TLDR: If you enjoy hotpot but you're disappointed that many locations don't offer enough options and you're not looking for AYCE, this is the place. Be careful when making your pot, because the price can reach AYCE levels, so learn the system when you do come here. Thoughts: I definitely helped myself like I was in an AYCE hotpot spot, so that's probably not the smartest move. 1kg worth of stuff (pre miso broth) filled with beef slices, mushrooms, fresh tofu skin, shrimp ball, beef ball, and a good amount of egg noodles. This set me back $40, which is more than if I had just gone to an AYCE hotpot place. I will say, though, that I have leftovers, which is good for 1 meal, so one could argue that it's $20 per meal. I enjoyed the food. I feel that this place really nailed the above-average hotpot taste, while giving its customers ultimate control over what they want added to their pots. Came here on a weekend afternoon. Mala tang style Chinese restaurant where you get to choose your own ingredients, soup base, and you get charged by the weight of your chosen ingredients. A good variety of fresh ingredients to choose from; vegetables, meats, noodles, etc. I went with the bone broth as the soup base. Once you selected your ingredients into your pot, it is weighed at the cashier. Then your soup will be delivered and on you shortly. There is always a sauce bar where you can make your own dipping sauce. At this place, you pay after your eat (some other mala tang places require you to pay right after the weigh-in). Service was good as we were able to get our soup fairly quickly. If you like light soup flavoring, the bone broth is the way to go. The restaurant is located in the busy Mandarin Plaza, so parking can be a pain during the dinner time and weekends. The only issue with this place as it does not list its price anywhere in the restaurant. Most mala tang places list its price via cost/lb. When we asked for the cost, we were told it was ~$3.68 per 100g... yeah, you go figure that out ... ballpark, it is about $15-16/lb. I anticipated this place to be great as it was recommended to me and that there was a long line when I came. I was really disappointed by the service. It was our first time here. Guy at the front gave us our pots and never explained anything. We waited for him because we thought he was gonna do/say something more and I finally asked him moments later and he just tilted his head to the food section in the back without saying anything. We stood around at the fried snacks section because we were not sure what to do if we want fried snacks. We had to personally seek out another staff to help explain. He said it'll have to be a separate bowl if we wanted a separate fried snacks for dipping into the sauces. Then at the end, my boyfriend went to make his own ice cream cone because it was placed at the self serve station where the self serve sauces, utensils, water cups, etc are also located. We later found out from the table next to us, and not even the staff, that the ice creams were not self served; must ask staffs. Again, we didn't know. No explanation from anyone. So overall, service was very poor. Another thing was- the sauce station was so dirty (see picture) and multiple things were empty for a long period of time. The other side of the sauce station, I don't have a picture of, but it was also very dirty with soy sauce and other sauces spilling everywhere. I was seated right at the sauce station and the whole time (like 2 hours?) I saw no one came to clean up around there. And for the food, my soup base was watered down to the point that it was not enjoyable. I got the signature mala. I do like the fact that there were so many options to choose from. I think this place is pretty good and I like the concept. You start with getting a bowl and tongs. You can pick out all your hot pot ingredients such as meat and veggies. At the end, you pick your broth or dry broth and they cook it for you. I really recommend the dry tomato one. When I go to a malatang spot, I definitely would get a dry pot over a soup pot. Everything was pretty good. However, it does take a while for the pot to be ready. Also, I wish the food came out hot. It was basically lukewarm when it came out. I ordered the signature mala broth, assumably most comparable to other chain restaurants, and it was bland and had no spice despite it's advertised as "intense" and "numbing." I tried enhancing the flavor with the ingredients from the sauce bar, but it wasn't much different. Service was attentive and helpful with providing utensils and consistent check ups. 2.5/5 vegan/vegetarian options available, but decent food is overshadowed by poor service/understaffing: Listen, you can't have "Hot Pot" in the name of your restaurant if your pot comes out lukewarm at best. Where things went wrong (it was that bad y'all): We had already made our bowls and there were at least four parties who were waiting to have our food weighed so a good 15 people were just standing there for 10-15 minutes, because there was one staff member at the register helping out a customer who was having a difficult time (I think they might have been struggling to pay with cash). It took me asking one of the three other staff members at the drink making station to open up another register for them to do anything about it. While I appreciated that this staff member listened, it's evident that this restaurant needs to rethink their staffing strategy. Once we finally got seated, it took another 15 minutes for my food to come out (lukewarm), and the rest of my party was just waiting for their food. Since this "hot pot" comes precooked, I had to eat it before it got even colder, leaving the rest of my party to wait another 15 minutes it was before I finally flagged staff to check up on their orders. He responded, "I'll try but we are really backed up." And then finally, 20 minutes later their food finally came out. I don't know why there was such a long wait between our bowls, when we all got up to the register together. All our bowls must have been already made but just sitting in the kitchen because all three bowls were lukewarm, and mine came with the vegetables and noodles already soggy. In total, we spent a longer time waiting than actually dining there. They also offer a complimentary milk tea soft serve ice cream upon payment, but the machine must have broken down because we saw the staff member fighting with the ice cream machine. When we finally got the bill and our complimentary ice creams, they were a runny consistency and partially melted. The food: It's one of those pay by weight type malatang spots where they hand you a bowl and tongs and you choose your ingredients, weigh the food (we were told $16.75 per pound), and pick your broth. They have 10 broth options and 2 can be made vegan (mushroom, tomato). Your vegan protein items are tofu in four different ways, and deep fried egg if you're vegetarian. They offer a larger variety of ingredients than most places, and a sauce bar that's similar to other spots. I landed on a mushroom broth and got mild spice, and I truly did enjoy the flavors. However, a member of my party said the two types of fish they got were incredibly salty. Note, as with the malatang spots, there is high likelihood of cross contamination because everyone uses tongs to pick up ingredients. They really should consider putting all the vegan items before the meat options, to reduce the risk of cross contamination. Everything else: Big Way "Hot" Pot is located in one of the busiest plazas in Rowland Heights so parking spots during popular dining hours maybe rather difficult to find. After we sat down, we were given the bowls and tongs, and were instructed on how the whole process works. Basically, you go to the foods area and add whatever meats, seafoods, veggies, noodles you like to your bowls. Then select your soup base. They weigh it. Then you head back to your table and wait for them to cook it and brought to you. You don't pay at the time of weigh-in, you pay at the end. I must say, there were so many items to choose, you will definitely find something you like. We had two bowls, one with the Signature Mala Broth, and the second one was with the Tom Yum (w/Coconut) Broth. They also have a Sauces station where you can spice up your bowl. Big Way has been our go-to for malatang for a while now, and the topping selection is the main reason we keep coming back -- there is genuinely so much to choose from. We've worked through almost every broth at this point: Signature Mala, Classic Mala, Collagen Bone, Spicy Kimchi, Tom Yum, Mushroom, Sukiyaki, and Chicken, plus the Spicy Sichuan, Spicy Tomato, and Creamy Alfredo dry pots. They all taste good, but they do start to blend together after a while. My guess is most of them are built on the same base, so the differences end up more subtle than the menu suggests. My one consistent complaint is texture. More often than not my noodles and proteins come out overcooked -- soft and waterlogged in a way that takes some of the joy out of the meal. Pulling things a minute or two earlier would make a real difference. Staff are attentive and helpful, no complaints on service. One thing I did notice though: I haven't seen anyone wash their hands or change gloves after wiping down a table before handing us fresh pots and tongs. Easy fix, but it stuck with me. The sauce bar covers all the standards you'd want. It just needs more frequent attention -- once it gets busy, it looks pretty rough. The wins: free ice cream after your meal is a nice touch, and I like that they rotate the flavors so there's usually something new to try. The drink menu is big too. Really disappointed with my experience at Big Way Hot Pot tonight. I placed my order at 10:03 PM, during the advertised Happy Hour, which clearly stated that free drinks were included. From there, you can fill your pot with some of the best variety and highest quality ingredients I've seen at a hot pot place! From lamb, abalone, several types of noodles, to crab, fish maw, and Chinese donuts, there were so many choices! They also have a wonderful selection of broths. I ordered the tom yum (with coconut) broth, my fiancé the collagen bone broth, and our kiddo the miso broth. I forget the exact price, but they weigh your ingredients and you pay per 100 grams. You order any drinks you'd like; they have an extensive drinks menu with some alcoholic selections. We ordered a strawberry matcha fresh milk tea and a brown sugar milk tea (both with boba). Both were great and we would recommend them for order! The cashier gives you a number and you can sit anywhere. There is a sauce bar that is clean and amply supplied, so you can concoct your hotpot sauce while you wait for your hot pot to be cooked and brought to your table. I go pretty simple with mine with just minced garlic, green onion, Thai chili, and sesame paste. My fiancé initially had two sauce bowls, one with garlic with thai chili and oyster sauce. Another with green onions and I believe sugar. We sat around for a while before my bowl came out. My fiancé's bowl didn't come out for another 15 minutes after mine and they didn't even include a spoon. We tried to get the attention of numerous wait staff but they simply walked passed us at least 6 times. I ended up going to the weigh in counter to ask for one. A different girl just gave me an odd look, and motioned for me to return to my table and went to the kitchen. I stood around not sure if I they were going to bring it to us or not... they didn't, I just noticed a random guy carrying to handfuls of golden spoons and put it in a bin next to the sauce counter. The spoons weren't exactly the right ones for malatang, but at least they were spoons. Let's get down to the food. How do I say this, but I'm not sure what their target clientele is, but it's too bland to be targeting actual malatang usuals. My tom yum flavor was all from the shrimp, beef rolls, and clam items I chose with a squirt of coconut milk on top. No tom yum flavor was noticed. I just ended up dipping every bites into my sauce. My dish was also served very plain looking. My fiancé's bowl was served with an appetizing presentation, but that was the only upside... she's a big Malatang fan, and after noticing the flavor, she ended up pouring all her sauces into the bowl to spruce it up a little... it wasn't enough, she went back to the sauce counter to get 3 more small dishes of stuff before she found it acceptable. I was pretty shocked. Sad to say, but if your broths are that bland, I'm not sure who the target audience is... Now let me get to the service, besides what I've mentioned about the girl weighing our bowls, it was pretty much be ignored. The host had us standing around with other guest in the front lobby for 15 minutes before being acknowledged. Forgetting a spoon isn't that bad, ignoring the customer trying to get your attention, getting attitude at the counter, and not even being told the spoons were brought out is another thing. After we ate, we hoped the wait staff would notice that we were sitting around trying to get their attention to get help with the black tea soft serve (there is a sign to get assistance for staff with the machine) and our checks. I ended up having to raise my hand like I was on grade school, until someone finally noticed me. He got us our ice cream cones and we saw him talk to another wait staff to handle our checks. Once that guy took care of the check and we were finishing up our ice cream, the original guy came back to handle the check again. Overall, it wasn't a good experience. The restaurant seems severely understaffed, and the service has gone downhill. I recently visited Big Way Hot Pot for the first time, and overall, it was an okay experience. When we walked in, the host greeted us, handed us two bowls and tongs along with a sticky note showing our table number, and explained the self-serve concept. You're free to grab as much or as little as you'd like, with a huge selection of ingredients to choose from. There was a great variety of beef, chicken, seafood, fish balls, vegetables, mushrooms, tofu, noodles, and more. Since every ingredient is priced the same by weight, we definitely loaded up on the meat! I had the Signature Mala broth with mild spice, while my friend chose the Classic Mala broth with medium spice. My bowl weighed 0.470 kg (about 1.04 pounds) and came out to $19.03 after tax. Both bowls together were around $37, which felt like a reasonable price for the amount of food we got. We also visited during happy hour, so our two iced jasmine green teas were included, which was a nice perk. At the end of the meal, we were given complimentary chocolate cones filled with boba milk tea-flavored ice cream, which was a nice surprise. The food was fresh, and I liked being able to customize my bowl with exactly what I wanted. The biggest downside was the cleanliness of the dining room. We were seated next to a table piled high with dirty dishes that had started to give off an unpleasant odor. Although the restaurant wasn't busy, most of the tables remained dirty throughout the entire hour we were there. I understand that staffing shortages can happen, but keeping the dining area clean would have made for a much better experience. I also think it would be helpful if first-time guests were told the price per pound before filling their bowls. I had already seen on Yelp that it was $18 per pound, but someone new to the restaurant might not know that. I also found it a bit odd that our bowls were weighed before we sat down, yet we didn't pay until after the meal. It wasn't an issue, but I wasn't sure why the system worked that way. Overall, the food was decent, the ingredient selection was impressive, and the complimentary drinks and dessert were nice touches. However, the cleanliness of the dining area and the lack of explanation for first-time guests took away from the experience. After ordering the broth, they take the bowl to the back and will bring it back out to you after they cook and add the broth to it. We waited about 15-20 mins on a full house night. Make your dipping sauce during the wait. They do not play music here but the atmosphere was fairly loud with everyone talking. Boba/drinks are extra. Big Way is located in a busy plaza but we were able to find parking easily. The restaurant is clean and spacious. I love the broth which I always get the collagen beef broth. It taste great with all my ingredient picks. I love the selection and love my pot to the very end. It's everything I love. I love the unlimited sauce bar! They have everything I want to make the best sauce to dip. I was able to add a bowl of rice and it just made it more delicious combo. The drinks are great and the service is awesome! They gave us our tongs and bowls and the rest is self serve, pay by weight. You can even try their dry mix which is tempting for next time! They had a variety of meat selections: beef, lamb, pork along with seafood, meatballs, greens, and different type of noodles. They were refilling them constantly so they were fresh. I love that you can choose every single thing to your liking! There's also a self serve sauce bar (although lacking on the refills), it was a great selection of garlic, bbq sauce, sesame oil, cilantro, green onions, chilis, and even MSG!
