The Pointes have nothing close to authentic Chinese food, so Summer Palace is one of the few places to get any sort of Chinese food at all. Summer Palace has standard American style Chinese food in large portions. The Singapore noodles were good, although I would have liked more egg, spiciness, and meat and seafood (such as shrimp and chicken) in the meal rather than being an add-on option. I prefer the chicken egg foo young dinner, which comes with an egg roll and rice. For an additional $2.50, I chose to have fried rice. There is a large amount of rice and egg foo young topped with gravy. It's decent for American Chinese, filling, and is enough to feed several people. I suppose I took a gamble ordering a Thai dish when this seems like more of a Chinese restaurant, but the Tofu Pad Thai was not great. The tofu was very watery and gross, and the noodles were too spicy. We also tried some chicken dishes which were mediocre. Finally, the egg rolls lacked flavor and did not have the best texture. Perfect little take out only shop - a little door on the Beaconsfield side of a building facing Kercheval. BBQ Pork fried rice had generous amount of red crusted bbq pork bits I enjoy. Crab Rangoon order was good, wrappers were an unusual yellow color that I was not accustomed to, but didn't change the product. They were delicious. One star lost because the egg rolls were not enjoyable. Filling was dense, they were greasy, and had some inside stringiness. I should've ordered the spring rolls. I had high hopes for this little takeout place in Grosse Pointe Park, but my hopes were dashed with this meal. I ordered the Almond Chicken dinner which came with an egg roll and shrimp fried rice ($3 extra for shrimp), and I also ordered egg drop soup to go with my dinner. The soup was ok, the egg roll was decent, the rice was good, but the chicken dish was terrible. I saw that pale-looking gravy and knew this wasn't going to be a good time. The breading was awful, too. Almond boneless chicken isn't a spicy dish, but this was incredibly bland. Service was fine, and there's not much atmosphere because it's just a takeout place. Horrible! I've given this place multiple chances and it is horrible. The egg rolls had some kind of liquid in them that just flowed out and were flavorless. The almond boneless chicken? Deep fryer oil clearly old, instead of the breading being golden brown was zombie white and flavorless, sauce was pretty much corn starch and water no flavor. Steamed dumplings where this weird orange yellow color as opposed to the white I have always seen them. Flavor was just ok. I threw out 1 1/2 egg rolls out of two and 2/3 rds of the boneless chicken. I try to order something different each time I get food from summer palace. About a week ago, I placed an order for the teriyaki udon noodles. It was ready quick. I took it home and opened it to find a sea of sauce! So much sauce that it splashed all over! So much sauce that I was left with a quart of it after I finished the entire entree. After several visits since their renovation, it was time to provide a review here on Yelp. In short, hell yeah. Summer Palace has stepped up their game and deserves a higher score to reflect that. Here's a review of what our house has tried: Japanese Style Fried Rice - the garlic and butter in this dish is no joke; straight up delicious. So much flavor it is our go-to now over Chinese style Japanese Teriyaki Undon - udon noodles with great vegetables and loads of tasty sauce. Probably one of my favorite dishes from here. Singapore Rice Noodles - a thin rice noodle with light chopped vegetables (carrot, green pepper, onion), egg, roast pork and shrimp with a yellow curry sauce. Sauce would be an exaggeration, more like seasoned. Spice temperature would be medium. Overall this is an excellent tasty dish but since my brain wants to like spicy but my mouth says screw you, sadly I probably won't be getting this dish again. General Tso's Chicken - this dish is pretty good but note it hasn't changed. Lightly breaded in a sweet and savory sauce. I think it is great, my partner thinks it's too sweet. Garden Roll - shut up and take my money. I love vegetable rolls but not a fan of the real stuff. For those out there want to participate in the sushi craze but just can't stomach it, this is for you! Most vegetable rolls can have too much of a seaweed taste going on but not you Garden Roll! You have all the fancy presentation and all the flavor. Note, this is not at all spicy. That little chili pic on the menu actually belongs on the Singapore noodle. Tempura Hawaiian Roll - Yum! What a fantastic combination of pineapple, cream cheese, avocado and jalapeño. The outside of the roll is tempura giving it a perfect crunch. Half of the rolls were not at all spicy while the other half had some bite. That is the the risk you take with jalapeños though. Finally! I've found my go to Chinese restaurant on the east side of Detroit. To be honest,I've lived around the corner from this place for a year but due to my work schedule I was never able to eat here. Plus I read and heard so many mix reviews I wasn't in any rush,not to mention when I'd drive past it looked like it wasn't very welcoming. But they closed down and remolded and I had a week off of work with a few extra bucks when they reopened 2 days before I went to work. Nice big CLEAN picture window let's you see clear to the kitchen in the back. Walked in and was greeted respectfully and promptly. Bright lights are a must for me in a restaurant and they have them in spades. Very clean and I could smell nothing but good fresh food being cooked. My first choice was almond chicken. I can't lie,this is the best almond chicken I've ever had. Usually people put the gravy on the chicken which isn't bad,but they put your gravy on the side so that your able to see how FRESH your chicken is fried. I was able to tell it was fresh grease when I opened my container and smelled it. They also have a sushi bar but I must admit the orange chicken was delicious as well. Very tasty. They have sushi now, which they didn't have before. The food were not expensive, and they were very TASTY!! I ordered my rolls there, but you can also place your order by call. I got Grosse Pointer Roll, Dynamite roll, Beacons Field Roll and California Roll. They were crispy and fresh. The tempura shrimp tasted SO GOOD! We really enjoyed the food here. I definitely will come try the Chinese food next time. I was also surprised their environment. The restaurant has nice and decent decoration, it's clean and tidy. You can see how they make the food. The staff there were also very nice and polite. I didn't wait long. They had my food ready quickly, which made me happy and had my food freshly. A nice neighborhood spot, and the recent remodeling has given the space some excellent and needed refreshment, with an emphasis on fresh white tones. This is a very convenient spot for me, as I live nearby, so I recently gave them another try, and found the food to be serviceable although overly sauced and also on the large portion side. I ordered a noodle dish with some chicken added and found very few pieces of meat. I will probably come again once in awhile, primarily because this is likely the only take-out place in the vicinity that stays open past 7pm, but wouldn't rush here. read more

Keeps getting worse. Last night I ordered almond boneless chicken and spring rolls (2 come with the order) for pick up, and was told 25 minutes. Got there 30 minutes later and waited in line for another 10 minutes. When I got my food home, I had 1 egg roll (not 2 spring rolls) and a box of fried chicken and a cup of gelatinous bland brown gravy. The gravy was so thick that it actually resembled jello. No lettuce, no almonds, no flavor of almonds. The chicken was over cooked. The egg roll was soft and there was a pool of grease in the bag...and I wanted spring rolls, so that was doubly disappointing. I have been looking for a good Chinese food place for the 3 years I've lived in the area and tonight the quest reached it's happy ending! Garden Roll - I love sushi but have gotten sick from ordering from new places so this time I decided to play it "safe" and just order one veggie roll, to see what Summer Palace was working with. I tried a piece in the car...then another and then I pulled out the menu to plan my next visit haha. I told my bf regardless of how the food tasted I would be back to try a few more rolls. Szechuan Chicken Combo - SO FULL OF FLAVOR!! I have tried this same dish at a few places around town and have always wished I ordered something else. Not this time. The ingredients tasted so fresh (especially the ginger) and perfectly cooked. Chicken was moist and veggies still had the right amount of "crunch" to them. General Tso's Chicken Combo - I asked my bf to give me a description of his meal for the people of yelp, he smiled with a mouth full of chicken, chewed and swallowed and said "write two thumbs up all in caps, they'll know what that means". So, TWO THUMBS UP!! Egg Roll - Bean sprouts instead of cabbage, just how we like them. Location/Service - I think they have recently remodeled and it looks great! It's clean and bright inside, always a good sign. The 3 individuals that we saw were very polite. First, let me state that the portion of General Tso's Chicken that I received here was simply massive. I had the entrée (just the chicken and some white rice), not the combo (added fried rice and egg roll constitute the combo), and I received enough in the carry-out box to feed two of me. Which means it was a quantity large enough to feed three normal people. Quite a bargain in terms of size. Second, when I started this particular epicurean journey today, I wanted General Tso's Shrimp, not General Tso's Chicken, but this restaurant doesn't offer it. Even though they offer plenty of shrimp dishes. And, I found this perplexing, to say the least. Couldn't you just quick-fry the shrimp you have in the same sauce, and then, voila, you have General Tso's Shrimp? When I made this suggestion to the woman that took my order, she simply replied, very quickly and somewhat tersely, "No, we don't do that". Well, okay, then. Subject closed. Third, whether you order the entrée or the combo, the General Tso's Chicken does not come with broccoli. A little unusual, but hey, I can splash out extra for some broccoli. So, I did. My order came out around $12.60, give or take a few pennies. And what did I get? I got a lot of chicken with several small broccoli florets in a sauce that was merely between OK and good. The chicken-to-broccoli ratio was way off, with the broccoli portion suffering in this instance. I guess they just don't think broccoli should be with General Tso's Chicken, and they were trying to save me from myself. Who knows? The sauce was more sweet than hot, and I like at least an even balance. I've noticed over the years I've been ordering this dish, that in places with a large ethnic Chinese population, i.e., San Francisco, Los Angeles, NYC, Vancouver, Toronto, China (well ,HK and Taiwan) itself, etc., the sauce used in General Tso's is spicy, sometimes devilishly hot, and the dish comes festooned with peppers. This is the way that I was introduced to General Tso's, and this is the way I love General Tso's. As you get into other parts of the U.S. and Canada, the sauce tends to get dumbed down and loses it's punch. It's really dumbed down here. Additionally, my preference is that whatever the General Tso's sauce is poured over, the meat of the dish should be slightly crispy, not a soft, gooey blob. The chicken pieces in this entrée did not have a crisp texture to them. The chicken, however, tasted fresh and seemed pretty high quality. I'd go here again, but I'd order General Tso's with twice as much broccoli, and ask them to make it hot this time. That might be the ticket. read more
