The front office misled me into believing they were in-network with my insurance when they are not and I did not find that out until AFTER my appointment. I did not realize they would not tell me that upfront because the otherdental offices I contacted were very clear about not being in-network. The appointment itself felt rushed and sales-driven. They took an extensive number of X-rays...I would estimate at least 15, more than I've ever had done at any dentist...so I can only imagine what that will end up costing me. The receptionist and hygienist were pleasant but the doctor probably spent about 30 seconds examining my teeth/x-rays. He said I need a night guard and 4 fillings without actually explaining any of it, or which teeth he was talking about. He mumbled when he spoke and he spent more time pushing me to schedule a "free consultation" with his orthodontist buddy next door for braces/Invisalign than discussing my treatment plan. I never asked about orthodontics and have no interest in that. Overall, I feel frustrated and misled about the insurance issue and unclear about whether I actually need detnal work or if the doctor is simply trying to make more $ off of me. Taking extra money from people who need help. I was so disappointed. They quoted him 2500 for ONE TOOTH . And said he would pay between 800-900 dollar out of pocket WITH INSURANCE . We called another place and it was about 500 with insurance and ended up paying 100 dollars out of pocket. Once they realized he wasn't paying that , they called back and said oh we waved a CT scan for you so you'll pay 400-500 hundred out of pocket instead. Stay clear out of these people's way. DO NOT COME TO THIS DENTIST. About 10 or 11 years ago I had an accident that resulted in me chipping one of my front teeth. When I moved to Oakland, I needed to have it repaired and found Dr. Ghassemi's office near my house. Let me preface this by saying that I'm 34 years old and have never had a cavity or needed any sort of dental work. The only issue I've ever had with my teeth is this one chipped front tooth. Previous dentists rebuilt the tooth and I never had any problems with it. Until I came here. Dr. Ghassemi filed down my tooth and had a crown made for me. After a couple of months, the crown started to turn gray. When I went back for a checkup, Dr. Ghassemi noticed that the crown was turning gray. He kept saying that my tooth, not the crown, was gray and said that I wasn't brushing enough near the gum line...basically inferring that the gray crown was somehow my fault. (this is something common at this practice: the way that the people that work here talk to you is extremely condescending) When the hygienist removed my first crown, I looked at my teeth in the mirror and my filed-down tooth underneath the crown was perfectly white. The crown turned gray, not my tooth. He made me come back to repeat the entire procedure and had a new crown made. This was about a year ago, and now the second crown has ALSO TURNED GRAY. It's so gray now that I'm embarrassed to smile big. I get asked about it in public. I notice it in every picture taken of me. It looks absolutely awful. I have never had issues with my teeth and used to love my smile until I came to this dentist. So what am I supposed I do now? I most definitely do not ever want Dr. Ghassemi to touch my mouth again. Now I'm going to have to pay another dentist AGAIN to fix the poor quality crown that Dr. Ghassemi put in my mouth. I specifically scheduled a routine dental cleaning because Summit Dental had a ton of available appointments, only to have a sheet slipped into my paperwork at checkin requiring me to consent to an x-ray examination. Having just received one at another dentist office 8 months prior I didn't want to submit to another and explained, only to be told by the staff that the dentist "prefers all new patients receive x-rays to look for any potential dental problems". This felt disingenuous and unnecessary for routine cleaning, and it's obvious they're only interested in charging an extra fee for the x-rays. Total scam. This review isn't for the service or treatment received but for the billing department. About a year or so of coming to this dental office, I got a call from one of their staff member saying that I missed a payment because my insurance didn't cover an "extra" cleaning that I received and that was also recommended. I was just puzzled as I am sure that I did not receive more than 2 cleanings that year that was covered by my insurance. In addition, my dentist never recommended any extra cleaning for me. I was always told that my teeth were super clean and that I have good oral hygiene. Aside from this, before receiving any service you have to pay before being seen. Upon telling the staff member this, she was super persistent about how I got an additional cleaning that wasn't covered by my insurance and that she doesn't know what the dentist recommends me because she isn't in the office. After this incident, I stopped going here. Since then they have been calling and emailing me nonstop about making an appointment for a cleaning. I am not coming back to this dishonest place. The doctor is friendly, nice, and professional in his demeanor. But their business practices are shady. Twice I have had them recommend a procedure as "necessary", only to have other doctors (oral surgeons with far more experience and credentials) over-rule Summit's plan. My last visit - I went in to have them look at a chipped tooth. They informed me *after* I met with the doctor that they just changed policies and were no longer in-network for my insurance. This should been told to me when I made the appointment, or before the visit. They offered to let me pay cash on the spot for the visit at a reduced self-pay rate (much reduced from what they would bill insurance for), which they estimated would be less than my out-of-network copay if they filed an insurance claim. So, I did. 2 months later? I get a bill from my insurance for out-of-network service, from the Dentist who took my money AND still billed insurance. Worse? They billed the insurance TWICE (same visit, same diagnostic claim). So, now I'm fighting it out with insurance. Other reviews I had seen online reflect some suspicious of shady business practices, and my personal experience agrees. read more

I really appreciate how well they take care of me at Summit Dental. They call me to schedule my cleanings. The front staff is very nice and friendly and so are the Technicians. I have had a wisdom tooth taken out which they put me under for and that was amazing. Didn't feel a thing. Now Dr. Ghassemi gave me my first crown and the process fast and easy and efficient. I really appreciate how quickly they get me in and out of there every time. I also appreciate how he communicates thru the procedure and does what he can to make it as comfortable as possible for me. First time I went to see Dr. Ghassemi, he told me I needed a crown because my fillings were cracked with signs of decay. The fillings were no more than 5 years old so I was surprised. He tried to get me scheduled for this procedure right then and there. I got a second opinion and the other dentist said it was not decay, it was coffee staining. He said the filling cracks were likely surface level and we can monitor to see if they get worse. When I went back to Dr. Ghassemi he again was pushing me to get the crowns, citing decay around the cracks. When I asked if these could be coffee stains rather than decay, he then said the fillings could last another 5-7 years. Then WHY are you pushing me for a crown when my fillings will be fine for 5-7 years AT LEAST? Totally unethical bully. Dishonest and aggressive scare tactics. read more

I had never had a cavity in my life, until I went to Dr. Ghassemi and all of a sudden I had a ton. $1500+ with my insurance. A ton of fillings. I had two cavities filled and had planned on going back for more - until the reps starting getting really pushy about scheduling my next visits. Like 2-3 phone calls a week. The cavities I had gotten were super rough in texture - but since I hadn't had cavities before, I thought this was normal for fillings. Hence, I decided it wasn't a good fit and did not go back. Fast forward to close to two years later, and I saw a great new dentist in the city. Turns out I don't have any cavities. I got checked twice just to be sure. My new dentist used an FDA approved computer program to also scan for cavities between all of my teeth. Nothing. He also let me know what a poor job Dr. Ghassemi did on the fillings. He showed me photos of how rough and deep the fillings were - when it was likely I didn't need them. Noted that it was clear they were very rushed. Needless to say, I'm horribly disappointed to have learned all of this and I can't recommend Dr. Ghassemi. read more

Would give a 0 star if I could. TLDR; unprofessional and condescending doctor, and unhelpful staff. STAY AWAY. Just moved here from NY and was a first time patient with Dr. Babak Ghassemi. When I was checking in, I asked the front desk about the privacy notice form where it contained language regarding releasing my personal information for marketing purposes. I asked her about it and she made a face and gave me a answer that didn't answer my question. (first flag) I go in there for a pre-check up with a hygienist. And she tells me I have to do an X-ray. I refused since I just wanted to get some cleaning done and have gotten x-ray before from my ENT doc in NY before. She calls Dr. Ghassemi in. He pokes around my mouth and says he needs to do an x-ray. At this point, my gum is bleeding from his pokes. (Second flag) He tries to lecture me about the important of x-ray when my teeth are perfectly fine and I do not have any problems. I was ok with an x-ray at this point because it was taking too much of my time trying to talk to him. But the way he talked to me totally turned me off. Very condescending and doesn't let you talk and talks over you. It's also worth mentioning that he asked me what major I was and lectured me about professionalism. I'm 29 years old; served in the military and have a full-time job. That should give you an idea of how rude and unprofessional this doctor is. At a certain point, he says why don't you just go fly to NY and get cleaning done there and fly back? That was the last straw. Will not be coming back. I went here because I had some crappy dental insurance, and this was one of the only places I could find. The office was crowded with some pretty scary looking people. (then again, this is downtown Oakland--what should I expect?) I am very dental-phobic, and when I found out I needed not one but two cavities, it was not pretty. The kind doctor (a young man, can't remember his name) prescribed me Valium--thank God! But I'm not sure if he didn't explain the directions, or give me the proper dose, or what, but I was definitely not calm during the procedure. Truthfully, I had a mild panic attack in that chair. My dentist of 30 years, Dr. Gabor, retired. I already had a couple of bad experiences with the person who bought Dr. Gabor's practice (mostly billing issues) so I knew I needed to find a new dentist. I have excellent dental insurance, but the new staff didn't seem to know how to bill insurance. After I fractured one of my molars, I decided to try Dr. Ghassemi based on his education and reviews. Although he has a very busy practice, I felt that he spend an adequate amount of time with me. He is very professional, courteous and gracious. He took his time working on my broken tooth and is highly skilled in administering injectable anesthetics without causing pain -- I barely felt the needle. He was aware of my body language and inquired when he thought I might be in pain while he was drilling my old tooth. Even thought I was booked at the end of the day, after the regular appointment hours, Dr. Ghassemi waited for the dental assistant to complete her work on my temporary crown so that he could check in with me. We had a nice introductory conversation before I left -- and it was after 7pm !! Dr. Ghassemi's front office staff are EXCELLENT!! The seemed genuinely concerned and booked an appointment for me within two hours of my first call. I mentioned to the staff that I left my prior dentist because of suspicious billing practices and (perhaps as a result?) Dr. Ghassemi's office manager stayed after hours(!) to talk to me about their billing practices and make great arrangements for my upcoming visits. Dr. Ghassemi's back office staff are equally great. I wish I remembered the name of the dental assistant who prepared my temporary crown. She was patient, gentle and took her time to make certain I had an excellent temporary. I felt well cared for and the temporary worked well. When I returned a few weeks later for my permanent crown, I experienced the same great service from the minute I walked through the door to the time I left. Dr. Ghassemi was willing to see me late in the day so I didn't have to miss work. While this is not a small practice -- I can't replace my retired solo dentist who remembered the names of people's children and pets! -- I'm very happy with Dr. Ghassemi and his staff. I had the same experience. These folks are ALL about the money. The first thing they do every time I come in is get the money upfront (even though I have insurance). Then they xray me repeatedly (to determine which dozen cavities they're going to try to convince me to replace with $1000-a-piece crowns, to see if the crown fits my mouth, to see just how much radioactivity my body can stand). Then they call EVERY GODDAMN WEEK to bug me about coming in for more of those $1000 crowns! read more

I needed a crown and they made it right in the office - so no going home with a temporary and coming back to have the crown put on. All the same day. The staff is always so nice and pleasant. The office is not nearby my home - the drive is about 40 each way but it is worth it for the great (as great as going to the dentist can be) experience there. I was his patient for about 2 years. I lived 35 miles away but liked his service, so I stayed with him as long as I could. He was thorough, honest and accommodating. He properly treated me, provided me with options and did his best to keep me current with my treatment so that I could get the highest coverage from my dental plan. His staff was always on point, very courteous and highly professional. I wish I could afford to drive that far to see him more, but alas, I cannot and must find a local dentist now, but since I never testified about the high quality of service he delivers, I thought that I should, especially since some are giving him poor or mediocre reviews. I know as a former educator that my best students often did not create online reviews; instead, they tended to be created by my worst students who sought to cause me harm. I am trying to pay it forward here by thanking Dr. Ghassemi for the wonderful treatment I received from him when I had chronic conditions that he was able to heal. The minute you walk in, expect to throw down some money. My last dentist was on the Peninsula, and they only did what was needed, but I was immediately told I had to pay for X-rays if i wanted a basic cleaning. They tried to charge for other unnecessary services, as their business moto seems to be all about nickel and dimming and having you pay for one service and then tell you that you have no choice but to pay for other services, but no refunds for what you already paid if you want to decline! Oh, and for some reason the prices are double for the same services as elsewhere. Arrived half an hour before my appointment, finally seated an hour after my scheduled time.
