Fun and beautiful, yes. Front desk is awesome. Problem is the outdated room amenities in the lodge including no refrigerator in most rooms, no microwave, no bottled water, lacking smartphone audio hookups and charging outlets, etc. Rustic could describe it well. That's okay when you need a getaway. The service at dining was preoccupied with something or elsewhere, very delayed and certainly can be improved. Hard to give the place 4 stars without some updates and improvements with guest services. read more

Every fall we make our yearly visit to Methow Valley. It's our "Autumn-break" before the Holiday's. The Sun Mountain Lodge is where we detox, rejuvenate and take a break from the rat-race. Every room is perfect, even the one's in the lodge with a limited view. The rooms are peaceful, quiet with comfortable beds and terrific views. We've stayed in every guest room over the years and prefer the Gardner rooms and with the extend-a-stay package the room rates are a deal. The Mt. Robinson rooms have a sunken tub and that extra perk doesn't justify the price. The outdoor activities are what really makes it special. We sign up for numerous activities from horseback riding, to fly fishing, to sailing on the lake. Brett and Kevin at the activities desk take care of you, with info on where to hike, fish, ride your bike, and where to eat in Winthrop or Twisp. They don't treat you like a "newbie" when you try something new, they sincerely want to make you feel comfortable and relaxed. I can't say enough good things about them. As the restaurants go, don't plan on eating at the lodge every night or breakfast every day. Over multiple days the menu gets old and tired. Maybe that's the point, one should get out and enjoy what the Methow Valley has to offer then come back to the lodge and have a glass of wine. Sun Mountain Lodge is the only place to stay! read more

It's been nearly five months since my husband and I had dinner with a friend at the Sun Mountain bar restaurant. My friend, Lucy, was seriously injured that evening and, whether it was her fault or the fault of the lodge, doesn't matter. The lack of concern and indifference by Sun Mountain staff was absolutely astonishing. We were seated on the elevated area in the bar at a six person table. There were four of us. The table was (and still is) located close to the two steps, with Lucy's chair less than a foot from them. When she got up to leave she pushed the chair back slightly, took a step sideways and she and the chair fell to the floor below. Her injuries required medical attention and to this day she continues to be in pain and attends physical therapy regularly. It is questionable whether her shoulder and arm will ever fully recover. Yes, a staff member arrived on the scene but offered no help. She simply asked if Lucy would like to complete an accident report and told her to send any medical bills to the lodge. What an accident report does I have no clue. Lucy has heard nothing with regard to that report. In a followup call to the restaurant Lucy was told that Sun Mountain does not get involved with medical bills. Lucy has good insurance but that's not the point. It was the attitude and lack of caring. She never did talk with the manager. He referred to his minions because "he doesn't like to take these kinds of calls" according to the person she talked with. Lucy had, and still has, no interest in suing Sun Mountain, but she could have! What she wanted and asked for was that the area be made safer for future customers. She suggested that a four person table replace the six, or that a short attractive railing be installed as a safety measure. For both suggestions she received an "absolutely cannot do either of those things." I was there when this accident happened. Either of those solutions is entirely possible. For the life of me, I cannot imagine how a business of Sun Mountain's caliber could be so mundane and dispassionate about such a serious incident. If it were any other restaurant or business, anywhere, I'm betting they would be all over her to make things right. Oddly, if you don't like your dinner or maybe the service at Sun Mountain, you will get a response to your review with all kinds of offers. In one case, a free dinner and free night was offered to someone who complained about the food! Lucy has not received so much as a phone call to see how she is doing. What is wrong with these people? We have moved from Winthrop, but while living there we frequented the Sun Mountain restaurant and bar several times. Will we go back? Never. This incident screams not only of poor customer service but a huge lack of humanity. In my view, vindictiveness seems appropriate. read more

Here for a conference. There are no TVs, refrigerators or microwaves in the rooms. WiFi and cell service is poor, at best, which is fine if you are here to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery. If you're stuck in a conference all day, you might want to contact the outside world. With the place being 14 miles from the nearest town and with people having different food requirements, they might do well to add refrigerators. I get that they want people to eat at their $14 hummus plate restaurant and have a $12 dessert, not my style. And the place doesn't wake up until 9 am. Good luck getting a cup of coffee or hot water. They'd serve their customers well having a pot in the lobby like most hotels, especially if the restaurant doesn't open until 8:30. I would not stay here again on a pleasure trip. The rooms are clean, which is nice. The views are amazing, hiking and wildlife are plentiful. All the dead animals on the walls may not sit well with animal lovers. PETA might not like to hold their conference here. read more

We stayed at Sun Mountain several times before this recent time which was four nights and for a four star resort it was less than perfect. We felt that there was no personality with the resort. The staff was nice checking in but nothing special, not accomadating. What about a glass of wine to welcome the guest? We spent over $800 for 4 nights and have been left by ourselves with no amenities. There was one option for breakfast which as a celiac was not helpful. We ended up driving into town every day for breakfast and dinner. They are not customer focused which is something I would expect for a four star resort, with or without the pandemic. My recommendation is to look outside the box! Think about the needs of all guests. (Just Disappointed) read more

We've been visiting Sun Mountain Lodge for over 25 years and love it. However, we still have not learned our lesson with regard to the bar (now closed) and the dining room. The service is always always poor! I just don't know what it is, it's almost as if the wait staff doesn't want you there in the first place because they'd rather be out biking or hiking (us too not to worry), and the foodservice is ridiculously slow. We love everything else - Bret in the bike/ski shop; the ladies at the coffee shop, the lodge ... but please do something about the dining room and the bar. Great location, great views, great resort! Staff were friendly and courteous. Good to very good wine list. We had dinner and breakfast in the main dining room. Brekfast was about a 7 ( out of 10). Dinner was an 8 plus ( I had the duck, skin was crisp, meat was med rare). We also had a 2ild mushroom st4udke that was a solid 10. Our room was in the main lodge. It was very nice. So add to the "greats" above It would make a great place to recommend with confidence. read more

We recently stayed at Sun Mtn. Lodge with the Road Scholar group. I am GF. The Chef and staff we very accommodating with my dietary limitations. Once they knew I was GF they were on top of the issue. Nestled in between the towns of Winthrop and Twisp, Sun Mountain Lodge is a scenic, wintry wonderland 'round Christmas time. The lodge proper has everything you could hope for in a casual and rustic setting - cozy stone fireplaces, tall vaulted ceilings with thick wooden beams, a handsome Christmas tree, and taxidermy scattered throughout. There are quaint rooms for reading, games (foosball, pool, and ping pong), and lounging. There are even special wintertime events like cookie decorating, coffee and cocoa, sleigh rides, and photos with Santa. My group stayed in the Patterson Lake Cabins, which are a little over a mile away from the actual lodge. We thoroughly enjoyed our time spent in our cozy cabin, making meals and enjoying the view of the partially frozen lake against a backdrop of snow-topped fir trees. We enjoyed being able to step outside and start snow shoeing or skiing without having to go far. There is room service every day and a free laundry machine and dryer (!) in a building nearby (you must leave your own cabin to get to it). The ever attentive staff truly went above and beyond by spreading holiday cheer through wreaths placed on every door a couple days before Christmas, and by giving bags of sweets and treats on Christmas Day. One drawback to staying at the cabin, however, is that there is limited cell reception and no wifi access. My calls were limited to when I was able to walk outside and my emails were sent while at the lodge itself. We took cross country skiing lessons from the ski shop at the lodge proper. The instructors were extra patient and very helpful to us! I learned a lot from our one hour session. After our lesson we felt comfortable venturing out to some of the green runs like Chickadee, Beaver Pond, and Little Wolf. (Word of caution: Aqua Loop is green on the map, but believe me when I say it should be marked as blue! I fell on my bum enough times to verify this :P) Snow shoeing was a blast as well! We shoed around the Red Tail trail as well as the Lake View trail, which happens to connect the Patterson Lake Cabins to the actual lodge. I would recommend Red Tail for snow shoeing because it's less traveled, and a little more challenging (more of a workout) than Lake View, although Lake View does have panoramic views of the lake as you descend from the lodge. Red Tail does have some pretty nice panoramas along the way, too. Make sure you grab a map from the front desk at Sun Mountain Lodge so you have an idea of where all the snow shoe trails and cross country ski trails are. This place is now full of fond memories for me, so I would likely recommend it to friends and family in the future. Perhaps I'll be back in the summer! read more

I visited over memorial weekend as a mini vaca from all my hectic wedding planning, looking forward to my visit to the spa for months. We got the living social deal for the rooms. First off.. If I was to review this place without the spa in mind I would give it a 4 star. But unfortunately for them and myself.. I went to the "spa". I myself am an esthetician who works in seattle. I take great pride in what I do and from the moment my clients walk through the door to the second they leave they are PAMPERED. with complimentary iced lemon water, chocolate, trail mix of all sorts, tea, sauna, ect. Anyways.. When I walked into the spa, it took me some wondering around to find that the receptionist is in the first door. Very nice lady. That room could use some work.. it felt like an office. When clients experience the first room of your spa you want to WOW them. It should be a lovely taste of what is to come. I was then directed to sit in the hall and fill out my paperwork. Now i may be spoiled.. or more like i spoil my clients, but I wasn't offered water or anything while I waited. Not a big deal but it would have been nice. The massage was really good. He listened to what I needed work on and that I had a back condition. (I did the mt robinson package or something, one hour facial and one hour massage for $170) Then i was moved into the next room for my facial. Which is what i was REALLY looking forward to because it is oh so rare I am ever on the other side of that. I dont want the person who serviced me to be judged or in trouble at work.. because I truly believe none of what happened was her fault, but those who put her there. On the intake form it asks for your occupation so I wrote esthetician. Sometimes when your new to the industry that can make you nervous, I understand. The girl came out and introduced herself and said "oh your an esthetician too!" and I said "yes, im really excited to be here!" She replied that she was nervous and I laughed it off and told her no worries I usually fall asleep anyways, I really needed to de-stress so I was hoping to fall away into relaxation. I layed down in the bed and she can back. (heating pads under the sheets are always a good idea, i was chilly!) She started conversation with me by telling me she was planning on attending a well respected esthetics school in december and I assumed it was for their medical course or laser, so I said "oh! awesome! What are you going for?" And she said " Well i am not technically an esto, but im a cosmetologist! I can do facials! Just not extractions!" OH.. MY.. God.. is this a joke. I totally respect cosmos and I would die without them but THEY DO NOT BELONG IN THE ESTHETICS ROOM, THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE DOING! She looked at my skin and i couldnt even take it seriously because she had no idea what she was talking about. She said "oh your dry." yes.. i am.. thats my skin type. No face mapping, nothing. Which is okay.. she hasnt gone to school for this. They should have never put her in the position to do facials in the first place. She is not licensed to exact anything which is what I needed the most, I was breaking out from stress. And she cant exfoliate past what I basically get washing my face with a cloth. Which leads to the next thing... and again.. not her fault.. she hasnt been trained. Whatever ridiculous person thought.. this is a 4 diamond retreat lets not put a legitimately educated and qualified esto in this position, but someone with absolutely no training, practice or education past the ONE CHAPTER they go over in cosmo school.. surprise, iv done that too.. you cant fool me and tell me you know what your doing. Anyways, her touch was light. too light, like she thought i was a poisonous snake or a fragile vase. That is something we are forced to get over fast in school. Do not pet their face. Cleanse it, manipulate the skin, penetrate the product, act confident. Then the exfoliation.. literally.. felt like an old toothbrush with bend bristles being moved over my face so lightly it tickled. The facial massage to say the least.. no. Every move is done for a reason. Lymph drainage, moving the muscles, working elasticity and collagen.. as us ladies get older, we WANT that. Ugh.... then of course that water she used on my face she got from the faucet in the bathroom.. and no hot towels or steam were used. Which is a really simple yet amazing part of getting a facial. I was so let down and expected so much more from such a highly rated retreat.. Save your money and do not visit the spa.. Then when I called to complain 20 mins later because i got to my room, my face was dry, i had peeling nose on my face still, as well a white heads and blackheads.. worth $85? NO!! The supervisor who happened to be the man who gave me my massage wasnt very happy with my complain rudely saying how he has never had an issue with her before or the service. If you want one of only four rooms with a T.V. then expect ZERO view (room overlooked roof) and no fireplace. I traveled with teenage boys so a T.V. was a must but I didn't realize I would be giving up the amenities that made me want to come. Winthrop is a neat little town and I kept wishing that I had booked a place there.. The food in the pub was overpriced and had a very limited menu. Upon arriving to the room, I called the front desk to ask for the refrigerator that i previously requested days earlier and they were rude. I'm writing 2 reviews for SML as there was an issue involving invasion of personal privacy that occured when I stayed @ SML This review is about everything besides that issue. In my review below, I consider aesthetics, architecture, amenities, staff & location. Location: SML gets 5 stars for exceptional, unbeatable, spectacular views...the resort is located amidst dramatic beauty. Anyone fortunate enough to see the views from SML, on a clear, blue, sunny day, will never forget the pristine landscape. It's better than picture postcard quality because the expansiveness is unimagineable. Staff: A few SML staff, deserve 5 stars; inc. Bob; he runs excellent, enjoyable horse sleigh rides. He's so good w/ kids (& horses) that it's well worth the cost...in fact he's so good at what he does, I'd have paid more for a 1 hr RT w/ 4 kids - just so they'd have that memorable experience. He's amiable, down-to-earth and patient. Other notable 5 star staff members inc. Don & Ray; both in the ski shop. SML couldn't find more knowlegeable, friendly, kind, considerate, and professional employees. Ray's a great, exceptionally kind, patient x-ski instructor. Barb works in the Bar & Grille and provides exceptional, superior 5 star assistance w/ a great sense of humor. She's responsive, competant & helpful. No other staff members stood out as exceptional, although the hotel manager seemed sincere, kind, courteous, respectful, good natured, & not pretentious/snobby. Amenities: SML beds are more heavenly than the Westin's... I even inquired about where to purchase one, they're SOOO comfortable. The temp. controls in the room are great, I liked opening my window to let in fresh, clean mountain air. The room was clean, but a bit small for the cost, but the bathroom was large & had two big, comfy bathrobes. I loved the lighted, magnified mirror in there, but the low watt hair dryer was useless - glad I brought my own to use instead. 5 star views are uncomparable from ea. room; who can complain about scenic vistas? Overall, SML rooms are nice, but lack amenities I expect from that caliber of lodging. Eg., there isn't a small refrig. in the room so guests (often avid outdoors people) can stash fruit, yogurt,cheese, wine/etc. for day pack/lunch/snacks. Rooms have absurd coffee makers - difficult to figure out. Why we can't they have coffee makers that normal people can figure out how to use for tea/coffee/cocoa!? A BIG flaw, from my perspective, is the lack of a business center/desk. To print a document, there's no privacy; a hotel clerk has to help print it. There isn't even 1 computer, printer/ fax for guests to use w/o getting a staff person who can read personal documents being printed. I don't like the lack of personal privacy. Guests should at least be able to use a dedicated computer and printer in privacy. Food: Quantity was fine, 5* , but quality was inconsistent. We ordered Cajun pasta - so bland & poorly spiced that all 3 who ordered it said it's unacceptable; 2 of us returned our meals in exchange for a superbly, well-seasoned 5* vegetarian lasagne. Chef Paul Prudhomme's magic seasoning blends would improve the weak, tasteless SML 'cajun' spices. Our waiter repeatedly made mistakes w/ drink orders, e.g. margaritas ordered w/o ice were brought WITH ice, etc. I didn't like their vegetarian pizza, but their Chai icecream w/ pumpkin bread pudding was excellent. Coffee was just OK, don't they use local Blue Star organic coffee? Breakfasts were good, but I couldn't believe the Spanish omelette, -it "comes w/ cheese. + warm salsa", but arrived w/o salsa! instead, there was ketchup. It's unacceptable that our waitress didn't say "we're out of salsa" when I ordered it. Luckily, I had a jar of salsa in my car and had to get it. The next day, I ordered the same thing, thinking certainly they'd have salsa by then, but AGAIN they didn't tell me we're out of it as I ordered; AGAIN they only had kethcup! That's inexcuseable, they couldn't make more salsa in 24 hours? They couldn't say they were out of it? Aesthetics & Architecture - The exterior architecture, art gallery & game room are great, as are the fireplaces, lighting & rustic art work...but please, lose the dead animal heads mounted on all the walls. Dead animals are not decor. At SML, more than 50 dreadful, pathetic symbols of human cruelty are plastered everywhere, including an entire bison. It's disgusting. Walk the SML Hall of Shame to see heads mounted right & left. I like SML's rustic decor, but dead animals all over are a repulsive, pathetic disgrace. A bottle of Zinfandel won't ease anxiety and sadness I feel beneath glassy-eyed stares of dead Dahl sheep, deer and elk. Sell them & donate the $$ to the Methow Conservancy, make something good out of something hideous and repugnant. SML has a 5* location, views, skiing, fireplaces, architecture, & rustic decor, but inconsistent service, food quality, & lack of amenities are 2*. read more

I had never been to Sun Mountain Lodge until my stay on Jan. 14-16, 2020. The place is impressive. It's physically beautiful, and customer service exceeded my high expectations. I want to single out two staff in particular. Susan at the bar served me dinner and drinks both nights. She is excellent. She is unfailingly friendly and kind to every single customer. She made me feel at home when I was away from home. Michelle at the front desk did the sort of thing I wouldn't expect a commoner such as myself to experience. She arranged the game room for me, knowing I was coming down later that night to shoot pool. That sort of personalized service really sets the standard for everyone. We booked this hotel six months in advance with another friend and her fiancé , and we were very excited to stay here. Within minutes of arriving ( ACTUALLY , even before arriving - it's a frickin 9.5 mile drive from town , with poorly labelled signage....) we were annoyed. We were on motorcycles and pulled up to the lobby to check in. Both my husband and I tripped on the uneven ground in the driveway ?! The lobby is nice , I do Ike the "lodge" decor and multitude of dead animal heads on the wall.....( seriously ok for me, but would probably freak some people out ?!) The girl who checked my husband and I in was friendly enough, but the older white haired gentleman who checked our friends in spoke so quietly , we could not hear a word he said without straining !? We got to our rooms in the Gardener building ( rooms 120/121) and were pretty shocked at how small they were! I had read a review on yelp that said something about no tv in the room. But I guess I hoped they were kidding - they were NOT; no tv !? For $350 a night I should be allowed to waste my time and money sitting in the room watching tv if I so choose !! There is one restaurant , and one bar, so my husband and I made the LONG haul back to town to buy some beer ( what else were we gonna do all night ??) our friends said to meet them back at the pool for drinks, so we were excited about the idea of having "drinks at the pool"...... Well she meant, bring some of that gas station beer, they didn't serve any drinks at any pool that's for sure !! So , are you getting the hint that this is NOT a "resort"..... But rather, an ( extremely) overpriced motel out in the boonies? We had made dinner reservations ( as recommended for their "busy" restaurant) for 7:30 ,but we were having a nice time chatting with our friends so we called and tried to change it to 8:00, which had the guy hemming and hawing and saying " I guess so....we'll fit you in SOMEwhere..." But when we got there it was empty !!?? Our waiter was friendly and knowledgable, unfortunately the food taste and quality did not live up to his elaborate descriptions. "Pine nut DUST" on the salad? Oh you are funny........" Best steak in the universe" well sir, you are a funny guy....not quite. Our shrimp appetizer had TWO pieces of shrimp, our friends "mushroom strudel" was merely a tiny egg roll cut in half with some bizarre sauce..... My Caesar salad was pitiful -a head of artisan romain cut in half with about a tablespoon of dressing and two lonely anchovies on a Parmesan "chip" . My filet mignon was way over cooked - I asked for it " black and blue" which I guess their 4 diamond chef doesn't know how to do.....my friend ordered the quinoa cakes which were too spicy. So basically none of us enjoyed our food. The chocolate dessert plate was good. That's it. We were in town for the Blues Festival and inquired about a taxi or shuttle , no luck there....... There is no coffee in the lobby. Just a pot back by the restaurant where all the wait staff was standing around gossiping instead of greeting us with a hi or a smile. They do not sell espresso drinks except in the gift shop, which does not open until 8:30 a.m , and they don't make drinks larger than 12 ounces because their ( snobbish) roasters don't want to ruin the integrity of the coffee.....basically this hotel wants to control everything you do, and they took my money and gave me very little in return . I will never return ,and I spoke to several other guests who felt the same way and highly disapproved of their two night minimum stay in this BORING , out of the way place! ..... When looking at my pictures I remember a few other problems.....they do not prove decent coffee in the rooms. A simple plastic basket with 2-3 mini creamers and splendas and 2 stir sticks....like I said - like a motel !? Spend a little money and at least provide a Keurig machine !? Your guests are willing to pay $350+ per night, they have better taste than this!! Their handyman/groundskeeper was very rude and grouchy . A Mexican gentleman who brought a replacement iron to my friends room, and later kicked us out of the pool table room at 5 minutes to 10 pm, like we were rowdy kids !? We are adults who paid good money to be at your hotel that pro des NOTHING to do in the evenings.....is it really so bad to let us finish our game of pool ?? My husband and I attended the Diamonds and Pearls event this past weekend and it was so perfect! The food was absolutely delicious and beautifully served with every detail thought of. Nicki was an amazing host and incredibly knowledgeable about the wines we were served. Chef Tyler came out to speak with us one on one and answered any questions we had. My first trip to Winthrop and the Sun Mountain Lodge. Was very excited to experience the beauty of this area and the resort. Our room had a back porch into a nature area which had deer in it every morning. There were often grouse running around out front. Our room was very nice with a huge jetted tub that opened into the room. It also had a fireplace. Music played when we arrived through a wall unit (although I was suprised to find it only got two stations). I hadn't realized in advance that the room would not have a tv, but I suppose this makes for a more romantic vacation. We spent a lot of the time sitting on our back porch, we were lucky enough to witness the most amazing thunder and lightening during our visit, which surrounded us on all sides and provided hours of entertainment. There are two pool areas one being closer to the unit we stayed in. Hot tub was quite relaxing and had a similar great view to our room. The price for beer in the minibar was also decent. Seems everyone staying here had come to bike the many trails in the area, so if you don't have your own they do have rentals on site. We chose to hike in the nearby mountains instead. We had breakfast each morning in the dining room and checked out the bar for drinks one night. Dining room staff were very helpful and accomodating, which I always appreciate. As you can imagine there is also a great view from the dining area and the bar has an outdoor patio section. I had a gift certificate for this visit so I can't speak to the price, but I imagine it is high. Definetely worth a visit, but be on the lookout for deer at all times, apparenlty their population is super high in this area, we saw so many heading up the road to the resort. read more

Went to Wolf Creek Bar and Grill for lunch since we are camping near the lodge. I highly recommend the prime rib dip (with a side of horseradish) , my friend said "Amazing Reuben" and both ladies said the "Halibut was awesome" (fish and chips). The Martini's are very strong. Stayed here post-Christmas after reading/hearing rave reviews about this place. First, let me tell you it is quite a drive to get there (over 4 hours from Issaquah). You get to Winthrop after almost 4 hours and then it's another 20-25 minutes to get up to Sun Mountain Lodge. The place is quite nice. They offer numerous activities and we partook in the sleigh ride one afternoon. The people were courteous. We stayed in a 2-queen bedroom overlooking the mountains. Not a huge room but not too small either, OK for 2 adults and 2 little kids. Wished they had a microwave in-room. Also, we disliked the fact that the housekeeping service didn't know/remember how many sets of towels and toiletries to leave. We paid for 4 people and the staff were very well aware of it when we made our reservation and checked in. The towels left were always just for 3 people (toiletries for 2), however, and one time there were only 2 sets and we had to call them for more. We even left a note on our second day that there were 4 of us in the room and would need 4 sets of towels. We didn't realize it was necessary everyday! On our last day/night there, they only left 1 set of toiletries minus the lotion. Either they really have poor housekeeping service or there's a major miscommunication between the front desk/reservation department and housekeeping. If/When we get charged for 4 people the 4 of us should get the same service. Another thing we disliked about this place is their food. The free coffee they offer at the front desk in the morning is not good. My husband saw they use good beans so either they don't know how to make coffee properly or they don't have good coffee machine. We ended up getting coffee at the gift shop every time (coffee in-room is not good either). I know Sun Mountain Lodge claims/boasts on their website they have AAA 4 Diamond Award for 25 years now... crap!!! Don't make the same mistake we did and believe it. Nothing special at all, not even the presentation of the food. The menu is pretty small also and doesn't change (specials not offered at every mealtime), so if you're there more than a day or two you'll definitely get tired of it so easily especially the overall quality/taste is mediocre at best. One breakfast time, I asked for oatmeal and got very disappointed when it came. It was served sloppily in a very shallow bowl and with very little serving, the oatmeal just half of bowl (not up to the lower or inner rim of the bowl--see photo). The milk they gave on the side was more than the oatmeal itself so I honestly thought they must be kidding me or made a mistake, and so I asked the server if they could please fill it up a little more so it's at least a decent serving. She said no, it's the portion they serve and left. Now this is the same server we had at least 3 times we dined there and I can't mention her name here as I wasn't able to take note of it and describing her may not be a good idea. Even the berry sauce (extra $1.50) that came with our kids' pancakes were very little that it was only enough for 1 pancake, honestly! Poor service all but one of the 6 times we dined at the restaurant. The servers we had would somehow just disappear during our meal until they probably guessed it was time for dessert or for us to leave. When we had our 3rd breakfast there, we were seated promptly but waited 15 minutes to order and we actually had to ask someone if they could please get our server (no water or coffee service while we waited). That's when the same woman showed up without any apology. Since then, we drove down to the town of Winthrop to eat. We had to drive 20-25 minutes back and forth but it was much better than eating at Sun Mountain Lodge. The bar is a little better than the restaurant. Would we go back? Probably not. We really wanted to like this place but for something that's tucked away and doesn't offer kitchenette in-room, they need to improve their restaurant big time. Food is a big part of a good vacation in our opinion. If you decide to go, plan on eating elsewhere. read more

Called to have champagne and strawberries delivered to my moms room for her 50th birthday and they unfortunately weren't there when she got there, which was promised. Which then ruined the surprise when I asked her about them as she didn't get them yet. When I called they said oh we will put them in her room now, well when you pay 50$ for that you kind of expect what you were promised. I called to talk to manager and no one called me back. Very disappointed. Was not contacted by management as requested to resolve this issue! I called several times and no one called me back. read more

Ohhhh man. I think I am in love. This is a LODGE therefore it's not the room service, get waited on hand and foot type of place, although the staff is amazing. I feel like I caught up on 10 years of sleep in 3 days. I would highly recommend the cabin of you like quiet, I blacked out the windows and slept for-ev-er. My husband and I were so sad to leave. My husband & I have been camping/visiting Winthrop Washington for over 20 years. This year we splurged & stayed 3 nights @ sun mt lodge. We stayed with our family of 4 in the lodge not cabins. Keep in mind it is a Lodge, no tvs in rooms. It offered 1 very comfortable king bed & with in same space 2 full size "couches" that converted to kids beds. A spacious bath w/ tub. I wish it offered a kitchenette. It did have coffee pot & concierge did offer a refrigerator be delivered to our room but honestly I didn't want to bother. It was our daughters 7th birthday so we ate @ the lodge. Reservations are required. We sat early @ 5:15 & had attentive service, epic mountain views and offered impressive wine list. I started with the beet soup-delicious! And enjoyed savory trout for my main. My husband enjoyed huge & tasty steak. No wonder the lodge continues to be recognized for superb restaurant! The pool was beautiful on the bluff w/ large hot tub. My family had a wonderful stay & enjoyed many Mt bike trails just outside the lodge. I look forward to returning in winter & enjoying horse drawn carriage ride. read more

ON May 12 2011 had dinner in the cafe/bar. Wife had 'the best Reuben I've ever had' (in over 70 years), and I had a terrific Cobb salad. Service was good, views great, lodge well worth a wander through. Didn't stay, too pricey for us. Worth the 9+mile drive from Winthrop. read more

What a wonderful place! From the moment we arrived, the staff was courteous and helpful. The Lodge is a great place to rest and unwind. Sit and read in front of the blazing fire in the Lodge, or perhaps in the library. The one and only television on the property (which no one was watching) is located in a separate gathering room in the Main Lodge. Enjoy a game of ping pong, billiards, foosball, or cards in the large game room. Food? Fabulous. The award-winning restaurant offers delicious, expertly prepared meals throughout the day. The guest quarters, though a little small, were exceptionally clean and well-appointed. The bed was very comfortable. The view from our room was spectacular. The grounds around the lodge are nicely maintained. We very much enjoyed the walking trails that are just steps from our room and the Lodge. The only negative part about our visit to Sun Mountain Lodge is that it wasn't long enough. Next time (and there will be a next time), we will definitely stay longer. read more

I'd live here if they'd let me. The room was amazing, and the staff is super friendly and helpful. A little snafu with horseback riding and the Cowboy Dinner was more than overcome by the hiking, the views, the fantastic bathroom, the super comfy bed, and great local shops. Winthrop is fantastic! All of the chairs are awful. My only complaint. They're either too high or too low, and invariably hard and uncomfortable. Seriously, though, other than that? Come on. This place rocks. read more

We stayed there 2 nights in a Mt. Robinson room. The room was very nice with a great view. The staff was generally friendly and professional. We went on a horse drawn sleigh ride which was fun. Highly recommended. The reason for the relatively poor rating is the food. We were really looking forward to the food. Unfortunately, we were sadly disappointed, especially the dinner in the formal dining room. I agree with another reviewer that the food is overworked and there is too much going on, starting with the amuse bouche which consisted of some type of sausage with banana sauce. The scallop ($36) that I ordered lacked flavor and was soggy, although the mushroom strudel appetizer ($15) was pretty good. However, for the prices they were charging, I expect better quality food. On our 2nd night we went into Twisp where we had a much better dinner for less money. If we ever return, we will definitely skip eating at the lodge. read more

This place is great, nice and cozy and it has great views all around makes you feel like you are on the top of the world. Two swimming pools with hot tubs, game rooms, bar and a nice restaurant. You can also do their wine tasting they have a huge selection. Plenty of trails to hike, bike or they also have horseback riding and two tennis courts. The lodge on the top of the mountain is great or try the riverfront cabins which are more secluded and private with fishing and kayaking. This place is worth the drive which was 3.5 hours for us. read more

Our stay at Sun Mountain Lodge was phenomenal. We encountered some logistical issues with our reservations and the staff was extremely generous and accommodating. The view from our room at the Mt. Robinson section of the lodge was unforgettable. We ate at both the Dining Room and the Grill, which both offered delicious, well priced options. The Lodge had a cohesive atmosphere of rustic luxury, down to every detail. We enjoyed the nightly concert on the lawn, and truly felt taken care of and relaxed on our stay. We have just returned from our fourth visit to Sun Mountain Lodge staying in the Gardner Building. Everything about this visit was wonderful! The rooms are beautiful, we love the gas fireplace & the comfy beds. It seemed like the breakfasts in the dining room & the quick late bites in the Bistro were especially delicious - kudos to the chefs! The snowshoe trails were beautiful with new-fallen snow and others in our group enjoyed the groomed x-country ski trails! We will definitely be.back next year! read more

Cowboy Dinner experience a must. Rode up on horses with my two grandsons for a great dinner but a better ride to an from the cook out. The sunset ride back makes the mountain view colors something to behold. Debra and her crew were top notch in their work ethic and the care for the horses. I was lucky enough to stay here for a conference. First off the view is beautiful, 360 degrees of mountains a wilderness. The rooms are very comfortable and nicely decorated, even having a bathrobe. However, the bed was not first class, and I expected better--I actually looked forward to sleeping on mine at home. The staff was very friendly and attentive. They did a great job providing breakfast and lunches, which were fresh and delicious served good coffee which is a plus. At night we sat near a large fireplace in the lobby, sipping wine and listening the a friend play the guitar. The food was pricey!! The group I was with each ordered something different. I received the Reuben, and have defiantly had better. Another friend ordered a Mac-n-Cheese dish that lacked the cheese and was dry. The gnash was ordered which was said to be tasty and came in a really cool bowl! read more

Beautiful scenery, dangerous dining conditions at Sun Mountain Lodge. My experience at Sun Mountain Lodge had an unfortunate ending and has not been properly corrected so I am left with leaving a poor review. I stayed at the lodge with a friend in June, 2018. The scenery was beautiful, the room was pleasant enough, and the lodge itself was nicely kept. However, our trip turned miserable when I fell down the steps in the bar restaurant due to the poor configuration of the table and chairs. (I am a fit 75-year young woman who has no physical limitations and does not drink.) We were seated in the elevated area at a table of six+ even though there were only four of us. Our table was located very close to the steps. In that area there was not room to place this large table any further away from the steps. As I pulled out my chair to stand up and step back from the table, I fell down the steps with the chair landing on top of me injuring my arm and shoulder. I did complete an accident report. I left the next day for home as I was in so much pain. I have had several doctor calls and physical therapy. I called Sun Mountain Lodge to talk to Brain the General Manager. He was not in so I left a message. To this day he has not called me. I did call again and talked to someone in the office. She said she would have Brain call me. No call. I explained to her that I am not interested in a lawsuit. My goal is to have Sun Mountain Lodge reconfigure the table and chairs or put up a railing so no one else would fall and injure themselves. The person in the office agreed with me that area was unsafe but the General Manager and Bar Manager will not do anything to make this a safer place to dine. To date, nothing has been done to make this a safer place. I feel there has been a total indifference to my medical condition, the safety of patrons dining in the elevated area of the bar restaurant and the fact I had a poor ending to my stay at the lodge. I have not made any claims for medial cost, out of pocket expenses or my time spent going to physical therapy for my injured arm and shoulder which may never be 100% again. I have never asked, and at no time has the Lodge ever offered me any kind of compensation for this experience. I feel it is necessary to write this review to warn others of the conditions and in the event someone else suffers an injury as I did due to the dangerous condition in that area. I feel the management of Sun Mountain Lodge has extremely poor customer service and lack of caring for their customers. read more
