There are not many places like this anywhere in the GTA, that compare to it. It's worth the trip here, and from downtown Toronto, it's a fraction of the multi-hour drive to Montreal if you have a craving for smoked meat. Now that the nearly 50-year-old institution known as Katz's Deli & Corned Beef Emporium on Dufferin Street has sadly closed down, along with another nearly 50-year-old Toronto landmark Yitz's Delicatessen on Eglinton Avenue West, and Caplansky's midtown deli on College Street, there's been a void in the scene with huge shoes to fill. I don't know if I'm really qualified to review Sumilicious, because I'm not really a "Montreal smoked meat (MSM) guy", and obviously many more experienced and enthusiastic Yelpers are. This place also got HUGE props on Chowhound, so I have to at least help get it on the radar as a legit place. I AM a "loaded poutine" kind of guy, however, so I am qualified to review the smoked meat poutine (which I only remembered to photograph as it was nearly gone). It's good, and the gravy and fries go well with the meat, but it definitely committed a "poutine sin" by not having copious amounts of squeaky curds - it was seriously lactose deficient. In other words, and to paraphrase the commercials of my youth: more cheese, please. The under-the-radar entrance was near lots of parking, and the inside was exceedingly clean. The inside itself is pretty spacious too, which is deceiving from the outside. That's because the owner his name is Sumi worked at Schwartzs for 30 years and brought his knowledge with him to Toronto. WOW!!! This place is a hidden gem. We were deciding what to eat on a rainy Saturday. So I started to browse around and we decided to grab some smoked meats at Sumilicious. I did some homework and found out the owner came from Schwartz in Montreal. The location of the restaurant is not in the main building, rather it is right by the ICICI Bank building. Finding parking wasn't too bad given it is a Saturday afternoon with a grocery store located in the same premise. So we found the entrance tucked away in the corner of the building. Always an entry to yummy food. Let's get started here. We got inside and found decor to be simple. We then started browsing the menu on the wall and decided to go with smoked meat poutine and a smoked meat sandwich combo plus a cherry cola. We waited not long and the food came out in about 5 - 7 minute. I opened my box of poutine and I was hit immediately with the aroma of the smoked meat. Then I took a bite of the smoked meat, my eyes were lit and began to inhale my food. It was this good. Then I tried the sandwich we ordered, the meat melts in my mouth! And the mustard is matched so well to the smoked meat. Had a bite of the pickle and that was good balance to the oily food we have. Note: I said WOW about 5 times during my meal. Just saying... Service is amazing. Owners are great and friendly. They helped us to choose the cut of meat and recommended we get the medium cut. This place is like the mom and pop shops in the local neighbourhood. Got the smoked meat sandwhich for $13 with "hot mustard" which was indeed spicy. However for $13 I was expecting a 10" sandwich, but was disappointed with the sandwhich that is smaller than the size of a fork. The meat had flavour to it but with only just the meat and no other condiments except mustard, I had to add my own stuff when I got home. When I worked nearby, I would come here practically every other day. With the lockdowns and changes to my job, the opportunities that I have to indulge in this outstanding meat is far less frequent. But today, I was in the area and... wouldn't you know it, it also happened to be the restaurant's 4th anniversary (April 27, for those counting) - the type movie-worthy coincidence that just begs for an update. What I can say is that, compared to my first review, some things have changed, and others things have remained the same. What's the same? Crave-satisfying meat, custom cut (personally recommend medium). Saucy, cheesy poutine Outstanding customer service ...and what's changed? Well, this restaurant got so popular that calling in to order is a lot more difficult than it used to be because the phone is buzzing more than when it first opened (...with good reason!) So give yourself more time. Oh, they also changed the bread - it's less dry now (see how they take feedback!!!) AND they serve coleslaw with the sandwich too. In fairness, the prices have gone up as well - but I think that's a universal change everywhere. There is still no better place in the GTA to satisfying the smoked meat craving. So I drove 30 minutes each way on a Saturday to have a smoked meat sandwich at Sumilicious. Apparently, this is what you do when you want the world-famous Schwartz's from Montreal but you don't want to drive the full 5 hours. Sumilicious has not been around since the 1970s like some of the classic GTA delis. What it lacks for in tradition, it more than makes up for in flavor. The restaurant is very simple and very consistent with its surroundings. It's a fairly small place on the edge of a strip plaza. You order and pay for your meal and they call you over when its ready (about 5 minutes when it's not busy). In addition to sandwiches, they have various kinds of poutine, including smoked meat poutine (which I'll definitely try next time). They also offer smoked chicken and duck (entire bird) for special orders. I ordered an ordinary sandwich combo as it was my first time. My sandwich was topped high with meat (smoked inhouse) as well as a generous amount of mustard. It had that beautiful Montreal flavor without being too salty. The fries were perfectly crispy and well-seasoned. The sandwich came with a dill pickle which (dare I say) is on par with just about any classic Deli in Toronto. I live a short walk from Centre Street Deli which has some of the best smoked meat sandwiches in the GTA. Yet I was willing to drive to Scarborough to try this place. Missing Schwartz? This place is the next best thing if you don't want to commit to an 8 hour drive down to Montreal. Had to try the smoked meat sandwich, and the karnatzel (sausage). The flavour was there, but some cuts were on the dryer side. Could have just been a leaner piece of meat. Overall pretty good, but nothing to rave about. Poutine was decent, but there wasn't a lot of curds (definitely no squeaky cheese!) and the fries weren't crispy. Smoked Meat was slathered in gravy - not a complaint - so I couldn't really TASTE the meat. It didn't really blow my mind. If you're heading out here, I'd probably get the Smoked Meat Sandwich (~$12) instead of the poutine. But I've heard that the meat portion is quite generous, so be in the mood for meat! P.S. In the same way that I prefer Snowdon Deli in Montreal to Schwartz's, so do I prefer Centre Street Deli in Toronto to Sumilicious. There are two main reasons. (1) The smoked meat: The Smoked meat at Centre Street Deli is almost the exact taste and texture of that of Snowdon Deli. To my taste it exemplifies perfection. That at Sumilicious is much the same as that of Schwartz's. I find it a little dry and crumbly. The bottom line is that it is just a matter to taste. (2) The variety of the menu. I find Centre Street Deli's menu to be much more varied than that of Sumilicious. At Sumilicious you can get deli meats, a steak and poutine that's about it. At Centre Street, you can get all of those(not including the steak) but many more including soups, salads, breakfast and most Jewish American foods. My original thought was to drive home and eat my sandwich. When I got into my car, the yummy smell of my sandwich caused me to eat it before driving off. You get a generous (I'm talking a ton) of smoked meat in your sandwich. The mustard and bread were perfect. The smoked meat was flavourful and juicy. It was delicious! You need two hands.
