't say Sumida's, so I passed by it. It doesn't look like a typical repair garage - it looks like you're pulling into a downtown parking structure! Once you pull in, though, you'll see the sign that says Sumida's. They greeted me right away and gave me the safety check. I didn't even have to get out of my car! Afterwards, he processed my payment of $25 from my card and off I went. The best part about this garage is that it's open until 6p, which is great for the after work crowd. I also love that they don't make like it's a chore or hassle to fit you in without an appointment. Called this company after finding them on yelp when my car broke down nearby. Car overheated and I was waiting for a tow that took over two and a half hours so I decided to yelp since I was near kakaako. At almost 4pm on a busy weekday they answered their phone quickly and told me to bring it in. Since the car was cooled down I took a chance and drove it there which was about 2 blocks away from my stalled location. When I arrived I was greeted promptly by Juan and explained the situation. Just picked up this used car from a private seller two days prior and it overheated nearby on busy Queen street. He pulled up the hood and noticed my radiator cap was missing so he told me what he was going to do (replace cap, add coolant, do a pressure test, etc.) and made sure to run the car afterwards to see how the temp and coolant held up. Needless to say I was on my way in under an hour for $90 and a bit nervous because I was putting my car to the ultimate test - the dreaded prime time traffic drive from town to the west side at 4:45pm. Every time I hit a stop in traffic I kept watching my temp and it held just fine. Made it home an hour later and the car was working just fine. Sumidas is my go to shop and I've been bringing my Lexus here for a couple years now. They recently moved to 866 Kawaihao st which is still convenient and close to downtown. Also, they have a nice big sign so you can't miss the shop. I called them last week to schedule a day and took my car in this week for a routine maintenance. I've been bringing my car here for safety checks, routine maintenance and they had replaced my brakes the other year. Ive even had stopped by on a whim when my tire pressure was low and they checked it right away and put air in all my tires. If I have any issues with my car they are definitely my go to shop. But for her to ask me to post her review on this business on her behalf must mean they did an outstanding job (her and her husband are tough critics). Gotta hand it to Kevin and Juan, they rock! I called Sumida's after my check engine light came on. Making an appointment was painless and they were able to see me a few days later. After examining my SUV, Kevin called to tell me that there were a couple of things going on with my vehicle. He explained that there was a heating element in my Bluetec tank that went bad and would cost quite a bit to repair. However, he was honest and explained that the heating element was meant to heat the Adblue in cold weather states, and that it was not really needed in Hawaii. Given that, I chose to forego the expensive repair. My other issue (which I already suspected) was that my brakes needed to be replaced. He recommended a sumo brake pad that is supposed to last forever, and so far so good! Kevin's prices were very reasonable and the service was top notch. Thank you Kevin! I will be back! read more

And they charge very fair prices (my BF is always pleasantly surprised by the prices). They are also very efficient and timely. And it doesn't hurt they are conveniently located in downtown near where we work. Also, years ago, I had a 2000 Kia Sportage that had this mechanic rattling which effected the feeling when I used the brakes. I had gone to 2 separate Vietnamese mechanics per the advice of my Vietnamese mother (never again), but both thought they repaired it, charged several hundred dollars and then maybe 2 weeks later the same issue would return. So then, my aunt referred me to her friend Kevin. He took the time to test drive my car and he figured out what was wrong. He proceeded to fix the actual problem at what felt like a very fair price. I was looking for a place to get my safety check in downtown Honolulu and I came here because my former colleague recommended them. I drove into the garage where the sign said "Mei Lim Service Center" and parked my car off to the side; the upper levels of this place is a parking garage so don't block vehicles coming in/exiting. I saw the "Sumida's Auto Repair" banner hanging on the wall so I walked to the office and told them I needed a safety. The person comes out with a tablet and takes a photo of my documents. He does all the checks inside and outside and takes a few more photos of the car and then, we're all done. I love that they are efficient and there was no line. My car's oil indicator light was on and my oil pressure was going from high to low. Firstly, I was scared that my engine was going to lock up so I stopped driving it. Second, I was scared of the cost to fix it but there was no way around it. So I checked Yelp for locations walking distance to work and found Sumida's not too far away. They had good reviews so that was a bonus! I called them in the morning and they were able to see my car the same day. So I took it over and hoped for the best! They called me later in the morning and let me know what they recommended and kept me informed of where they were in the process. They ended up having to order a part so I picked up my car and brought it back when the part was in. I felt very comfortable with all the workers there. Everyone was very friendly and professional.
