This is a large Japanese restaurant with a pleasant atmosphere and decent service, but the food lacked the delicacy and balance that I usually associate with authentic Japanese cuisine. The cod was overly sweet and overwhelmed the natural flavor of the fish, while the salad had far too much dressing, making it feel heavy rather than fresh and light. Portions were generous and the restaurant was comfortable, but the flavors seemed adjusted more for a general audience than for those looking for a traditional Japanese dining experience. Overall, it was an acceptable meal, but not a place I would choose when craving authentic Japanese food.

Impressed by the to-go packaging and size of the bento box! Appreciated that the teriyaki sauce was served on the side because often times restaurants apply too much sauce for my liking. Miso soup was flavorful and had lots of tofu and seaweed. Shishito peppers and seaweed salad were perfect sides!

This place is directly across the street from my chiropractor, so I decided to give it a try. I loved their lunch special options. For $29 you get an appetizer, an entree, and a miso soup. I ordered the Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice and the Chirashi Bowl. Both were DELICIOUS! The Crispy Rice was perfectly crispy. And the sashimi on the Chirashi Bowl was fresh and melt in your mouth. The service was top notch as well - super friendly staff, and the ambiance was nice, clean, and spacious with lots of natural light. Highly recommend!

Food was delicious, service was NOT it Stopped by at 2pm didn't realize they close at 2:30. Host/Waitress was rushing us the moment we sat down if you don't want to take anymore customers in why accept them to sit? It was our first time and she was rushing us to pick something after sitting for one minute (not even exaggerating) We asked a few questions about the menu & had confusion about the rolls she explained the differences but then it seemed like she went over to the chef's and told them we were confused and they were laughing??? Food was brought out fairly quickly except for my main dish which was brought out 5 minutes before they were supposed to close not sure how Im supposed to eat everything in 5 minutes but host kept coming to our table in a rushing manner VERY UNCOMFORTABLE we could barely enjoy our food. She kept trying to put things away she brought ginger then wanted to take it away after she had JUST placed on table. She was rushing me to pay the tab as well It was quiet inside not super busy, don't recommend for the service but food was pretty good

Wow! Summer Fish & Rice is so popular for lunchtime. Lots of customers were meeting people for business lunches over sushi and enjoying the natural sunlight that radiates from the floor to ceiling windows. Sushi bar and smiling chefs in the corner of the restaurant are also part of the fun. Now that's what I call mixing business with pleasure! We ordered from the lunch special menu (available Monday thru Friday from 11:30am to 2:30pm). I got the grilled salmon teriyaki. It came with a 4 pieces of vegetable tempura, white rice, a house salad, and edamame. I can't eat edamame so I got an extra house salad instead. Love the ginger dressing on the salad. It was a very healthy and satisfying meal. I enjoyed everything. My dining companion ordered the miso cod and chose the black rice to accompany it. It was melt in your mouth delicious. The black rice was so special and pretty because it turns purple when you cook it. This lunch special was served with a cucumber salad and miso soup with mushrooms. Delish and also good for you! For dessert we went for the Nutella cheesecake. It came with whipped cream. Also delightful. Rich enough that it was easy to split but lite enough that it complemented the meal very well. Prior to this visit, I had only been to this restaurant for dinner which was also nice but it was definitely a solid choice for lunch so I'm glad I gave it a try in the daytime. Metered parking can be found on the street.

Love coming to Summer Fish & Rice! Just like the last time I was here it was for DineLA because they offer such fabulous options. This time around I got the albacore cappachio, blue crab handroll, and the Ebisu roll. Also we couldn't resist ordering the crispy rice which wasn't part of the DineLA but so worth ordering. They start your meal off with miso soup that was excellent. Also part of the DineLA was a limited drink option so I got Asahi beer. Service was great and quick. Parking is super easy. Looking forward to my next visit!

I love this Japanese restaurant! Nice ambience- clean, bright, stylish, wonderful servers, with delicious and well-prepared food & beautiful presentations- even the ginger is 5 star- not too sweet - delicious- perfect texture. They use the best ingredients- I'd like to eat everything on the menu

A small, casual restaurant with some terrific food and quietly attentive service. I usually try to visit during "off hours," as this intimate place can be fairly busy (and a bit noisy) at peak lunch and dinner times, and I'm always rewarded with consistently delicious, beautifully prepared and presented dishes. I particularly enjoy the luthe salmon teriyaki, miso soup, tempura vegetables, and the variety of rolls. Highly recommend.

Stumbled upon this cozy, hidden gem after passing by it several times when I was in the Beverly area, and I'm so glad I finally got to check it out! I was surprised to find out they were Thai owned (since most Japanese restaurants in LA seem to be Korean owned), but the quality of their sashimi, menu offerings, and sake selection definitely scream authentic Japanese. I went with their $29 lunch combo, which came with a delicious and hearty miso soup, your choice of appetizer (baked mussels for me) and a main course (chirashi for me). I was pleasantly surprised at how incredibly fresh the sushi was, and as a solo diner, I had the pleasure of being seated at the sushi bar, where I got to watch the sushi chefs work their magic as I ate my lunch. Every cut of fish in my chirashi was surprisingly fresh and well cut, and I also thought the baked mussels were made well, although a teensy bit too salty for me. Service was very nice and friendly, and this spot is nice but casual, making it perfect for a business meal, quick meal with friends and family, or even a date. Highly recommend checking this little gem out for incredibly fresh and high quality sushi, and supporting a small, Asian-owned business!

SFR is trying hard - fast service and an interesting menu. Recipes are on the simplified side for fusion Japanese dishes. Prices are typical for the lower BH area between $20-30 per item. Pricey yes, but rent is high here. Very loud interior because there's no dampening on any walls or ceiling, so it sounds like a quite noisy east coast cafe. (Probably not the best for 1st dates unless off peak hours) Fried items were crisp and hot but otherwise unremarkable. Fusion rolls are their best items - with adequate serving sizes and interesting varieties. Hand rolls (Temaki) were too expensive for what you actually got - a single half sheet of nori wrapping a standard roll content but not pressed. Yes, technically it's "hand rolled" but a far cry from even the most standard cones.(see photo) Sashimi salad was generously portioned but the slices are rather thick (to be generous) and you don't have a knife, so you end up chewing bites off or stuffing consumption - neither very elegant. Quality of fish was standard - fresh but nothing special. Nice that they're 1 of 2 places in the area actually open for dinner on Sunday (other is a Thai place). And this one is a little more upscale, but has an interesting attraction for families with small kids. It's ok. And fine for a pre show dinner.

I was afraid that everything was going to be extremely heavy, like French cuisine can be with all the cheese and butter. But I ordered the Combo of the Lemon Butter Chicken Ramen and a side of the Miso Teri Bowl (in case the ramen would be too much for me), and I was blown away by both dishes. The Lemon Butter is NOT heavy at all. It felt light and savory, but had a depth of flavor that's hard to identify because this is a dish I have never had anywhere else before. I can see why it's the most popular item on the menu. I took the side of Miso Teri Bowl home for dinner as the ramen was filling enough. There's a hint of wasabi in the dressing they drizzle over the shredded green onions that elevate this dish from other Teriyaki Chicken bowls I've had. Just DELICIOUS. I'd come back to Tonsho just for this rice bowl. My friend got the Dan Dan Ramen which he said blew his mind. He was surprised by the lightness of the broth, which is unlike the Chinese Dan Dan which is usually made of heavy creamy sesame paste. He actually drank most of the broth, and didn't feel like he was cheating on his diet. Additionally, the design of the restaurant, from the layout to the choice of bowls and utensils reminded me of a certain 2-Michelin Star restaurant in Culver City. The service was bar none. The waitress was attentive and thoughtful, even getting us a glass of water after we had been sitting there for another hour after paying our check. We never felt rushed or pushed out. Five stars, period. Coming back for more.

The restaurant isn't crowded on a Thursday evening and I was seated immediately. Original ramen 5/5 has a stronger chicken broth flavor. Lemon butter ramen 4/5 is masked more with the buttery and creamy flavor. So the chicken broth flavor isn't as strong. Miso teri bowl 5/5 has a charcoaled flavor and is favored well by my group. Gyoza 5/5 is okay. You can't go wrong with gyoza. Overall, the ramen this restaurant used is a wheat type, not egg. The ramen noodles have speckles of wheat on them and appear much more clear. My table thought the wheat flavor was too overwhelming while I didn't think so. I definitely like the original ramen more because it has a stronger chicken f

Instead of the traditional nori typically used for handrolls, they served a salted, crispy version. While some diners may enjoy the added texture, it wasn't quite for me. It reminded me of the seasoned seaweed used in Korean kimbap--similar to what I buy at Costco and use at home--which took away from the experience I expect from a classic handroll. The fish itself was fresh and above average, especially considering the lunch special pricing. Overall, it was a solid meal, but if I order this again, I would definitely request traditional nori to better complement the quality of the fish.
