Nigiri, left to right: Smoked salmon, eel, octopus, yellowtail, white tuna, and seared tuna (shrimp and squid below).

As a sushi afficionado who has eaten quite a bit of it in Japan, I have a very high bar. And as a foodie who often brags about Nashville's incredible culinary scene, it was imperative that I did my research when a fellow sushi lover came to town. So I scoured the Internet to find Nashville's ultimate Japanese destination. After running the numbers on 30-something sushi joints, it was clear that Sumo Sushi had the highest ratings in the city, sporting an impressive 4.79 across all platforms with 429 reviews! The masses have collectively spoken, but would these lofty ratings hold up for a sushi snob who's eaten the real thing overseas? YES!! YES!! YES!! Sumo is that good!! This is the freshest sushi I've eaten outside of Asia. And my five-star review just bumped them up to a rarely achieved 4.80 Internet rating and rightfully so! The glowing reviews are accurate, the quality of the food exceeds their competition, and the creativity of this Thai/Japanese fusion cuisine is incredible! The menu is clever, extensive, and very authentic without being pretentious, and the website is very slick. Replacing the lackluster Zushipoke in this cozy Melrose space anchoring the Eighth South condo, Owner/chef Ming Pichidtammarat is at home as a master chef. He personally took our order and highly recommended the white tuna. So I eagerly took him up on it. Sampling some of their best nigiri, the smoked salmon and seared tuna were impeccable, probably my two favorites and easily among the best things I've ever tasted in Nashville. But the white tuna nigiri is so good that it's nearly equal to the other two, certainly one of the best things on the menu! The eel (unagi) nigiri was sensational, usually my favorite of all nigiri. But the other three items were so good they almost made me forget my beloved unagi altogether! Now that's saying something! The yellowtail was so buttery and smooth that even in fifth place, it was better than almost any other restaurant's best sushi! I wasn't quite as fond of the octopus nigiri, nor the sweet shrimp nigiri, perhaps because the other choices were so elite! But that did nothing to stop me from raving about this meal for the next few hours and gladly bestowing five stars upon Sumo, something I'm stingy about doing. Even better, the price is completely reasonable. You could acquire 10 pieces of nigiri (smoked salmon, seared tuna, white tuna, eel, and yellowtail) for $34.75, large cuts of meat that will fill you up for a very worthy price without breaking the bank. Sumo Sushi has the highest ratings in town, and they are every bit deserved! Stop reading my review and go there right now!

Met with some friends for dinner and was not disappointed! We took part in their happy hour drink specials and free parking around the backside of the building. I had Gyoza for an appetizer and a Paradise Roll for dinner, which was delicious. We each got different things to try and everyone seemed to love what they ordered. I enjoyed the laid back openness of the restaurant and the friendly service. I will have to stop back by next time I'm on this side of town!

Upon entering the establishment was comfortably open and stylish. The artwork is appealing to the eye and a lot of thought went into designing the space. I ordered Thai tea and the tuna lovers roll. I was blown away by the presentation of the sushi roll when it arrived! Such thoughtful beauty in something as simple as a sushi roll. Despite dining in for sushi I chose to order Panang curry and chicken lomein to go because it will no doubt measure up to what I expect from amazing Thai food.

Pros: EXCELLENT SERVICE. Our server was attentive and consistently check on us and refilled our drinks. Appetizers were good! Cons: Both Ramen's lacked flavor. The egg was over cooked and there weren't any additional ingredients. Very plain. 2 imitation crabs pieces, 1 egg, and a piece of pork. We choose to ask for the "spicy tray" to add extra flavor. The sushi tray was also disappointing. The food was not cold. One roll was an imitation crab nigiri One roll was egg nigiri. For the price point I would have expected the nigiri's to be ALL fish. * the Salmon,Tuna , Octopus, Yellow Tail nigiri's were DELICIOUS . If you come here, opt for these pieces.

I decided I wanted to have sushi for dinner and let the traffic die down before I commute home. 5 stars just for free parking in the back of the building . The restaurant is so cute and bright. I was welcomed right away. The bathroom was clean and smelled amazing. Now to the food! The Chefs Sushi Platter was good. It wasn't the best sushi I've ever had in life, but it was decent. My soup was mostly broth, but flavorful broth lol. I'd skip that next time for sure. I look forward to visiting again and trying more sushi options. The service was excellent too!

Sumo sushi has a great ambiance. It is bright and colorful. The decoration is very welcoming and spacious. The place super clean and plenty of tables. I love the parking in the back and the price is really reasonable. The staff is nice and courteous as well.

I was genuinely shocked about how good this sushi was. Both rolls were absolutely delicious. The fish was fresh and the rolls were bigger than average for the price. I also appreciate that they deliver with the sauces on the side. I will definitely be ordering from here again!

One of favorite Nashville spots. Great sushi burritos. Good service and nice atmosphere never too crowded. Thai teas are super sweet I always ask for extra cream.

We just moved to the neighborhood and we're super excited to eat here and try it out. I hate to brag on myself but I love Thai food. I'd say I'm an expert but all my friends would say I just really like food. You say what you want, I'll say that I'll go here again. My husband got phô and I had chicken friend rice (because I'm an expert, remember). We went mid day during the weekday and it was empty but I could see how this place could be fun for a dinner date. The bathrooms were super clean and the staff had my drink refilled before I even noticed it was running low. I recommend

Excellent! The Sakura Roll (Spicy Crab) was excellent. We had several other rolls too and they were great as well. Everything was fresh.

There was no live music available at the time, but they did have a DJ which I thought was spinning the turntable rather well. It's my bad that I didn't also catch on that his is basically a Tequila Bar, rather than a more general craft cocktail establishment. Judging by the well stocked bar and the word of our waitress, other alcohol and their associated craft creations are available, but it's pretty much off menu and not well into our waitress' repertoire. And yes, Cinco de Mayo was just a few days away. One member of our party just wanted a soft drink, which was not possible that night as their CO2 was down. That did make me wonder whether the non-alcohol drinkers had much to chose from here. I suppose we could have then wandered over to the Redemption Bar at Chief's? Anyway, we're not Tequila Drinkers, and since other drink options appeared to be guesswork, we left towards more traditional mixed drinks (and live music) at a nearby Printers Alley bar. This was a rare night that I really wanted a craft cocktail in a smooth environment, and in the end it just wasn't the same.
