A large party made the indoor atmosphere pretty loud, but after they left it was easy to have audible conversation. Several people came in to pick up to go orders while we were there. Service was really warm, food came out so fast & everything was DELISH: Beef bowl - marbled beef cooked w/onions on rice. So tender & flavorful! I was in the area and stopped by for the open handroll lunch. Service was attentive, and the presentation was impressive from start to finish. One unexpected twist was the seaweed. Instead of the traditional nori typically used for handrolls, they served a salted, crispy version. While some diners may enjoy the added texture, it wasn't quite for me. It reminded me of the seasoned seaweed used in Korean kimbap--similar to what I buy at Costco and use at home--which took away from the experience I expect from a classic handroll. Stopped by before a show at Largo, and there were only four other people dining at the time. Service was friendly. I ordered a diet coke, two orders of the eel sushi (each order comes with only two pieces!). I didn't feel four pieces of eel sushi was good value for $16. The hand rolls were $6 a piece which were smaller than the average hand rolls. The eel had great flavor, but the spicy tuna was off. Oh how I wish I didn't have to walk through the kitchen to get to the restrooms. I didn't enjoy seeing the behind the scenes of it all. And the bathrooms need to be cleaned better, especially around the base of the toilets. They smelled awful. I hate to say this, but I definitely wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. read more

After reading the reviews here I had high expectations...Sadly, I was disappointed to learn that it's another overhyped and overpriced spot just because of the location. It's right across from Nice Guy and the Sofitel. $115 for lunch for 2. I could have and should have gone to Sugarfish and actually enjoyed the meal. Ordered the spicy garlic edamame, cucumbers, crispy rice and (2) sushi lunch special. The cucumbers and edamame were delicious but everything else was underwhelming. The sushi lunch special comes with a salad and miso soup, a Cali roll topped with spicy tuna and 5 pieces of assorted sushi. Since I'm allergic to crab and imitation crab, I requested a substitute for the Cali roll which they obliged but could only substitute it with a cucumber roll. 2 of the pieces of sushi were fishy and the other pieces were tough and dry almost as if we got the trimmings of the fish that were left out. The service was definitely not worth the 18% tip they suggest when checking out. The waitress seemed annoyed we were there. Maybe she was having a bad day or didn't like the fact that we asked for more than one soy sauce dish so we wouldn't have to share. They do not allow you to pour your own soy sauce, nor do they leave the bottle at the table. They also don't give extra ginger if requested. For under $20, it was so filling, the perfect amount of spice, with a nice helping of chewy udon cooked to perfection. I was so obsessed, I went back the same week to try their carbonara udon and was less impressed. While it had the same udon, it was a little too heavy on the cream. Yesterday, I went back and tried the niku udon to try something else and was lowkey disappointed. The soup was really salty so we ended up adding in a whole cup of hot water to make it more edible. Popped into Kochi West Hollywood on a Saturday afternoon while running errands and I'm so glad I did. First off, the playlist alone was a vibe with R&B that immediately set the tone. Major win that they offer the lunch menu even on the weekend. Dope and much appreciated. I ordered the half Spicy Niki Udon along with the tuna, yellowtail, and albacore open hand rolls, and everything was absolutely delicious. Flavorful, fresh, and perfectly portioned. I was honestly tempted to order more, especially more rolls, but I'll save that for my next visit because I will be back. Service was another highlight. My friend and I are here before a show, out of convenience, as it's right next to Largo. It was ok. Not bad, not great. I had the curry udon that was pretty good. The udon was nice and chewy and the curry flavor was decent but it wasn't great. My friend had a beef bowl that was not very good at all. The meat was bland and not very good quality. We also shared a spicy tuna crispy rice and it was only ok. We decided we had to try the "Crystal Ball" dessert. It was...interesting. And apparently we were met eating it correctly and the owner (I think), who was very sweet, came over and showed us what to do. lol. It wasn't very tasty, but the owner made it fun. What a good combo great to try together and I definitely love the creamy sauce of the udon. I ordered Cheese Curry Udon which he said was good as well. A full order is more servings of course than the lunch combination but it's a good way to try 2 different dishes. The place was not that full and there was only 1 server when I went but it was still efficient. There's a few outdoor seats and the place isn't so cramped. They have other Japanese dishes but as someone who frequents Japanese restaurant -I tried the Uni udon as this is not available in the regular spots I go to. Dining here was a pleasant, relaxing, and delicious experience. I arrived with one other person on a cold Friday night, and we were seated immediately. The inside of the restaurant was warm, dimly lit, and quiet with jazzy versions of Christmas songs playing over the speakers at a comfortable volume. I loved the art that wrapped around the walls. The ambiance was as gentle and soothing as the udon :) We started with the Otsumami cucumber and got the niku and uni cream udons (half size). Otsumami cucumber: Flavorful and refreshing cucumber salad. A tad small, but the seasoning was to die for. UNI CREAM UDON: So rich and creamy! This was like a warm hug in a bowl. The chunks of uni melt in your mouth, and the noodles are impossibly long and bouncy. This was my favorite dish that we got. I had tasted uni only one other time before this and I didn't like it. Now I know what actually good uni tastes like! The server described it as a cross between fish and chicken, and that sums it up pretty well. We were debating getting the mentaiko cream udon but ultimately chose uni because of the server's suggestion. He noted that the mentaiko tastes more fishy. We felt that the half size was enough for one (not too hungry) person after an appetizer. Niku udon: Thick noodles in a warm, soothing broth with tender beef and sweet onions. Super easy to slurp and gentle on the palate. I also really enjoyed this udon, but I did like the uni better because it was more rich. We ordered the crystal ball for dessert, which is like the viral "raindrop cake" or mizu shingen mochi. While the crystal alone was relatively tasteless, it became refreshing and subtly sweet when combined with the roasted soybean powder and syrup. The dessert was very delicate and light, but the whipped cream on the side just tasted like coolwhip, which threw me off a bit. Overall, with udon this satisfying and an atmosphere this inviting, I was expecting Kochi to be way more packed on a Friday night. They clearly deserve more hype! I am always on a search for great uni udon as it's one of my favorite dishes. This place has good creamy uni udon but lacking uni pieces. I usually see a piece or two on top but this one didn't have any, only the roe. It was still good and you can taste the uni in the creamy sauce but I wish there was actually uni pieces. We also ordered a chicken katsu bowl and agedashi tofu. Both were also great dishes and katsu bowl was very filling. If you're in the area, definitely give this place a try. The place is small and there wasn't any customers when we arrived at 5pm for dinner time. There is street parking but I know it's difficult to find parking in this area. Came here unknowingly on Veterans Day so it was a busy street. Many other Japanese restaurants had waits but so glad I stumbled across this hole in the wall. Food-wise everything tastes fresh and clean (not too greasy or saucy). Prices were fair and perhaps a lot more economically friendly! Service was amazing! The waitress was kind and (I think the owner)? but older gentleman made sure to check on every table. I've been a huge fan of this restaurant for a very long time. I've been coming here for years as I live nearby and the food really is the best Japanese food in the neighborhood (possibly one of the best on the west side - especially in this price range). Both the atmosphere and cuisine remind me of the authentic Izakaya one finds in Japan itself. That being said, tonight was likely my last night at this restaurant. The older man who is the server now is incredibly rude and unwelcoming. His energy is frenetic. He was both very rude and condescending towards me. It's a shame considering how much I have loved this place over the years, but until customer service improves, I won't be returning. :( read more
