This is my go-to spot before a Largo show. Sushi is fresh and delicious - favs are the yellowtail jalapeño sashimi, salmon nigiri, miso cod and shrimp tempura specialty roll. It's not cheap ($2 for extra ginger?), but you'll leave full. Expect a 45 min+ wait on a show night, though they do keep the tables moving quickly. Kudos to the guy managing the waitlist because he has to deal with some entitled brats - if you want to grab a drink down the street while you wait, keep your eye on your phone because they're not holding your table when the waitlist is 20+ deep. Deducting half a star because they allow non-service dogs inside, which is especially yucky in a sushi bar (but it's still a health code violation even with a closed kitchen). read more

Randomly discovered this spot and went on a Wednesday. The fish is pretty good however I was disappointed in the actual experience. Going out to eat sushi is never cheap. The waitlist is a piece of paper outside and you're basically stuck waiting around on the street or gambling if you should leave. The interior is not welcoming, it's a place where you're not meant to stay long, and it could use a renovation. It was pretty warm on the inside and smelt a bit too fishy for my liking. The fish quality was good. The salmon was absolutely amazing and melts in your mouth. Spicy tuna crispy rice was good, but nothing special. Price point is fair since you get 4 pieces. Yellowtail was good, but again nothing special. The fish was a bit too warm because the AC wasn't really running well. I did feel rushed during dinner service. They open at 12PM then again at 5:30PM, recommend getting there before they open so that you don't have to wait too long. It's walk-in only and since it's a small spot, it fills up very quick! Yes, this place lives up to the hype!! I always see a line for dinner so I decided to stop by for lunch. I showed up about 20 minutes before they opened and I was the first in line, but by the time they opened, at least 20 people were waiting and the restaurant was packed immediately. Service is so great from all the staff and I loved the hospitality from everyone! The sushi is absolutely delicious and isn't drenched in sauce or overdone with nonsense ingredients. Everything is balanced and served just right! I loved all the nigiri but the toro was outstanding and the seared toro was simply mind blowing. The texture was heavenly! I liked that the chef offered to make the sea perch order with both raw and seared since both were on the menu! Sushi Fumi is the best sushi in LA, and I absolutely stand on that. The truffle toro here is hands down the best toro I've ever had--rich, buttery, perfectly balanced, and unforgettable. The truffle scottish salmon sushi is also amazing, and every piece of sashimi is extremely fresh. The rolls are great, and the spicy tuna crispy rice is amazing-- but the real main show is the sashimi and nigiri. The hamachi yellowtail with jalapeño is phenomenal, & same for the albacore crispy onion. try the hamachi yellowtail as a hand roll, it's so good. popcorn shrimp is also so good. Orlando, Tim & Eli are not only incredibly accommodating but are truly amazing to watch. Orlando somehow manages an extremely busy door facilitating tables, taking calls and managing the crowd all while keeping his cool and maintaining a smile. Once you're inside Tim and Eli are everywhere and make sure everyone always has what they need. It was a lovely atmosphere created by them along with a talented wait staff. I had a very upsetting experience at Sushi Fumi. After our meal, the staff screamed at us because we did not leave a 20% tip and told us we were banned and could never come back. The chef also began yelling, acting extremely aggressive, and appeared to try to put his hands on us. We felt threatened and uncomfortable. I recently came here on a date and had a great time. It was really busy. We ended up waiting outside on a Saturday night for at least 30 minutes. Almost left, but we were able to get a table. the ambience is nothing special, its more of a casual eatery. But the star of the show was the food. I ordered the Unagi V Uni, the baked cod, the scallops, the toro tartar, the yellowtail, and the spicy tuna over crispy rice, and the monk fish, liver, ankimo. Every dish was delicious. I put my name down and was seated about 5 minutes later, may be a bit more difficult if you are not a solo diner. The place is very low key and easy going vibes. I ordered the salmon skin salad to start- very simple and tasty salad, a great starter I got a few sushi pieces all priced between $9-20 and a miu roll which was essentially albacore on top of a spicy tuna roll. Small unassuming sushi bar, but it's definitely not a secret, so unless you get there right when they open just expect to wait! We got a drink across the street at the Roger room (cool old school looking bar) to kill time. We put our name in at 7:15, our wait was an hour. Once seated at Sushi Fumi though, the fresh, delicious fish came out steadily until we were full and ready to go. Service was great, sushi chef and wait staff attentive and friendly. It was a little bit loud so we focused on food and got out of there. I was so pleasantly surprised with Sushi Fumi! They don't take reservations so you have to pop in and hope you won't wait too long. This is a great spot to stop in before some laughs. Back to the eats - My friend and I started with some basic salmon and tuna nigiri. Or so we thought. These slices were spectacular, freshness on another levell, perfectly cut and the sushi rice bed was incredibly tasty. We were like what the---lthis is GOOD fish. I haven't had great sushi in so long, I actually did a little happy dance in my chair. We were actually so surprised at how good it was, we looked at the open sushi bar and saw some older Japanese chefs at the helm. Fascinating. In addition to our fresh fishies, we had a Philly and a Dragon Roll. Again, we basic, but man they were both so tasty. Creamy goodness in both of them but elevated. Like, better than usual rolls. Overall, the food at Sushi Fumi in Beverly Grove is 9.5/10. There is a wait to be seated, but it's worth it. Maybe just don't arrive starving like we did! RESERVATIONS: They do not take reservations in advance, we tried calling many times and the phone didn't go through, so if you want to go here for sushi - plan to wait between 30 minutes to an hour. WAITLIST: When you arrive, you sign in with your name, party size, and phone number on a paper sign up sheet out front on a podium. While many people were standing around, you can go sit and wait in your car, as they'll call/text you when your table is ready. Note, you need to have your full party there to be seated, and they are strict on this. For a party of 2 on a Tuesday we had around a ~40 minute wait; we arrived at 7:58pm and were seated at 8:39pm, but at least they do have good heaters out front. Once we were seated, we felt like we recognized half of the restaurant from our time standing outside together. PARKING: There's metered street parking, and make sure to read the signs! DRINKS: For cold sake, they sell bottles in 2 sizes, and as we were looking for something fruity & smooth, we went with the Dasani 45, which is $25 for the smaller bottle (300ML) and that was plenty for 2 people to share. RECOMMENDED ORDER FOR FOODIES: For a starter salad, the Tomato Avocado Salad ($10) is a must-order. We really like the Apple Dressing on it, it's perfectly balanced and very refreshing with perfect avocado and cherry tomatoes, and we enjoyed the fresh micro-greens (even basil?) on top. For a shared vegetable, for $10 you get a large portion of Grilled Eggplant with Sweet Miso in a sweet sauce. For soup, this was my first time trying Miso Soup with Clam ($7/bowl), and I thought they did a great job! The texture of the clams was perfect for the soup, and they were easy to remove from the shells. For regular sushi, my favorite was the absolutely delicious Golden Eye Pink Snapper with Yuzu ($15) from their white board menu. A delicious sushi from Fumi's Special Sushi list was the Toro with thinly sliced mild Jalapeño, topped with a small piece of Cilantro, and Truffle Ponzu Sauce, market price; you can also order this as sashimi if you prefer. For seared sushi, our top favorite was the Seared Toro with Yuzu Sushi ($18) from their white board menu - it looks bumpy and tastes excellent; it was so good that we ordered this twice! The Seared Yellowtail Belly Sushi ($10) was also very delicious and is another must-order; ours came with a small amount of sauce and yuzu pepper, served on the same plate with the snapper. For sashimi, I strongly preferred the very brightly colored King Salmon Sashimi ($18 for 4 pieces) over the regular deep red Blue Fin Tuna Sashimi ($22 for 4 pieces). The Blue Fin Tuna was a little fishier tasting then I was expecting. For hand rolls, I always love a Blue Crab Hand Roll ($10), and for this one I recommend adding a small amount of wasabi for extra flavor, without overpowering the crab. For a hot dish entree, I recommend the Miso Marinated Black Cod ($24); it was a good portion size and was served with shishito peppers and eggplant, and the sauce had a perfectly sweet-savory while the fish was buttery and melted in your mouth. This was my little secret neighborhood restaurant that has gotten (rightfully) too popular with the longest lines. lately the lines go up to 60 people prior to opening but I never waited more than 1-1.5 hrs to be seated. I try to go 30 min before they open to secure a seat or lunch times. I AM obsessed with everything they have but more specifically their truffle seared taro, seared scallops, yuzu halibut, yuzu yellowtail, jalapeno toro, baked cod, eel, etc etc. The service is ALWAYS on point and although they are EXTREME busy every single day and time, the employees always smile and are kind. this is my favorite place in ALL los angeles and the US for sushi (and I have been to michelin star sushi restaurants too.) nothing can beat sushi lin. read more

There's actually no reason for Sushi Fumi to be as good as it is. I mean this honestly. The clientele are loud, noisy, rowdy, and largely there pre-, post-, or mid-drinking. But for some reason, despite the fact that this restaurant could probably get away with skimping on portion sizes or quality, they don't. There's always a long wait, and that's for good reason. I honestly think that I had the best sushi of my life this night: Each dish was mouth-watering, high quality, melt-in-your mouth type of sushi. There's not too much rice, either - they're not trying to fatten you up so that you don't eat too much of their high quality fresh meats. I was honestly astounded not only by the freshness and quality, but for the flavor profile of each of the dishes. You can really taste the truffle oil and hints of jalapeño that come in their special rolls. The only dishes I wasn't particularly impressed by was the salmon teriyaki and the miso eggplant, largely because I found they weren't special at all. What's special are their sashimis and sushi rolls: Don't bother ordering anything else and you'll leave satisfied. More than satisfied! The restaurant is tiny and SO loud that you can hear every single conversation in the room, yet our table was singled out multiple times and told to "quiet down because the chefs could hear us." The chefs are literally at an open sushi bar in the middle of the restaurant... obviously they can hear everyone. It was our friend's birthday, we were sober, simply talking and enjoying dinner like every other table there. Service was terrible from start to finish. Our waitress was dismissive, acted annoyed every time we tried to order, gave zero helpful recommendations besides "everything is good" or "I don't know," and disappeared constantly so we had to keep flagging people down despite spending over $300. What really crossed the line was what happened after. We chose not to leave a tip because the service genuinely did not deserve one, and the waitress chased us down the street to point it out. Then after we got into our car, another staff member came outside and told us to "never come back." I've never had restaurant staff chase me down the street and to my car over a tip in my life. What the heck are they doing in there that's causing herds of people to wait for sushi. The sushi chef behind the bar took our order pretty immediately and from there, it was game on. We ordered a salmon cut roll, spicy yellowtail cut roll, and the special combination plate which included sashimi, carpaccio, spicy tuna crispy rice, miso soup, and salad. All the sushi was really good. It was quality and melt in your mouth fish. The pricing is on the higher end so be prepared for that, perhaps because they are located on La Cienega in Weho? Not sure. The service was fine, quick in and out dining without the frills. Honestly, I thought the food was good but also a bit pricey considering I can find comparable quality elsewhere for lower costs.
