Me and my wife had dinner at this restaurant not really having extremely high expectations. There is no place that has the best sushi than Boston, San Fran. or Seattle. The restaurant is nested in what looked like an office building so we almost missed it. There is no outdoor seating per say. The interior decor is comfy and may be a little dark but let that not mislead you in thinking they are trying to hide anything in the food. We first ordered the seaweed salad which didn't seem worth the $4.50. A small mound in a very large plate, with nothing outstanding to write about. The second appetizer was the avocado salad that was almost double the price, actually was very presentable and unique. It had copped tuna/salmon with tobiko, sliced cucumbers, and slightly sweet mayo layed next to slices of avocado. I honestly thought they would have avocado inside the salad. To be able to judge the quality of sushi, we typically order the sashimi dinner. This had 16 pieces and was $20. The presentation again was incredible and had a nice touch of a flower made of salmon (sake) in a mini steamer. We also ordered a super rainbow roll for $13 and godzilla roll for $12. Again the presentation was incredible and very creative. They both had panko flakes with spicy tuna or salmon. The godzilla was topped with eel while the rainbow roll was topped with 5 different types of fish. I know for some people, the quantity is not as large and a bit on the pricey side but the quality and presentation far exceeds expectation. The fish had great color, was very fresh and had no fishy taste. They may just as well have a pond in back with live fish. That night we had Chef Danny and Chef Ekger(?) create our lovely dishes. Came here on a Monday night; we were planning on just going to get ice cream at magic house, but thought to fill up on sushi. We came in and it seemed pretty quiet, we ordered two rolls, Salmon Katsu and a hot specialty roll -- it took 35 minutes from when we ordered to when we got our food. I was really shocked it was taking so long since it was just two rolls and virtually no one was there. At the 30 mark, I went to the counter to ask for it to-go instead, and no one helped me for 5 minutes. Went to an event at the Prime Osborn with a good friend. A good friend who I also go for sushi with on a regular basis. When I found this place on the app, I was excited to try it. Like Lindsay L., this is a place I have driven by several times, but considering I do not live in Riverside, I had no real reason to ever drive that far for sushi. I ordered my standard spicy tuna with avocado and I tried something new (to me): the Manhattan roll. We split the calamari special (tempura fried) as an appetizer. The spice on the tuna was just right. The rolls were rolled nice and tight which made them very easy to pick up with chopsticks. The waitstaff was pleasant & timely; they never let our drinks empty without checking on us. When I first entered, the hanging dividers threw me a little, but once I was sitting, I appreciated the privacy they did provide. Sumo Sushi is one of my new favorite places in Jacksonville. I cannot wait to take my husband back to try it. While I do not see myself venturing over to Sumo for dinner very often, I will definitely keep it in mind when we're on that side of town. read more

So my girlfriend and me had to spend Valentine's Day in Jacksonville, and there was no question about it, we had to do sushi Sushi in Pensacola means going to Ichiban for us, so I had to find a place that sounded almost as good. I looked on Yelp, I read reviews, and there I was. It was packed, so we got a spot on the waiting list. The waiting list was very unofficial it seemed, because a few other people got seated before the couple that was behind us in line, but natural selection lead us to get seated promptly. However, I think I saw a total of five employees there in front of house, which was just not enough for that night: two sushi chefs, one bus boy, and two kind of servers. After a while, we got our oddly flavored sweet tea. It might have just been the Jacksonville water that we were not used to. We ordered the Fried Calamari and a couple of bowls of Miso Soup first. When we got the calamari, we initially thought that it was crazily overpriced, because of the scant quantity on the plate, but then we started eating it, and it was honestly some of the best calamari I have ever eaten. The soup was soup. Nothing special. For our main course, we ordered three rolls of sushi: the Park Roll, the Double Crunchy Spicy Roll, and the Black Dragon Roll. The Double Crunchy Spicy Roll was a 6.5/10; it was like a crab cake sushi roll with a crunchy element inside. So good. The Park Roll was an 8/10; tempura inside of a roll that itself was fried tempura style. It was the best piece of fried sushi I have ever had. The Black Dragon Roll was a solid 10/10. It was the best roll I've ever had, and I will head back to Jacksonville as soon as I can for another one. Dessert was a fried piece of cheesecake. The cheesecake was tempura fried, but inside the cheesecake was almost completely frozen solid. I don't wanna talk about it. We tried Sumo on a quiet Tuesday night and I've got to say, it was a great experience. They've done a nice job with the decor and made excellent use of those hanging bamboo mats to kind of separate the restaurant into intimate little sections. They also chose to block the windows with bamboo walls, which works. Stepping into Sumo is like stepping into somewhere else. The food, by the way, is also awesome. Highlights for me were the Sweet Potato Roll [no joke, its incredible] and the Kamikaze Roll. Both were fresh and delicious. On top of the taste, the presentation was unbelievable. I mean really, I don't think I've ever seen such artistically presented sushi, certainly not in anywhere with such reasonable prices. As a side note, they have a full menu of hibachi, teriyaki, katsu, etc for those that don't like sushi. And actually Sumo would be perfect for someone who's afraid to try sushi as they have a lot of rolls with cooked fish in them as well. After Koja at The Landing closed, we were distraught until we discovered this Riverside gem. It isn't part of the latest round of Park & King cool/hip/now development and is instead a place that feels better established if not downright homey; it has since become our go to. While we have had service suffer a little as our wait times increased when the restaurant was full and I have waited what I felt was unacceptably long for our check in only a couple extreme instances, I was able to resolve those waits by simply approaching the take-out register myself. The sushi chefs definitely know what they're doing and practice their art with care and precision. The quality of the sushi itself is very good and the pricing makes for an affordable night out. I recently moved to Jacksonville and I was pleasantly surprised with this small restaurant in my new neighborhood. We were seated immediately and a small basket of fresh edamame was delivered to our table while we looked over the menu. We selected a few rolls and appetizers to try a variety of options. The dumplings and edamame were delicious and pleasantly savory. The tempura chicken appetizer was somewhat greasy, but had good flavor. We tried the following rolls: Alaska Rainbow Spicy Tuna Honey Fuji Mountain The spicy tuna was very good but nothing extraordinary. The rainbow, Alaska and Fuji Mountain rolls were also very good rolls and are worth coming back for. The only roll I was unimpressed with was the Honey roll. The roll itself had quality ingredients but was too sweet for my tastes. The service was very speedy and our server checked in with us frequently. When our meal was over we were brought a pair of chopsticks because we purchased more than $50 worth of food. This place is worth a second visit and I look forward to trying some new items next time I visit! read more

I've dined here a few times with my ex-boyfriend who lived in Jacksonville and I have only good to say about this establishment. The sushi is very fresh and tasty and the service is also quite good. In fact, the sushi chef recognized us on our second visit from when we'd had lunch here a couple weeks before and sent over a free nigiri to try. He, and the rest of the staff, seemed truly happy we'd picked their restaurant for dinner. The sushi is in the same price range as a lot of other Jax places, which is to say not too expensive but not really cheap either. For fresh, quality, sushi, you get what you pay for, and that's just how it rolls. The quality I feel is higher overall than nearby Sake House. Sumo is a fairly new establishment and seems sincere in trying to offer the best experience possible to their customers. The Lobster Roll, Summer Roll (no relation really to Viet summer rolls), and the lunch specials are all stellar dishes here: any fresh sushi that is not very dressed-up and allows the flavor of the fish to come through is also a good bet due to the emphasis here on fresh fish. The tuna and yellowtail rolls I had were some of the best I've had in quite some time. read more

First off, I love the atmosphere. The waiters and waitresses are amazing. Even when I brought in my picky 3 year old nephew, they were super sweet to him. I only ever go for sushi, but I have yet to be disappointed. The less than 4 dollar sweet potato roll is the best in Jacksonville. Plus, you can tell the sushi chef is very proud of his art work. We walked in at 3 because the Italian place was closed. The first impression were not great but that changed as we meet our waitress and looked at the menu. Music was an oriental hip hop. Strange at first but it worked. Sushi and sashimi was very nice and the presentation was good. I would rather have edible or at least real adornments to my plate. I can't believe i haven't written a review for this place yet, considering I've eaten here more times than I can count. I'm totally slacking. Located on Park Street in Riverside, it's a convenient stop for a bite to eat while I'm out and about grazing through the awesome antique stores in the area. The Scene: It's cozy, yet not cramped, so that wherever you're sitting you have a pretty good view of the sushi bar and you can observe the chef working his ninja skills. Me? If I tried to be a sushi chef, I'd have no fingers because yes...I'm that clumsy. So I've always carried a profound respect for their craft and the artistry involved. Looking around, my first impression was that the setting was soft and intimate, thus a pretty good choice for a date night, or if you're in the mafia...a "sit-down." The Grinds: OK, so I'm allergic to seafood (YES, i'm from Hawaii and allergic to seafood...what a waste, huh? Lol), so obviously my sushi choices are limited when I dine at these establishments. For those of you who are lucky enough to indulge in such...I recommend you step away from the norm and check out the Red Menu. If it's not on the table, ask for it. What lies inside is a vast, innovative array of sushi variety that I've yet to see anywhere else. This tells me they know their stuff, and aren't scared to step beyond the "Dragon Roll" hype. Since I can't have seafood, I go for the Sweet Potato Roll, which never fails to provide that perfect soft to crunchy consistency that I look for. What I love is that they'll substitute chicken in the Shrimp Tempura Roll for me without batting an eye, and with flawless execution at that. I can eat these everyday, especially coated in the scrumptious shrimp sauce. The Service: You'd think I'd know her name by now, considering I come here for lunch around the same time each visit, and she's always here. Maybe one of these years, I'll remember to ask. But she's consistently on top of things, is quick on the cup refills, and has handled my anti-seafood requests like a pro. Big thumbs up to her! The Wrap-Up: YES, eat here! As pricing goes, yes they may be a tad steeper, but it's worth it, trust me. Don't forget about that Red Menu as well, especially if you're in the market to be adventurous. This was my favorite sushi restaurant in Jacksonville. My husband and I have been here approx. ten time in the last two years and I just realized that I have not reviewed this place yet. Over the years we have ate in occasionally but normally order for pickup. This evening we ordered to go and the female on the phone told us it would be approx 20 minutes. We got to sumo sushi 30 minutes later and the order was not ready although the waitress was mumbling something so i did not understand that our order was not ready when I paid for it until 5 minutes passed and then I flagged down the waitress and asked how long it was going to be. She looked at the other female waitress who then yelled to the sushi chef and came back with ten more minutes no apology just ten more minutes. So we decided to have a Sapporo while we waited and had to flag the waitress down to put our drink order in. They recently redecorated the restaurant with a lot of red lights which was strangely soothing. However the music was not the greatest, reminded me of a 90s boy band. I will admit, I started this review planning to write a glowing review because it was my favorite sushi place in jax but as we sat waiting for our Togo order which they said on the phone would be ready in 15-20 minutes, I started to get irritated at the staff's complete disregard for people waiting for their orders. I counted five including ourselves who were waiting for Togo orders and there were only five tables occupied at the time. I watched the Togo bags pile up in the bar area while the staff avoided our eye contact and the staff did not feel the need to update or apologize for the wait. The waitress was not even considerate enough to ask if we would like another drink while we waited. I watched as our soup was ready and sitting out on the counter well before anything else as well as the salad, the soft shell crab roll, and black dragon roll although at the time I did not realize they were part of our order. Twenty minutes later and approx one hour from when we ordered, the last two rolls and sashimi platter were ready and they started putting all of our sushi in a bag. I let the waitress know that we had been waiting for an hour although they told us on the phone it would be 15-20 minutes and she responded that "it was not her fault." However, I would tend to disagree with her and say that she was partially at fault because I know she was the one on the phone that took our order and did not take the time to think and appropriately assess the time it would take to make my order based on the previous orders that had already been called in. I would understand this if she was new but she has worked there for awhile because I remember seeing her there on two previous occasions. The sushi is the best I have had in JAX which is not saying a lot because it is mediocre at best compared to sushi in NYC , San Fran, heck even San Antonio has better sushi restaurants. I have been to four different sushi restaurants since living in Jacksonville. The service and the proximity to my house is what kept me coming back but after the horrible service I just received I will be finding a new sushi location to frequent in Jax. After my comment on the wait both females started mumbling things to me which I did not understand but definitely understood the tone was that they did not care. Once we got home, the eel sauce had coagulated on the soft shell crab roll and the black dragon roll tasted horrible which may have been due to old eel or may be contributed to the 30 minutes I saw it sit on the counter while the rest of the order was prepared. The two rolls were thrown away, so wasteful, and I really wish that I had asked for my money back after I realized half of my order was sitting on the counter for 30 minutes. I definitely will not make this mistake again. If you want good service and fresh sushi, I would recommend trying a different sushi restaurant while you are in Jacksonville. The service here has really went downhill. If you decide to go here, I would recommend going during their slow period during the week. They do not seem to be equipped to handle a full house or even partially full house on a Saturday night. read more

The sweet potato roll others rave about is good but .... it is a little strange -- just cuz it's unexpected !! and you can only eat a couple pieces because it's so filling We had two other rolls - crazy and fuji mountain (I think) and we liked the crazy but the other one was our least favorite. This was the best sushi I've had in a long time! GREAT PLACE! Stumbling upon the restaurant on our way down to King and Park for a late dinner, my boyfriend and I sat at the bar, so happy they were open late. Super friendly service, nice cooks, great ambiance. They were flexible enough to sub brown rice with the white rice in all our rolls for a tiny upcharge, which was more than fine with us, since we are trying to avoid white rice with our diets. I think my honey found this place on Yelp... I am glad he did! When we walked in, there was a sticker on the door that said 'we are a Yelp favorite'! I giggled and thought... we'll see! The restaurant was pretty empty. Besides us, there was one other couple. Very clean place and the service was quick and very friendly. They have dividers hanging from the ceiling between tables. I wasn't sure how I felt about that, seemed almost distracting. After a few minutes, it grew on me and I loved the sense of privacy. Before you order, be sure to check out the infamous 'red' menu. I've heard others say that they had to ask for this little 'secret', but when we were here it was sitting on the corner of every table. This menu has all of the special rolls... and there are a lot, which means we are going to have to make many more visits! We ordered the clear soup... it's a must! Makes ya feel all warm and fuzzy :) We also ordered three rolls (from the red menu). The pink lady (or something like that), was soooo cute I almost didn't wanna eat it... almost! It was just as yummi as it was pretty. The spicy tuna wasn't really spicy at all, but it was still very good. and the third one... dang, the name escapes me at the moment. If your looking for a chill sushi restaurant this is the spot. They have many selections and its relatively cheaper than most sushi places. The atmosphere is really quite and the tables are really close together, so larger parties might have a problem. The waitresses are really friendly and the food comes quick. What I didn't really care for was the fact that the chefs put some sort of sauce under and ontop of the fish. My guess was so it didn't taste so fishy.. but then why have soy sauce on the tables? Best Sushi in Jax! Treat yourself to the red "special rolls" menu! You will not be disappointed! We have ordered nearly every roll on that menu and they have all been superb. The staff knows my regular customized roll order by memory and I have never had to complain about ANYTHING. They have always been very helpful and polite. We've been going to Sumo for almost 3 years now. As for the actual restaurant, this place has more of a "mom and pops" feel, but it's not too small. There is a sushi bar, booths, and tables. Don't come here expecting huge hibachi grills/tables. I don't miss them, but then again I come here just for their sushi. The presentation of their sushi is creative to say the least. You can really tell they love what they do. I've never ate from a boring looking plate. In fact, one roll is delivered to the table ON FIRE! Very cool and very yummy! read more
