I've been going to Sun Nong Dan for years. Although I've been to all of their locations, I almost always frequent this one due to proximity. As far as Korean soups go, this place is great. I enjoy the side dishes, and I actually enjoy the fact that I get just a few but they're all good. The radish is my favorite! This spot is generally no frills, efficient service, and not too crazy of a wait. Service is generally quick and attentive, but they're straight to the point and aren't looking to idly chat. If you're planning for dinner, best advice is to get there before 6 PM. Otherwise, don't be surprised if you end up eating after 7 because they don't take reservations, only a waiting list. Came for dinner with my friends and I. It took a while for someone to acknowledge us and take our order but it was a Friday night so it was pretty busy. This is my first time trying sun bong dan despite all the hype around it I did not enjoy it . I've had other galbi jjims at other Korean restaurants in ktown and OC and they were so much better. I will say that their rice cakes were really good and chewy but why does it cost so much just to add cheese on top. In addition the galbi jjim was not tender at all. I think it wasn't ready to be served and needed to be braised longer since it was a jaw work out trying to chew through the tendon. For the premium price I was expecting high quality beef but it also seems that they use less premium beef ribs. Instead of sun nong Dan I would check out other Korean restaurants that definitely have better galbi Jjim. I do appreciate that they're open 24/7. read more

Mul mandu (water aka steamed dumplings - think Xiao long bao without the soup because they were all busted) were tasty. Just wanted something to snack on and this hit the spot to start our meal. The banchan was decent, a handful of items - cabbage kimchi, radish, chives, and squid (?) We had to order the galbijjim which there's not much more to say that all other reviews haven't already. Tender pieces of beef short rib meat (and bones) with rice cakes, potatoes, carrots, in a delicious stew. Amazing over rice. I docked a star since I've had other galbijjim that was way more fall off the bone - these ones required hands and gnawing to get every bit of meat. Iykyk. Still great flavor, perfect spice. Had it with the purple rice (they referred to it as brown). They also serve it with dipping sauce for the meat (onion with jalapeno) that's usually found at kbbq places - great sauce. Sun Nong Dan is iconic and amazing! They are known for their galbi-jjim which is well worth the price! We got the large deluxe version or Koh version that comes with the oxtail + the cheese add on. Next time, I would order just the regular version because the galbi meat is my favorite but it was fun to have the variety of meats in the dish! The best part are the potatoes soaking up the sauce! If you go around 8-9 am as I usually do, you shouldn't have to wait too long for a table. It definitely gets busy in the evening for dinner time, so that's something to consider. The staff is very nice, the restaurant itself is clean, and there is plenty of seating. Every time I'm here I order the #1 yang ji sulung tang. Such a comforting, clean broth. I don't add too much of the salt/pepper seasoning, but I usually pile on the green onion. The meat they use is nice and tender. And I also really enjoy the refreshing banchan they offer, especially the kimchi and the scallions. Side note: you know the soup is made well and is collagen-rich when your refrigerated leftovers are nice and solid. My friend and I came here on New Year's Eve around 11:30 AM - because this restaurant is open 24/7, and they're open on the holidays we were expecting to wait a long time before being seated. However, this restaurant and their servers are very efficient and were seated within 10 minutes. The soup at the restaurant is definitely the highlight of the menu. I got the number 12 (Tta Roh Guk Bao - brisket and cabbage soup) & my friend ordered the number 13 (yuk gae jang - spicy beef and leek). Both were amazing and come with their delicious banchans. I had the galbi tang, and honestly, it's the best galbi tang I've had so far. I really hope they never change the recipe. My babies loved it too. As for the service, there honestly isn't much to complain about. The utensils and water are already at the table, which I actually don't mind. The staff doesn't really come around to check on you or offer more banchan, so you do have to flag them down if you need something. But they are very nice when you do. They don't seem rude or unhappy working there -- just extremely busy. The restroom seemed clean as well. My only downside is that there wasn't a changing table in either the men's or women's restroom, which can be difficult if you have babies. Overall, I would still absolutely give this place 5 stars. My sister tried several other dishes and loved everything she ordered too. One funny thing -- she always asks for no cheese on the galbi jjim because she thinks Korean restaurants should stop trying to cater everything to "American" taste buds . Then I never saw anyone again, after waiting for quite a bit I just yelled over to the register and said can I order? Then the waiter came over, confirmed what I wanted by circling the item on the menu. He left and brought back side dishes and rice and shortly after my orders. Then he gone again. I ordered the teuk galbi tang and had a genuinely great experience. The broth was very comforting, the short ribs were tender, and everything hit the table fast.
