3 frustrating visits and $90 later, my bike is having the same problems (at times worse). To top it all off, I felt that I was not taken seriously because of my gender. As a 30 year old woman, I had to ask my dad to come in with me to finally have someone look at my bike seriously. I hate to say that, but after my 2nd visit, it was very clear that my bike problem was not taken seriously. Details below. VISIT 1: I was having issues with my rear brake. I took it in and they said the rear pad and rotor needed to be replaced. Fine. I left my bike, they ordered the parts, and did the Free Summit Tune Up (because I bought my bike there) VISIT 2: after I picked up my bike, not only was the brake issue still occurring, but it was UNRIDABLE! I brought it in for a simple brake replacement and tune-up, and it was returned with slipping chains, in worse condition than before! When I brought it back just a few days after I picked it up, one of the men fixed the chain issue (without acknowledging that they were the ones that caused the problem in the first place... an apology would have been nice, at least for the inconvenience of having to bring it back) and then briefly looked at the rear brake and told me it's probably just the fact that it is new and needs to be broken in more. He DID NOT even ride the bike to see what type of issue I was experiencing, even though I told him multiple times that something else does not feel right with the brake. I am not super experienced, but I Mountain bike at least twice a week... enough to know when the brake is not working properly. I left feeling like it was me that was doing something wrong with the bike, or that maybe I was just imagining that something was wrong. VISIT 3: A few days later I took the bike out for another ride with my dad, who is a very experienced mountain biker. He listened to my brakes, which were making a really loud squeaking noise and vibrating a lot, and rode my bike to feel for himself. It was pretty clear to him that there was still something very wrong with my brakes, and that it is not just an issue of new pads being worn in. He had never heard anything like it before. Unfortunately, after my last visit, I did not feel like I would be taken seriously if I returned to Summit again on my own, so I asked my dad to come in with me (which is extremely degrading, but it felt like the only way they would believe that I was actually having an issue). The man that helped us this time immediately rode the bike around the block to experience the issue, and he quickly noticed that there was something else wrong. He took the brakes apart in the back and worked on it for a good amount of time. We ended up having to leave it there for a few days, but were assured that they would do everything possible to fix the issue. Overall, they were very helpful and polite this visit. Unfortunately, I think a lot of that was because I brought my dad with me... Even more unfortunately, I picked up my bike yesterday and rode it today, and the brake problem was still exactly the same. While one of the employees was very apologetic and nice when I picked it up (since he knew that this was the 3rd time I had to bring it in) I was assured that everything was in working order. However, as soon as I had it on the trail, the loud noise and vibration was still there, and it felt exactly the same. Needless to say, I will not be returning to Summit Bicycles. They have lost loyal customers in myself and my dad. read more

Summit Los Gatos just did a fantastic repair job on my MTB. I thought it was simple but it turned into something very difficult, too complicated to explain here. Summit spent a lot of time and effort working on it and never gave up. In the end I had the great outcome I had hoped for at the onset. Bought an evil insurgent back in July just got it in January...that was all well and good I knew it would be a wait...what wasn't good was the serious lack of communication from start to finish on lead/ wait times and then finally getting the bike and it arrived without the listed spec, they sent with sunringle düroc sd37 wheels and srx hubs instead of the inine industry enduro s wheels with hydra hubs that it was supposed to come with, zero communication beforehand about the switch zero mention of hey you could maybe wait longer and get the proper spec, still zero answers about covering the difference in the cost from the wheels received to the ones specd. in going through this was mentioned that should give me less than the difference because they discounted the bike 600$ by get this not charging me more after the MSRP increased months later due inflation bought the bike at msrp of 5999, they said that was a discount from the current price wtf mate update they made it right with a refund comparable to the price difference in the wheels happy with this outcome read more

The guy fixed my tires and I even bought some accessories to go along with my bike. The service is very friendly and I just waited about 30 mins. before I got my bike back. Came here immediately after a ride. My rear derailleur was making a weird noise. I was so worried it was going to need a replacement. I walked in and one of the techs threw it up on a stand and diagnosed it in 5 mins. The took the bike with an estimate pick up for the next day. Went to grab a bite and the bike was done in 15 mins! What an amazing experience shopping for our first road bikes and FS bike if not for the crew of Summit LG, specially John and Matt. John helped us get our first road bikes, he was so patient and courteous. We tested 6 bikes, helped us with our clipless shoes and set it up for us. After a week, we were in the hunt for Santa Cruz FS bikes and Matt of Summit LG went above and beyond for locating 2 bikes from other location/warehouse and was able to transfer the FS bikes within the day. He called us in the afternoon as soon as the bikes arrived. We went there and assured us that he will stay after 5pm (their closing time) to make sure we have ample time to test out the bikes. Thank you for the awesome customer experience even if I live a few miles away I will surely come back to Summit LG even if there is a Summit Santa Clara close to my house. I had the most amazing customer service experience today. I'm a middle aged woman, I used to be a fit cyclist, now just looking for a bit of fun, easy exercise, and still the enjoyment that comes from being on a cool bike. It was a casual, comfortable environment. There was no judgement when I stated my budget in what I was looking for, and I left feeling like a kid at Christmas! Summit Bicycles has been around a long time so I was under the impression that they were reliable. I had never used their bike service before so I went through their on-line process of signing up for a delivery time and made extra effort to make sure I wasn't late for my assigned bike delivery time. Once I dropped the bike off for a 1 hour service, I was told that the bike would be ready "today or tomorrow". Two days later, without a phone call or update, I called and asked about the status of the bike. Their reply was, "Well, it looks like your bike is scheduled for completion in two more days. Well, that's a total of 4 days instead of "today or tomorrow". Here we are, 4 days later, and I haven't had a call or email from Summit Bicycles on a 1 hour service that was supposed to be done "today or tomorrow" where I had to reserve a time on their website just to drop it off. read more

Okay, I will start with the pros: Friendly and helpful staff. Now the reason for only one star: Brought my bike in for a tune-up, and decided to by a new computer for my bike. Since they had my bike for a week, I decided to pay extra money so they can install it just out of convenience (it was a wireless). Got a phone call 3 days later telling me the bike is ready. I was pretty excited since they told me it was going to take a week, but they finished it in three days..........they did not tune-up my bike. It took them 3 days to install a wireless computer on my bike. I told them I brought the bike in for a tune-up, they argued with me saying it was not in the invoice. I specifically told the sales person and the mechanic I wanted a tune-up and offered to pay for it in advance when I dropped the bike off. Nope, not in the invoice........ So I called the place on the day they promised the bike would be finished, not done tell tomorrow....argh. Picked the bike up the next day, they threw away the box and the instruction for my computer. So basically I am not sure if I bought a new computer or a old computer for my bike. I wanted to return the computer but I was itching to go riding so bad that I just wanted to leave the place. Went to go riding..... they didn't tightened the rear derailleur bolt for the wire. Wire came loose after 20 min. of riding. Never coming back here. read more

Imagine you're 10 miles into the woods and something terrible goes wrong, in this case I was at the end of segment three on the Demo Flow trail and one of my cleat screws went missing (no one carries extra cleat screws) and so I used my water bottle screw to ghetto rig it. Just went I thought all was lost, these 4 dudes show up and tried to solve my problem. One fellow unscrewed some random shoe screws to try ad solve my problem and the other guys searched their bikes to see if any random screws would fit. Even the nicest of guys would have just said (no sorry, can't help you) but these folks who happened to own and work for Summit Bicycles took about a half hour out of their ride to help me out. Apparently I'm supposed to mention Poncho at this point in the review. The most important thing about a good bike shop service. In the Bay Area where there is an incredibly high bike shop per capita you need to stand out. You can buy the same Trek at a hundred different shops, it's kind of like those folks who said that George Bush was the type of guy they'd want to have a beer with. I want my local bike shop guys to be those beer having types, because anyone can true a wheel or advise you against buying the latest in carbon fiber wheelsets, but doing it with a smile is important. read more

I rented a couple of bikes from Summit last weekend for me and a buddy who were in the area for a wedding. It started out nice... I paid up front and they did us a favor by dropping the bikes off at our hotel the night we arrived so we could get in an early morning ride. They were very nice bikes and well-tuned. The riding in the area was beautiful. While out on the ride, I skidded to avoid an oncoming car on a narrow descent and blew out a tire and scuffed the rim. I brought the bike back and explained what happened. They gave me another wheel to ride on the next day, and said nothing specific about how it would be handled. Well, looking at my credit card statement a week or so later, I found a charge for ~$450 in addition to the rental fee - I called to inquire and was told this was for paint damage to the frame, a wheel they were considering garbage, and a tire. The problem was, we had no written or oral rental agreement about what would happen in the event of damage, and nobody ever discussed what they were planning to charge me for any damage. They just charged me. Beyond that, the general manager accused me of lying about the damage to the frame and trying to cover it up with a Sharpie. It just wasn't from me. I would have happily bought the rim off them and repaired it myself and payed for a new tire... but the way they handled this was just (in my opinion) unprofessional and unethical. read more

If you're a beginner and don't come here wearing bike shorts and a neon top, expect to have a talking-down at Summit Bicycles. The manager offered help when I was looking for a commuter hybrid, but stupidly asked questions like: - "So you like this bike--you mean, do you like it because of the...colorrrr??" - "Do you know how to stop a biiiike?" - "Do you know how to shift geeeears?" No, I don't look like a 3-year-old, unless you're talking about those kids with crazy hormones-in-the-meat-induced growth spurts who are 5'5" with boobs. I understand why the manager asked these questions, since people do buy bikes for the wrong reasons or crash them during a test ride. But really, that condescending talk wasn't cool. read more

All I can say is wow, fantastic shop if you want to start a cycling hobby or fix your current bike. A friend of mine had her bike messed up, thank to a company that assemble Amazon-sold bikes! The front wheel was totally misaligned and my poor friend didn't know what is going on, other than being annoyed by riding the bike, she was about to hate cycling all together. I promised to help her fix the issue, I went to the shop, met Nik and he instantly identified the issue and told me he needs to order some parts and he will contact me. A few days passed by and no news, so I called and asked about the status of the fix, the shop informed me that the parts are still on the way. After two weeks the parts arrived and the shop text me as promised. I already sent the front wheel only, so I took the rest of the bike with me and met Nik and when he put it in, he realized other issues. I was almost certain I will pay more fixing the bike than the original price, I asked Nik if this is the case, he assured me it is not. He actually made a new working order, seems it was more than just the front wheel, and the next day the bike was ready. I will not tell you the price, but it was super inexpensive, here is what went into fixing that wheel. First, all the larts ordered by eBay, which we know is pain to deal with, they ordered axils, new brake pads, new ring for the break, new wire brake (the original Amazon-certified guy was totally idiot putting the bike together) and finally the stainless steel balls inside the front wheel. Let me tell you this, had I bought all this stuff myself I would have paid more than the total payment I did for the shop. Hats off to Nik and the team, I love the shop and I love the repair center. read more

First the pros. The staff and the owner seemed knowledgeable and friendly. Now for not so nice. I had purchased my daughter's bike here in the past. And, because my colleague raved about the place, I decided to pay a visit again. Even though I could have ordered CoPilot Limo bike seat from either Amazon or Performance at a much cheaper price, I decided to pay $135 + tax anyways. I was in search of local bike shop ever since Pacific Bicycle closed its store in Blossom Hill Ave. I don't mind paying a little more for the convenience of having a local bike shop near my house. Initially, when I purchased the bike seat for my baby, the owner offered to install it on the bike for me. That usually means free. Since I was paying at least $30 more, I thought that it was a reasonable deal. Few days later, I brought my hybrid bike, which I had purchased from Pacific Bicycle, the shop charged me $10 for labor. The price of the labor is okay, but I felt that the owner went back on his word. According to the employee taking care of me claimed that owner's reason was that I didn't buy the bike there. Uggg, you knew that already when you first offered to install it for me. Besides, when I mentioned it to the possible $10 charge as I was leaving, he said that he would "take care of it when I pick it up." To make things worse, when I asked for the original box, no one knew where it was. (I'd like to have it when I sell it in two years) One of the employee said I should look for it their dumpster! He must have realized that it was a dopey comment. He went back and found it for me while I was waiting by the cash register. Anyways, he did fix my wobbly adjustable stem for me though. By the way, at the time of the purchase, Amazon had it for $99 (no shipping & no tax). Performance had it for $119 (with 20% coupon and additional 10% for Team, after tax and shipping I was looking at $105). Overall, this is probably a good bicycle shop for many people as evidenced by the heavy crowd today. But, for me, I've experienced better... much better. Considering that I was willing to pay extra, I don't think I was treated as well as I should have been. So far, I've spent thousands (as most cyclists do) and will spend thousands more. My next bike purchase will be a significant upgrade from my 2005 Giant TCR C3, which I purchased from Pacific Bicycle. I'm a very loyal customer, but Summit won't have my business. I guess I'll be frequenting Performance Bicycle in Campbell until I find something a little closer to my house. I will be trying out Trail Head Cyclery and Willow Glen Bicycles next. read more

I have been using Summit for over 10 years. They have always performed extraordinarily well. Recently, I dropped in to have a rubbing chain issue fixed. When you buy your bike at Summit, tune ups are free to you as long as you own the bike. Daniel Ristow has worked on my bike in the past. He is very knowledgeable, fast and goes the extra step of showing me the cause of the problem. That helps me prevent future problems. I rate Daniel a 10 (or, 5 stars) as well as Summit. You can't find a much better bike shop anywhere with a better group of employees. read more

I started at their Curtner Trek store, as a newbie, considering a hybrid or mtn bike. That store was very good, but came over to see the LG inventory of unisex and men's bikes because I'm tall. The guy who helped me (blanking...will add his name) was the boss I think. Super nice and helpful. Not pushy. Let me take a bike on a ride. He sat with me online to find the right bike. And the moment that won me, after I came back from my ride and a cocky Google employee tried to cut in because of his all-important-I'm-the-man-looking-for-my-Google discount. The awesome Summit guy excused himself promptly and came back to help me. It was good to see they don't bend over for the LG snobs. Well done and awesome. He found the bike I wanted at the Burlingame store and had it transferred. I came in to get it today and another guy was also helpful as I made sure it was the right one and got critical on him. He got me set up with my accessories and I was on my way. I feel like they'll take care of me through the life of my bike (lifetime tune-ups...yeah!) and I can bring it in anytime. I dig that. I purchased a Santa Cruz 5010 a couple of years ago. It was a significant investment and upgrade, and I love this bike! But two weeks into riding, it developed annoying squeaking noises. Locating where the sound was originating from can be extremely difficult. The techs at the other stores tried all sorts of things to silence it, but to no avail. They made adjustments, lubrication and replacing parts, resulting in a bit of money out of pocket for me. After many return trips to the store, I eventually gave up. Today, I visited a different store location: the Los Gatos Summit shop. The store manager Colin, very professional, greeted me. He introduced me to Daniel the technician. He listened to my complaints and test rode my bike. After a quick process of elimination, he suspected it might be my pedals...and it was! Sure it might seem simple in hindsight, but 5 other techs had worked on it without finding it. Thank you, Daniel! I'm happy to have made my purchase at Summit Bicycles because of their competitive pricing. But friendly, superior customer service is what will bring me back. I tried many bike shops before SB, and so far these guys are the very best in the South Bay. Let me be clear: if you enjoy riding a bike and are new in town, find the right bike shop is as important as your wife finding the right hair salon, seriously! I go to SB mainly for the service and I'm very satisfied. The price is fair and the quality is unbeatable. These guys know what they're doing and they don't push you to get rid of your not-so-old alloy bike to get a new carbon frame. They even advised me to buy a front derailleur on-line (cheaper) and they will install it for practically nothing. Other than the service, I've only bought small parts and things like spare tubes, patch kits, etc., but the prices were OK. They also have a wide range of bikes, so it is really hard to say if the place is pricey or not, I just can tell that you could easily find a bike here no matter your budget. The staff is friendly and say all the right things but the actions are lacking. Called about 10 shops to see if they can repair my type of Easton wheel with not much luck. Most places I called were unsure about working on this type of Easton wheel. Then, called Summit to see if they were able to repair and true my Easton wheel.The guy on the phone said they were an Easton authorized dealer and they work on my type of wheel all the time. He seem very confident that getting it fixed would be no problem unlike 10 other shops I called. So, I went in and the confidence to repair the wheel was met with doubt and uncertainty that they be able to order the parts and repair the wheel. I told him the guy on the phone said it wouldn't be a problem and that he said you are an authorized Easton dealer and repair this wheel all the time. He reluctantly said "ok" and wrote me a ticket for the repair. It took them 3 weeks to look at it and when they did, they said they could repair it because something was broke with it. I said ok and picked up my wheel and brought it home. Then after, I realized they didn't give me all the parts that were on my wheel. So, I had to go back to pick up the parts. The whole process took almost a month and still nothing is fixed. read more

Last week, my mom, younger sister, and I were just out walking by to enjoy a nice Sunday afternoon when we stopped to admire the row of bikes parked outside the store. My sister and I had earlier expressed our interest in investing in our own bikes, since commuting any other way had become too expensive and inconvenient. Ken came out to greet us, and soon we found ourselves testing out bikes! Ken was fantastic, focusing on what our needs were for picking out the right bikes for us. He was also very knowledgeable about every equipment and product on bikes you ever needed to know. Being pretty much a newbie when it comes to bike's gidgets and gadgets, the crash course on Bicycles 101 was much appreciated. Justin, our cashier, is a very cool guy. Getting our order all sorted out. He knows his stuff, too, knowing about what products are suited for the customers' needs. He helped us pick out some sweet gear to pimp up our bikes. Now, I'm zipping all over town with my new snazzy orange bike, to places I couldn't even dream of getting to just by on foot or bus, or carpool for that matter. I bought a demo bike at Los Gatos Summit about 2 years ago with a "Lifetime Maintenance" agreement. IMHO--this Maintenance agreement is a scam. Every time I go in for something simple like brake pads, their mechanics are trying to upsell me on some other service. No surprise that they are trying to sell me on maintenance that is not covered by this so-called Maintenance Agreement. I'm not expecting wear and tear items like brakes to be covered by this agreement. But its clear they are trying to push non-covered services. When I questioned them about it, they explained the Maintenance Agreement only covers minor adjustments. So in reality, its not worth very much. And Summit gets an opportunity to upsell me on all these other services as a result of this useless Maintenance thing. At this point, I'm going to Mike's Bike since there is no value in going to Summit. Buyer beware of this lifetime Maintenance Agreement at Summit. Ask questions about what it really covers--and doesn't cover. read more

I've been looking to get a new bike so I stopped it today. I was greeted promptly and had my questions answered in a polite and professional manner. One thing I have noticed is that they do seem to cater to the higher end consumer, ie: the person with more money. Given the area, that's understandable, but it would be nice for them to have more moderately priced offerings, at least with respect to road bikes. We went to this bike shop today because my husband want to look at purchasing a new bike. Clearly, there were people inside, but the door was closed. ( automatic door). I understand that they're probably limiting the number of people they allow inside, but there are no signs outside or any staff that came out to inform us of their "protocol". Before you shop for a bike, you shop for a bike shop. Why? Bike shops are notorious for being audience-segmented: some cater to everyone, some cater to hardcore cyclists (racing types) who spend a small salary on equipment. High-end bike shops have the reputation of being snootsville to ordinary folks like you and me, who need only basic gear and repairs. Summit Bicycles is pretty much a kind of shop where you'd spend a lot of money. However, the times I've been to buy a kid bike, training wheels, safety gear and lights, I was always treated nicely and not at the low end of someone's high nose. I go here to pick up new nighttime lights and safety gear like flags every few months, and there's never been a problem with the staff. Of course there are teenage employees who are less experienced with customer small talk, but no one there has been unprofessional toward me. Summit did a great job fitting training wheels on a kid bike for me, and I would not hesitate to return to purchase from it for our family's biking needs. When I first bought a bike I was kind of overwhelmed by how much attention to detail the staff was giving me. No one had ever gone over my fit and use of a bike or explained everything so extensively. But once I was on the bike, I felt the difference immediately and oh boy did I appreciate it. Now I'm a firm believer and more than that, I know I can trust the folks at Summit to work with me whenever I need anything. Furthermore, everything that Summit has sold me has been high quality and they stand by it. Unlike other local stores, they don't stock cheap garbage that fails the moment you take it out on the road. I drive over the hill from Santa Cruz for the competent service and the quality products. This is one small, local chain that you can trust. And if you've ever experienced a mechanical failure or pain from a bad fit when you're 50 miles into a ride and in the middle of nowhere, you know how very critically important that is. read more

I discovered Summit while doing some research online as my stadby bike shop in Los Altos recently closed. I had to replace a 3 month old Trek SLR7 due to theft ( i will find you!) and Colin helped me with a Trek SLR8 purchase. The new bike had Dura Ace cable shift and Colin accomodated the swap to DI2 without any hesitation. I needed the bike asap and he had the swap done within 24hrs of my paying for the bike. I've owned and rode several high end road bike in my life, the same model "built" at different shops can vary greatly depending on the care and quality of the work of who actually puts the bike together.
