This is a quick Togo place for chicken teriyaki or sushi, kind of like what you get when you go to the mall. They do have a few small tables to eat in if you want, but the AC wasn't on so the restaurant was really hot. On Thursdays they have a chicken teriyaki bento special for $9, a great deal. Food is cooked fresh everytime. The staff is cordial. The restaurant looks organized, but the tables mustve been wiped down with dirty water bc there was a greasy film. We were really craving chicken teriyaki, so we decided to go to Sumiyaki Japan in Metuchen. I like this place because they have parking available and the food is usually pretty good. It had been a while since our last visit, so we thought it would be nice to go back. We got there around 8 p.m., and the staff let us know they closed at 9, which was fine since we weren't planning to order a lot anyway. We ordered miso soup, chicken teriyaki, and a shrimp and beef bento box with noodles and shrimp tempura. The bento box was tasty, but there wasn't much beef or shrimp; it had a lot more noodles than protein overall. Since we told them we were dining in, I was a bit surprised that the miso soup came in a plastic cup and the chicken teriyaki was served in a to-go container. Maybe it was for convenience in case we stayed late, but we finished and left by 8:30, so they still had time before closing. The ambiance was okay, nothing fancy but comfortable enough for a quick meal. Overall, the food was okay, but next time if I'm in the mood for something quick, I'll probably just order takeout instead of dining in. read more

Sumiyaki Japan is a decent spot for sushi in the Metuchen area. First, I got the lunch special which comes with chicken teriyaki, rice, and one regular roll -- I got the lobster salad roll. The chicken teriyaki and rice were pretty standard and came out nice and steaming. I had the lobster salad roll, but also tried the spicy tuna and volcano roll. All of these rolls were pretty solid and enjoyable, though not the best sushi I have ever had. I also tried the fried rice, which was about the same quality as Six Flags fried rice, so not great. However, the price was pretty reasonable. I did find the service here to be unpleasant due to one employee. She had a very unhappy look on her face and did not seem happy to answer any of our questions. First thing I asked was if they had a lunch special (since it was on their website, but I didn't see anything in store). She said "no" and then shortly after asked what I was looking for and rang me up for the lunch special. I also paid extra for fried rice, and received white rice. When I brought this to her attention, she did not respond and just walked away. She did end up bringing us two plates of fried rice, which made up for it. The interaction was still very cold and not what I expected. I will say, another employee here was very nice. She brought out our food with a smile on her face and was happy to answer any questions. The other employees were also pleasant. In terms of ambiance, this place is nothing special. The seating area is nice, but this restaurant is definitely not the nicest sushi place I have been to. Once again though, I do feel like I enjoyed a pretty cheap meal, so I am not complaining. I had a good experience overall at Sumiyaki Japan, though the service could be better. read more

Today we tried Sumiyaki for lunch. The Beef Teriyaki was amazing and a giant portion for the price. I love the meals being served in to go boxes to make it easy if you want food for later. Their in house ice cream was also amazing. Definitely recommend this place. read more

Cooks and crew were busy working on pick-up/Uber/Doordash orders. Never really had an issue here except for the restaurant occasionally running out of brown rice. Other than that, the staff is courteous and the chicken teriyaki is tasty. Can't really attest to anything else on the menu, although I am curious about trying their take on the chicken burrito. I really don't mind this place and traveling a town over to grab teriyaki. I finally got around to trying out this new restaurant in Metuchen, NJ. The staff here is friendly but they looked a bit confused when a customer comes in. I think that they are wondering if the customers are picking up or dining in. They have a lot of customers coming in to get take out but not much customers inside eating. Decor: They have some seating outside for the customers if they want to enjoy the outdoor weather. They also have plenty of seating inside of the restaurant. Their bathroom seems very clean and even has a little table with a plant on it. Chicken Teriyaki: The chicken teriyaki has enough flavor and is actually pretty tasty. The white rice is not too soft or too hard and is cooked perfectly. The vegetables that came with it needs a little more flavor because it tastes really bland and does not go with this dish. Most of my reviews take into account my experiences pre and post-pandemic. Sumiyaki still holds up in either era. During the summer and fall months, they have a pretty relaxed outdoor eating area which looks even better at night. With the neighboring Whole Foods at walking distance, you can pop-in for some quick Japanese eats. Place just opened about three months ago just across Wholefoods, in the same area of downtown Metuchen, NJ. The sliced chicken bento is moist and soft. Well cooked with sautéed veggies and salad. The fried dumplings comes with California roll, too. It's delicious. Same also with their beef bento. The beef were sliced, soft and well marinated! Taste good. Clean and well lighted restaurant. Serving is average for one person. The price is right, too. Self service style restaurant. Serving Staff are courteous and helpful. Separate clean Men and Women's bathroom. Have always wanted to eat japanese food but never really had the opportunity in my hometown of Perth Amboy. After a random impulse, I ordered the Chicken Teriyaki Bento along with a Ramune with zero expectations. My oh my, when my order arrived i was drooling!! The delicious smell was seeping out of the package and I couldn't wait to dig in! The shrimp tempura was crispy and it was in the container for the whole 25 minute drive!! I've never been a big fan of sushi either but I ate all the california rolls that came in the bento box. The chicken itself was nice and tender, everything you'd expect! Love how the chicken was placed on top of the rice too, allowing the juices to add more flavor onto the rice. As for the salad, i'm not sure what kind of dressing was added but it was unexpectedly spicy. That didn't stop me from taking it all down though, haha. The food was incredible. Sharing the same lot as the Whole Foods Market plaza in Metuchen, this teriyaki place is a welcome culinary addition. We only tried the basics -- chicken teriyaki, seafood udon noodle, the bento box and a few stacks of sushi. Everything comes out great and as expected from a teriyaki fastfood spot. The udon is delicious, packed with lots of seaweed and shrimp, and the bento is tasty without being too salty. The price is reasonable and comparable to the experience and portion. This is one of my go-to lunch places due to the low prices and free WiFi! This is a fast-casual restaurant, so it is not a sit-down, but the food will be brought to wherever you have seated yourself. I was worried that the portion size would be too small or that the fish would be of low quality due to the prices, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that that wasn't the case. I've ordered the Volcano Roll, 2 Roll Special, Shrimp Bento Box, Shrimp Tempura, Udon, Chicken Dumplings, and Shrimp Teriyaki. All entrees were filling on their own and are around $10, and since you do not have to pay tip, this is very affordable. The sushi is decent quality and thankfully I've never gotten sick or felt weird after eating here. The rolls do not have as much rice in comparison to those from other sushi places, but this makes sense for the price. Even though there's less rice, there are more rolls than the average order. For the 2 Roll Special, you get 8 of each roll instead of 6 like other sushi places I've tried. I wish that the packaging that the rolls came in had a section where you could put your soy sauce, allowing you to dip your rolls in. They only have this in the Bento Box packaging. Thus, I'm always having to just put my soy sauce on top of my rolls, which I don't really like because I'm not really controlling the amount. The teriyaki bowls are cheap, but you get a decent amount of veggies, rice, and meat. Sumiyaki doesn't have the best teriyaki sauce as it's a little too sweet, but I still enjoy it from time to time. The poke bowls come with a lot of veggies and rice, but I do wish there was more meat to balance with it. The udon has a good balance of noodles, veggies, and protein, and it is the perfect serving size for one person. If you're craving sushi or Japanese food for quick and cheap, Sumiyaki Japan is your best bet! read more

The avocado tasted like chemical/rubbing alcohol, I tried each ingredient separately to pinpoint what this odd taste was and couldn't identify it as every ingredient tasted off. Glad a place like this has finally come to metuchen. Having gone during the "soft opening" I was concerned that the quality would be lacking or the portions would be small, etc etc. This just wasn't the case here. All of the staff was extremely friendly and excited to help and offer suggestions. The food is cooked right in front of you so you know it's fresh and the sushi is made to order as well. I got takeout this time because my whole family was eager to try it and even after a small detour and another 10 minute ride home the food tasted hot and fresh and none of the fried items were soggy. The portion sizes here are huge. We got two different bento boxes and two sushi rolls. Between three people we were concerned this wouldn't be enough but once we started eating we realized how much was really there. Tons of meat and rice. Personally I think the chicken was better than the beef but that doesn't mean the beef wasn't good. Both I would get again. Overall this place isn't going to compare to your favorite hibachi or sushi restaurant but for the prices and portion sizes this will easily be a fast dinner or good lunch. read more

This review is for their sushi. I ordered 4 rolls with delivery by uber eats and thought they were good. The problem was that the rolls were very small. There are 8 pieces but 1/5 the size compared to other places. If you order from uber eats they will charge you regular non discounted price for each roll $6.49. While if you order takeout or eat at the restaurant it's $5 each or any 2 for $8.99. Best bet is not get delivery from here if you an help it. Looking at the menu, it's worth stopping in because sushi and bento boxes look like good values. read more

I stopped for hot green tea here, I should've followed my instinct when all three mil stop to think when I asked for hot green tea. when I got the tea I was so shocked they gave it to me in a plastic cup the cup was so hot I couldn't hold it so they gave me a red cup to put inside that one. normally I would've asked for my money back but I didn't feel well and I was just in such shock I just left. I like this place very much. It's similar to Maki of Japan in Menlo. The place is clean and roomy. The bathroom is clean so that's a plus. The staffs are very nice and will bring your food to your table instead of calling you. You can either get a teriyaki bowl or poke bowl, bento box, or sushi. I usually come here for a quick bite. I was hungry after work with no clue what to eat when I suddenly remembered there's a new Japanese place in town. First impressions: the decor is lovely. Nice dark wood, everything is cooked in the front of house, clean (well they did just open). The bathroom is nice and roomy. They had some French paintings inside and while it's not a big deal at all, personally I would have added more Eastern flair. But eh. It works. The menu is somewhat small as it is more of an express restaurant. Basic variety of fish (tuna, crab, eel, salmon, shrimp tempura) and a few teriyaki combos with chicken, beef and shrimp. Decent amount of traditional appetizers like miso soup, avocado salad, edamame etc. Prices are very inexpensive. If you get only one item the most you'll spend is 12 bucks. That's awesome for this area. One minor issue is that the specialty rolls do not have descriptions next to them, so you won't know what's inside until you ask. The employee at the register mentioned they would be re-doing the menu soon. For my meal I chose to do a beef and shrimp teriyaki combo with brown rice and the kani salad. The salad was good, the crab meat is real based on what the cashier said. Comes with a crunchy topping and cucumber. Nice and light. The shrimp and beef bowl was pretty damn good! The portion was quite generous. I opted to get it with brown rice which is 50 cents extra. I could only eat a small amount and I'm excited for the leftovers tomorrow.
