This place markets itself as Chinese "self-serve hot pot", also known as Mala Tang. The food served here IS NOT that. The "Signature Mala Broth", which is supposed to be the classic Mala tang broth served in real Chinese restaurants, tastes absolutely nothing like it's supposed to. Mala means numbing (Ma) spicy (La). The numbing is caused by the inclusion of Sichuan Peppercorn, and the spicy is a result of chilli peppers. Unfortunately this soup is neither numbing nor spicy, and it's also missing many of the signature other traditional flavors that are supposed to make up the broth, such as star anise. Ultimately, it tastes like little more than tomato broth with chilli flakes thrown in. On the subject of spice, these types of Chinese restaurants traditionally offer four spice levels: mild, medium, spicy, and extremely spicy, which Big Way refers to as "Big Way Spicy", which is what I ordered. This level of spicy is supposed to be so uncomfortable that you can't eat more than a bite every few minutes. Again, this is not that. It's so mild you couldn't convince me it was even meant to be spicy. I've eaten here three times now, once at grand opening, and twice since, so I've given multiple opportunities to improve. If you think Panda Express when you think Chinese food, maybe you'll like this place. If you expect real Chinese flavors there are many better local options. Food: one star. It was our first time there although we've seen this place open for a while now. Today we gave this palace a shot, an it was such wonderful meal. I definitely like their system = We self serve to fill all the pot with protein, veggies and noodles ourselves, then let the cashiers weigh for the price ($36/kg, roughly $18/lb). Then we mix our own sauce at the sauce station. And then we wait for the waiter to bring the noodle soup that we had given to the cashier. We pay at the end of the meal when we get our free ice cream. I like how easy it is to get the ingredients we want, and get what we put into the pot without questions like other traditional broth shabu, such as "what kind of mushroom is it?" "How thick is my skied beef belly?" But maybe I am a visual person and this helps with my appetite :) Tip: I like that their bathroom had a baby changing station. But be careful because it's very easy to go overboard like I did haha. I got the tom yum soup base and it was delicious! There is a sauce bar where you can customize your dipping sauce. Was driving around looking for a place to eat for dinner. Lucky, we found Big Way Hot Pot. Parking here is a little tough. Luckily, we found a spot close to the restaurant. Restaurant is nice and clean. Plenty of tables. After putting our name on the wait list, we were able to get a table within 15 minutes. After we sat down, we were given the bowls and tongs, and were instructed on how the whole process works. Basically, you go to the foods area and add whatever meats, seafoods, veggies, noodles you like to your bowls. Then select your soup base. They weigh it. Then you head back to your table and wait for them to cook it and brought to you. You don't pay at the time of weigh-in, you pay at the end. I must say, there were so many items to choose, you will definitely find something you like. We had two bowls, one with the Signature Mala Broth, and the second one was with the Tom Yum (w/Coconut) Broth. They also have a Sauces station where you can spice up your bowl. I like the Signature Mala Broth. The Tom Yum Broth was a little salty. Overall, we enjoyed it here. At the end they gave us Chocolate Ice-Cream Cones to finish our meals. Yea it's hard to go elsewhere for malatang. At almost $17 a pound, this place has the best quality meat (even pork is good here), shrimp, and even offer albalone. The broth is definitely one of the highlights. Despite it being priced higher than other local malatang, I still come back here. This place goes thru ingredients rather quickly, so there's always someone slicing up fresh/frozen meat slices. I say thin lean beef is excellent for that beefy flavor (like brisket/rare steak in pho) and the fattier pieces are great for the dipping sauce. The lamb slices are rather thick (I'd prefer thinner like the beef slices) but still flavorful. The pork is tender and tasty, good like Boiling Point. The head-on shrimp is fresh and not pumped with sodium; you can tell by the texture when taking a bite because it's not artificially bouncy. I really like that they include albalone for the price because other malatang places don't dare to add it. Please try it if you're a seafood fan, or get it with the Tom Yum soup. I also like the crab pieces; they taste fresh and add a nice umami flavor to your soup. I do like the original broth, even at a higher spice level, it has that savory bone broth taste without being too salty or bland (like YinTang). The collagen bone broth might actually be my favorite, really rich-tasting without being too heavy in mouth feel. It's a well-balanced broth that goes well in any weather. YGF Malatang comes pretty close to their broth (their's is like #1 & #2 broth combined), but the drinks are better here and with more variety (10 soups/style to choose from versus 4) They actually check on our tables even though it's almost a self-service restaurant. I think this place is very reasonably priced. The ice cream treats at the end of the meal was a cherry on top... SOOO good. Service was satisfactory too.
