Our server was wonderful! She constantly checked in on our table while still taking great care of her entire section. She kept our water glasses full, refilled the teapot with hot water, provided thoughtful plate changes, brought extra napkins, and was incredibly friendly throughout the entire meal. This is a well-known place for spicy Sichuan food. The interior is nicely done, and the ordering system is very convenient. I love spicy food, so I usually try places that people say are good. Overall, the food was good, but it was very oily, so I think some people may like it and some may not. The complimentary tea and cabbage were really nice. One thing that bothered me was water from the A/C dripping onto our table lol. We told the staff about it, but their reaction was... not what I expected. As this place is known for its authentic Sichuan cuisine, when ordering dishes, make sure to check with the server on the level of spiciness of each dish to avoid any surprises. Ma-Ma Hot Fish (Black fish) - 麻麻藤椒鱼. A traditional sichuan dish with fish filets (black fish) cooked in green sichuan peppercorn oil (with plenty of fresh and dried Sichuan peppercorn). If you want a true and authentic taste of Sichuan dish, this is a must-have! This is one of the non-spicy dishes, with plenty of fish filets and a taste of citrus zing with a slight numbing flavoring. Resturant located in a well hidden plaza right behind a driving range. It only has one outlet street into/out of the plaza. Parking wise, the plaza parking can be very busy during dinner time and weekends. You can always drive around to the back of the plaza as there is a parking structure with plenty of spaces. I've been to this restaurant twice, and the food quality has been consistently excellent. I had another wonderful dining experience here tonight! The presentation of the sliced pork belly with cucumber, served hanging on a wooden rack, was absolutely stunning and unique. It paired perfectly with the spicy dipping sauce underneath. The shredded potato was also fantastic, perfectly crisp, light, and full of flavor. The last time I had Sichuan Boiled Fish was delicious. After I graduated from USC, I spent a year managing the night shift at a 24-hr Thrifty Drugs store on Canon Drive in Beverly Hills. In addition to frequent celeb sightings (Rodney Dangerfeld, Cher and Sir Elton to name a few) the otherwise bleh job's other perk was the plethora of restaurants nearby. I fixated on a small, family-run Szechuan place that served, still, the finest kung pao chicken I'd ever tasted- Peanuts, peppers and dark Chinese sauces expertly wok'd to yield a distinctive chocolate, malty taste on the back of each crunchy bite. I was smitten at bite #1 and it was my "pay day Friday" lunch spot for the entire year I labored there! Over the ensuing thirty-six plus years, I have searched high + low, far + wide for Chinese restaurants who make their Kung Pao or Gung Bao chicken the authentic Szechuan style. 95% of the time my taste buds and I are left crestfallen when we discover that they'd caved, prepared their KPC in a bastardized, American style (sweeter, lighter, far less savory and zero cacao bean imprint on my palate). Finally my search happily coincided w/ my smartphone's AI, who counseled me that Mountain House in Rowland Heights may well sit at the peak of area Szechuan specialists. First, arriving at Mountain House is an experience unto itself. Like an Empress, she seats at the back of a bustling circular strip mall and parking is as hard to find a sub-$5/g fuel! Upon entry, you're instantly transported by what HASTA be one of the most evocatively atmospheric restaurants I've ever witnessed! Calming beech wood, ornately scrolled calligraphy and the soothing noise of water gently coursing thru interior fountains make for unbeatable ambiance! The food?! Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeiit. THIS was the best Kung Pao I've savored since those halcyon days when Yours Truly was a fresh college grad and before he launched his corporate career! I am immensely relieved to have pinpointed a local Szechuan-forward restaurant that doesn't shirk from the Sichuan peppercorns and the scalding hot temperatures required to produce that instantly recognizable faux-malty chocolate note you get in well made KPC. I've was wanting to try this restaurant ever since one of my coworkers recommended it to me. The restaurant is beautiful with wooden pagodas and a fountain at the entrance. I ordered some of their most popular dishes including the swing pork belly, beef rib wraps, and chili prawns. Easy to submit order using a tablet and liked the pictures. The chili prawns were spicier than expected, but was flavorful. Standouts were the other two dishes, as they were both refreshing while having high quality and tender meat. I would definitely order both of those again. They unfortunately were out of their black sesame mountain shave ice dessert, so we went to miro mochi in the same center instead. Also got their snow peas for the veggie, which went well with the other dishes. Service was okay, they didn't check up on us much and we had to get our waitresses attention to ask for ice waters and for the check. Another small complaint was that the restaurant was quite warm as they shared that their AC unit was old. As always this place has a great ambiance for dates or family meals because of the interior design and decor. Now, they provide tablets making it easier to order. We got their mapo tofu (you need to order rice separately), braised beef and tripe (cold chili oil dish), and beef rice wraps. They sold out on braised pork belly but that is also one of my favorites. Mapo tofu is spicy but addicting, and the two beef dishes were very tasty. They will package your leftovers for you on request. 3/5 vegan and vegetarian options available: I had Mountain House saved in Yelp since it opened and finally had the opportunity to visit on a Saturday night recently. It's beautiful inside, the food is all right, and the service was polite. I just feel that based on the value of the food and the options available, I wouldn't revisit at Mountain House again. My friends who are not vegetarian felt similarly. If you're going to try to be inclusive of vegetarian diets, market yourself as inclusive, then I'd hope the entrees would also reflect that same energy. The food and service: I'm fully aware that vegans and vegetarians are not the target demographic for this restaurant. That said, there are some options for those who are plant based, and thankfully, the staff were well versed in the options, so I wasn't jumping through hoops to try and figure out what was edible for me. I understand that this isn't the norm, so it was very much appreciated! What we were able to order was the snow peas with lotus, Ma Po Tofu (with modifications, removing meat), and Fried tofu (sauce on the side because it contains a meat element). My friends also ordered some other meat forward dishes (not pictured here). The staff were super sweet in communicating all of these modifications to the kitchen well. That said, none of us were blown away by the food. This spot feels very much an Instagram popular restaurant as opposed to some truly delicious Chinese food. My friends definitely have had better Chinese food at less pricy spots, and I've also experienced better vegetarian options at other Chinese restaurants nearby, so I likely wouldn't come back unless I felt like they tried to make real changes to the menu to include vegans and vegetarians more. However, if you're trying to impress some guests who don't have Chinese food often, this isn't a bad place to take them. The staff are communicative, the restaurant is beautifully decorated, and the kitchen can make modifications to dishes. Everything else: Parking can be a bit of a struggle at Pearl Plaza during peak hours, but if you keep driving down you might be able to still find a spot. Credit card is accepted. The lights are soft and the background music is soft traditional Chinese. I love the iPad menu, it's well designed and easy to use. The cuisine is spicy Szechuan style- many dishes have popcorn, chili, and are heavily seasoned. For a party of two we ordered the spicy chicken, garlic beans, and twice cooked pork. Don't go to this restaurant. Mountain House used to be one of our favorite Chinese restaurants for spicy food, but after two extremely uncomfortable incidents involving servers pressuring us to leave an 18% tip, we will not be returning. The first incident happened about three months ago during lunch. We had eaten here around ten times before without experiencing anything like this. That day, our server directly told us, "18% is the minimum requirement here. Please give 18%." My partner responded that we did not believe a restaurant could require a tip unless it was clearly disclosed as a mandatory service charge. We ultimately left 15%. I researched it afterward and learned that a genuine tip is supposed to be voluntary. I considered filing a consumer complaint but decided it was not important enough at the time. Eventually, I forgot about the incident and moved on. The second incident happened today, again during lunch. From the beginning, our server's behavior felt excessively and performatively attentive. She changed our used plates at least three times until we finally asked her to stop because it was unnecessary. She repeatedly moved dishes closer to us, even though we could reach them ourselves. She constantly came to the table to remove individual used tissues, rearrange things, and ask whether we wanted to replace a regular plate with a smaller one. We clearly told her that we did not need another plate and were perfectly comfortable eating from the original serving dish. Despite that, she continued hovering around our table and finding minor reasons to interrupt us while we were eating. Good service should make customers feel comfortable. This did the opposite. Her attention was so excessive that it felt forced, transactional, and insincere--as though every unnecessary interaction was meant to remind us how "attentive" she was and create pressure to leave the exact tip she expected. Instead of allowing us to enjoy our meal and conversation, she repeatedly interrupted us to perform tasks we had not requested and did not need. At one point, I genuinely wanted to tell her, "Please stop trying so hard. I am going to decide the tip myself." Her behavior no longer felt like thoughtful service; it felt like a performance designed to justify demanding 18%. We ordered six dishes for two people and left a 17% tip. When the server saw it, she immediately asked us to change it to 18%, claiming that 18% was the minimum shown on the payment screen. A suggested percentage on a screen is not automatically a mandatory charge. Customers determine how much voluntary gratuity they want to leave--not the server. What made the experience even worse was what happened immediately afterward. Once she realized that we had left 17% instead of 18%, all of her excessive attentiveness disappeared. We then heard her complaining to her coworkers in Chinese, saying, "They didn't even give the required tip." We understood exactly what she said. That reaction confirmed why her earlier behavior had felt so fake. Before payment, she could not stop coming to our table, changing plates, moving dishes, removing tissues, and offering things we did not need. After payment, she did not even come back to ask whether we needed takeout boxes, despite the fact that two people had ordered six dishes and obviously had a significant amount of food remaining. We actually wanted to take the leftovers home, but by that point I felt so uncomfortable and disgusted that I no longer wanted to interact with her. We gave up and left without asking for boxes. The issue is not the difference between 17% and 18%. The issue is being pressured, confronted, and criticized over a voluntary tip--especially after already leaving a reasonable gratuity. If 18% is truly mandatory, it should be clearly disclosed before customers order and listed on the bill as a service charge. It should not be demanded by the server after the meal. Speaking Chinese to us does not make it acceptable to pressure us or complain about us within earshot. The entire experience felt fake, disrespectful, and deeply uncomfortable. We used to genuinely enjoy this restaurant, but after this happened twice, we will not return. read more

We ordered the string beans, steamed crab with sticky rice, and chili oil dumplings. The string beans are delicious but the dumplings can be passed on. It tasted more like a wonton than a dumpling. The Dumplings in Chili Oil were a great starter, and both the Chinese Long Beans with Eggplant and Water Spinach were fresh and delicious. The Incredible Fried Rice with Beef definitely lived up to its name! We finished with the Sweet Drunken Jelly and Honey Pear Chrysanthemum Tea, which were the perfect ending to a great meal. The interior is gorgeous and truly emulates that of a traditional Chinese village with the dimly lit lanterns and wooden architecture. We were seated quickly since we had reservations using Yelp and the host walked us to our table in the back. The seats weren't the most comfortable but the table was spacious for just two people. The host came back with a delicious pickled veggie appetizer and some tea. It was my first time here, so I was excited to try a lot of items since I don't have authentic Szechuan cuisine very often. My most anticipated item was the most popular, the swing pork belly, which came with an addictingly good garlic sauce. My favorite dish, however, was the green spicy whole fish. The fish was tender and delicate but balanced well with the sauce. I also really enjoyed the grilled beef ribs, since it's served like Peking duck, where you build your own wrap. It didn't come with bao buns, like pictured on the menu, but the meat was tender and the whole dish was flavorful nonetheless. The ma-la boiled beef is another solid choice for an entree, which I would choose over the la-zi chicken. We finished off the meal with the black sesame shaved ice with snowy cream, and I would say it satisfied my sweet tooth, but I wish the bowl wasn't as shallow because I wanted more. I dont know what sauce is on the bottom but i think its chilli oil and alot of garlic. I also liked the beef with the wraps but they need more wraps. I did see other with 8 baos on yelp but im not sure why we got wraps instead. Fish with soysauce. This one is the 2nd option on the menu with chinese letters and no pictures. We had to ask the server which one it was since the images of that specific one looked amazing. The fish was a little fatty so the meat on it was soo juicy. Dont forget to eat the cheek meat. My friends love the beef tongue but i prefer the chicken over that. Only bad thing was the chicken had too many broken bone pieces so it was a little hard to eat. It had a hint of mala to it. The prawns came with alot of garlic and they give you gloves so you can eat them. The pig intestines needs to be crispier, otherwise it just tastes gamey. hot and sour soup was bland, it needed vinegar. the mala noodles were not spicy at all and didnt really have meat. Mountain House was a pleasant surprise for me! I've been wanting to try this place for a while and it did not disappoint! From the outside to the inside, the restaurant does a great job capturing its guests. For those curious, the staff speak English and Mandarin. The ambience is peaceful with dim yellow lighting and water flowing through the center of the restaurant. Ordering was a breeze as they provide a self serving tablet to order food with jasmine tea as the standard (free). We came for Szechuan and boy was it yummy! The soup was delicious and had a ton of flavor with perfectly cooked fish. We also got the bullfrog- chicken dish which was pleasantly surprising. I forgot to take a photo, but the fried chicken was also phenomenon. The spice was perfect for me (someone who loves spicy) but they also offer the option to order mild. The only thing I would mention would be that service could be a bit slow. Our initial dishes took about 20minutes and we even had to remind the waitress of a dish that was missing.
